Protective updo for APL/layered hair?

I'm been thinking of starting to wear my hair up for protection. But I really need your help, I don't know anything about updos! I only wear it down or in a ponytail.
My hair is not that long yet, about APL and layered, is there even a updo that would work for me??

So any suggestion for an protective updo for me? And what tool to use for it.

If you can gather it into a ponytail you'd probably be able to do a peacock twist with a clip. Just gather, twist a few times, and clip with the ends spraying upward :)

Maybe a messy bun with a scrunchie wrapped around it to keep some of the layers in

This is my problem too! My layers make it so hard to pull all my hair up.
One thing that I am able to do (and maybe this is because my layers are longer) is twist all of my hair back like a rope and curl it around itself like you would for a cinnabun and then I hold it in place with a 4 inch french comb. This is the exact one I use actually, it's just big enough to hold all of my apl-length hair:

This is exactly how I handled my hair as it was growing out of a chin length bob. My hair is wavy but curlier at the tips, so when I'd pull it up as described above I'd have little pieces of hair sticking out... but they were long enough that with a spray of leave-in-conditioner and a quick pinch of my fingers they would roll into cute wispy/messy curls. This was and has been my go-to hairstyle for YEARS.

A peacock twist was (and still is) my go-to style with APL (and heavily layered) hair.

You clip high enough and your layers get captured, it's still attractive, and it keeps your ends off your shoulders and back, away from harm.

If you want to make your Peacock Twist into even more of a protective updo, you can make a French Twist. It's almost the same hairstyle, but the ends are tucked in. That seems to work with layers much more than most buns, and is very easy to do with just a bit of practice.

I love double anything- buns, braids of any sort, double half-up ponytails, etc.; all of them with little accent braids of any sort also... Straight out of the shower with damp hair, twin braids are super easy to do quickly and bun up, or just damp twin buns. After I wash and condition, I'll put some coconut oil on my ends and put my hair up like that often, and they're comfy and nice and my hair is soft and awesome. :D

FrannyG beat me to it. French twists are what I use at least three times a week. They are casual enough for everyday wear but special enough for, say, work or date night. I <3 French twists!

I use faccare type hair clip. :thumbsup:

I use hair scroos to keep french twist in place. They grab on my slippery hair very well!

I also like to use hair sticks, they seem to hold well, especially if I make two small buns and skwer them together
