View Full Version : Manic Panic mixed with conditioner...good idea/bad idea?

I have a tub of Manic Panic in Vampire Red. I really want to use it on my hair today, but I was thinking of mixing it with some VO5 conditioner, as I think I may need slightly more than what's in the tub. I don't mind if it comes out lighter due to the conditioner, but I want to make sure it will still dye if I mix it. Has anyone ever done this before? I will probably end up doing a strand test, but I thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks!

Yep, it's fine. I'd suggest a cone free conditioner, and VO5 normally is. It comes out just as dark, IME.

I would suspect you and most of your shower would turn quite red, honestly.
Manic Panic (or was it Punky Colors? it was so long ago) was one of the messiest things I ever did, and it looked like I murdered someone when I washed it out :)

They are terribly messy, that's for sure! I rinsed outside with the hose like I do with henna (I'm sure the neighbors think I'm crazy). And it definitely got some stains on my hairline and ears, too. Working on them with some charcoal soap has helped though. Pics of the maroon/pinkish red results coming as soon as I can get someone to play photographer!

Ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits tends to get MP straight off skin.

I love pics. I'm considering this. I need a temporary change.

I know a friend of mine who dyes her hair all sorts of awesome colours usually mixes some dye in with her conditioner so she gets a little colour touch up every time she washes her hair.

I'm glad someone asked this question! I was thinking about this the other day. I would love to use blue over my hair more often, but when it requires two containers to do a whole head app, well, that's pretty pricey. lol

I do this with Rusk Scream colour in red.
It does look like I've been killing pigs in the shower though. And I have to remember to wear gloves, because the dye still gives wicked stains on skin even mixed with conditioner.

Here's a pic from the front, the lighting has my face washed out but the hair color is pretty accurate. I'll see if I can get a pic from behind later!

My jar of Punky said to wash the hair and DO NOT USE CONDITIONER. Wow - does hair ever feel heavy and take forever to dry with no conditioner in it. I only used half a jar to do my hair, but I sectioned my hair into panels and dyed 3 panels, then left 3 panels natural. I love the multidimensional colors that I got. It will soon be time to use the other half of the jar. Oh - I read that it will last much longer if you pour vinegar through your hair before you rinse it out. I'm going to try that next time!

All Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Color has conditioning ingredients mixed into its formula. Your hair will be soft after you put the color in. But you can use a conditioner after you wash your hair.
For the most intense results Bleach your hair, blow dry it, apply the Vampire red with a brush or with gloved-hands, put a plastic cap on, leave it on for 1 hour, shampoo, rinse, apply conditioner, wrap in a dark towel, blow dry again.
Whoa, fab red hair!
