Summer is coming!

What do you do to protect your hair from the sun, seawater and swimmingpool-water?

The most important for me is not to expose wet hair to direct sunlight because I have noticed that my hair gets drier. Although the sun creates nice highlights in my hair, I decided to rather pay more attention to taking care of its condition, so if I let it air dry outside, I make sure I'm in the shadow. I also use nice silk scarves to protect both my hair and the head. I put the scarf on the head, then take my hair together with the scarf's corners and make a bun. I wear long dresses and big earrings during summer, so this goes together nicely and protects me against the sun.

I use L'Oréal Professionels sun protection spray. Its great and has a divine peachy smell. Also I like to wear treatments in the sun, but after joining LHC I guess I'll be using coconut oil instead :D

I dont cover my hair since Im blonde and absolutely LOVE the highlights I get from the sun... It might be damaging, but oh so pretty! :cheer: ;)

When I did have hair I would make sure I thoroughly rinsed my hair when I got out the sea or swimming pool. The chlorine or salt can really effect it. I suffered with really dry skin from all the swimming (about 4 hours a week back then).

Now I cover up with satin scarves, hats, long sleeved cotton clothes etc.

I have to wear at least factor 35 due to my Alopecia, if not I dont really burn I just freckle and go extremely dark, but I was warned not to tan etc.

When its really really hot I use an umbrella to shield my face as well.

I guess I probably look Victorian, with pasty white skin all year round.

I just bought a cheapie straw sombrero from the dollar store. Since I usually bun or pony when I'm gardening I cut a hole in the back where I normally wear them for them to poke through. Then I covered the ragged edges with masking tape to keep from snagging any hair. Lastly, I cover my bun or wrap my pony with a bandana or handkerchief for more protection/coverage before I put them through the hole. I also flipped the brim of the sombrero down so it is more umbrella-like for more face protection. It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done! I call it my Bunbrella. :p

I have to spray a UV protectant on my scalp - I'm a natural blonde with blondER highlights... so my scalp is very susceptible to burns and I get a really bad sunburn down my part if I don't!

Other than that I don't do anything differently :)

Yeah, and more step-by-step instructions too! I've never been able to figure out how to wear a scarf... they always slip off my head. :(

This is a great idea. I spend HOURS working outside in my flower and veggie gardens during the summer... and attempting to fit all my mass of hair up inside a floppy straw hat is pretty much an exercise in futility! I'm going to try your idea. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for double posting but I've just noticed the "step-by-step" element
This is the matter of practice, I guess. Also, some silk scarves are too stiff or thick, you need a very thin and flexible one. Second of all, the lower over the eyes the scarf is placed, the firmer it stays in one place. It is helpful to make a bun before placing the scarf.

s-a-m-a-r-k-a-n, how do you do this? Is your hair already in a bun and you just wrap the ends of the scarf around it? I really like the way it looks with the earrings! Aren't you cute!

Thank you :crush:

It was quite difficult to take photos, hold a mirror (on my knee ) and make the updo, so this is my best.
First I arrange my hair into a loose bun, like this:

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae358/samarkan13/DSC05380-1.jpg

The bun doesn't have to be neat or even secure.
Next I put the scarf around my head:

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae358/samarkan13/DSC05385-1.jpg

And try to cover the bun:

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae358/samarkan13/DSC05390-1.jpg

I take the two long sides of the scarf, cross it tight, make sure that all the other fragments of the scarf which shouldn't be visible, are hidden

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae358/samarkan13/DSC05391-1.jpg

I lift them up and cross again, put them down and arrange in a secure knot

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae358/samarkan13/DSC05392-1.jpg

Voila!

Yay! :cheer: Your instructions and photos are wonderful! I think I can do this with no problem. And it should work really well under my Bunbrella to help keep the perspiration from running down my forehead and neck. Thanks so much for the great tute! :flowers:

I wear a 19th century prairie hat. Those ladies sure knew what they were doing. It also keeps the sun completly off of my face, hair and neck.

I try to remember to wear a hat when I'm out in the sun, but that's more for my skin than my hair. I love the highlights my blond hair gets in the summer. :)

As for protecting it from pools, I've heard that you should get your head wet in non-chlorinated water first and let it soak that up. This is supposed to keep it from absorbing the chlorine as much.

That is so cute! Thanks for posting a little tutorial on how it's done. Hey, maybe you should post it in the "Articles" section. It seems a very handy thing to have in one's hair arsenal.

Thanks for the instructions, s-a-m-a-r-k-a-n! I did something roughly like this a few years ago but couldn't remember how I managed it.

As for other summer protection, I got the cutest sun hat from Target recently. It's a black and white floral print, and the brim is nice and big to give my poor pale skin, as well as my hair, some decent protection.

Adding my thanks to s-a-m-a-r-k-a-n for I'm gardening most days at this time of year.

Although I've plenty of hats I've been thinking recently about trying to tie a scarf around my hair for a change.

Wear your hair in a bun then put a hat over it or try coconut oil
