Thanks Kizuna and Zesty! :)

...as I think my rose bun looks quite good, I'll say it works quite well at mid back length if you use 2 braids. :p

To you wrap them in the same or alternate directions?

I never knew the name of this bun. I was able to make on at mbl. This one is from about 5 months ago. I should try it again now to see how it looks on longer hair.

ingveld, that is beautiful. The variations in your color make it more interesting. I want to try it. I'm MBL, but thick, so maybe I could do it. It'll work with sticks, right?

Thank you :) I also have (slightly) thick hair, but with quite a bit of taper. It should work with a stick!

I wrapped them in the same direction, it felt most natural. I don't know what difference it makes though :)

Here's a braid I did last week. It's two dtuch braids and I tied them around each other as many times as I could and pinned the ends under. :)

I love your hair stick in this picture!

I have something kind of like this but yours seems like it has much more weight (as in thickness of the wood, not heavy) than mine. They both have a rounded top with sort of openwork carving on the inside, though.

Would you mind sharing where you got it?

I'm afraid I couldn't pull it off, though. Not enough thickness!

Thank you!! I got my hairstick from a market, but you can also get it at CrystalMood (http://www.crystalmood.com/carved-hair-fork-wood-hair-stick-mystery.html)! I'm very happy with it :)

And thank you for the compliment, I'm sure you could pull it off, with your length it would be really stunning!

Not as shiny as that hair! :p
But I'm scared of hair dye, so ribbon would be a good alternative.

Just a regular English braid today, since I'll be in the car for a few hours, on my way down south and I wanted something I could flip over my shoulder so it wouldn't be between me and the seat. :D I like it because there's no frizz (*cough* olive oil *cough*), and I managed to braid it down to the ends without the layers poking out everywhere (thanks to olive oil and some clever twisting). The ends are being weird, though. I just hope no one gets close enough to smell my hair. :p

Yeah, olive oil. :p It doesn't do anything for my hair (*sigh* I wanted solf and silky hair) but it definitely helps to tame down the flyaways. Usually my braids aren't so neat, but this one turned out so well I wanted to post it.

And yeah, that's really pretty Colourful -- what is that at the beginning? A sort of twist with strands added into it, or is it a braid?

thanks! I color my hair, it is a mousey brown. and having this much hair is sometimes a pain. it is nice, but with thick hair you need length to do updos. and length is something i lack at the moment. so i am so happy to be able to braid it like this.

I saw a pic online of an undercut so I parted her hair to see what it would look like with the top left alone and the bottom gone. I also took some circumference measurements. 4.0" all of her hair, 3.25" with the bottom excluded. Anyway, I ended up with this:

And here's the video tutorial for it: http://youtu.be/DOE5-2ZvcH4

Well that's seriously cool! Time well spent, I'm sure, given how it looks great after a night out.

Deep side parting with a french plait going across the front of my face and pinned back. Not sure what you call that! :o Considering how basic it is I've never been able to quite get it right before today! :)

(pic)

Hey, you got it right in the end. That's what matters most, and you did a superb job!

Ren Fest hair!

Apparently my henna application on my underlayer needs work LOL. Ah well, that is a project for another day.

(pics)

That's marvelous! I love how they incorporated the floral accent.

I tried a french style Rope Braid. I think I missed a couple of turns. :p

That almost looks more like a 4-strand box-braid to me, which morphs into a 3-strand at some point down the length. Either I'm right, or the angle and structure deceive me! The outcome looks fine however it went. :D

Time, or lack thereof, work, and a minor hair funk have put my braiding on the sidelines. I'm sure I'll get back to it soon enough. :p

Lovely! I always think french braid's that length look quite cute. There's something quite charming about them. :)

I'm also sporting a French braid today, which is very unlike me. I normally opt for a Dutch or English. But I find the change quite refreshing so perhaps I should mix things up a bit more! :D

I was messing around with my wife's hair last night :D

I saw a pic online of an undercut so I parted her hair to see what it would look like with the top left alone and the bottom gone. I also took some circumference measurements. 4.0" all of her hair, 3.25" with the bottom excluded. Anyway, I ended up with this:

Lostsoule77- Thanks. It was very hard. Next time I'm going to try sectioning my hair off differently tha she does in her video. I think it might work better for me.

Anyhoos... I went to a fair today that had braiding! EEEH! I was so excited when I saw the braiding sign. I ran right over, and I never run. I have yet to master a 5 strand braid on myself so I had her do this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/shasharon/0826121834-1.jpg?t=1346040930

Great looking braids you've all posted here again! I will just compliment everyone at once here since if I started quoting people, all the pictures since I last visited would be here... :)

I tried Siobhan's corset braids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpGnasJIoaQ&feature=g-u-u) and even though mine did again not end up as good as hers, I wanted to post a picture!
Though in my defense after making the dutch braids I went for a fast paced walk in the forest with the dogs and all the pines seemed to have it in for me since they kept wanting to grab my hair with their branches making the braids less pretty and more flyaway'y. I probably had pine needles in my hair thoughout the whole night...
So after the walk I put the ribbon in my hair. My ribbon was even thicker than hers and I only put it to every 2 loops. I wish I'd have had some proper color slightly longer but thinner ribbon so it would have looked better, but this was something I managed to grab from my sewing closet first. Especially the bottom goes a bit funny with the thick ribbon. Well anyway, atleast I got a compliment from a friend when I was out for dinner so I guess it wasn't all bad. :)

I can do the 5 strand pretty well in other people's hair now, but I'm still having trouble with my own! I can get a few bumps down then I always lose it, and I can't be bothered to try again straight after because it kills my arms! One day though, we'll both be able to do it on ourselves! =D

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9r2rldG2d1rfxckzo1_500.jpg

That looks really good! Did the pins (I assume you secured it with them) end up poking your head at all or did it sit comfortably?

Looped braids are interesting for me. I remember when my hair was short enough where I was okay with wearing a Victorian (the three braids looped via a flipped ponytail), but eventually it got long enough to where the loops just flopped around on my shoulders. I've debated on if at that point, doing a double loop would remedy the issue. (Although my hair is even longer at that point, but who knows?)

yeah, it was secured with bobby pins. They did sit comfortably, this style is indeed incredibly comfortable all around and i think very pretty for office and for formal settings.

maybe you could try Torrin's rope braids- where you make many rope braids and rope them all together. It takes out a LOT of length and makes a very thick and intricate braid. Although it would probably be too heavy to stay up with just bobby pins... maybe a flexi-8 or a slide would hold it secure!

Everybody's braids are looking gorgeous. I love the corset braids.

I'm gonna echo everyone's amazement at your fishtail braid Cowgirl16. I envy the braid, but not the arm ache after doing such a long fisthtail. Plus the time it must've taken. Whew. Just gorgeous!

You could always take rests by securing it with a long clip, like this: braid for 3 minutes, read a thread, braid for 5 minutes, get a cup of coffee, braid for 2 minutes, answer the phone.... you'd be done in an hour! :D

Haha, this is what I'd be doing! Really, I have very poor circulation and when I do anything with my hands, braiding, typing, writing, etc., my hands ache and I lose feeling after just a few mins. Its awful. Very frustrating. I SO wish someone else here could learn braiding. But its mostly guys here and they want no part of it.

I finally mustered up the oomph needed to do something new! Here are two from the last few days.

This is a simple bun with a layered braid I saw instructions for. There is a dutch braid that has been fluffed out, and a rope braid growing out of it. The rope is solidly a part of the dutch braid. It was alright as just a braid, but what's the harm in pinning it up?

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc11/mrgumball/PhotoJournal/MannequinCollage20120901.jpg

This is an amalgam of braids (and two knots) that seemed to turn out pretty well.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc11/mrgumball/PhotoJournal/MannequinCollage20120903.jpg

Of note, I originally hated (or really disliked) using hairpins and primarily stuck with bobby pins as the hairpins never held anything well. I've finally bought myself a pack of sturdier ones that were at least twice as long as the ones I've been using. What a marvelous difference they make! They'll definitely be in the mix with the bobbies from now in as they both have their uses.

Thankfully I have a hair tool kit I've put together that holds them quite nicely.

Ocelan, WOW WOW WOW!! That looks fun!!!

I finally learned how to do the 5-Strand braid. I still can't put it in my own hair, but my sister is happy to let me practice on hers while I master it. I was even able to french braid it!! This is my first attempt, so it is still messy.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/drummergrrl/IMG_0240.jpg

Her hair is at APL, but she has such a thick, blunt hemline. ::jealous:: Now she wants to grow hers longer so that the braid is "worth it" as she said. I told her that it is "worth it" anyway. :-)

GORGEOUS braids, everyone!!

What the hey I'll post this pic of my crown braid so you guys can laugh at my little deformed ear LOL!

Flyaway city with herringbone pigtails (it looks horrid)

Four side braids brought around to back and braided together

I love them all! Especially your ear!

My take on Siobhan's corset braids that I used at Ren Fest

Kinda uneven but my arms got tired lol

Very pretty!

Great looking braids you've all posted here again! I will just compliment everyone at once here since if I started quoting people, all the pictures since I last visited would be here...

I tried Siobhan's corset braids and even though mine did again not end up as good as hers, I wanted to post a picture!

Wonderful, Ocelan! I haven't attempted this yet, but it looks quite beautiful on your hair. I love the ribbon choice!

She had to turn it into a 3 strander at the end because of my darn layers. I'm in love with it. I never want to take it out. I had her put a little blue flower in.

That turned out so pretty!

Ren Fest hair!

Apparently my henna application on my underlayer needs work LOL. Ah well, that is a project for another day.

I don't even know how they manage to get these braids to look so neat. Next time one comes to my area, I must investigate! This braid is stunning on you, dear!

I think I'm beginning to suffer from split goal length personality or something. I'm around tailbone now, maybe a bit past, and with quite thick hair I'm actually beginning to feel that it's long enough, when it's down or in a bun (head-eating buns!). However, I want a MUCH longer and thicker braid! Damnit.

(Every time I see braids on mannequins, I wish my haircut was as even as theirs.)

It's basically a dutch braid, where before you do a crossover of a strand (or in a dutch braid a crossunder) you section out just a little bit of hair and leave it hanging. Since that leaves extra hair sections on each "bump" all the way down, you can then use that for rope braiding once you finish the dutch braid. Bun at your leisure!

Well, nothing new to see from me - I wear a Dutch braid pretty much every other day, and sometimes I take a picture of it. Here is my latest, after a day or so of wear:

The end of my tassel reaches BSL now, but it's SO short. I can't imagine my braid ever getting to waist length, but it would be awesome. I think I will be happy then. ;)

Mine is grossly uneven because it was my very first time trying this and I didn't use a mirror. I'll be using a mirror next time. :) Oh, and my ribbon ran too short so my tail's too long. To the fabric store! Away!

I have two to contribute.
First from this winter, after a big trim. My regular half-french braid:

Just a regular, off center, English braid. I had my hair in a half up because it was my first wedding anniversary and wanted my hair down. The garden we went to was too windy though so I braided it. I guess braiding my hair in a windy, public park while I was walking makes me do it off center. Other than that, I think it came out pretty good for that situation. :)

I tried the layered triple french and... it ended up bumpy and messy-looking. :p So I just did a normal English braid and when I took a picture I realised... my braid actually looks decently long from the back.
http://i49.tinypic.com/106iukg.jpg
Then I bunned it because I try to wear my hair up... even though I like it best down. Oh, and because I don't like my braids because of my layers. ^^
Also because I like the fork.

Also, this was just me being excited and having to try it IMMEDIATELY. Patience and practice would make for an exceptionally beautiful braid, I think.

:thud: Where do I start? That is a simply perfect fishtail! Actually all the braids are great! You've got some talent! How did you feel about your five-strand attempt? I thought it looked spot-on.

theemeraldskull, I used this one http://youtu.be/DOE5-2ZvcH4 Good luck, don't forget to post your results;)
Gumball, thank you so much:D I was so happy to be able to do the 5 strand braid! I didn't think I could manage it, but as soon as I figured out how to hold the strands it wasn't that difficult:)

MyKing'sQueen, I'm totally envious of how neat your French fishtail is, especially at the top! Mine always gets droopy. *g* And Henrietta, I love your rope braid!

Yesterday I decided to try to start my English braid in a different way, and really liked the result - and then it struck me that this must be Dianyla's technique (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=23652)! I never understood quite how that was supposed to work, for some reason, but now I never want to do an English braid in the old way again. I love how high up it starts.

Gumball can you share the instructions for the second do as well? Especially that braid in the middle on the crown? Both styles were as beautiful as always. You always out do yourself.

Alvrodul that looks so cool and pretty!

DarkCurls Lovely braid! The bun looks great & I like that fork too.

I have to say I think this is my favorite thread. :D

Cue the hopefully not terrible instructions!

Let's see... Ultimately you have 2 knots (they're basically regular "starting to tie your shoe" knots but not pulled tight). The left one was the first knot chain done, and the one on the right had one side loop through its companion from the original knot before I knotted it to force it to weave into the other one. That chain went back and was held in place by a ponytail.

There were lace braids on either side, made to have that lovely drape effect as they were brought over to cross the center. I ponytailed the rest of the hair, securing the knots even more, and wrapped the lace braids' lengths around it. (Wrapped pony, anyone?)

The length of the ponytail was split into four sections, each of them becoming a 3-strand braid. It just so happens the first two braids in this 'do were smaller than the others. I fluffed out one side of each braid and bunned them, pinning them in place to hide the hairtie. The other two braids, which happened to be bigger, I made loops of, tucking the ends up and pinning everything in place.

Here was something from the other night to occupy some free time:

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc11/mrgumball/PhotoJournal/MannequinCollage2012-09-11.jpg

Mostly I wanted to try the idea you see on the right side of the head, where the two lace braids are from the same side, but hair is added to the opposite side. I just wanted to see how that looked, so I made some sort of style to go along with the it for the rest of the hair.

I think it could have been better, but by that time I wasn't in the mood to undo everything.

Gorgeous. Your color too. Can I just ask what you use to secure your braid? I'm always using a huge (red satin, I always find the red satin one first) scrunchie, and it looks ridiculous with my type i hair. :p

bunzfan, thank you! Doing it this way does seem to make it look thicker at the top, for some reason.

melusine963, I can tell you that it didn't look half as neat after a few hours, heh. My braids always get insanely fuzzy! But thank you. :D

Krystall, it's one of those tiny, clear silicone bands! Like these, I think (http://www.amazon.com/Rickycare-No-Slip-Silicone-Black-Clear-Ounce/dp/B005G1Y3JM). A red satin scrunchie sounds like the more hair friendly option, though. ;) Thank you!

That french fishtail floored me. It's gorgeous! I also dig the faux-11 braid, too. As long as it looks good, who cares how you get there? :D Marvelous! Your mom's braid looks fantastic, too!

So when are you coming down here to tame my unruly hair? :silly:

Thank you so much! Haha. That's what I think....though I think it could LOOK better, too. Anytime; I need all the practice I can get!

gthlvrmx, I totally sympathise with your friend, heh. I've never thought of my hair as thick! (7 cm circumference at the top of my head.) I'm just lucky in that I don't have too much taper. :)

bunzfan, that looks great! It seems to be a really good way to avoid tangles and frizz at the neck, too.

And yeah, Gumball's unofficial fan club is a large one, I think. *g*

I tried the Faux French braid again which Torrin paige did a tutorial on which is basically the same as the dianyla braid you just bring the sides back so your parting stays intact . I prefer this as i have a parting, tutorial here http://youtu.be/2kOyGD_KOoA
Looks nice but fuzzy after wearing it all day.

Deep side part to nape. Main side done in a french fishtail, small side done in a dutch braid. Fishtail then turned and pinned across the top like a maiden braid. Where the fishtail ended the dutch braid was coiled and pinned.
