View Full Version : Braid-A-Day Challenge!

Forgive me if I'm usurping someone else's idea here, I searched and didn't find this anywhere...

At any rate, I have a new challenge! I joined the 'wear your hair down' challenge, and realized that although braids count as down for that, I really won't be wearing my hair loose very often until it's warm enough that I don't need a coat.

SO, due to that and the fact that braids seem to count either way-- up or down (mostly down though, I know)-- depending on how you feel like characterizing them, my challenge is to wear your hair in some kind of braid every day! As many different ones as you can think of or are capable of!

All braids go, unless they are an updo... so basically anything that doesn't involve the length of your hair bunned-up. I'm not sure whether we should 'count' crown braids or not, so input is welcome... and if you come up with a new braid or a cool twist on an old one, post it!

Hmm, what am I forgetting...?

Oh! I'm in until the cold goes away here, and will probably be in every winter... I'll be on braid-sabbatical during the warmer months. ;) Anyone else?

ETA--> I remembered something else! Feel free to post pics as you please during your challenge... Braid photos are awesome! I'll post mine for tonight/tomorrow soon if I can get DF to take its picture for me...

If the point is to learn how to do new braids, then yes, crown braids (and tucked braids too) should count. If the point is to wear one's hair down but not-quite-down, then they shouldn't. Tucked braids are a bit of a gray area. My hair is long enough that the loop ends up being a bit longer than APL. Is that up or down?

Personally, I think that wearing a different braid (or variation-- a French braid in a different direction would count for another day) every day would be a very fun challenge. That doesn't seem to be what you're after here though. :)

As far as the warmer months-- a braid that comes off your head high is still pretty cool. A mid-height English or a very high French...

Well since i always wear my hair in a braid unless i'm at work, (i either wear a bun or pull the braid up and secure it with a scruncy or a claw clip.) i join. not sure i can learn to do new braids, can't even manage a french braid and that is easy. but i'm in on a braid a day.

Is the point to wear hair down or just to use more braids? I want to add braids to updos. I would love to work on accent braids and lace braids to spruce up some boring buns.

Heh... just remembered that I started this thread and never replied... Sorry for the resurrect, but I feel remiss.

Upon further consideration, for the purposes of this challenge, I have decided to mean styles that have a braid as a main component. So, braided buns count, heidi/crown braids count, regular braids hanging down, etc.

Now, off to find my braid photos!

That is awesome. It must eat up so much length

Thanks, Paranda Belle. By the time I finish braiding each of the braids the length has shrunk to about waist. I wanted to double it over, so just tucked in the rest under the sequined slide.

What a great challenge. I am not a bun person and really prefer braids. I will start tomorrow, since my hair is freshly washed. But here is my contribution from few days ago http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6273&pictureid=93834

I'm tempted to join, this seems like a fun challenge...I really like braids and I'd like to learn to do more styles and better at that. My immediate challenge is to learn to do the dutch braid so that it actually starts as close to my hairline as I can make it, instead of somewhere near the crown.
I'm lazy though, some days it's so much easier to make a messy bun. But I'll try my best, I'm in for now :)

Well i have attempted a lace braid, albeit a messy one I am quite proud of it! and its very comfortable and only took 4 bobby pins!

I braid my hair almost everyday already, so I'm in.
Most days, I wear ,y trusty side braid or diagonal dutch(or french). Almost always on the right side 'cause I fence lefty and play violin.

So for my first photo: Steampunk cosplay at Ren faire w/side braid! It's not from today, but It's how my hair is now (though not quite as frizzy since the humidity is much lower right now)

I'm necromancing this thread because I think it's an awesome idea for me right now. I have been finding braids really fabulous recently because they allow me to appreciate the color variation I have going on while I'm growing out dye. I've been tempted to chop at shoulder recently but braids have inspired me to keep growing and cut off the dye slowly

With that in mind, I'm going to challenge myself to 30 days of braids. I'm going to post them here daily... mostly because my newfound love of braids has resulted in me spamming the braid picture thread a bit which I assume is annoying to all the other folks out there that enjoy the thread.

If anyone else out there wants to feel free to join me! :)

Oh fun!
I don't do fun braids anymore but I did a 30 days, 30 braids challenge... oh maybe right around the time I joined the LHC. It was super fun and I kind of miss it!

Braiding has been so relaxing for me lately so I figured I'd embrace it for a bit.

You know, I'd argue that you wear a braid most days. It's just been put into a bun. :)

I do, but not fun ones. I used to do French and Dutch a lot and even things like zipper and waterfall and suspended infinity. It's one thing that I look forward to doing again when my hair is shorter.

Oh neat! Do you have a photo of any of your zipper braids? I love them so so much!

I have been trying and trying but this is the closest I've come so far.

It always seem to go wrong for me around where the back of my head curves. :knuckle:

Here's a zipper braid. I was pretty happy with it-- I don't remember how to do it but it looks a lot like yours I think.

This is suspended infinity. Kind of a mess but my notes say it was easier than a zipper braid.

Two Dutch feathered braids into a French braid. I was super proud of this one.

Last one, I promise.
This was a waterfall twist ladder braid.

Aww, I can't see the pictures.

I like cool braids, but I only do them on rare occasions. For one, they don't always look so great because my hair isn't that thick so they can be sort of lackluster or miss the point altogether. And, I can spend a bunch of time on a fancy braid but no one else will notice (and it's not like I can see it when it's behind me all the time), so I usually figure I might as well do what's quick and easy for me...
