I would assume conditioner is the gentlest.

I've never tried shampoo bars, so I am not the best person to answer this question as I can't do a comparison, but I do CO wash and I've found it to be very gentle.

I suppose it depends on the ingredients of the shampoo bars. Some might contain SLS and harsh things like that.

I only use a conditioner bar ( Lush- Jungle Bar) . I'd assume that the conditioner doesn't really strip anything out of your hair.

Hard to say. Depends on how you use it. If you have to vigorously scrub your scalp, and physically manipulate your hair a lot while wet to get CO to work, but barely have to suds up to get clean hair with a shampoo bar, the shampoo bare would be better. Some people would find the opposite to be true.
