View Full Version : So I have decided the hair must go...but I need help!

I'm cutting.

I've had a two year wait to decide...much longer than a two week wait :p I want a change... I NEED a change. I have had this same hair for about a decade. I will be travelling to Edmonton for May Long weekend for a complete makeover. Hair, spa day, shopping and a kick ass dinner and a good bottle of wine to end it. My BFF will be coming with me.

I love my long hair. But I'm tired and bored of it. I had the opportunity to attend the Tyra Banks show for a makeover however, the producers informed me the show has been cancelled and this is its last season ... so that's a no go.

I plan to cut to around chin length. I figure, go big or go home. :P However, Any ideas what to do with the cut-off length? I refuse to donate it...(and I have a month to prep for the arguement that is coming from others around here) but do I just keep it? Or what... any ideas?

As well...spam me with bob length pictures please. My hair type is under my name.

I plan to remain a member of this wonderful community however because I plan to grow it out once again.:cheese:

I hope you'll like it (:
Make a braid and tie both ends and keep it like that?
If you don't find it disturbing, you could hang it on the wall or put it on display somewhere...I did this with my dreadlocks, they make a great wall hanging :P plus they're still with me.
Or give it to a dear person. If I cut my hair I plan to make thin braids and give it to my friends. They really liked the idea, it's quite personal.

My grandmother had a braid of her hair in her vanity. She kept it after she cut it when her husband died. She never grew her hair long again after that.

I also vote to keep it! Your hair is so long that with the braid you could probably use it if you went to a renaissance fair as a piece like this:

If it were me I'd just keep it. I think I'd wrap it in something nice like a silk scarf or the like. It would be a keepsake. If I didn't want to keep it, I think I'd do some kind of a ritual where I burned it.

I'd do the braid thing and keep it. I have my son's braid from when he was a teenager and grew his hair out long.

Good luck with your makeover! I know you've been wrestling with this for a long-long time, so it's not a whim. Enjoy it.

I can't help with bob pictures, though; I avoid them. The bob looks so bad on me that I can't get past it.

I think I'd braid it and keep it too, but I might hang it somewhere like Drynwhyl suggested. I hope you love your new cut! And happy future growing, with a bob you won't have to do the :silly: stage!

Hmm. bob pics.... *goes to hunt*

Maybe the hair you cut off can be used as extensions later whenever you get bored of looking at your short hair?

I would save it.
My mother saved her hair when she cut it when she was youngish.
It was wrapped in tissue paper and put in a box.
My sister and I used to love going through mom's "stuff" and we wondered at the beautiful locks of hair.

I saved a 6" swath of my hair from when I was younger. It's tied with a silky ribbon in a bag in my dresser. My parents also have my mother's braid from when she went to mid-back length to a pixie.

If you don't want to keep it, maybe you could leave it somehwere in the woods? Then maybe an animal might make a nest out of it (if that doesn't distress you).

Go for the cut! If you don't like it, after all, you can just grow it out again, right? :)

I went from waist to bob in one swoop, and I REALLY wish I had gone to shoulder instead. It was a little much for me. I may have cut it shorter after anyway, but that's just what I would do again if I were getting a big chop.

But I don't regret getting it cut at all! I wasn't appreciating having long hair anymore. I'm enjoying it much more as it's growing out. Sure, I'll be glad when it can go in a bun again, but I know it will eventually, so I'm not stressing.

Well, you COULD keep it... if I was going to cut anyway, I'd dye the mess out of it and get it trashed first. I've always wanted blue hair! Or a rainbow!! :p Anything you never did to it because you were growing it out, you are free to do! The possibilities are endless... sorta!

Well I think you should do what I heard someone else say once about if they ever get cancer. She said (or he) that she would make a wig out of it!! but hey!! i have a great idea!! If you make a wig out of it you could have long hair whenever you want!! or if you made them into extensions you could too!! (dont know if that is possible though about the extensions...?)

I'm de-lurking after a long absence and this is the perfect thread. I went through the same dilemma for the past year give or take, I toyed around with cutting or changing the color... or both. I made the plunge and did the big chop.

My first chop was a month ago and it was approximately collarbone length, a bob with swing bangs that was longer in the front than the back. And then my curls came back, with ferocity! We're talking I went from 2b to 3a easily, I'm glad I didn't get it too short the first time around because the curls surprised me, they weren't there the last time it was short!! I went back tonight to get the shape changed a bit because I was becoming more and more like a pyramid. Now it's still longer in the front than the back, about chin length, and slightly stacked in the back (and undercut to reduce the bulk) and I LOVE it!

My recommendation is to cut longer than what you're imagining, you can always go back and get more taken off. I kept my hair from the first chop in case I wanted it for strand testing because I intend to have some fun with the color. I also found a kick-butt stylist who wasn't afraid of henna and has me uber excited about changing things and mixing it up.

I'm glad I went for the change, it's been 7-8 years since I last was this length. Will I be short forever? Definitely not (still a longhair at heart) but for now I'm having fun!

Good luck with your cut!

If I ever manage to grow my hair long enough to get sick of it (lol) and decide to go short, I will keep my hair and have it made into a wig or extensions! That way I can still wear my own hair long if I feel like it!!

If you're bored of your hair I suggest to go for a totally different color and see if that would make you happy, before cutting it off. Maybe layers too or just a bit shorter, so that you don't end up regretting it. Maybe you can try on some different style wigs to see what short style looks good on you?

Make a wig. Seriously, you have so much length that you might as well. One day if you want to wear it again, you can. You never know when you or someone you know will get cancer. If I every have to chop my hair, I will make a wig. My childhood friend has pretty dominant breast cancer in her family (basically all the women on her dad's side). I promised her that if she ever lost her hair from chemo, I would find a way to get a wig made out of my hair so she can wear it. She loves my hair and said she would happily wear a wig from my hair.

Good luck with your makeover and bob. I hope you lovely time and enjoy it :flower:

I also vote keep the cut hair.

When I cut my hair. I braided it and kept it. It's wrapped in a plastic bag in a drawer. :)

Merlin

I'd vote for keeping it - several people I've known have had braids in their bottom drawer. The point is that if you decide to keep and find you've made the wrong choice then you can dispose of it - if you leave it on the floor in the hairdressers then you can't decide to keep it later!

I'd suggest getting it tied back with something pretty before they cut it off - something tells me tying it together afterwards might be an, err, challenge.

Good luck

I would sell it. There was a point that I was desperate to sell my hair but no one wanted it because it was dyed and damaged. This is WAY prior to finding LHC.

However, I'd also keep it at first before I made any decisions. You waited two years to decide to cut it, why is this decision so immediate?

SpeakingEZ
April 23rd, 2010, 03:13 AM
(I'm writing this in a second post in case mods choose to remove it.)

If you do decide to sell it, there are men out there who would pay much, much more than wigmakers would for the chance to cut it. If I did that, though, I'd make sure I had the biggest baddest male friend I could find in the next room to come to my rescue if needed.

I also vote to keep the hair. I know I have enjoyed my short hair and hope you will too. Stacked bobs are always fun as are the Katie Holmes type bob, about chin length and blunt. I think it mainly depends on your face shape.

If you are of an artistic nature, you could make some seriously awsome art with your hair. Think string art without the tacky 70's deal and much more detailed.
For those who see the art and go "Ewwww, thats your hair!?" no one needs to know. :)

Crud, I just lost an amazing (IMO) post, so here I go again.

You can cut your hair and sell/donate a majority of it and still retain some for yourself. Whether you decide to keep it for your own keepsake or to give to loved ones, I am sure you will enjoy it, without the maintenance/upkeep you have now.

You can also donate and keep some of the profits and have hair to be made into extensions.

I would suggest getting your hair cut slightly longer than you want initially, as other posters have said, it may be traumatic and you may not want to go as short as you initially planed. With your length I really don't think it will make a difference on if it will be accepted for donation or profit.

Regardless, at least keep a small braid to remember this time in your life, the reasons you are making this decision and where you are at.

I love Katie Holmes and Kate Beckingham's cropped cuts, as well as the 90's style A line wedges with super long bang/front lines. I will try to post some pics.

Are you thinking more conservative or edgier? You can always get it cut longer, but short takes a bit to grow back! If it was me, I' do a long bob, like Michele Obama's, and work my way up from there.

Have Fun whatever you choose! And don't neglect us, you must post photos since you have all of our vested interest at this time.

I agree with Merlin. Keep it, at least for now. You can always decide to toss it out later, but you can't go back and get it from the salon after you get home and change your mind. I wish you much luck in your new hair journey, and I hope you have an awesome time!! :D

....by the way, I can't believe no one picked up on the fact that TYRA'S BEING CANCELED!!! :cheer:

Wow, this gave me the chills. It seems so tragically romantic.

Good luck with your hair. My vote is to keep a braid of it too.

I would definitely keep it. In a braid with a pretty ribbon bow at each end and wrapped in tissue paper and tucked away in an ornamental box on my vanity or dresser top.

But that's just me. :bluebiggr

If you don't want to keep it around, you could take it out in the wild and scatter it to the wind. It will be picked up by birdies to be used in nests. Or you could donate it to that organization that collects hair of all kinds to make mats to soak up oil spills on the ocean. That way your tresses would be of benefit to the Earth and the creatures who live in and near our waters.

I hope that you really enjoy your salon experience and love your new look. :D

Well id definatly say youve though this through so if you feel you need the change and your ready to do it congrats! As for the cut off hair my aunt still has her pontytail from when she cut it off in her twenties. Its in a shadow box with a bow tied around the band holding it together. She has very curly hair so she smoothed it all into one big beautiful spiral before framing it :). If you dont want to have it just hanging around you could make some really cool hoemmade paper out of it :). I made paper with hair from my favorite horses mane/tail trimmings! Other thn donatingt hose are my only ideas :). And since i cant help myself i would reccomend shopping around if you change your mind on donating. I think the harity that turns hair timmings into mats to soak up oil spills is a much better use than a wig that will cost someone $200 + dollors. Yeah im a hippie :p what can i say :D?
