I'd suggest a water softener, if you have hard water, and clarifying occasionally with a "Chelating" shampoo. Baking soda is great for this, but be warned, it can be harsh on hair!

I haven't used shampoo in over 2 years. I use CO
A water softner is not an option at this point.

Nexxus Aloe Rid is great at removing heavy metal build-up.

Also, Cowboy Magic has a demineralizing shampoo and conditioner.
Look for them at a tack store.

Shampoo made for silver/gray hair removes dulling yellow build-up,
and Sally's has a brand called Ion for well water.

You aren't the only one here will well water woes.
I really like your signature. Very funny.

After reading this you may want to focus on the Cowboy Magic Demineralizing Conditioner.
I have it and it works very well.
It may take you a few times.

You can also do a citric acid rinse.

What about a filter for the shower head, rather than a water softener?

And if there's rust in your water, is it possible there's something wrong with your pipes? You might want to get them checked out.
