My Easy Hair Stick Style

This is my "easy-hair-stick-style" that I came up with during some boring lessons at high school. It takes less time for me doing this, than a nice, ordinary, good-looking ponytail, and it's so much more fun!

For me, being ii, this works best for APL or just below, but you could probably tweak it a bit to make it look good for BSL too.

All you need is a hair stick, chop stick, pen or pencil (or whatever you can find.)

Grab hair into a ponytail

Take you hair stick and put it under the ponytail

Change your hold on the hair, so you give the stick some turning space. You can either keep the stick quite close to the head or a few inches out from it, both works for me at least.

Now start turning the stick upwards and around. Hold your ponytail still, but let the hair slip through your hand as you twist. Let it be a 360 degree turn, the hair stick should point the same way when you have finished as when you started.

Now turn another 90 degrees so the end of the stick points upwards and stick it down behind the base of the ponytail and out again below it.

It should look something like this when finished. I have some strands sticking out because of having layers and a bit to long hair for this, but it gives the up do a messy look.

Important: when doing this up do, you need to tweak it a bit all the time during the procedure in order to make it come out with a firm but gentle hold. Especially the last part can make the scalp hurt, so do it carefully the first times to get a good feel of how it all works.

And, by the way, I'm left-handed, so you might want to do it the other way around if you're right-handed.

Hairsticks are my favorite things! I have about 50 of them... You can do anything with them really I do all kinds of diffrent buns and knots and when I oil my hair I stick it up in hairsticks so the ends saturate and when I wash it its so silky smooth... if you want pm me and I will try to find you links but im at work right now and cant list them

I definitely need to buy one once I manage to find a hairstick that's long and thick enough, I went shopping for them once but only found the ones the size of a pencil :( I'm just really clueless as to what to do with them. I've been practicing with this porcupine quill that I have but it's really sharp and really hurts my scalp :uhh:

Yep, this is the Hairstick Knot, aka the Mrs El Knot. I used to do this when my hair was BSL. Now that it's waist it's way too heavy to keep up with this method so I had to abandon it, but it's still a cute style.

I could never do the Ms El Knot, but I managed this on the first try, possibly because I'm kind of left-handed (I was a lefty till I started school, and then I switched, but there are still some things I do with my left hand) and so seeing the directions the lefty way made it much easier. My hair is nearly tail bone length and I wear this knot. With 1 360 twist I have a shoulder blade length ponytail and with 2 complete twists I have a neck length tail. I've only recently discovered the joys (and cost) of hair sticks, and haven't quite figured out what to do with the tail of my hair...if I'm only using a stick to secure it, what do I do with the tail?

I ended up doing what you did and then I twirled the rest of my hair around the knot and secured it with a second hair stick. I still need to practice getting the right tension at the end though. Thanks for the tutorial :)

Thanks for this one! I had to use my longest chopstick and twist around an extra time or two, but now my hair is up and it feels quite comfortable. I had a long tail hanging down, so I wrapped it around the base. I think I'll need a hair pin to make it stay.

I did thought it was something like the Mrs. El Knot, but I couldn't do it that way when I tried. But I did look at it again just now and the only difference is that in the tutorial at LongHairLoom you twist your hair around the stick, and then twist the stick. This probably is the trick to make it work for longer hair. :) Either way, I like that name better than mine, I just couldn't find a good name. :)

Does anyone know what is the difference between the HairStickKnot and a Wrapped Orchid Bun?

I wear what I thought is a Wrapped Orchid, a lot. But I can't tell the difference between what I do and instructions given here. I'll go view the video, again.

Ohhh thank you SolSara, I had never seen this before and it was so easy too! Kind of a french twist look to it, or maybe I twisted it a bit differently? Anyhoo, it is very secure feeling, and it lets me have a bit of tail hanging down too.

I tried this with hip length hair and though I had to turn it a little extra, it worked out just fine with just a few inches of ends hanging out. Looked pretty good, too. Thanks for sharing!
