Hi,
A friend of mine is going to a ball tomorrow night and since she is more or less hair-illiterate she asked my help to do something with her hair which is shoulder-length, layered and with a "side fringe". While I can easily fix my own hair into a formal updo I have never had layered hair that short or thin (probably i) and so is at a slight loss... Her hair is straight but has a bit of shape naturally.

Any ideas for an updo? Preferably it will be a little bit funky rather than über formal since the ball is for a student theatre which is known to be slightly quirky.

with hope of help,
ikn

I would try grabbing random bits, twisting them, and then pinning them back. My friend does this, with a bunch of twists all around her head, and it looks really good. She leaves the side bangs down. Her hair is a bit wurly, so it has both enough texture for the clips to stay in and enough volume to look put together.

I will try to find pictures...

Kind of like the bottom one on this site. Although the top one may work better if her hair is heavy/longish . A pretty flower pinned in to match her dress would look nice, too!

Maybe a 1940's type of style? It would work quite well with her length and layers.

I would say pull back small sections in almost a headband fashion on the top and then flip out the layers or.. Torrin (one of my favs to watch on you tube) has a great tutorial that would work for that length hair! UP-DO LINK (http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige#p/u/30/-jbCEzFPKEs) She has much much much longer hair but it would be perfect for your friend!:D

I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LD-HoEfPiE) is a very cute up-do, perfect for layered hair, and perfect for spring if that has arrived where you live. :D

Under the "articles" section of the site, there's a grean summer flower bun tutorial that I love, and i have shoulder length hair. It can be done to look very formal or very messy. Basically you make a ponytail, grab small sections of hair, curls around your fingers, and pin down.
