View Full Version : Hair age/ hair health on Dr. Oz.........

Dr. Oz was talking about how hair can be 'older' than our chronological age by the bad things we do to it..... he talked about heat styling, chemical color, etc, showed frayed cuticle, how what we eat, supplements etc can make our hair healthier..... most of the women were 10-15 older in their hair.......

one of the solutions he gave for damaged hair was an oatmeal and banana mask-

pretty cool to see 'mainstream tv' talking about this.........

He even mentioned a link on his website for a quiz that will tell you your 'hair age' (haven't looked it up yet)

ETA- Link for hair quiz http://www.self.com/beauty/quizzes/hair_age/hair_age
Quiz wasn't as great as I thought it would be, but again, cool that they are mentioning some of the stuff we all already know......

Meh . . . my hair is one year older than me :)
I guess I should be more protective when outdoors, but I haven't been part of this community in the hot summer outdoorsy months, so we'll see how it goes :D

My hair is 17 :)

Dr Oz has also talked about how you don't really need to wash your hair every day. Thats pretty crazy for a lot of people :P

My hair was 11-years-old. Haha. That's hilarious, because my hair is in much, much better condition now than it was back then.

My hair is almost nineteen. :) I hope some of the stuff Dr. Oz talks about catches on with the public! I still need to convince the boyfriend (who has shoulder-length hair already) that he doesn't have to wash every day.

My hair was also 1 year older. One of my favorite things to do with long hair is drive around with my sunroof open and hair blowing around. I guess I'm not super-protective of it, but I also don't damage it with chemicals or heat.

My hair is 17, so 6 years younger than me. I lost points because I don't trim - but who needs to with catnip preventing pretty much ALL splits on me? LOVE that stuff!

<H2 id=qpTitle>How old is your hair?

FIND OUT HOW YOU DID

Your score: -17

Add or subtract that number from your actual age to get your hair's age. (If you're 31 and your score is +5, your hair's age is 36.) Is your hair younger? Older? We'll show you how to keep it healthy.

27 - 17 = 10

My hair is 10 years old :D

And yes, my mom (52) has a beautiful, youthful head of hair, just like when she was young and only 10 greys. I was happy to give her credit for that.

My hair is 17 years old, now if i could just get back to that age in my own years! I had such fun at that age.....and was so thin! :( when will science find the fountain of youth? ;)

I am so glad to know that mainstream is also worried about hair and how to care for it better, plus the good habits to not only care for it now, but in the future.

Interesting topic, but I couldn't open that link, I'll try tomorrow again (when my connection is faster)

I find that when people are not taking care of their hair, their hair often looks 'old', often you can judge someone's age by their hair without even seeing their face. But that is not possible with LHC members!

I agree.... I also think this may be their is such an aversion to long hair on 'older' women (by that I mean over 30 or 40, and yes, that is sarcastic, :) ).... when you are young, no matter what you do to your hair (for the most part) it looks good.... when you are older, if you don't take care of it, it looks crappy. I think if people saw HEALTHY, beautiful long hair, they wouldn't be so against it.......

Heh. That was interesting. My hair is 11 years younger than I am, which is ancient.

The fact that I let my hair grow until I cannot stand it was the Very Bad Thing.

I got -5. I think the diet question hurt me ( I picked the "try" option in the middle), as well as the stress question. So, my current age is 34, which makes my hair age 29.

I was surprised to find
(as of when I took test)....with every question I was in the highest % (ei. 14% smokers / 85% nonsmokers)
EXCEPT one...how often you get your hair cut....most cut every 3-6 months, I but untill I cant stand it...
it was fun thanks!!

My hair is a year older than me. So my hair is 18...

I lost points in not cutting my hair and I think I lost marks to do with my mam's hair. I don't see what her hair has to do with mine. My hair texture is closer to my dad's than it is to my mam's.

I don't eat meat either (I'm vegan) and most of my friends don't but have good hair. If you have a balanced diet, hair will be healthy.

I scored -3, I think my hair is better than that :D

WOW! Am I the only one whose hair is their exact age? -/+ 0
Yeah, I smoke, and I am middle of the road when it comes to diet, I only cut my hair whenever it needs it- be that 1/4 inch every 8 months, or 1 inch a year, and my hair has always been fine, but hey, that's genetics. Everyone in my family has fine hair. I do take amazing care of my hair tho!

Me too, I'm vegetarian and had to pick the first answer because I eat healthy food about 98% of the time, but I wish there was an answer option for us... as for how eating no meat affects hair, I think it's okay as long as you eat plenty of other foods with protein and iron sources (tofu, soy, lentils, green vegetables, etc).

Yeah, I agree. I picked the second option, purely because my diet isn't always healthy (whoops). I wish there was a veg*n option. Would've made the test a bit easier.

My hair is one year younger than me, which is pretty good. Better than older, I guess!

The funny thing is, i feel like my hair is better overall being a vegan than it was when i wasn't!

I think it was a good idea for this quiz, hopefully it will help alot of people that don't usually think about their hair to understand heat and chemical damage isn't doing them any favours! My hair was only one year younger than me, so I have much improvements to make too!

Their wasn't always the right option for me so i had to go with something else sometimes but got Your score: -3 . About to turn 19..So i guess my hair is 16 years old. That's pretty good XD. I probably lost points on trimming and stuff..but i don't need to that often! It'd be cool if their was one especially made for us LHCers lol
Am i the only one who went back and answered all the questions to see what it said when i put in *bad for your hair* answers?:p Apparently it can get up to 14 years older then yourself. It is pretty cool it was on TV. Usually a lot of bad information comes with the good. Usually trying to make you buy something..or having a few things wrong and some right. Lately though I've noticed people are leaning more towards natural products. Their even coming out with "low sulfate" shampoos and conditioners with oil in them. Its a start eh?
I still like how theirs a uniqueness of having long hair now though :D because not so many people do.

Has anyone tried a banana hair mask? Dr. Oz recommends it. I have tried it once and it was a mess because I didn't blend the banana until it was smooth so pieces got stuck in my hair. This time I blended it with olive oil and a bit of mayonaise. It's on my hair right now! :)

This time I blended it with olive oil and a bit of mayonaise. It's on my hair right now! :)Be very very careful with a mashed banana hair mask. I tried it and had dried bits of stinky banana in my hair for several days. They wouldn't wash out. It was horrible. Since then I haven't been able to eat anything with banana in it. Just the smell makes me want to :puke: I've read on here that a jar of banana baby food works well. I don't plan on ever trying it but I thought someone braver than me might want to.
