I seen a thread on here which was "whats your top ten for hair growth" and I liked it and thought it was a good idea. So since I'm still a new member and just starting to learn everything I figured I'd find out from everyone what was their top 10 things for healthy hair.

This can include anything from vitamin supplements to sulphate-free shampoo or no shampoo to never wearing your hair down!

What's your top 10 things that you must do for your hair to be healthy? What works for you?

And also, whats your guilty secret.
My guilty secret is gently combing my hair with a wide tooth comb when wet! I know I shouldn't but I can't help myself.

for me:

1) using natural cosmetic, no cones
2) don´t wash too often, I do it 2-3 times a week
3) sometimes conditioner only (after sports or so, just for refresh)
4) using oil, jojoba for wet hair, coconut for dry hair
5) no blow dryer

I thinks that´s all, my top five

Eating the right amount and type of fats, calcium, iron and proteins (nuts and seeds are great!)
covering loose french braided hair with a silk scarf for sleep.
Indian herb washes and WO (no cones or sulphates) + henna.
No chemicals and heat.
Oiling
Not brushing and combing sparingly with wooden comb.
Being stress free (stress is very bad for the skin and hair)
Washing only twice a week.
Not using very warm water to wash hair...warm water makes hair shed like crazy!
Clarifying and ACV rinse- the water here is high in calcium and builds up on hair.

Ok, here are mine:
1. No chemical dye - henna/cassia only
2. CO washing, very rarely shampoo clarifying
3. Occasional light oiling
4. Kinder hairbrushes - wood quill, Denman BBB/nylon
5. Wood comb
6. More gentle treatment - no ripping stuff through my hair just cos I'm in a hurry
7. Vitamins and more vitamins
8. Low to no heat blow drying, eventually to be eliminated when my hair's longer

The one good thing about having chopped all my hair off last year is that at this point, all the hair I now have has been treated with all the above. I'm hoping to have a really great head of long, lovely hair in a couple years! :)

These are the things that work for me...
1) cone-free (for my hair anyways)
2) clarifying shampoo (neutrogena) once a week or when crunchy
3) kiss my face 'mistreated' shampoo and conditioner (really works for me)
4) no/reduced heat styling
5) wearing hair up as much as possible
6) olive oil on the ends when dry
7) S & D
8) SMT
9) wide tooth wooden comb
10) no more dye!

I hardly do anything to keep my hair healthy as its already strong as steel, but there are stuff i do to make it look nicer:

1) no cone (hair feels lighter now :) )
2) wet-setting! :D
3)having hair contained the night after washing (prevents the deadly poof)
4)actually, having hair contained for as long as i can (hair always feels smoother right out of a bun/braid)
4) light oilings (only when velcro-ey)

hmm, that's it :/

1. CO washes 98% of the time, typically twice a week.
2. Oiling with camellia, emu or argan oil depending upon my hair's mood
3. Brushing with tangle teezer or combing with my boxwood comb only
4. HONEY! My hair loves the stuff. I get mine at the dollar store and just make sure its honey without additives.
5. Air drying only
6. Wearing hair up at work or for workouts.
7. miconazole scalp massages after a wash
8. 10,000 mcg of Biotin every other day, with 5000 mcg on the intervening days
9. self trims and S&D instead of salon visits
10. Biweekly deep conditioning treatments with cream of coconut
11. (because I'm a nonconformist) Wearing a swim cap when swimming. Mine is the old fashioned kind with rubber flowers all over it. CUTE!

My guilty secret? I always comb my hair out when its wet, but I start detangling from the bottom and use either my tangle teezer or my boxwood comb and be extremely gentle about it. My hair isn't complaining about it so I intend to continue. Its MUCH harder to detangle my hair after its dried and the tangles are attached to each other rather than slippery.

1) oiling (avocado oil or Dr Hauschka Neem oil are my faves)
2) no or minimal heat
3) only wide-toothed wooden comb and BBB. No other brushes or combs
3) do not shampoo too frequently, and only the roots/scalp
4) S&D
5) vitamin supplements

That's all really.

1. Not washing too often- every 4-5 days or so
2. Pre oiling with coconut oil left on length overnight before wash day
3. Shampoo scalp only
4. Moisturizing conditioner on length only leaving it to set for a good 5-10 minutes before rinsing it out
5. On day 3-5, my ends can get a little dry, so I use NightBlooming Triple Moon oil
6. Wearing it up all day- not too tight, not too loose- just enough to be secure
7. Comb only on dry hair- slowly and gently with wooden wide tooth comb for detangling, then a horn comb if I need it
8. No pony tail holders with metal/ not ponying hair too tight on ends. I always get allot of breakage at the ends when I tie off a braid, so I tie it off a bit higher up
9. Sometimes, you just gotta microtrim those ends
10. Don't fuss with it too much. When I wear it down, I am always picking on the ends, so I "Set it and forget it"
11. Silk pillowcase for sleeping
12. wearing it in some protective style at night- braid or bun

Sorry:) Didn't realize I had so many commandments LOL

here are some things that work for me

1. I never blow dry anymore, air drying works for me since my hair dries completely straight
2.I wash my ends only once a week
3. find good hair products! I recently switched to "It's a 10" shampoo and leave in conditioners and love them
4. satin pillow cases
5. leave coconut oil in overnight every couple weeks
6.prevent any harmful styles (curling, tight ponytails) I threw all my curling irons away from my shorter hair days
7.I try to trim any split ends I find
8. no harmful coloring
9.when going to bed i try to keep my hair in braids or a bun on top of my head so I don't roll or lay on my hair
10. I keep my hair out of extreme weather, whether it be extreme freezing temps or the sun for long periods of time

In no particular order:

1) no heat - don't use my blow dryers, hot curlers, curling irons, etc. any more

2) don't use regular towels on my hair any more (too heavy) - only microfiber towels

3) regular shampoo & condishioner with no 'cones (although every once in a while, I use 'poo and condish with 'cones once or twice, and my hair seems happiest with the rare change)

4) smooth-edged/toothed seamless buffalo horn and plastic combs (wide-tooth for wet/smaller for dry)

5) boar bristle brush to distribute oil when hair gets oily before next wash day and/or after oiling

6) usually I gently comb my wet hair with a very wide-toothed comb, but sometimes I just plop and let it curly-wurly up on me (my hair seems to enjoy the change)

7) sleep on a satin pillowcase

8 ) although I admit to prefer sleeping with my hair loose, I try to force myself to wear it up loosely or in braids, and/or in a silky pocket bonnet

9) restrain myself from washing more than once a week (most of the time) and only rarely a second time if necessary for a particular event

10) keep changing how I put my hair up/back/contained to avoid breakage in one place

Ok, let me think about this...

1. Wash my scalp (I use SLS free and some with Sodium Laureth Sulfate)
2. Condition my hair (now using cones)
3. Treatments (I frequently use a mask as my conditioner which I leave on for an hour when I have time)
4. Leave in for extra moisture
5. Blot with a microfibre towel and no rubbing
6. Let it air dry, preferably inside
7. Oils for shine, smell and feel. I use coconut, jojoba and a hair elixir that I bought from Perfect Potion.
8. Limited heat styling (every so often is ok for me) and use of a heat protectant if I do
9. Use snagless hair ties, smooth hair sticks
10. Updos for safe ends and smooth crown

I think that's about it from me.

Hmm... good question! I wonder if I can come up with 10...

1. Stretching washes

2. Henna! (instead of chem. dyes) -- This is probably the single biggest thing for me; other than chem. dyes, I've always taken pretty good care of my hair by LHC standards. Heh, I was generally too lazy/ uninterested to do anything really bad to it, plus I figured out pretty early how bad my hair tangles and ways to keep it from doing that.

3. Air-drying (always done this... I don't have the patience for a blowdryer!)
4. Seamless comb only for detangling
5. Hair sticks/ forks
6. Coconut oil (or at any rate, my hair seems to be enjoying it right now...)
7. Braids for sleeping
8. Trim splits (S&D) only
9. Never, ever rub hair for any reason!
10. Lots more updos!

Dirty Secret:

I often forget/ am too lazy to braid before bed. Also, I touch/ fidget with my hair way too much.

The most important elements of my routine:

1) treat the hair like old lace or a precious cashmere shawl
2) highly diluted gentle no-cone shampoo
3) CWC - no more than twice a week
4) sleep on silk (silk wrap was too restricting for my big head but silk shawl on the pillow is ideal for me)
5) wide-tinned horn comb or tangle teezer once a day
6) pre-wash oiling and oil massage with essential oils
7) mister with distilled water, oil and wheat protein
8 ) natural herbal dye
9) catnip or rosemary rinses
10) wearing it up

My hair has become very healthy following this routine.

1) No heat
2) CO and CWC
3) Cone-free and sulfate-free
4) Horn combs!
5) Keeping it up in the day
6) Braiding it for sleep
7) Light oiling when ends feel velcro-ey
8 ) Biotin
9) Giovanni conditioners
10) Satin pillowcase

It's only been less than 2 months but my hair's texture has improved vastly! It went from impossible-to-run-fingers-through to swingy soft satin curtain.

Im new to this too, but I have a different take on it:

1. Love your hair like you would your dearest.

2. It is a gift not a given.

3. Appreciate its warm and style etc, cause you never know when you going to loose it through illness etc.

4. Hairdressers arent always as knowledgable as you.

5. You hair is natures compass on whats going on inside, so feed it Biotin, Protein, Iron and lots and lots of Ceeeeeeeeeese.:cheese:

6. Your hair is what you think it is, so use positive mental attitudes towards it and it will reward you in kind.

7. Tension can kill hair off, so exercise, relax and massage the scalp

8. Trials of new hair growth stuff should last at least one month if not longer.

9. Get to know the styles that your hair likes, not all are suitable for every hair type and thus can cause damage.

10. To stop fatigue (when your body gets over sensitive to food and items used on it) rotate several hair products and foods on a regular basis.

1) Natural products only
2) Balanced and healthy diet
3) Protect hair from wind, sun and cold
4) Often wearing it up
5) Henna
6) Regular S&D (search and destroy...of split ends)
7) Not hesitate to trim if needed (approx 4 times a year is often enough)
8 ) My boar bristle and nylon brush from Mason Pearson
9) Taking some supplements according to your needs (vitamins..)
10) Try not to touch it all the time during the day

Well, technically you can't have healthy hair, because it's dead, but that's beside the point :)

This is sort of my own little list, in no particular order:

1. No brushes with the balls on the end. Just a wide tooth comb.
2. No cone products
3. Only clarify as needed (which for me is rare. Maybe every other month at the most?)
4. Braid before bed (mine isn't long enough for this anymore...)
5. Keep it up (if long enough)
6. No rubbing the towel on the ends
7. Don't rip through tangles. Be nice and ease them out
8. Only the no-metal hairties or scrunchies
9. Eat healthy and get plenty of liquids.
10. Chocolate (okay not necessarily for hair, but might as well have some fun in life!)

ArienEllariel

No particular order.

1. COing
2. Diluted ACV rinse weekly
3. S & D method
4. Combing gently from the bottom up
5. Sleeping in a braid or high bun.
6. Oiling lightly while still damp (but only from the ears down)
7. SMT's at least once a month
8. Overall just being careful with my hair
9. Using a Sulfate-free shampoo (if needed)
10. Using a brush that's hair friendly (meaning none of those nasty balls on the end of the bristles)
