Hey guys & gals :) I know everyone is always on the search for a good, not too expensive brand of henna so I thought I'd just pop in and give a recommendation.

I usually order Jamila henna for hair from Halalco, it's $1.50 per 100g. It's pure Jamila henna, it's just not sifted as fine as BAQ henna. I had no problems with it, but yesterday I was bitten by the henna bug. Do you guys ever get like that? My roots were atrocious and I needed henna NOW! I couldn't wait to order it online. I had henna fever. So I drove to the local Indian grocery store, and by local I mean 40 minutes away (I love the Midwest!) It was a beautiful day outside - I rolled the windows down, turned the radio up, and enjoyed the ride.

Anyway, I digress - the point of this post is the henna, not my journey to GET the henna. I got Dulhan brand henna - actually I believe it's called 'Seasons Dulhan.' The box says it's for mehendi, and it has photos of beautiful mehendi on the front. On the back, however, it lists the other herbs it contains (amla, shikakai, aritha, bhringraj, brahmi) and their effects on HAIR. It also has instructions for applying it to the hair. So, I'm going to say it's being sold for mehandi and is BAQ. I've found it sold online in some places and they all say it's BAQ. The boxes are all date stamped, and mine was from March 2009. A 100g box cost me $1.99.

So.... BAQ, 2009 crop henna for $1.99 per 100g? Am I dreaming? Will somebody pinch me? I'm not entirely sure what region it's from, but on my hair, I don't notice a lot of regional variations when it comes to henna. I bought three boxes and mixed them all up when I got home, with hibiscus tea, LOTS of olive oil, cinnamon and paprika, and a teensy bit of lemon juice. I put the bowl of henna over a pot of simmering water, covered it with saran wrap, went to color guard practice for three hours and when I came home, my henna was ready.

I left it on overnight, as I do all of my henna, wrapped in a plastic bag, a turban wrap, and a towel. When I woke up in the morning, it was a breeze to rinse out. I used some cheapie conditioner to help rinse it out and to kind-of CO wash.

My hair looks and feels AMAZING! I got a beautiful rich, deep red stain, comparable to when I used Yemeni BAQ henna. It's shiny and soft and all those other delicious things that henna does to your hair. I had almost inch-long roots and I did a full head application just for the fun of it, and it most spots it blended almost perfectly. I am very very pleased with this brand of henna :cheese:

in natural light, by the window. The ends are still a little bit wet and also freshly oiled, which is why they look so... chunky :)

in the bathroom

So.... next time you are in need of good henna and don't want to throw down the big bucks, head on over to the Indian grocery store and see if they have this brand! Because it kicks serious booty.

I use Dulhan soley as my henna these days. The local Indian grocery used to sell it for $1.09 per 100g, but it's now $1.49 per 100g. Still a good deal, but quite the markup in one go. Which is why it's incredibly difficult for me to ever want to shell out ten times that amount for mehandi.com or hennasoog or whoever else is out there. In addition to charging sooo much more for what is probably the same crop (my Dulhan comes stamped with the manufacturing date and I always buy the freshest - just a few months old), shipping is murderous. For $1.09 or $1.49 plus tax I've got myself 100g of henna that I get a damn good stain out of. Certainly the stain is better than the one time I did break down and buy a kilo from one of the recommended henna sites six years ago.

I get my henna at my local indian store for 1.29- 2.99. I just bought some 300 grams henna/indigo mix for 5.99. I uused it today, doesn't cover my 30 or so gray roots, but hendigo rarely does. It did tone down the too-bright reds though. They blend in more.

As far as I know, Dulhan is not a brand and there are different brands selling Dulhan henna, Dulhan meaning bride. So I assume it is used for bridal tattoos, which might mean Dulhan is another name for BAQ henna.

Catysue, to make you a little envious, I have to tell you that I bought Dulhan today, 500gr for $3.5 ;) But that's because I live in a country closer to henna importers.

I don't know what the boxes look like for everyone else, but my local Dulhan powder comes in a box like this (http://www.ishopindian.com/dulhan-mehendi-deluxe-henna-powder-pr-24151.html).

Mine comes in the boxes like Zombiekins, but it was $12 at a local ethnic food store! I'll be trying it soon though on my roots, in a gloss.

Holy cats, Fractalsofhair!! That's crazy expensive! I went back to my local Indian grocery a few weeks ago and it looks like they just cant decide what to sell dulhan henna at. First it was 1.09 (as i mentioned before), then it was a crazy jump to 1.49, but when I went last it was 1.29. So I bought the last four boxes (manufactured in october last year) and have used the first on my roots yesterday. Looks good. Really, really strong stain. I was worried at first because my last one didn't seem to leave the kind of stain it should have (many factors, so I can't say for sure it was the henna itself), but after a few minutes on my bare skin while wrapping up, I've got carrot fingers! My roots are a gorgeous red and that was just after rinsing. The next few days should deepen things up perfectly.

Oh yeah, handy tip for hennaers. If you've got a semi-private back yard (or don't mind giving a show), use a hose with a multi-spray (or shower only) nozzle to rinse out your hair. Holy freaking crap! Ten minutes rinsed out my hair better than fourty-five minutes+conditioner in the shower.

I've heard so many good things about this henna and it turns out my local grocer carries it as well. Obviously the straining power is good, but I was wondering what the sift of this was like compared to BAQ henna? I have dreads so don't want it to be super gritty & hard to rinse out :(

I have never ordered the 'expensive' henna, so I can't really compare, but I use this and it seems very finely sifted to me... just a very fine powder. Also, I have started mixing mine with olive oil (I have a thread on it somewhere) and it is WAY easier to rinse the henna out and does not seem to effect the stain.

Curlynikki says Dulhan is slightly gritter than Jamila and not as easy to apply. She likes it otherwise, though, for the price!

Wow, I must be shopping in the wrong places. I couldn't find anything of good quality (or bad!) for a price decently cheaper than ordering something online... It's all at least $12 per 100g. Being as cheap as I am, I cannot settle for this. XD I'll have to find more stores next time I buy some.

i use dulhan deluxe pure henna.. it doesnt have the other herbs though.. ive been using it for like 2 years now.. it is better than some of the expensive stuff i tried when i first joined.. it seems they discontinued the pure powder though... now all i can find is the stuff mixed with amla.. if i remember amla tones down the red.. i want bright red so i dont like the idea of adding amla

I had recently got a dulhan brand henna and since it didn't have anything written about hair on it, i was not sure but it says pure henna powder though. So i am giving it a try...like all the good comments abt the brand.....how is it going with all of you? still using the same brand?

I just used Dulhan Henna in my last henna session a few days ago and it worked well.
My box had a picture of a woman with henna on her hands, at the bottom there were small words that said something like, "works for hair too." lol

I oiled 2 days in a row before using it and didn't wash my hair, but I still had really good color. :)

If I see it, I'll probably get it again. It worked well.

Hope you enjoy your Dulhan Henna Chotee. :flower:

Despite living in a town with a high Indian population, there are no Indian shops locally. :( Think everyone I know from here drives to Southall for their goodies. (Although I actually met someone today who might be able to nab me some Dulhan, I will ask - thanks for putting it in my mind).

Your hair looks fantastic, btw. :thudpile:

So- the Dulhan is awesome! I really love this stain, and this price. I was up all night with it on my head, but that's another story (I did start re-watching Charmed though, so there's that.) I mixed 200g with really strong rooibos tea, some ACV, a big squirt of honey, and vatika coconut oil- which I got at the same time. I let it sit in and on my oven for about 6 hours to wait for full dye release, though it was almost immediate at the top layer. Anyway, I had the mix on my head for about 8 hours, and it was a bit drippier than I remember henna being (of course I was always asleep during, so who knows?) It also stained my hairline, which was a first. I oiled it but perhaps that encouraged the staining? It's mostly faded now, but there is still a hint of orange in the sun- see last photo.

Does Dulhan give a cooler red stain or a more orange-y stain? I'm trying to achieve a dark cherry color... =)
