This thread is to answer the question of finding hair accessories and products in Australia.

Please help by recommending places you've found that shampoo you love or the hair brush you can't live without or that hair toy you have 2 of in case you lose one.

Emilio Boutique for Hair in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney stocks France Luxe and Ficcare products. They no longer stock Ficcares, I'm sure they still stock some hair accessories.

Zena Hair Fashions in London Court in Perth have a couple of Ficcares in the window, again they are expensive but you can see the real thing. The shop also says it stocks Paris Mode accessories as well.

Priceline stocks 2 henna wax treatments, both are priced at $4.99 each and they are both coneless. There is Earth & Body Henna wax treatment & Ultraorganics Clear Henna Wax with Natural Plant Extracts.

Ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/)

You can find javacentric (http://stores.ebay.com.au/Javacentric-Art-and-Craft) They sell horn combs and horn and wood forks and sticks.

David Jones sells Mason Pearson BBB.

REMO (http://www.remo.com.au/pages/default.cfm) Store sells Monoi Oil in Australia, thanks to Gilly for pointing this out

Has anyone bought from Biome (http://www.biome.com.au/) at all? They sell Giovanni hair care and other earth friendly products

Al'chemy (http://www.purist.com/) hair products, they also make A'kin skin products.

The Bine (http://www.bine.com.au/) hairclip, the Australian distributor for this product. They can also be found at the E Shed Markets and the Canning Vale Sunday Markets in Perth Western Australia.

I just have to take this opportunity to tell you that whenever I saw this thread on the old boards, at first glance I thought it said:

We're in Australia - did you get that?

And I was all

But this thread is for people that are (we're/we are) in Australia.

Sorry to continue the thread hijack, but I always got a laugh at the cute title! I understand your frustration of seeing posts about a product only to find out they don't sell or ship to your area.

You can get Sukin products from most healthfood shops and I am currently using the shampoo and conditioner, both are very nice and have no nasties in at all, they seem to have got rid of my itchy scalp at last, so far anyway!
I will let you know what its like after a few weeks of use (I shampoo Daily)

I got a load of really cheap indian herbs for hair washing at a spice house in melbourne. Really cheap, i'm talking 3 dollars a box! At the health store it is at least double that! It also sells jamila henna (the good stuff) for 1.65 for 500g!

And would you be able to redo the "Australians, Which state are you from?" survey please, that was very cool :)

Emilio Boutique for Hair in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney stocks France Luxe and Ficcare products. The range isn't huge but you can get a look at the real thing, it looks to be cheaper to order Ficcares from the Ficcare site and pay for postage rather than buy them from the shop.

David Jones also now have a range of France Luxe/Paris Mode and Ficcares.

On the sorbolene front, Newton's Pharmacy just behind the Queen Victoria Building have a nice vegetable sorbolene (made by themselves).

liluri-the spice house, not sure if it had a link.....this (http://www.multifreight.com.au/contactUs.htm) is the best i could find. it just states the address at the bottom.
You mean the archived forums will not be able to be edited and used from there? That is so sad.... :(
Well them i better hop to it!!!
This new forum has changed, i don't take too fondly to change ( i'm mostly daunted and scared by it, i am not saying i am not greatful for it being up, i truely am!!)...i hope i warm up to this place and learn all the bits and bobs soon!

I've used the shampoo bars from Biome (the rosemary one and the beer one.) They were okay, but cost $9.95 each. Now I use PLH bars. I have to order them from the US, but they're still cheaper than any shampoo bars you can get in Australia.

Liluri, you rock for making that list! That must have taken ages!!

Melrose also make an unscented conditioner base - it's about $8 for a litre.

There's also some online stores - Aussie Soap Supplies (http://www.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au/), who sells a conditioner base amongst oils and stuff, New Directions (http://www.newdirections.com.au/default.htm), who sell a conditioner base and henna and Supernaturals (http://www.supernaturals.com.au/), who sell Jamila henna.

I noticed 2 things in priceline without cones. One is a first aid hair cleanser/clarifier type thing. Yellow and red bottle. Can't remember brand. Then there was another shampoo, coconut and all natural...but is was expensivve (like almost 9 bucks) so i ddint see the point in memorising it.

I'm pretty sure they are cone free.

You can buy Aubrey Organics from this websitehttp://www.innerglow.com.au/page4.php?PHPSESSID=25d384b3d805578f01d41fac3a62e6 dd

I've ordered from them before. They give you free samples.

Jessicurl from here http://www.curly-hair-styles-magazine.com/buy-jessicurl-in-australia.html

African black soap and shea butter http://www.stampmajik.com.au/Shea%20butter.htm
I've ordered from them too and it's cheaper wholesale. (only everything comes in a huge lump in a bag rather than a container).

Oh and a question. Any of you guys had a look at the monistat thread? Have we got a similar product avaliable in australia? Any of you guys using micanizole????
I want to give it a try, whether i need to buy athletes foot cream, or 'personal' cream i will get some and try it out, preferrably something without mineral oil- so i can leave it on after i shower until the next wash without it looking greasy and blobking my pores.

THANKS in advance!! :)

I just went out and bought a couple of the cone-free conditioners off the list, so THANK-YOU for putting it up!!

I also bought some honey and a shower cap for a deep treatment, but I am going to have to wait for the pest controller to spray for ants this afternoon (it is that time of the year again) because I am worried that the ants would eat my hair in my sleep, or I would wake up with a head covered in ants. I love living in Queensland. :(

Tiny Teesha, I have used the Daktarin foot cream (on the scalp) but I am not sure about the ingredients.

thank you. Do you leave it on until the next wash? Like how do you apply it?

Personally, I just squirt a little out onto my fingertips and just rub it into the scalp, after parting the hairline in that section with a clip. I work my way through the scalp, parting it section by section at a time until I have covered the whole scalp.
I then leave it on until the next wash. It leaves the hair looking a little greasy, I'm not sure whether diluting it would make it better, or whether applying it with a dye bottle would help. I am not too fussed about picking up an extra bottle as I seem to be able to apply it to the scalp fairly well. However, my hair isn't very long so it might be easier if you have very long or slippery hair. :)
I'm going to start doing it after every wash, and I suspect it would be easier to apply if the hair was a little damp.

Natasska, did you pick that up from a health food store or buy online? If online, how much was shipping?

Excellent - I'll have to keep my eye out! I used hemp seed oil shampoo and conditioner last time my hair was long (before I knew that CO even existed!) and really liked it - it had an orangey smell to it, if I remember correctly, which was lovely. (Different brand to yours, but still good!)

I went to the spice shop again. They have some new stuff.
They basically are an indian based store, they have all sorts of indian hair/face care products. Amla shampoo etc, with cones and sulfates, to the herb in its simplest form!

They also have many oils. There are 3 i think that are not mineral oil based. look at the ingredients!!!!! Really affordable too i think! Half of health shop prices. I bought more Jamila for $1.65 for 100g. And some arrow root flour and corn start for under $1.80 each.

Yeah. Lots of Aryuverdic (i cant spell it!) stuff there. All pretty affordable-some dirt cheap. The people that work their are really nice too. They are quiet but nice.

They have Dabur Vatika and Hesh products too. Bhrijara's as well.

While I was in there, I took a quick pic of the front (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r274/tameriska/Hair%20Pics/wrap.jpg) and the back (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r274/tameriska/Hair%20Pics/wrap1.jpg) of the packet, I think that is was around the $2.50 mark
They also had some retro type headbands, and a cloth one with elastic (cloth covered) on the bottom that could be worn just as a headband (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r274/tameriska/Hair%20Pics/band.jpg), or spread out more to cover more, pic here (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r274/tameriska/Hair%20Pics/band2.jpg)

I may have mentioned this but the hair accessories shop in London Court in Perth has some Ficcares. Hello fellow aussies!!!

Great idea for a thread. I've subscribed to it. Thank you for putting those lists of products together Liluri. I didn't even notice when I posted a reply on your thread that you were Australian. My only great find is buying shea butter at the Zone stores but they are only located in Sydney. It would be great if we could list hairdressers who are long hair friendly as well as I find it hard to find hairdressers who aren't scissor happy.

In regards to the Daktarin Cream, I purchased this product online from here -http://www.homepharmacy.com.au/products/products_view.cfm?ProductID=12418. It seems to freak everyone out to be using it but in my opinion, if a cream is made for sensitive area, then it should be ok for the scalp. People pay $4k+ in Australia to have laser eye surgery. It is an unregulated industry and not covered by any health care funds which speaks volumes to me. There aren't many people who have reached old age who have had the surgery to see what long term effects it will have. That to me is crazy!

Thank you for posting the link for Jessie Curl. I'll check those products out.

Thanks girls and any guys reading!

Does anybody know where to buy good hair sticks within our shores??

Depends what you are looking for. I've been lucky enough to find some wooden sticks in stores, they are usually Sono wood from Indonesia. Javacentric (http://myworld.ebay.com.au/javacentric) on ebay sells similar sticks and are really good to deal with.

Most of my sticks are from o/seas though. Markets can be a great place to find something I've found some metal sticks in markets. But there seems to be no crafts people that make nice sticks that I know about.

Hi everyone,

I have a friend that uses the Aesop products which are apparently all natural I havn't used them myself yet as I happy at the moment with my Alchemy and Sukin products but I thought I might give it a go once the ones I have run out. I am not sure of the prices though but they do seem to have a few shops around in a couple of states the shop locations are on their website :)

I went to the Table 8 store in the Brisbane Airport DFO again today - they have some great hairtoys, if you are into a little bit of bling. I also found some tiny brown clips that will perfect for the sides of my head, without being too crazy. :D

What are the prices like?

DecafJane
June 17th, 2008, 11:50 PM
The prices are really, really cheap, and are between $2 and probably $10, but the most I have paid is $5. I would call them first - the accessories aren't "Table 8" brand, so there is always a chance that this DFO store ships them in separately. It is worth a try, though. :D

Kleins will launch a closing-down sale this weekend.

Kleins, the budget jewellery and accessories retail chain that is in receivership, will close its Australian operations over the next few weeks after attempts to find a buyer failed.

Discounts vary between stores - 30 to 70% off RRP

I'm mentioning it here as they have hair accessories.

I haven't seen any Ficcares in Brisbane - ordering online can be a pain, but from all reports, buying online is cheaper, and you'll have a greater selection to choose from.

As an example I have seen a medium silver lotus for $79.95 in a shop, just one and I've only seen about 10 and most were in Emilios at Queen Victoria Building.

Doesn't look like Emilios at Queen Victoria Building plan to stock Ficcare anymore.

If you still don't want to go online, try looking at hair accessory shops that might stock Paris Mode items. The only place I've seen them in Perth is in a little hair accessories store in the city. HTH

Hi, I wondered if any Aussies here (or anyone, actually:D) has used the Al'Chemy hair products? I live in the USA and ordered a shampoo (lavender), intensive masque and the leave-in. Do they moisturize enough? My hair's in some kind of crisis now, feels like dry straw...May be time to change the shower filter. Anyhow, I'd be interested to read some reviews of these products! :)

I've used them, and they were certainly nice (great smell), but it's hard to know how effective they were, since I wasn't paying much attention to my hair at that point.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

I use the leave-in conditioner and really like it. I'm a bit lazy with my hair, and it is really easy to just pop it in after washings and most showers, and it moisturises without leaving it gluggy or gross, and then I put it in an updo and go. :)

I use the leave in and the masque, I'm really happy with both of them. Conefree leave in that feels moisturising but not greasy. I use the masque as a pre conditioner most of the time and I put it straight on my dry hair. I love both of them. If it works well in and in small amounts in Australia (dry, dry climate) they should work for you in N.California :) I have a shampoo that I only use rarely now since finding Shampoo bars work really well.

All of the things I tried seem to only need to use small amounts. HTH

They are coneless, sulphateless, chemical less, they have many organic ingredients- they are really awesome. But dont confuse this with being gentle, the shampoo is mighty strong! More so then pears, so watch out with that :). I use the one for dry hair which has proteins and it really works well leaving my hair conditioned and full of enough protein in 2-3 washes, :) But don't overdo the protien, we all know what happens then *cruch!*

I bought my pair from Priceline too - $15, 15cm long with adjustable tension screw. They're not the ultra-professional ones, but they're much better than the old sewing scissors I stole from my Mum years ago and I plan to use them for my next trim.

I wonder, though, whether felt scissors from craft stores would be any good. They'd be sharp, but maybe not accommodating for coarse hairs? When I couldn't find hair scissors I was going to get those.

Okay, so my bottle arrived on Monday the 21st - I'm not sure how many days that is but it's not too bad. They also sent an email telling me when they shipped my order, which is good courtesy. My partner opened the package for me (it was well packaged), and apparently the bottle is quite small - I'm just hoping it's enough for two or three applications, otherwise it's too expensive for me.

I've ordered Blood Red, and I'm mixing it into my henna (no beaching). I'll post pics in The Henna Thread and my blog when I get a chance (I'm out of town at the moment; but I'm hoping to henna on the weekend, then I'll have to wait for a sunny day to get photos).

My local organics store sells Nazeer henna, which may not have purely herbal ingredients, because it comes in different shades (though they might be mixes of henna/cassia/indigo). They sell a bag (100g) of "clear" henna, which I assume is cassia. It costs around $15. At Mrs. Flannery's I've seen some "neutral" henna, but it was pre-mixed goo. Not too expensive, but there wasn't a lot of it in the package.

I think the best value for money would probably be buying it online.

Here is the information from the company about the Powder version

SURYA HENNA POWDER

Introduction to Surya Henna Powder

Surya Henna Powder is a henna based hair colour that is 100% natural and vegetal that treats the hair while it colours. Henna contains a tannin called lawsone that provides the gold, reddish and copper hues characteristic of the plant. Lawsone has a natural affinity for the hair which allows this natural dye to penetrate the superficial layers of the hair cuticles and deposit on the strands, creating a film that strengthens and gives lustre.

On damaged hair, this effect is very helpful because when hair becomes damaged by chemical processes, it has many "imperfections" or "holes" along the strands. Since the cuticles of these strands remain open, they are also more fragile and less shiny. With Surya Henna Powder application, the henna fills all these "blank" spaces, giving the hair a beautiful shiny glow.

* Natural hair colouring and nourishing treatment for the hair unlike other henna brands on the market
* 100% natural hair colouring made up of plants only; no chemicals or additives of any kind
* Guaranteed to colour grey hair in one easy application
* Semi-permanent hair colour - washes out of the hair after about 20 - 30 shampoos
* Surya Henna Powder is the highest quality henna on the market; because of this, our consumers enjoy hair colour without the risk of the "henna disasters" that have occurred with other brands. Our henna can be used on badly damaged hair (even from over-colouring with chemicals) but a shorter amount of time is recommended due to how easily the colour adheres.
* Can be applied immediately after chemical processes without waiting. Whereas most henna brands have contraindications for chemically processed hair or suggested time intervals, we actually recommend our henna for these situations with no time intervals required.
* Surya uses advanced European technology in the manufacturing of these products
* Excellent for consumers with certain chemical sensitivities and pregnant women wishing to avoid traditional hair colouring chemicals. [We suggest consulting with a doctor first when using our products and all consumers should conduct a patch test to determine allergies.]
* Different from hair preparations that use metallic salts, ammonia, PPD, peroxide and other synthetic ingredients, Surya Henna powder does not damage or change the structure of the hair
* Dermatologically tested
* Henna is a traditional plant that has been used for thousands of years both as a dye and a conditioner giving the hair a smooth, healthy texture
* Plant ingredients are from the highest quality sources in India
* Packaged in boxes made from 100% recycled paper

yeah, i skimmed through that, but sometimes companies write what ever they want. It would be nice if a third party checked it out and checked it under a microscope.
Hmm.... i might just keep getting the ones from hennasooq because it is the same price and we know it works anyway! :) It's going to be my mums money anyway so i guess she can pick. Has anyone tried that brand on grey hair, because my mother isn't fond of the orange look, the darker brown red is the look she is after.

Lush make a squeaky clean shampoo bar but it's only available on their website.

Beauty and the bees (http://www.beebeauty.com/12-shampoobar.html) has a website where they sell shampoo bars online.

Redgum (http://www.redgumsoaps.com.au/skin-care/shampoo.html) have a shampoo bar.

Savi (http://www.margaretriversavi.com/socatalogue_view.asp?codeID=shampoobar1) have a shampoo bar.

There's this neem (http://www.organicsaustraliaonline.com.au/prod3752.htm) shampoo bar that I've tried and like apart from the strong perfume.

This (http://www.hempco.net.au/shopping/catalogue_view.asp?codeID=CHSMRB) site.

And lastly this (http://www.ausieolive.com.au/_listrange.php?id=00007) site.

I hope that helps, I've tried some of these bars and my number one pick is the Savi bar, followed by corrynne's one.

I think you will need to experiment to find the oil that you like so it's hard to say this particular oil is great, as you might not like "this" one, or indeed that one.

My suggestions would be to go to a health food store and buy a jar of Melrose coconut oil.

Or at Coles or Woolies buy some Avocado or/and Olive oil, you can also find Camellia oil there. All in the cooking aisle You can then add some essential oil to them or your favourite BPal.

There's an Indian Grocery in Northbridge on William street, I haven't been there but I have been told they have lots of Indian hair care including Dabur Vatika, though it's not to everyone's taste.

Health shops that sell Tinder box might also have her hair oil which smells divine, but I haven't tried it yet.

HTH.

And woot another hair person in Perth :)

Are you talking about Kakulas Brothers? They sell all the Indian hair oils, if so there's one in Fremantle too, with a wider selection.

My auntie in Melbourne is an aromatherapist, she has an entire room in her house devoted to making creams and toners and medicines with essential oils and stuff. I might ask her about making me a custom oil. She's made me face creams and an antiseptic gel for when i had lymphatitis once. If it turns out well I' sure she could do some custom orders...

And yay - a perth person!

I need to ask again! haha...i went to get some henna from the Surya site for my mum, but it was really costly! 11 for only 50g!
Is there anywhere that sells henna for a decent price?! With shipping not equal to the product price! I went to henna sooq! it went up to $55 for 2 henna, indigo and cassia. I cannot afford that.
I'm fine spending about $15 per 100g. or less of course. And shipping to be around the $5-10 mark for 100g.

Where do you guys get your henna from, my mum is over the Jamila!!!

I really wanted to buy some ketylos - I need some nice hairsticks, and some slightly shorter ones than what I've got at the moment. Unfortunately, the exchange rate plus shipping just makes it unreasonable - I can't quite bring myself to spend $AU47 on a single pair of hairsticks, even though they're beautiful.

So, I want to know if anyone knows where I can get some wood hairsticks either at an Australian store, *or* an Australian seller on the internet, so I don't suffer so much from the exchange rate.

Anyone found anything new recently?

Hello, and it's normal to be nervous. I hope you have a great time in Sydney. Welcome to the country of no hairtoys.

It depends where you are going to live but in your exploration of the City have a good look around in the Queen Victoria Building (http://www.qvb.com.au/IPOH/QVB/me.get?SITE.home) there is Emilio Boutique for Hair, they are one of the few stockists of some high end hairtoys, but you will die at the prices. Perfect Potion is in the QVC as well and they sell some good oils and herbs. I've found interesting hairtoys in Paddy's markets. Myers and David Jones department stores usually sell Mimco hairtoys where I have found one or two things that I like. HTH

Have fun :)

I don't want to pay for wood that has come from overseas - so Australian timbers better be suitable! So far I have Red Cedar, Silky Oak (which personally I don't like to turn because it's so dusty) Camphor Laurel, Beefwood (so called because it grows in cattle paddocks!) Australian Maple (possibly Queensland Maple) and some un-known eucalypt. I admit I did buy some timber such as purple heart because I just had to try it!

I tried just using an oil and wax coat, but have found that I really need a shellac finish to bring out the wood and make it smooth for the hair. And if you don't know what shallac is, you might want to leave it that way. heehee Let's just say it's all natural!

Hi there,

Another South Aussie signing in. I note that the references to our lovely city of Adelaide are a bit thin on the ground, so will add a few notes on oils:

Coconut oil - the health food shop in Rundle Mall, a few shops down from Beehive Corner (aka Daryl Lea chocolates). They have coconut oil (not Parachute) that's both refined and unrefined, located near the back of the store - $10 for 350ml. The virgin stuff can smell quite... unrefined, so remember just because it's virgin coconut doesn't mean it smells like Parachute.

Hemp seed oil -"Hemp Hemp Hooray" brand. I use this on my skin, not on my hair. It smells a bit grassy and is a deep green colour. Also purchased from the above shop, $30 for 200ml.

Coconut oil - Parachute brand, and also bulk oil for cooking. "Ceylon Spices", near the Holden Hill Police station intersection, can't remember the street name, but just off North East Road. They also have your general Indian Supply Store goodies, including Vatika hair stuff, neem oil (what do people actually use this for?!) and others. Bonus: has walls of spice mixes and curry pastes. :) :) It sells Parachute coconut oil in... ONE LITRE CONTAINERS!!! Is this brilliant, or what?!

Mahdena - A shop on Magill Road, between The Maid pub and Portrush Rd. This is a good place for (slightly more expensive) natural oils. I've had apricot and avocado oils from here, as well as 500g shea butter. Give yourself a while to shop here; a small shop, but the smells are amazing! (She stocks natural makeup and other things, incl. body butters, too).

I am trying out more CO conditioners- I find the Kiwi Lime Squeeze builds up easily, it's just a bit waxy for me... the Tresemme is going pretty well but I need to alternate it with something else.

Has anyone tried the Coles SmartBuy Everyday Conditioner? I bought this one today- around $3.29 for a litre. The ingredients are:
Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Peg 60 Almond Glycerides, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Cl 19140, Cl 16225.
Pretty basic stuff but I'm hoping it is light enough to use as a wash conditioner.

I also purchased Pears Clarifying- will try that this week as I'm interstate and it is in a smaller bottle than the Coles!

The Coles SmartBuy conditioner is not that different from the Aldi one I've been using for over six months (Water, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Peg 60 Almond Glycerides, Fragrance) - in fact, the only thing different about them is that the Coles one has the two Methyl-s - which I believe are preservatives rather than cones - and two dyes. Going from my experience with the Aldi one, it's REEAAAALLLLY cheap and runny which is great, as you said, for a mild wash conditioner, but it is not a good *conditioner* and you will need to follow up with something else.

I've been using the Pears Balancing Care for the last month, though, because I ran out of the Aldi stuff. The Pears conditioners are practically identical:

Legend (colours correspond to the packaging, preserving the stated order of the lists)
In all of them
In Clarifying only
In Moisturising only
In Balancing only
In Everyday only

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, DMDM Hydantoin, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Propylene Glycol, Citrus Medica Limonium (lemon) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantifolia (lime) Fruit Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aloe Barbadensis, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Mangifera Indica (mango) Fruit Extract, Prunis Persica (peach) Fruit Extract, Panthenol, Passiflora Edulis Flower Extract, Mentha Pipperita (peppermint) Leaf Extract, Lavandula Angustiflora (lavendar) Extract, Rosa Canina Flower Extract, Fragrance.

As you can see, the only appreciable difference in the included ingredients has to do with marketing, not function (with the exception of Vitamin E which is in greater abundance in the moisturising than the balancing, and lacking from the clarifying. Plus panthenol in the moisturising, which may help your hair but the peer review literature suggests doesn't work in wash-out formulas.)

According to the Beauty Brains (http://thebeautybrains.com/2006/08/27/do-vitamins-in-tigi-bed-head-reconstruct-your-hair/) Vitamin E has nothing to do with hair, but it might be good for your scalp anyway. I've really liked the Balancing Care one so far - it is more moisturising than the Aldi one, but it's usually about $4/bottle ($10/L) compared to $2/bottle ($2/L) so even when I bought Pears at half price, Aldi is cheaper.

My thoughts so far is that Pears is superior to Aldi (and I'd expect to the similarly formulated Coles SmartBuy) but it comes at a cost. As to which Pears variety to get...it seems like you might as well choose the nicest smelling one as there is no fundamental difference between them.

Thanks BittSweetCherry. I figured the Coles might be like the Aldi- well I was hoping so! I can't actually buy the Aldi as we don't have Aldi yet in South Australia. Hopefully we will someday soon!

I CO'd with the Coles SmartBuy and it was great- nice scent, rinsed easily, hair is gaining good volume as it dries (which is important for my waves!), pump pack. Definitely doesn't feel waxy like the Alberto one.

I did use the Pears back when it was the previous formulation- I remember loving my litre of Pears Lavender! I am looking forward to using the new formulation, which I have only tried as S&C, not CO, though not for a few years.

I don't mind if the wash conditioner isn't enough to actually be conditioner- I am still using S&C with Biolage once a week which seems to stop my scalp being grumpy at me, plus I have a rather large leave in collection!

I also found some basic formulations on New Directions (http://www.newdirections.com.au) from around $9-17/litre. These all seem to have a creamy consistency (it's listed for each formula) so might be suitable for dilution and use as a wash conditioner too.

I noticed too that the ingredients of these basic conditioners are remarkably similar to those posted in the Sorbolene thread. Has anyone tried it?

Funny story: I had an allergy test when I was a kid (the kind where the doctor makes a matrix of pricks on your arms and adds a drop of a common irritant on each) which yielded very little, but when they instructed me to wash my arm with the Sorbolene afterwards, every spot swelled up. I do use it on my skin whenever I'm desperate, but it's not that useful to me. I am tempted to try the vegetable sorbolene that Knightslady uses, but I would be buying it because I need a skin moisturiser - generic sorbolene brands often have lanolin and paraffin, which some people are sensitive to, and might be my problem.

The Nature's Organics Vegetable Sorbolene is a good one as a body moisturiser. I find the paraffin/mineral oil sorbolenes far too greasy- ugh!

As a body moisturiser at the moment I am using the Cocoa Butter lotion from Target (bronze packaging)- a litre pump pack is $20 but they make a smaller tube too. I think it would be too rich to attempt on my hair but it's really nice as a body lotion. Ingredients are:
Purified water, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Triethanolamine, Dimethicone, Vitamin E, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Titanium Dioxide, Disodium EDTA, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.
It smells yummy!

Some people react to the preservative in sorbolene too. Sue Dengate mentions it on her Fedupwithfoodadditivesdotcom site.

Any recommendations of where I can get a decent comb, or will I have to order online from the US?

I bought huge detangling combs a few years ago from Price Attack- they weren't a name brand. Don't know if they still have them or not but I am sure there is something similar!

Hi Teesha,

I have some Amish pins that Liluri sent, but I've never used them. I prefer the more flexible hair pins. If you want them, they're yours.

What a great thread, thanks for all your work in collating this :). Good luck with the job tiny_teesha. I recently bought the Melrose coconut oil/butter in my local health food store for around $10. Has anyone managed to find wooden combs in Perth, or am I better just to try ebay?

Has anyone managed to find wooden combs in Perth, or am I better just to try ebay?

I've gotten some jarrah combs from a trader inside a mall once and I've also gotten an alchemy set that included a vitamin masque, leave in conditioner and a wooden comb in a local health food store, though it was a Christmas special. But nothing permanent that I can suggest, The Body Shop used to sell woden combs but I'm not sure they do anymore in Australia.

Hello fellow Aussies!

If anyone in Brisbane needs Henna, I am sharing info: the Indian grocery store in the McWhirter shopping centre (if it can be called so) in the Valley has just receivd a shipment - there is Hathi Henna ($10 for a kilo) and Nupur (2.75 for an 80gm packet. The Nupur also contains Amla and another herb).

I cannot vouch for the quality of the henna, and it is packaged in India so there is no garantee that it is 100% pure, but for those who cannot always afford to order BAQ henna it may be an alternative - it is a credit crisis after all :)

Other places selling henna (they all have red, brown and clear so it is obviously not pure henna either although they are all labelled "100% henna") are: the organic store on Brunswick street in the valley (i think i is on the corner of Merthyr road), which sells Nazeer henna, Happy High Herbs on the corner of Ann & Duncan in the valley, and the Perfect Potion stores (they are in the Valley, in the city and in Westend). Prices are around $15 for 100 gms.
Oh, and Lush on Queen street of course ($25 for a 250gm bar).

Nat242 I saw a previous post where you said you found Jamila henna in Brisbane? I would love the address but i cant pm yet as i am still a newbie...

Thanks for all that info - that's great! I did find Jamila at an Indian Grocery store in Woolloongabba, but I'm not impressed with the quality. It didn't seem to have particularly strong dye - maybe it wasn't stored properly, or it was really old, I don't know.

I need to henna again, I'm going to check out one of the suppliers you mentioned. Thanks for sharing them!

Cheers, they do look great. Now i know where my next pay is going!

A rather stupid question: I notice the sticks are waxed - i am just a tiny bit worried because i henna, then indigo my hair and everything my hair touches for a couple washes afterwards turns blue... I rinse with ACV but the blue always runs anyway. I have been using regular chopsticks in my hair (which my bf finds hilarious) and they are all covered in blue. Do you reckon the wax would prevent the colour from damaging the sticks?

Best to convo the maker through Etsy and ask her opinion.

An addition to the No Cones list: Eden Organics (as far as I can tell.)

Ingredients of the conditioner
purified water, sorbitan olivate and cetearyl olivate, organic apple cider vinegar, organic safflower seed oil, organic avocado fruit oil, natural d-panthenol, organic bitter orange extract, horsetail extract, organic geranium essential oil, organic nettle extract, organic sage extract, organic rosemary extract, organic burdock extract, organic patchouli essential oil, peru balsam essential oil.

And a request: I want a hair fork, but I'm not after anything very expensive. Where should I start looking (in Sydney)?

I don't know if I'm telling old news but I'd never seen them before - Go-Lo has plastic hair slides which seem to be designed just like a ficcare, with the bent shape to fit over buns/twists. They are kind of heart shaped on the top and not long and thin. As I've never seen/used a real ficcare I don't know if it will suffice for those searching for or familiar with Ficarre. They are all plastic except for the clip part which is designed like a butterfly/claw clip with the metal bolt holding through it. I've been using mine all week with no problem it is excellent under hats! The slide was $2. I will try to post a photo in my album very soon.

Go to the top of the page and click on "The Long Hair Community" - the logo.
