View Full Version : Buns that don't lie flat on the head?

I can make cinnamon buns and its variations, like the rose bun. I also know a couple of hairstick styles.
But what I'd like to learn is some bobbypinned buns that stick out instead of lying flat on the head. Thought this was the right place to ask for some guidelines or advice!

I'm thinking of something like these hairstyles. I can tell there's some braiding going on, but I'm at a loss otherwise. Is it possible that hairpieces or something were used, or is it just a matter of arranging hair?

I think a sock bun would make those buns exactly!

If my hair was universally thick, without a taper, my buns would be pretty tall, I think. However, I have layers so the middle part of my cinnabuns stick out pretty far, but the coils don't. What are those hairstyles from?

No advice but I saw that movie recently and I LOVED it :D

It could be pulled off with VERY thick hair or a mini sock bun with a braid around it.

Oh- it's sooo pretty! I whished I could do something like this in my hair. I would wear it everyday! I'll follow this thread carefully.
Where do the pictures come from? Looks like a movie. Probably 1840 or so? If they're from the same person, I would say that there's a hairpiece in the third picture, because the bun is way bigger than on the other ones, more than would explain the absence of a braid around the ears IMO. Maybe a sockbun, with a braid around?
Personnally, I have the problem that cinnabuns and braided buns don't stay flat on my head, but that's my heavily tapered hair...

Instead of wrapping a cinnamon fashion (going round the outside) send the second wrap around under the first and the bun starts to stick out a little. Torrin explains it better in the beginning of her infinity/figure 8 bun video

Ok, I tried something: http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab339/celeluwhen/Photo251.jpg
These partings are ugly... I'll make them neat another time.
So I parted my hair in the middle, then again right behind each ear. I made a sock bun with the back part and braided the remaining of the ponytail, pinning it around. I braided the two side parts, and pinned them around the bun each in its direction. I hope it's clear...

I like this one. But I don't like hair pieces and whatnot. Looks like the hair would have to be at least classic length to make something like that.

Wow you guys! I knew I came to the right place. :grnbiggri Sock buns kinda put me off for some reason, but if this can be done with them I'm inclined to try them out.

celelu, that looks pretty good! You nailed it! I'd like to wear 19th century hairstyles too, but am afraid of people making fun of me. I wanted to ask some questions about how you did it, but then typed "sock bun" into youtube and what do you know! This came out as the first result (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8iZqobYaUk). That's probably the same technique you used, right?

Keildra, that's what my first failed attempts at a cinnabun looked like! I pulled way too hard. How great that even what one percieves to be a failure can be tweaked into something nice.

The pictures are from The Young Victoria (2009). I've seen it twice and bawled both times, I just love it! It won Best Costume at this year's Oscars.

That's the supposed hair length (though I'm well aware movie hair is completely unrealistic)

I think those hair styles are GORGEOUS! And you did a really good job recreating them :)

That was an interesting video, i shall do that someday! I don't think the straightning was necessary though. And lovely pictures. :)

I never get my buns to lie flat on the head! I was already starting to wonder what I was doing wrong...

I like sock buns a lot because i could do them with just a bob cut. :D

The thing that bothers me a little about the sock bun idea is that it leaves a hole in the middle of the bun. I don't know, that hole really bothers me for some reason.

I use to put some little flowers on the hole and some around the bun. :D

You read my mind! I was just thinking about some little flowers I've got... and remembered this thread and sock buns! :grnbiggri

Yes! I used this technique exactly, but her hair is 4x thicker than mine, with the same lenght... What a mane!

Yes, I think it's unrealistic! I suppose the braid couldn't wrap the bun totally and the small braids wouldn't reach it well, but it's been ages since I've had layers, and thick hair at BSL has never been my reality, so I can't really tell!

It depends on the size of the hole in the sock you use. Mine is pretty small, so the hole doesn't appear much. Anyway, if you look carefully at the third picture, you will see that there's something with black marbles, that probably crosses behind the bun and distracts attention from the back?

My hair actually looks kinda like that, layers included. So I'll have to wait a bit more to be able to do it just right. But it's still an inspiration!

Oh yes, it's a decoration.
