I don't know if I will be able to describe what I would like to do but here goes. I have seen some pics where they either make a half up or a pony tail but so that the hair in the front seems kind of lifted then folded back. Similarly as if you'd wear a headband and push it to the front a bit. I have tryed lifting and folding my hair but it ends up looking too cartoon like. I'd like to make it look stylish, modern. How do you do these kind of styles? I don't want to backcomb though if that is the way to go...in this case are there any alternatives?

Do you mean a type of "poof"?

If so, backcombing is the main way of doing it, though many people have had success with Bump-Its, which are basically a piece of plastic in whatever size used to give volume to all or part of your hair.

Some also do it by taking the section of hair, pinching the very back of it (like you'd gather it for a tail or something), doing a very slight twist to bring it together, then pushing the pinched part toward the hairline slightly. The gathered hair bows a little (like when you try to push two ends of paper together when it's laying on a table). Then you can just pin the back down where it ended up, leaving the bent part, well, still bent in a little poof. Pouf?

The first pic is exactly what I want! Thanks!

I hope I understood this right. I'll try it tonight and see how it goes.

Yeah I was kind of blabbering out the instructions. I hope it works for you, else I'll have to try to blather out something else!

Very simple to do :)

Collect the hair you wish to poof, do about a quarter twist to it, push is forward slightly to your liking, then secure with either a baby claw clip or two bobby pins Xed together.

I wear my hair down 99% of the time and I do a poof of some sort and of varying sizes to keep it looking a little different and not so casual all the time :)

I also did a side poof a lot when I was working. Simply create the poof but instead of holding the hair straight back and twisting, hold it to the side like bangs. It makes for a cute faux bangish kind of look :)

OOOOOHHH! Like poufs, but I know what you mean! It's hard to make them evenly poufed. I'll have to try these instructions!

Does anyone know if you can get bump-its in europe?

I have really thin, fine hair and can achieve that "poof" look without back combing or using a bump it (and i'm kind of styling my hair "challenged"). Criss crossed bobbies or a little grabby clipper thing (what are those called?? I call them "clippies"). I would think a bum-it up there would kind of hurt after a while.... Seriously, if I can do that, you can!!! Now i'm inspired to try the side faux bang look - i'm not really sure what it is though..... ; )

Wanted to mention....

I'm in the bang growing out stage and the "poof" is almost an everyday necessity for me. I do agree they are hard to make even. Mine are generally a bit off. My DD (who has similar but much thicker hair) can make the most spectacular poofs ever - (just like in the pic - sometimes hers get a little "big", not Snookie big, but big) unless I ask her to do one for me and then it is goofy just like mine are. Maybe it's my hair/head????

A pouf was my standard fare in the '90s. Gumball is right; the twist is the key.

A bumpit is not required for these at all. Just the twist and push is more than sufficient to get that amount of hair to look good.

I tried it with a bumpit and it was stupid ;) It's far to easy to do with nothing at all.

It worked. Thanks! And to everybody else.
