[A Note from the Moderators: Please be aware that images posted on the Mane Board are visible to everyone on the internet, not just members here.]

After seeing all the amazing pics from the 'curlies: brush your hair picture thread' I thought it would be fun for a thread for our single braid photos. I love the look of a simple tight single braid. Here's one of my many attempts at getting a neat one...

I'll be joining in on this as soon as my hair dries - I conditioned it, post trim, and it's still wet. I love this idea! Are all braids allowed, or just single english?

Aww, thank you Ravenne! That butterfly is really special to me, because it was given to me by a very sick friend, who has since passed on. It was her favorite, and she wanted to make sure it went to a home where it would get used, and loved. So when I wear it, I think about her, and I know she's with me. :)

Bluna: pretty dutch braid! I can never seem to get those to work right.

I washed my hair tonight, and braided it for bed. However this time, I done it slightly different. I made it loose and to my surprise, there were no bumps sticking out! Also don't mind the hole in my wife-beater shirt, I also get holes in them for some reason :D lol!

Look, I have Yoda hairs sticking out (always happens after I wash and condition):

You are very welcome. It's the only way I'll wear an English braid. Since it starts up high, I don't get those tangles at the nape of my neck. I'm not sure why, but it appears thicker than if you just start braiding at the nape.

For english braiding, I really like the 4-strand start for a 3-strand braid method. It keeps the braid very neat at the top.

I thought I'd post again. I'm getting ready for bed, and my braid always comes in handy for when I wallow around in my sleep LOL. I did something slightly different this time, and I don't think I've posted this variation before. So here goes: The french braid ponytail

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/frenchbraidponytail.jpg?t=1270086326

I give full credit to the members here, who told me to use a rat tail comb or brush to smooth out my sections before crossing them. As you can see, there are no bumps! As I got the bottom of my neck, I decided to secure it with a ponytail tie.

I couldn't have done none of this, without my faithful Super Mario Bros. pajamas that I'm wearing! That red flower really kicked in! :D

Wow, what a coincidence, I just took a pic of my braid tonight! :)

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=996&pictureid=68536

It looks a lot fatter than usual because of a clay experiment gone wrong - in fact, that was why I took the pic, to capture this nice thickness for days to come.

I started with a minuscule section of hair right at my part, and made sure to pull the braid tight enough to make it stay up there, and not slide down.

kelly-j, woah! Thanks for the heads up, but I really do think that stat is accurate. My hair seems to have a mind of its own, with inconsistent circumference measurements - everything from 3.5 to 5.5 inches depending on how close to wash day it is (and a few other factors). However, braids have always looked chunky, so I might update to iii. :flower:

Just browsing through my album now, I didn't realize I had no pic of my regular everyday english braid - will have to take care of that.
So for now, pics of some of my funky attemps :

3 english braids :
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2389&pictureid=49927
I occasionnaly do the same with english in the middle, rope and herringbone on each side - love it, but I'm not very patient with the herringbones so I don't do it often (have only done it twice, to be fair).

Split braid :
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2389&pictureid=59418
have occasionnaly done it with rope and herringbone after the split, too.

I sometimes do two side heidi type braids, and even 2 side braids, one being split, with rope and herringbone after the split. No pics yet, will try to take some next time I do it.

Sorry for the off-topic:
To insert a picture, you don't want the link to that page in your album, but to the image file itself. To find this, when you're looking at the picture in your album, right click on the image. You will get an option which says something similar to "Open image". Choose it, and you will be taken to a page which contains nothing but the image, with a slightly different URL in the address bar. This is the URL you should use to insert the picture.

The URL to your pic in the album is
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=4061&pictureid=68850 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=4061&pictureid=68850)

But to insert it in a thread you want to use
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4061&pictureid=68850 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4061&pictureid=68850)
You can copy this url into the box that pops up when you press the insert picture button.

It looks like it changes when you run out of arms reach from the back then when you i assume continue from the front is where you loose the flow. I often make i mess of it a this stage to don't worry. I find help with a mirror helps and it feels like your reversing the braiding then you've just got to restart the flow without it showing. I often cheat by putting a tie at the point i run out of arms reach form the back but that's only going to last so long :o and my layers quit there at the moment anyways which isn't so flattering to braid up.
Braid looks nice on you :flower:

Nah. Are you pulling one strand too tight maybe?? My husband has tried to help me braid before it they twist and twirl like that...only yours is nice looking. Mine looks like he crochetted it with a porchop bone when he's done.
Funny thing is, I braided it rather loosely because it makes the epic kink look more like a flip...

Thanks :flower:
This pretty much the point where it starts to kink, that's true. :agree: I can't figure out if it's my lack of braiding skills or it's where my former layers and taper start to take over the braid. I do change the manner in which I braid from english to dutch and do it in front of the mirror. I even started a thread seeking for a solution to my Flip-O'-Doom problem, but if something helped me we wouldn't be discussing it now

Somehow I ended up with at least 5 times as much hair as my mom, I'm trying to accept it, but it really does feel like too much when I can't fit it in a clip or when a wearing a ponytail hurts my neck. Or when it explodes in volume! :justy:

Yay! I managed to do my hair in a single plait! (that's "braid" to speakers of US English)!

I have layers, so doing a single plait (low down) doesn't work, because the tassle ends up having to be longer than the plait. So today I did one higher up, which had the effect of balancing out the length difference. I wish I could do it at my nape and have it look like that. It hurts having it in a high ponytail, and I have to take it down.

Please do not "quote" my picture. I might want to remove it later. Thank you! :)

3.5"? How interesting! (I'm 4" and my braid definitely doesn't look like that lol). Maybe her hair type allows it to be braided more loosely but appear chunky and airy instead of flat or lame. In any way it looks utterly amazing.

Yes, it is loose. It is about a 1c naturally, and goes to about 1b when combed and air drying throughout the day. I'll see if I can braid it tighter for a more accurate braid

Hey guys, I have some fun braids to show, nothing too interesting length wise but since my hair isn't very long yet (APL) I have to find other ways to amuse myself!

http://i48.tinypic.com/1r6v5s.jpg
I gave my sister a French braid that went around her head (her hair wasn't long enough to let the remaining tail be a headband over her bangs so I didn't take a picture of that).

http://i50.tinypic.com/a0fps5.jpg
And on a lesser serious note, this was inspired by someone's avatar (I can't remember whose but I am sure some of you know which one I am talking about!) Had to have my mom braid this for us, but she can't French braid so it's just an English braid. Wish our hair was longer but I love the color difference!

Just thought I'd share for fun :) I love looking at everyone else's beautiful braids!

Rachelily, I love the french braid/crown you gave your sister! I wish I had the dexterity to try something like that out on my own hair . . .

I experimented with a 4 strand braid today (I've only done them on others), and rather than turning out flat, I think I made a 3D one!!! Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera handy, but I promise soon to contribute my own braids (although by no means as thick or long as other posters).

I need to pull out my old American Girl Dolls that have long hair and mess around with those to learn new braids (like the 4 strand!)

Here's my first French braid in more than 10 years ... my mom taught me how to do this as a kid but my hair has been short for a while and I haven't bothered. I'm a little out of practice, but close! :)

Wow....another Na'vi!.......far out!!! So cool.....:D

And sorry its not all visible...but here tis....
It goes about 7 or 8 more inches that you cant see....

and after all these years I still cant really braid very well without binding it initially...:(

although once I do that I can braid it traditionally or in a rope...Im actually rather "Hair illiterate"..:o

Now I have little hair left this is how I wear it everyday:

PSI know I shouldn't wear it the same way everyday so I am going to have to try new braids.

I'm sorry, I just had to quote this photo to compliment your braid but mostly tell you that you have such a lovely shape! You can model, seriously .:)

Okay, here is my braid from forever ago (before I chopped my hair last March). I'm sure if I straighten my hair it will be this length now, probably more thicker!

I second this. I'd love to get my herringbone braids to look this smooth.
