Hairstyles for Weddings

I am trying to decide how to wear my hair for a wedding that I am going to be a bridesmaid in. I have fine, waistlength hair. If I were going to wear an updo, how would you suggest I go about putting my hair up to make it look elegant? I'm looking for a variety of suggestions because I don't know a great deal about fancy updos in general or about the best way to wear longer hair for special occasions. Thanks in advance!

What kind of wedding is it? I mean, is there a theme of sorts? eg. classic, old fashioned, modern, medieval, retro...... you could probably tell by what the bride is wearing. And what does your dress look like? That info would be very helpful in deciding on a style.

I'm in a wedding next month too, and I'll probably just do a braided bun. The bride recently cut her long, thick hair and misses it, so I don't want to make her feel bad!

What it all boils down to is that there is only one opinion that matters here, and that is the bride's. You should ask her what she prefers.

I have always liked crown braids as wedding up do on both bridesmaids and brides and waist length fine hair is perfect for crown braids.

But as OhioLisa said the brides opinion is pretty important. Ask her before you set your mind on an up do.

I vote for a braided chinese bun http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/china-sticks/ with nice hairsticks.

I do my braided chinese bun differently though. I'll go ahead and list how I do mine, because I think it comes out better than the one shown there (though they both look very nice).

I start by ponytailing my hair mid-head in the back then;

1. Divide ponytail in half exactly

2. Braid (three strand) left and right side as close to the ends as possible, use clear/small/hair-colored elastics to fasten the ends

3. Insert hair stick horizontally thru the hair between the ponytail elastic and scalp. Make sure it's very straight or the bun will come out lopsided

4. Bring both braids up and over the stick on their respective sides, so that the ends now point to the floor.

5. Breathe deeply and smile, you're almost done :)

6. Grab the right hand end in your left hand and the left end in your right, pull them comfortably tight straight out, then place both ends together on the top of the bun.

7. Hold them tightly!

8. Grab your choice of pins (I like amish-type pins or goody pins like these: http://www.castlemountaindesigns.com/upload/articles/images/additional/10102006080707.jpg) and put one leg of the pin thru the end of the braid, in front of the elastic. Do the same to the other side, then push the pin straight down.

9. This is optional, but it makes the style look alot better, imo. Grab two amish-style pins OR bobby pins in your hair color and put them thru the top "loop" of the braid where you first put them over the stick (it's best if your pin can take the whole loop inside it, instead of sticking it thru the loop, it looks neater), then pull gently back and push the pin straight down into the bun, between the bun and scalp. Repeat on the other side.

I hope that wasn't too confusing or too complicated-seeming, because it's truly not. I can do the whole thing in something like 10 minutes. I don't have pictures/can't take any, sorry.


dividing it in half (left and right side) evenly and braiding each side, putting a hairstick thru the hair BEHIND the ponytail band, making sure it's perfectly horizontal, flip both braids over the hairstick (each on their respective side) and then down so the ends point toward the floor again, then cross them under the stick so the left is on the right side and vice versa and wrap them around the sides and over the top, use a good hair days/black self-made pin and stab thru the end of each braid in front of the elastic on the end and then down thru the inside of the bun. Then I take the top loops of the braids on that first flip and stab those with another pin on each side and bring them down into the bun too, to hide the elastics.

I think a simple low bun would be beautiful with that dress. It would be sophisticated, yet it wouldn't draw attention away from the bride.
