Wrapped ponytail - how to get the wrapped hair to stick?

Seeing another very beautiful doubled-up then wrapped ponytail in the album section just now reminded me that I meant to ask: Just how on earth do you guys manage to get the strands / ends of hair used for wrapping around the base of the ponytail to stay in place. I've tried to create that style numerous times, but I never can get the wrapped part to stay in place for any length of time. How do you do it? What kind of tool do you use? For me, u-shaped pins are reasonably good at catching the ends and tying them in but have no staying / holding power whatsoever if just pushed under the elastic. Bobby pins on the other hand, usually don't manage to catch enough hair and the hairs seem to be able to pull themselves loose, so I have to insert them quite far from the end of the strand to work at all, leaving bits poking out. Plus again, no real holding power.

I would really love to get this style to work, so do you have any tips for me (the "hair instructions for dummies" version preferably...)?

I use the U shaped pins. I tuck the ends under, grab some edge updo hair (so not the ends!) that lays over it and apply that as a hairstick. Works like a charm, and my hair is terribly unbelievably slippery ;)

So don't use the pins to grab the ends hair, rather take some (say) bun hair and sort of clamp them under the bun hair.

I used the small u-shaped pins for this purpose. Three of them worked best, inserted like a "Y", but I needed to take a bit more hair to wrap around the base of the ponytail... like a mini-cinnamon bun. If the strand was too thin it did not hold well, either. And no chance with fresh hair, some greasiness is absolutely needed if you have slippery hair.

Sometimes I'll use pins or sometimes I bust out a little toy I have that helps to pull the ends down through the wrap and hair tie. That way the hair wraps around a few times then stays there as if it's tied along with the rest of the hair. Works like a charm. I hope it can work for you!

The only time I succeed is when I do it while hair is damp. I use bobby pins.

Agreed. Using a Topsy Tail (http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/topsy_tail.html) or similar item to pull the hair back through the base after wrapping a couple of times works like a charm and you don't have all the hair pins to mess with.

Using a Topsy Tail (http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/topsy_tail.html) or similar item to pull the hair back through the base after wrapping a couple of times works like a charm and you don't have all the hair pins to mess with.

A crochet hook works quite nicely, too.

Thanks for all those brilliant instructions! I knew there had to be a trick to it (or several).

I'll give the y-formation of u-shaped pins a try first, but I'll be on the look out for a mini-topsy-tail (or suitable crotchet hook).

I couldn't remember the proper name for this style, so this was my pathetic attempt at a succinct description. What I mean is when you don't pull the ponytail all the way through on the last turn of the elastic, but leave it to form a loop instead with the ends hanging out a bit that are then wrapped around the base of the ponytail. I'll try to track down a picture tomorrow, but it may be a little tricky since I spend quite some time this morning (public holiday over here) browsing the photo albums and hair style picture threads... :cool:

I found one - not the one I saw this morning, but it should give you an idea of the style I'm referring to, only in this case the wrapped bits are held be a bine clip (I hope it's ok if I copy this picture out of sapphireo's hairtoy challenge photo album):

I have two such pictures in my hairtoy challenge album in my sig. :) Both held with hair forks. They were OK if you're not too active. Otherwise you better use some products to make your hair stick together. Never tried pins.

k_hepburn Ah, now I see. And I was thinking of Sapphire-O's do with the Bine, just wasn't sure.
Another thing to remember is that while S-O's do looks elegant and tidy, the laying/rubbing against the clothes will make single hairs loose over the day, moreso than with a braid.

In this photo I followed Madeleine's chignon instructions in the archives, including the tiny sparkly claw clip to hold the ends of the wrapped hair. The tanzanite clip matches my hair and you cannot see it very well.

I have this (http://www.scunci.com/product_detail.aspx?gid=11&pid=30&lp=3) - a ponywrap thingie from Scunci. It works pretty well, but only with a not-too-thick lock of hair to wrap. It works similar to a crochet hook, but is very hair-friendly.
