Did I invent a new (variation of a) bun?


How I did it:
I made a ponytail first and fastened it with a hair band.
Then I separated the ponytail in 6 equal-sized strands and made each strand into a double-looped knot and pinned in place (I wrapped my hair around the base of each knot twice before making the second loop, to use up the length). It can be done with 5 knots too.
To finish, I rearranged the loops a bit to form a better circle.

I have been doing this bun since I my hair was at BSL (now it's nearly waist).
If I did invent this, I would like to call it the flower bun :)

Step 1: hold strand between 2 fingers and thumb of left hand
Step 2: lift strand (tail points up) with right hand and bring it over the 2 fingers (forming a loop)
Step 3 & 4: bring the tail to the left and rotate counterclockwise for 270°. The tail is now to the right of the loop. For longer hair: make another full wrap in after this (270° + 360°). The tail will end up at the right again.
Step 5: separate the 2 fingers inside the loop and put the tail between them.
Step 6: pull tail partly through the first loop. You have now made your second loop.
Step 7: pin in place with U-shaped pins

Okay, after reading it over a couple more times...

I think what you did was to make a small loop around your fingers, twist the hair twice around the base of the loop, pin, then make another loop, twist the hair at the base, pin.... rinse, repeat.

Is that right or am I completely off? :o

It looks similar to a variation of a beehive-inspired bun I wore once for a show. But nicer, because it's not so beehive-y. I do love the look, though. :blossom:

I've tried to clarify the instructions, but if you still have questions, just ask. It always sounds logical in my head, but that's because I already know how to do it :rolleyes: Head to keyboard translation is a bit difficult.
I use simple hairpins (Amish-like) to pin the knots in place.

The double wrap is meant for people with hair that will leave a very long tail after the knot is finished. I will go and add that too.

ok, first off, these are not the best pics but it's a camera phone and it's all I got.

I have ii hair, so I had to accomodate the amount of times I wrapped: loop, wrap, wrap, wrap, loop, wrap, wrap, pin.

I did a pony tail, and seperated it into 3 strands and I held them with claws to keep them seperated (because I want 6 equal parts) then with whatever strand I was working with, I just divided it into two. (it looks like I'm wearing a bra, but it's a spagetti strap shirt LOL)

It doesn't look exactly like Isilya's but I am darn proud of myself and my clumsy fingers for doing this. It held pretty well, and like Isilya said, it doesn't take long. It was under 15 minutes for me. While too long to wear it to work, for a weekend this is doable.

I have tried it again.. unfortunately it all sags out after mere minutes with u pins. I have then tried it with claw clamps, which resulted in another scare crow updo.

My hair is just way too slippery for this sort of bun.

The second problem is that my hair is uncredibly slippery! Coul have been only these days, but I need to be sure with this style, especially on the day of the wedding!
The third problem is: what pins are you using? I tried amish pins, but they did't hold. And the "normal" pins are too tight so it hurt.:confused:
The fourth problem was when working with the second (or third) hair strand, I destroyed the first loops...
I know, I'm not good at styling my hair... I manage a cinnamon bun, a few hairstick styles and a chinese bun. But this one seems out of reach for me now...:boohoo:
I was thinking of using a volume mousse to reduce the slippiness (however it's really called) or ever spray the individual strands with hair spray. I did not try it yesterday night, though.

First of all, I love the Shrek quote :D

Second, there are no secret tricks to do this style. As far as I know, you should be able to this after some practice. Don't give up yet :)

Now, for your problems/questions:

I think problems 1 and 2 can be solved if you do use mousse/gel/hairspray. It will give you hair better hold and it will keep the shorter hairs in place. Many people here avoid them because they can be drying, but it won't damage your hair if you use it once or twice.

I used Amish-like pins, so I don't know much about other types. I'm hoping another member will chime in to give you advice on this. The only thing I can think of, is trying to 'overbend' the normal pins a bit (pulling the 'legs' apart), so the opening between the 2 sides will be larger and it won't pull as much.

For the placing of the loops, I think this can be solved with practice. If you have 2 mirrors, you can try to place them in a way that allows you to see the back of your head while you're styling it. You'll be able to position the loops better that way.

I use 5mm hairbands. I've never noticed any problems with pinning. Do you try to stick the pins 'through' the elastic? In that case, try to get them behind the elastic (between the hairband and your head).

Ooooh, that explanation did it for me. I was a bit unclear about the bit where you pull the second loop through the first. But now I get it.

Wow, I like this a lot. I might be able to adapt a similar style on my own hair soon if not now. My hair's a bit on the short side but I'm thinking I might be able to take smaller sections of hair and make smaller loops to compensate. I do have a crochet hook to assist me. Hmmmmmmm . . .

However, using mirrors only confuses me more. I'm one of those people who cannot switch the brain to think in th mirror ;-)
I will give the style another try, this time with mousse or even spray to make my hair less slippery. I will also try to put the pins under the elastic, as you said. That could have been part of the problem, because the pins stayed open...
I tried another of your styles I like very much - the woven bun. It seemed easier to do for me. However, I think I was too distracted and messed the under/over part somewhere, 'cause I ended with a very, uhm, unsymetrical thing ;-)
OK, I keep practicing. Otherwise, I will have to make a last minute appointment with my hairdresser for an updo or stick to the chinese bun ;-)
