I found a picture of a lovely hairstyle that I'd like to recreate. It reminds me of a style that a woman from Republican Rome or Hellenistic Greece would wear. If anyone has any ideas of how to recreate it or knows a similar style previously posted, please let me know.

Picture from Anthropolgie's Facebook page.

Welp, I couldn't see the picture when I previewed my post, so here is a link to it on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32349280@N03/4465799956/.

I think that is based on this photo (http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt147/fundevogel/phpsvd8dm.jpg). How lame is it that I had it saved on my computer?

You know, you are entirely correct. So I'm guessing the only thing I will need is a TEAM OF PROFESSIONAL HAIR STYLISTS & PHOTOGRAPHERS to achieve this look? :D

I don't think it's lame...but then again, I have a ridiculous amount of pictures from Anthropologie saved on my 'puter.

Does anyone have any suggestions for more achievable looks similar to this one? I think the things I like most about it are that it is reminiscent of ancient styles & it looks kind of effortless & careless while remaining elegant.

I guess if you don't mind straightening, back combing, tight bungy grips and bobby pins, the video link by Curlylocks85 could be quite helpful.

I watched the video & it seemed to be a lot more trouble that it's worth. It looks like my hair would be one giant snarl once I took it out, & I don't think it looks as nice as the silhouette picture. I'll have to do use some google-fu to see if I can find anything re: historical hairstyles from B.C.

I can't wear my hair up that high because it pulls something fierce. However, if it was shorter I might manage it, maybe. At least he didn't back comb it with a comb.

okay first you need a really tall, skinny Tupperware thingy you place it on your head and wrap your hair around it and curl the excess. I think that would achieve the same look. I've heard of really tall beehives done this way maybe it will work

You would probably have to do a lot of teasing to get that stiff shape her do has.

The OP reminds me of one of these... the first one on the left, and the 4th along are very much the same shape.

It looks like a cone bun , covered in curls that are pinned.

Iv never tried this out but heres how I would do it:

Gather the hair back into a pony tail in the position you want it to stick out. Take the top of the pony and put to the side and work on the major part underneath. Back comb and then twist into a cone, pin and smother in hairspray. Taking whats left devide into small bits and curl up and pin to the cone.

It also looks a bit like the old greek/phenician hair styles that appear a lot on pottery and the line.

I think I would try sculpting a big hunk of Styrofoam to make an "insert". You could pin directly into it. lolol It's light and easily shapable.

I am always thinking to do this around Halloween but now, that I am trying to be so careful with my hair. . .and LOVE historical looking hairstyles, I might try this. I would NOT do any sort of backcombing, not even a little bit.

This reminds me a lot of the picture of Dianyla's hair in a cinnabun (it's in her public album). Obviously growing floor-length hair would take a while(!), but isn't there a style called something like the vortex bun which is essentially a many-stranded cinnabun? It looks very similar to this, except the bun is almost flat against the head (I remember that the member who invented it used to wear it for ballet dancing) but possibly you could adapt it by pinning the coils over each other somehow?

Yep, found it - the member is CinnamonCurls and she did a youtube video showing the style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSf1vv8oB6g

How about using a huge hair-rat as the base?

At most craft stores they already have styrofoam in the shape of cones, which would be awesome because you could stick pins through and such to hold the hair... I would love to do this style too. It would look so cool with a few small and medium braids. Good thing I don't have anything to do this weekend! :D

I probably should have mentioned in the OP that I can't backcomb. I used to do it occasionally to get a gorgeous, full-head-of-hair look, but the snarls & tangles take forever to get out & I break a lot of hair in the process. It's even worse if I spray it full of hairspray--you should hear the awful words that fall from my rosebud lips--they would curl your hair! It's just not worth it for me anymore.

gmdiaz & amoulixes: A styrofoam cone is genius! I think I still have some from a flower arranging project that I should dig out & try. I've also been working on a rat for the past few weeks as well, but I don't think it's big enough yet joiekimochi.

If anyone tries this style any time soon (or any other similar historical styles, like the ones Chibbylick posted above, please please PLEASE post pictures! I really want to see how they would look on a real person! Especially if you have pretty hairtoys to put in them.

I totally agree!.. and if your hair isn't long enough to do the pretzel bun you could always put a sock around your pony (like if you were to do a sock bun) to get the volume and pin the curls over it!!!
