Like that French braiding thing or Dutch, but then with a rope braid?

I decided to give that a go, and managed to come up with something very remotely resembling it.

Did anyone else give it a try?

Here is my attempt in any case.. not much, but hey.. it is the very first!

That's pretty good for a first try. I am finding that I am having a hard time reaching behind my head long enough to so a low braid. I used to french braid my hair for my waitressing job all the time, when I was a teen. I find its much harder for me to work behind my head now.

I've been doing that French rope braids for quite a while. I think that it's a fairly easy style once you get your fingers trained and it is always impressive. I have some pictures of my hair that way--one from Dec 05 and one from last summer. I haven't taken any pictures beyond that but I have been wearing it fairly often. Excuse the second one being a bit messy. I was really hot and that picture was later in the day.

Lucky you!! I couldn't do a rope anything to save my life. I am just not graceful in any manner esp with my hands

magicatt: Those are beautiful! And eadwine that really isn't bad for a first try. The only problem is that it's a wee bit off centre, but certainly better than I'd manage xD. It's certainly presentable, in any case (unlike most of my braiding experiments).

Oh that's one of my favorite braids! Here's one from last year:

I haven't worn it in a while, though--I keep cutting the layers back into my hair because I like how my hair curls when layered, but they make this braid especially messy.

ETA: Oops--that's huge! Trying to resize in Photobucket now...

TwirlyTresses: wow! Just wow!

florenonite: Thanks! Yeah It is harder to center this one than a French or Dutch braid, that is for sure!

Thanks everyone else.. and to those who want to try, do! Will be fun :)

TwirlyTresses wow! That's beautiful. :) They all are it's going to take a while before my hair will be long enough though.

I can do those as pigtails, but not as one braid. I'm persevering, though!

Just one question: how do you get it to keep twisting once you've got all the hair in? Surely it just twists out?

DD4 loves this braid, and it looks good in her hair, but I have not been brave enough to try it on myself. I dont have a mirror anywhere where I can see what Im doing behind my own head and everything always comes out off center.

Not if you twist the two sections around each other in the opposite direction of the section's twist direction.

I was wondering, do you add hair from each side to both strands at once, or do you tilt your head to the side and sweep your hair over to one side and only add hair to the one side? I ask because this is the reason I find two braids easier than one, because I add to the side on the bottom, which is easier than adding to both.

I added from both sides, one side at a time.

Thanks for all the lovely compliments. :)

I added from both sides at the same time too. The best way to get good at this style, I found, was to use it as my bedtime braid. If you do it for a bunch of nights in a row, your hands start knowing what to do on their own.

Wow I could never do that on myself if its gonna look good. I love this braid, it looks unique.

Oh I love it! I think you did a great job for your first time! I'm so bad with braids, but I keep trying!

I've tried it once, long time ago, and I think it doesn't look good on me due to the amount of hair. You hardly can see any swirls just because of the thickness. I also had some layers jumping out. Still have a picture of it, I think, but I'm too embarrassed too show it! :o
Hmm, but maybe I'll try it again someday!

they all look great, is the principle in doing them the same as french/dutch braids? just keep taking from the sides?

There you go. :) It went better this time. I quite like it.

Same principle, just take from both sides and keep on twisting. Phalaenopsis, that looks wonderful!

I can do regular french and dutch braids but anything rope escapes my abilities. Those are some really nice pictures :flowers:

Looks good!
I've never tried this.
Tomorrow wash night, I might try it afterwards when my hair is wet.
