I have BSL hair as you can see in my siggy and I had some layers in it, but I kept trimming until now all my layers are pretty much gone. I have been trying to grow out layers because I always wear my hair up at work (I have to), and during the summer because it gets so hot. Well yesterday I went out with some friends and had my hair down. I got to looking in the mirror after having it down and dancing for a few hours and I did not like it all one length.

My hair is quite thick and can be poofy when I get hot. I found and old pic of my hair when I first had layers and I really liked it. I just hate trying to put up my hair with layers, but I did it before. I know I will have problems with more splits because of the layers but I want my hair to be wavier and with it all one length the waves I have don't last long.

Here is the main thing, I want to cut the layers myself. I have been trying to find videos on how to do it. The main thing I keep reading is to put your hair evenly in a ponytail and cut straight across, and that should create layers. Does anyone have any videos they could recommend or pictures of your hair with layers that you cut yourself? I have already decided I want layers again, it's just a matter of how to get it done.

BTW here is a pic of when I had layers

I like it with layers, but I personally am sick of my own. I can barely even do a braid I have so many layers; I'm at BSL! I can't do any buns and my hair is really too thick. The worst part is I live in Florida where it's super duper hot in the summer. I know that NC can get pretty hot, so I would say don't cut a ton of layers you can't grow out easily. Enforce a 2 week rule.

Good luck!

Btw, your hair is a gorgeous length and color!

My only advice would be to cut very little at a time. Other than that, having similar hair to yours, i think long layers is a very good idea to prevent triangle-head. I'll cut myself layers too when i trim away my dyed ends.

I know I should follow the two week rule but I know I won't. Anyway if I don't like it I will just grow it out again. I don't plan on cutting short layers. I plan on cutting a little at a time to see how I like it, but for the ones who cut layers in their own hair, do you use the ponytail method or something else?

I used the ponytail method on both myself (when I had layers) and my daughter. It looks pretty good as long as you are very careful to have all the hair combed very smoothly from the scalp. If you have any kinks or bulges, the layers will be wonky. I always did it by putting a top of head ponytail with two hair ties, leaving one to hold the ponytail at the scalp, then sliding the other one down the length (tightening by adding another loop in the tie as necessary) until I got to the spot where I wanted to cut.

Doing it yourself is nice because you can start with subtle long layers, and if you don't like the results, you don't have much to cut to even it out again. But if you like the result, you can do it again and cut more.

(check the link in this thread to another thread on exactly this: layers, and there you'll find links to videos)

These threads keep popping up, asking for basically the same question.

In short:

These two techniques are originally from the book "Haircutting for dummies", and are called "compact cuts".

Short layers:

Long layers:
http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...d.id-1561.html (seems to no longer function)

This is another way to do the long layers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF6qu...eature=related (also no longer functioning for me)

Short layers --> pull the ponytail more to the front of the head
Longer layers --> ponytail on top of the head

I tried the longer layer method, and I have layers from collarbone to BSL. They are still pretty short for "long" layers.
