View Full Version : I've always wondered... how long is Princess Leia's hair?

Ok, so I've heard Carrie Fisher did use hair pieces, but if she hadn't, how long do you think her hair would have needed to be to do her classic Leia buns? I'm trying to gaidge how long I'll be needing to grow my hair (I've been dying to do real leia buns but so far I can only manage it with sock buns). I bet you all can tell I'm in Star Wars mood today.. :P

Not sure about the length (maybe waist?), but looking at the first loop it looks like it would be super THICK!!

My hair has no hope of ever being that thick. As it is, it's on the low side of normal.. I just love Leia's hair. So pretty! :3

That would be insanely thick (5-7" pony circumference) hip length hair. I've gotten a comparably sized cinnabun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3262&pictureid=49742) with all of my (at the time) TB, 4" hair, wound tightly. Hers is a bit looser, which makes it look larger, but it's also only half of her hair. :D I've got a pic here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3262&pictureid=47862)of what half of my thickness looks like in a cinnabun, if you'd like to compare.

As a general note, it might interest you to note that wile Leia did use hairpieces, the amount of hair you'd need to do her styles stays pretty constant, unlike Amidala's which... vary rather widely. As an added bonus, Leia's are much easier to do and far, far more practical. And pretty, too!

I can do it with my almost-waist length hair, but the buns seem like they should be bigger. . . .

Sorry to be a party pooper, princess Leia is just a TV character, and when it comes to hair, these TV people have very little integrity. Trying to understand how thick/long her hair is it's like trying to make out the weight and height of a actress off a magazine cover. I spy plenty of hair extensions in there, maybe the buns are not even real, who knows.

I do love the over the shoulder plait, even more than her buns to be honest!

I'm going with Classic or longer. Waist length is too short. Her braid is at waist length and it's bunned in the back...

It's shown down in one of the movies, the one where they're on the planet with all the Ewoks. I think that's the 6th... but I'm not sure. If I remember correctly, it's shown at about hip/tailbone length.

Extensions or not, I think a bun with a braid coming down could be managed with that length of hair - bun half-up, and braid the remainder.

It's weird that none of the Star wars documentaries ever mention whether or not she wears any hair pieces
ETA: oh and i'd say past waist maybe hip or tailbone

At classic length iii thickness without taper I could do all the styles. I didn't think to photo document it, but this time round I will.

On Hoth the single plait she wears around her head is the style that needs the most hair. It can't be bumped up with anything like padding like the two buns can. The way she wears it with two plaits in Return of the Jedi requires slightly less hair, but with the thickness taken into account you'd be lucky to manage with anything less than classic.

ETA: Carrie Fisher definately wore hair pieces. Princess Leia didn't.

I could do reasonable Leia buns at waist length. They aren't tightly wound, so it's easy to get them at that length if you have good thickness.

What a great website!! OK. I was thinking of getting bangs and layers....but now I am changing my mind! There is now WAY I could do any of these styles with layered/banged hair...

Thanks for the inspiration!
Cheers!

Let's see, going off thickness-wise, I'd estimate at least a 5-6 in circumference. For hair like that to be bunned NORMALLY, it'd need to be around BSL. For two buns of that length, I'd estimate waist-hip, if pinned tightly and done with hairspray.

However, these estimates do not take looseness into factor. With hairspray or something for hold, such buns could be done loosely, and still look thick. Also, the braid has no pertinence to this situation, because the hair could be at a different length for the buns because of extensions.

In reality, for buns like that, done tightly, with LHC techniques? I'd guess hip, depending on thickness. Someone with calf or thigh at ii could probably do it too.

I have a photo on a calendar where you can clearly see hair nets over the buns. I think that means you could get away with more slack. You can't see them in the film, but in promotional photos and whatnot they were fairly obvious.

Heh, I'm working off the idea that Princess Leia is real. She is, isn't she?

Yup, it's down in Return of the Jedi and I remember it being about hip or so.

Yes in the 6th film her hair is down and about hip/tailbone length. It looks quite thick down too but they might have used hair pieces...they usually do

Hehe, it's funny because her hair is only about waist/hip length in Return of the Jedi, but in this photo that gigantic braid bun would probably be floor length. The length of her hair suggested varies with each and every updo. Those two enormous buns on either side of the head would require lots of thick, long hair.

Also, she's using hair extensions galore--but despite that, I still appreciate the longhair inspiration Princess Leia instills in people, including me. :)

Of course she is!
I did Leia buns for the opening of Episode III, and I thought I had a picture of it, but I can't find it. My hair was between BSL and waist, I think. They were smaller than Leia's of course, but looked quite OK :)

Perhaps the images here will clear things up. I don't want to take credit for images I did not take or gather, so I'm just linking it. This particular link is to the ceremonial dress she wears at the end of the first (4th) movie.

I knew it! I knew it was too good to be true!! Especially for that scene, she just had way too much hair for it to be real.

Hmm.. on another note, now I'm going to have to look into getting some hair pieces.. I'd love to recreate that style one day (with the aid of some borrowed briads).

Thanks for your answers all! :) I just love analysing movies and movie characters, especially their hair. For someone who asked if Princess Leia was real, she will always be real to me. ^^ Just like all my other beloved movie characters. :D

So, I don't have pics right now, but I kinda figured out how to use my own hair to create a braided hairband similar to Leia's. It's no where near what hers would have been, but my hair isn't nearly as long, either. :P
But it's a start! :)

Those two photos are of my favorite hair styles from the entire Star Wars saga. Leia's hair is about hip and is extremely thick, IMO. I've been to that website, too, and I can do a good version of her Cloud City style from The Empire Strikes Back.

I would also like to mention that the website's instructions on how to do the two styles above are incorrect, but they are close. However, unless you're a Star Wars die hard, it really doesn't matter if it's 100% accurate :)

Hehe, it's funny because her hair is only about waist/hip length in Return of the Jedi, but in this photo that gigantic braid bun would probably be floor length. The length of her hair suggested varies with each and every updo.

Actually, her hair styles are pretty consistent. If there are any variations, it's only a few inches between styles. The big buns are loose, so they could be done with thick hip-length hair.

As for the braided bun, it isn't a braided bun, but it is the only style that isn't really consistent with the rest. However, it does not require floor length hair. It is best accomplished by dividing a pony tail into two sections and braiding each. The bottom section is the tail that you see hanging down, and the top forms the fantastic braided "crown" on top of her head. I'd say thick classic length hair would work.

It's not a braid across her head like it looks. It's two braids.
