My hair seems to hate Aloe - in products, smt, everything I've tried. Is anyone else's hair this way? What do you do/use?

I’m allergic to it (Swollen, red, painful rash) and for some reason my hair absolutely hate it as well, so I simply avoid it

My hair hates aloe, its gets all grabby and tangled and just icky when I try and use it. I make my SMTs with conditioner, honey and evoo or coconut oil.
I never tried using aloe as a leave in.
On the plus side I learned my face absolutely LOVES aloe so I have a use for the big bottle I have.

yeah, mine gets frizzy and rough. I've made my smts with flaxseed gel with great results

Yep.
I replace aloe with oil in "SMTs" too. Or did. Haven't done one in quite some time.

Me Me Me!!!
I get crunchy terrible brittle-ness from aloe.
I, like GlassEyes, replace aloe with oil in SMTs (when I can be bothered).

I too get crunchy, straw like with aloe alone on my hair. I always thought it was weird that it was meant to be 'moisturizing' when all it seemed to do was dry my hair out. I try to avoid anything that has aloe high in the ingredients list too.
I love it for my skin though. It's a must have for summer for after being in the sun. It is a life saver for sun burn. I don't mind it as a shaving 'cream' too for my legs - prevents me from getting those annoying shaver burn bumps as my skin is sensitive.

I think aloe is one of those things that pulls moisture toward dryness. So if your hair is well moisturized and the environment is dry, it will pull the moisture from your hair.
I don't have to worry about that around here as I live in a wet climate. Except for maybe 2 months out of the year, there's always plenty of environmental moisture to be had.

My hair also becomes crunchy and gunky if I use aloe. I use fenugreek masks instead as my scalp doesn't like conditioner on it either.

oh yeah, my hair dislikes aloe vera gel *intensely.* I think it's the humectant properties and my dry climate...

I also live in a very wet climate, and have no problems with other humectant-type things.

I had big problems and poor results with aloe gel, until I switched to an organic brand of it, which is much more liquidy (almost more like aloe juice than gel), and now it works really nicely!
Before, it would make my skin red and irritated, and was a disaster in my hair. I think it must have had some additive(s) in it, rather than just pure aloe vera. I think the one I have now has only aloe vera and citric acid in it, as a natural preservative.

which is probably why I too don't have much luck with it either.

I tried the Jason brand, and another kind that's for internal use that's more of a juice. I figured that kind would work nicely for sure, but nope! It's nice on my skin though:)

I just tried a version of SMT, my friend gave me some fresh aloe pieces so I mixed a few drops of almond oil, with aloe vera slime :p and some conditioner and left it on for about an hour. I was expecting my hair to dry out a little but it actually reacted really nicely, it feels so soft! I hope the effect continues...have any of you tried with real, fresh aloe?

I can't use it in my hair either and of course bought the biggest industrial size they sell...So, not wanting to waste my money, I read the other uses for it. Come to find out; this is a good moisturizer and it works well with acne. So, that's what I use it for and it works fantastic for that. My skin has been much clearer after adding this to my facial moisturizing routine. I think that combined with liquid Vitamin E has worked wonders.
I wish SMT worked for me, because I could use all the moisture I can get!

I have acne and v. oily skin and aloe has been a fantastic moisturizer. My skin has been clearer since I started using aloe so maybe that is one of the reasons...cool.
All I know is that aloe seems to be the perfect light weight moisturizer.

Yep, I'm pretty sure it's the aloe that keeps ruining my SMTs. And yet I keep using the aloe...Not smart, I guess. It could be the aloe gel I'm using. It turns into these little white balls and then refuses to come out of my hair. Hair then turns into a sticky, gunky mess.

Yeah, the little white bits are what I got with the previous kind I used. If you can find it, try Lily of the Desert - if you want to try it again, that is.

My hair did not like aloe vera gel! It just went all heavy and horrible and definitely didn't look as if I'd just washed it. I am in a dry climate, so maybe that's why then..

Aloe vera does contain protein so if your hair is protein-sensitive, that could be why you are experience dryness and crunchy ends.

Aloe turns my hair into a tangly disaster. I tried it as part of a mix in my mister bottle and it just didn't work out. It's in my most recent batch of SMT, but it doesn't seem to do any damage there. I'm guessing that's got a lot to do with the ratio of aloe to conditioner and honey. There's a lot more of those two than aloe. I won't be including it in my next batch though. I'll probably try adding some oil instead.

That even stranger then, my hair loves protein.

My hair doesn't seem to care about protein either. Some of my conditioner has it, some doesn't, my hair is exactly the same with both.
There are very few things my hair absolutely hates, so far it seems to be aloe and the cone Cyclopentasiloxane (make my hair feel like barbie doll hair)
