I'm doing the updo challenge, over on the Wear-Your-Hair-Up thread, and I have been annoyed at how I post the same things all the time, so I tried to experiment today. I came up with this, and I wondered if it already has a name?

I basically French braided my hair, then flipped the tail straight up the back of my head and made a braided bun with the rest of the braid tail, at the crown of my head. I secured the end with a hairpin and the bun with a single stick.

I'll try to perfect this and get a better photo of it, and if you want to try and post a photo, that would be awesome!!

I just wanted to know if this has a name already. Thanks for looking!! :D

Pic links are not working, if one doesn't sing in on FB, and I for example don't have an account :(

I am signed in on Facebook, and I still can't get the links to work.

Echoing what rags said. I'm signed in, but likely the settings are preventing others who aren't in your circle to view the images. It sounds interesting though!

I like it!

I can't imagine it would fall down easily and since it's flat it might be good for the gym too. It's also very good for a first try at a style, compared to mine...when I have instructions...

I think it looks pretty cool, especially when you wound the remain part around the top.

I think that looks pretty cool! It's a great and stylish way to use up the length, too.

I like it also. When I braid my hair the long braid hanging down always bugs me, so this would be a good way to put it up & out of the way & look great too.

Very nice! If only my hair were long enough to try it out myself. :)

I like it, definitely a ood way to use up length - shame I'll have to wait a while to try it :p

Wow thats really pretty! I wish my hair was long enough to try it!

Very pretty, and great idea! I'm pretty sure my hair's still too short for the thickness of my braid to be able to pull that off, but I'm looking forward to growing into it. :D

My albums here on LHC are supposed to be set to public, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to see it. Here you go. :)

Does this mean it doesn't have a name yet? :cheese:

PS. It stayed up from 7am til 10:50pm, no readjusting or retucking! :D

When I saw pictures of this updo in your album, I figured it would be very comfortable since the clip/pin has more hair to hold on to because of the French braid underneath, plus it's above the middle point of the back of the head so it would pull even less :D And I was right! It's a very comfortable and pretty bun, and it stays very well so thank you for the tutorial Jamie! This is holding with only one clip (usually I have to use at least two spin pins extra).

I tried something similar to this but threaded the end of the braid through the top where I started the dutch braid, then wound it around in a coil above the braid. Here's a pic:

Yay! :D I'm so glad you guys are able to use this style! I still use it from time to time, and it really does hold well no matter what type of clip I use. I only have 1 ficcare (a large), but it also holds nicely with my cheap silver alligator clips.

Madora, wrapping the tail first around the top of the braid sounds like it would add a lot of stability, thanks for the tip! :flower:

I posted that hairstyle in a thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=73947)a few months ago. I "invented" it also, lol, for doing outdoor work and I also have a headband in place with it. Let me see if I can link it:

You're welcome, JamieLeigh. I found that I sometimes had a problem getting the hair through the top of the braid, so I used my Topsytail tool to pull the hair through the braid and that worked splendidly.

With your length, you should be able to create a splendid bun sitting above the braided length. I used to do this style when my hair was 47 inches. Looks much better with longer hair!

I will have to go and check out your thread! :D I had to go back and look at when I first started this thread, it was February 2010! I can't believe it's been that long, lol. I like to call these resurrected threads "zombie threads", but hopefully this one is harmless and won't really eat your brains. ;) :brains:

Ooo...I still have a topsy-tail in the bathroom drawer. Great idea. :D I'm finding that the longer I get, the more my ends thin out and my braids start looking skimpy past hip length. I guess that's just par for the course, because I'm nowhere near ready to cut it yet, but my buns really aren't much larger than they were at classic-ish thanks to the loss in thickness. My braid sure does look a lot thicker in the first photo I posted to this thread!

Since it's been over a year and a half since I first posted this thread (and I notice I never did give this bun a name, LOL), I thought I'd update with some new photos.

I used a hairstick this time, to secure it, and it is surprisingly staying put since I have it stuck through the French-braided part at the top as well as the bun itself. :)

[ETA 10/12/12 - I replaced the photos earlier in this thread with the photos that I had originally posted in this comment, since I don't have LHC albums other than the length shot one, anymore. Here is a newer photo I took, to replace the photos I removed from my albums. I'm sorry, mods, for any confusion!!]

Maybe a French up, or French bun? Sorry I'm not very creative right now:p

My super awesome friend TorrinPaige did a tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6vq6paUaF0&feature=colike) for me!! :D She named it "The Jamie Leigh" so I guess the name search is over. :p She didn't do exactly what I do, because her hair is a lot thicker than mine and it wouldn't bend in the same places, but it's pretty close!

(I also had to go through here and re-attach photos, since I don't have an "updo" album anymore here)

I was just thinking what hairstyle I was going for, since most are pulling nowadays. Thanks for the reminder Jamie, and for the tutorial Torrin!

I just watched this video. I must say it is beautiful. I have to be content to wear the French braided fold over for a while. My hair is not long enough for the bun at the end. Plus, I have no sticks. Maybe next year I can have a bun at the end. Looking forward to longer hair.

One of the commenters under the video is right - it is a lot closer to the French pinless than the actual bun that I invented, but I'm happy she took a go at it anyway. :D Her version stays just as well as mine does.

The picture in your signature is neat. If I could learn to braid I'd try the braided hair styles.

I wasn't even aware of the French pinless when I took a crack at it. LOL. I was going for the comfort (as few pins and such as possible) and staying power of your original style more than anything once I realized that the concentrated bun up top just wasn't going to cooperate with me. I have to say, in that at least, I was successful. I wore it for over 7 hours -and I didn't get a headache and it didn't move. That's a keeper in my book! :cheese:
