I am a Civil War reenactor, and a new one at that. I know a few hair-do's that are period correct and authentic, but would love to know more. :D
If anyone has any they would like to share please do!

From the websites I've seen, it looks like straight hair, parted in the center, and slicked back into a bun. With or without a hat or snood. Hope you have fun!

A lot will depend on the social class of your character, as well as the setting you are acting out. Different for a formal ball than for a nurse working at the battlefield. Doing your back hair in a bun, then smoothing your front hair from a center part down and over your ears and then back into the bun would probably do fine for an "everyday" style.

Have you seen this site. It has some basics. I agree it depends on what you are doing/who you are. I just put it back into a low bun. I try to do side rolls (wide faces were in and all), but I'm not very good at them. Rats are your friend in almost any style, so if you don't have any, get some.

Jeni, your link has one too many https in it - this way (http://www.gothampatterns.com/hair.html)you can get to the site ;)

Also, you can check out this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=1364) here, where the subject was already discussed.

I hope you find something you like! :)

No, you're not - the link icon is ;) When you click on the chain link button, there is already an "http://" in there. It's easy to overlook it, and when you post your link - boom, you suddenly have two, and nothing's working the way it should :)

La Serenissima, Welcome to the board, and to the wonderful world of Civil War reenacting. I am a reenactor also.

Actually for day to day, under my bonnets and such I wear my hair in a center parted low bun sometimes slicked sometimes with "puffed out" sides. This was a very traditional hair style of the era worn by many classes of women. This is also a very functional style.

A bun can be dressed up with flowers and hair jewelry, decorated snoods, etc. Hair would traditionally only be worn in loose styles for formal occassions.

Have you visited the Fanny and Vera site yet? Its a great resource for reenactors just getting their feet wet in the field. http://www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/newcivilians/womenswear/hairstyles.htm

We should hook up and talk reenacting sometime. See if we will be at any of the same events this year.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Me too!
I just finally got involved last year. I just do the general center part (no side parts if you hadn't picked up on that yet) with ears covered and a cinnamon bun in back.
