View Full Version : A single strand of my hair can lift a ceramic coffee cup!

Today, I just wanted to test out just how strong each of hair strands are, so while I was having breakfast today (at my own desk in my room, not at the dining table where my family would see me! :D) I plucked out a strand of my hair and tried lifting different things. The strand was able to lift my ceramic coffee cup, my cellphone, a metal fork(the one you eat with not a hair fork), and I didn't want to chance breaking it so I only used it to move an 8oz. bottle of hand cream across the table, which it was able to do. I'm actually surprised at how strong my hair still is, given that I've been lightening the Hell out of it with bleach since last summer!

That's great!
A friend of mine took a pencil-sized section of my hair and bent a metal fork on it once, but that's multiple hairs so I suppose that doesn't count.
Way to survive bleach! :cheer:

Seriously, we should become longhair superheroes! Our duty would be to defend hapless civilians from evil hairstylists! I've already got my cape ready! :luke:

I tried to do the same thing and have a photo of it HERE (http://jjjlonghairphotopage.zoomshare.com/files/WEEKLY-monthly-TRIO/HAIR_CARE_after_6-07/hair_strength_JJJ_cpyrt.JPG)
I was sitting at my desk a couple years ago and found a hair so I experimented, then grabbed the camera.
Amazing how strong hair can be!
It would be fun to share photo's like this! :)
BTW, this photo is on my Hair Care Page (http://jjjlonghairphotopage.zoomshare.com/7.html)
I have had a lot of comments about it.

^ Both of you, that is incredible! You all could make a contract with NASA or something! No better yet, you could sell your own hair strands as "state of the art" industrial products! Can be used for: flatbed trucks with towing wenches, cranes, whips, ropes, fishing line (I'd buy it!), sewing thread, and DUCK TAPE could use this stuff! :D

Is that a tiny skillet or something else? Because it looks like cast iron in that picture, and if it is...wow. In any case still impressive.

Now I want to go find a coffee cup and see what happens, but my hair is in an updo right now and I'm lazy.

It is a large magnifying glass and a full size scissors in the picture;)

I wish I could credit it to hard work, but I've been doing pretty much everything that a typical LHC member would never dream of doing to their hair. I've been lightening my entire head of hair with 20 volume bleach for the last 7 months, I actually brush my hair quite frequently, and I even heat style my hair a lot as well. However, I get all my blowouts and my haircoloring done at my hair salon, I leave all the messy stuff to the professionals so I don't risk destroying my hair by myself.

Here's how far I've come.

I had to try, of course.. ;)
I didn't tie the hair, so I suppose this might not count as one hair, as I'm holding both ends of it. But it did hold the Wii-mote :D

Not the best quality pic, but the flash makes it just barely possible to see the hair.
ETA: I see LadyLongLocks held her hair the same way, so I say: it counts! My hair has super powers!

Wow. I tried lifting a coffee mug with mine, and my hair stretched a few inches and then snapped.

That's a pretty good test for coarse texture, I would think. I doubt anyone with fine hair could pull that off!

Eric that is so cool. Your hair should star in it's own movie ! Maybe you could make a youtube video of your hair lifting tricks. :p

Okay guys, prepare to be amazed! Even I can't believe that just a few strands of my hair could lift this!

I gathered 22 shed strands of my hair from my paddle brush and from my pillow and just held them all together in a bundle with my hand. Then, as you can see in this picture I used this bundle of my hair to life up a kettle! The kettle was empty of water by the way, but still even with it being empty its stainless steel!

Yeah, it kind of makes me feel inferior since I take good care of my hair, but there's no way it could lift much of anything, it's so baby fine.

(Amazingly impressive though--this fine-hair is just jealous. :o)

That's amazing! Congratulations on having such strong hair.

That made me think of the time a friend of mine wrapped one of my hairs tightly around her finger and was surprised that it started to cut off the circulation. Apparently her hair wasn't strong enough to wrap around her finger like that.

I don't know if my hair is anywhere near as exceptionally strong as yours. I do know mine likes to break things. Things like bristles on brushes and necklaces. Perhaps I'll go find a strand to see how strong it really is.

Maybe not fine, but mine is on the finer side of medium, as far as I can tell.

I tried this with one of my coarser hairs, and was able to lift my small camera with it --- until the hair snapped a second or two later :) Hair is truly amazingly strong, I have read it's as strong as copper wire of similar thickness!

Awesome, Eric!! :D I had to try it too, so I plucked one. I can hold up a ceramic coffee mug (a pretty heavy one!), a dinner fork and an Xbox 360 controller! I tried lifting a shoe, but it broke. Darn my big feet. :p This is pretty neat, since I've always classified myself on the Fine side of Medium. :D
