At the first, let me say this is not an examination of the validity or fairness of stereotypes, long hair or otherwise. It's meant in fun, and also because I think our collective results might be interesting.

So, long hair stereotypes that I fit:

I am most definitely a crunchy earth mama; I use words like cosmic and universal and collective often, and have considered living on a commune.

I love horses.

I have a great affinity for cats. I don't share my home with any only because I am allergic. (Though there is one who has set up an escort service under my house, but that is a thread for another day.)

I read fantasy fiction, and sometimes romance novels. In fact, I'm bookish in general.

I love folk music. Yep, especially acoustic guitar.

I dig Medieval and Renaissance fairs.

I am very spiritual (though not very religious).

I am seriously in touch with my emotions.

I don't stay in touch with current fashion trends.

I bathe less frequently than many other people (my hair, WAY less frequently).

Hmmm. That's all I can think of right now.

So which stereotypes do you fit? Please feel free to post contrasting ones. Lord knows there's no consistency in generalizations!

I had no idea those were long hair sterotypes. I'm still new I guess. ;)

Out of those you mentioned (since I don't know any others):

I am pretty crunchy, especially when it comes to raising my children.
I love horses, cats, fantasy & romance novels.
I own and acoustic guitar, but don't play well.
I do not keep up w/ fashion, at all.

But, I do bathe every day and wash my hair every other day.

Just to clarify, the ones I listed aren't LHC stereotypes, just ones I've encountered in my own life!

I follow few rules or customs about clothes or appearance.

I love metal music.

No offense to the OP, but I find any stereotypes to be insulting to say the least. I don't set out to fit into any kind of stereotypes, nor do I make a conscious effort to be "different" on purpose. I am me. I'm a individual with my own individual likes, dislikes, beliefs, and opinions, and over time I may even change my opinions. I choose to grow my hair long for one simple reason. Its who I am. I don't need any more justification than that.

--I'm big into homeopathic medicine and healthy organic anything.
--I'm an ex-homeschooler who's never had a trendy haircut. :p
--I used to be very New Age-y.
--I'm a die-hard Rennie.
--I love folk music and 70's classic rock.
--I sew my own clothes (sometimes)
--I'm a cat lady.
--I wear long skirts and dressed almost exclusively (SO comfy).
--I'm a lit nerd.

A stereotype that always seems to get incorrectly applied to me is that I must be Apostolic, due to the long hair and skirts.

Oh my.

I keep cats, always have.
I do not follow fashion.
I am a little old lady and wear a little old mean librarian type bun.
I bake bread and raise veggies.
I bathe less frequently now that I am old (my skin would fall off if I bathed like when I was 20).
I wear long skirts.
and Birkenstocks.
I have a Martin guitar and used to play folk music back in the 60s. (but was not a Flower Child.)
I make my own granola.

This cracked me up!

I was homeschooled.
I work in the alternative medicine field.
I have a cat (and a long-haired dog!)
My favorite band is The Beatles and I adore John Denver.
I read like it's my day job.
I don't really wear makeup or watch R-rated films.
I wear tie-dyed clothes.
I recycle.

The list could go on... and on...

Well since I know that this thread is meant as an ironic approach on stereotypes, I post mine:

-I have long hair (DUH!)
-I listen to metal and goth music (also to some EBM, but who is splitting hairs...)
-I ride a bike (does that make me an eco friendly hippie or just shows the fact, that I don't have a drivers license?)
- I'm calm most of the time and friendly to people

So I might be a "calm friendly hippie goth metal guy" with a bike.

PS: Oh yeah, and I like cats too. :-)

If it's not your thing, that's fine, but everyone else seems to be having fun

*just waiting to get mauled by a bunch of people lol*

On that note, I don't know what, if any, stereotypes apply to me.

Looking at your avatar, I think you might fit into "the one with a braid" stereotype. :-)

I think I am the anti-long hair stereotype. Aside from having a cat, and being pretty into recycling, I don't fit into any of them. Maybe its because my hair isn't long enough yet. :p

Metalheads! Good one!

OK, I thought of some more:

Any biker babes or dudes out there? (NOTORIOUS longhairs!)

Peaceniks? Poets? Math professors? Classics students? (You KNOW you have ponytails...)

Tolkien devotees, raise your hands!

Outdoors enthusiasts, you can't hide your length under your bandanas forever...

Divas? Don't be shy!

(By way of addition, the Peacenik, Tolkien, and Outdoors stereotypes apply to me!)

I keep cats
I don't follow current fashion
I wear weird things (hairtoys) in my hair that most people don't recognise
I love sci-fi
I'm geeky
I wear long skirts
I wear comfortable shoes

ETA: Not sure if it's a stereotype yet but I wear Little seven earrings ;)

*just waiting to get mauled by a bunch of people lol*

Can you be mauled in a positive way? - Thanks for putting it better than I would

Ohhh this is so fun! I live in a pretty consrvative and rather old fashioned place so i stand out like a prickly pear in the amazon :p.

Here's Mine -

I am a total tree hugging, save the whales, redue/reuse/recycle, aminal rights, hippe chick :)

For the future i would be perfectly happy with my 12 cats, pet farm animals ( i think cows and goats are freakin adorable :p), a acre or two of free land, a nice little house & barn, and my compost heap out in the boonies :)

I love horses.

While i do enjoy television i prefer a good book if i have a nice sunny warm place to read it :)

I love country music! Its the only thing i'll listen to unless im dancing (modern, ballet, and such)

I think id have a great time at theme oriented things like (enter theme word here) fairs.

I am spirital but not religious

I like to look nice but couldnt tell you a thing about current trends. Nor do i shop retail (except for panties and 80%+ off :p)

I dont "wash" my hair by conventional standards.

I love pinstripe feordas (not that it has anything to do ith hair but its a quirk not often seen around here)

I LOVE my beat up old truck (though it isnt running at the moment. My working baby is a 91 model Cadillac 4 door Sedan who i love to pamper and shine up :eyebrows:.

Oh and i make most of my hair/body/face stuff from scratch :)

Thats all i can think of for now but im sure i will be back later :). [/quote]

Sometimes it's fun to have a tongue-in-cheek thread!

-I love animals(our 'family' consists of two humans and FIVE furchildren, cats and dogs)

-I'm totally into 'reducing my impact on the earth', so that means hippie right? :p

Hmm, that's all for now that I can time of.

ETA:
-I wear no makeup!

I listen to metal, goth, and industrial.
I love my cat.
I'm into spirituality, but not religion.

But I never thought these were "long hair stereotypes" until I saw it grouped together here in that way.

But I don't feel I fit into any of the other categories mentioned, I don't feel I am a hippie. I like rennaissance stuff but I don't really participate at all. I know there are folks here who don't fit any of these stereotypes and have really long hair.

February 12th, 2010, 09:36 PM
I did Ren Faires, but my hair was short for most of them. So, I don't think that one counts. I don't fit any of the others except for having cats, but I have had most every other kind of pet as well. I just like critters.

Tolkien and cat person here! Whoo hoo!

Also I am fascinated by other long flow-y things, like skirts, Arwen-style sleeves (I did mention the Tolkien thing, right?), the long fur on teeny-tiny dogs, long cat tails, tassels, etc. Not sure that's a stereotype so much, but it does perhaps explain why I'm growing my hair out.

Oh my :D I don't think I fit too many.

I do wear make up every time I leave the house no matter what.
I don't wear skirts other than on a rare occasion and only in the summer.
I don't have a cat. I love dogs. And never was in to horses.
I don't wear boots. I wear cute shoes.
I love fashion and trendy clothes.
I don't shop thrift stores for clothes.
I shave my legs, pits and arms.
I detest LOLcats, LOTR and Harry Potter.
I drive a big SUV most of the time.
I take a bath almost daily and wash my hair as often as I want to.
I'm not vegan or vegetarian. I eat meat daily.
I hate granola.
I have several TVs and watch TV daily.
I knit, sew, and quilt. I think this is the only one where I really fit the stereotype.

Hmmm...

I don't have any cats nor read fantasy or science fiction. I like culture and history but I am not a Rerenaissance fan. I wear very simple, modern flattering clothes (mostly black). I don't qualify as a hippie. I don't like metal music...

However....
-I don't get out of the house much. My friends drive me nuts and I need to find real people who have an idea of fun that does not involve extreme quantities of alcohol (one would think these people are EASY to find... not in a college town!)
- I eat naturally (paleo, organic) and don't use conventional beauty products (make them myself)
- I wear vibram five fingers sometimes (google it)
-I like skirts and dresses but they are not out of fashion and are always short (I honestly don't wear them that often)
-I go without makeup frequently
-I am fairly athletic (skiing mostly)
-A lot of my jewelry is tribal-esque (feathers and and bone beads and shells... natural looking stuff)

^Maybe some of this counts.

I do consider my long hair part of my identity and I think it suits me, though.

boo. The only ones I can think of for me:

History Buff. - I've been involved with 18th century reenacting since my conception. But 18th cent. is different from Ren Fairs, as far as hair goes, since women's hair is completely covered during that era.

But I'm SO into fashion and trends that it hurts me to see some of you not owning up to your true beauty potential! I'm not saying that you should use damaging products or make up or anything; there are ways to release the beauty you were born with and incorporate it into modern styles.
<text removed pending mod decision> I wont go on about it here =]

I love my cats.
I'm earthy.
I try to use all natural beauty products or mostly natural.
I love boxing, kickboxing, and UFC.
I love all plants.
I wear a lot of skirts, but not all of them long, but definitely flowy and natural light weight fabric.
I don't wear unnatural fibers/fabric.
I sometimes wear comfortable shoes, but I also wear heels.
I'm a huge fan of The Tenth Kingdom mini series, and the movies Labyrinth and Willow.
I'm not a huge fan of Tolkien, but I do think the man was an excellent writer.
I eat mostly natural.
I want to be more outdoorsy again, but my light sensitivity kind of prevents that.
I wouldn't mind being a librarian, I love reading and collect books.
I am vain, but not in mainstream sort of way, and I don't judge others and their style/beauty choices.
I do keep up with fashion trends, but only if I truly like them.
I'm obsessed with my hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows, to the point I study their evolution in history.
I love crafts.
I like clothing from the Renaissance period, and the civil war period .
I'm a stay at home mom and can be called "kept".

I guess I'll elaborate further. I don't like stereotypes because you simply can't separate people into neat little boxes with labels on them.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, looking at all the long hair stereotypes that were mentioned on this thread, I see that I fit into absolutely none of them.

I live for fashion. Leather bags, watches, sunglasses, scarves, accessories are more important to me than food. I can spend my entire week's paycheck in just one day at Macy's.

I'm an omnivore. I'll eat anything, provided its edible and it tastes good. So that includes chicken, steak, cheeseburgers, eggs, pizza, but I'll also have tons of good fruits veggies and fish so its a well balanced diet.

I shower twice a day. I shower first thing in the morning, and also at night right before bed. I like being clean.

I'm not a musician. I love listening to music and have my favorite bands, but who doesn't? I certainly wouldn't count loving music as a longhaired stereotype since everyone, both longhaired and short haired loves some kind of music.

Now that I think about it, I really think I'm a lot more "mainstream" than I thought I was.

People mistake me for a hippie.

I'm very attuned to the past more than the present (I'm very old-fashioned).

I'm a bibliophile (nuffsaid :cheese: )

I write short-stories and poems... (requests anyone? Lol. :eyebrows: )

They (some people) think I belong to a cult.

They think I belong to a band.

I study/practice herbal medicine and herbology.

I have a deep-seated interest in spiritual beliefs, especially those of the Cathars, Wiccans, and Native Americans.

I've always wanted to go to a Mediaeval Faire but they don't have those here. (bummer...)

I love both cats and dogs.

I'm the motherly type of person (according to my best girl-friend)

I love to make things... clothes, jewelry, tools. :D

I love gothic horror fiction. :pumpkin:

I've always wanted to live in the country, preferably in a Hobbit house.

I'm a happy social recluse, but I don't mind having a minute number of good friends, as I like to entertain and cook for people. :p

Oh, and I've been tagged by most people as a 'gypsy', and I just love that tag! :cheese:

Here is my list. don't actually fit any stereotype except maybe a gothic, medieval, flower child.

1. I'm a lost flower child. (meaning i was born in the late sixties and never moved on much into modern times.)

2. Love folk music and Celtic music.

3. Romance novel reader extraordinaire! always carry a romance novel everywhere.

4. Love leggings, medieval chemise style blouses and flat shoes.

5. I'm a complete geek when it comes to fashion. (don't follow it much and rarely wear in fashion outfits.) unless medieval style clothes are in fashion.

8. My hair is long and hoping it will get longer, (beg it every day to grow to knee length. )

9. Home schooled in Elementary and Boarding school as a teen.

10. Adore cats but allergic to them. Have a few dogs, but my baby is a Pomeranian/Chihuaha mix called Sookie, she lives in the house, sleeps in my bed and wakes me up with doggie kisses. and is completely spoiled rotten.

11. I love going to Celtic faires, Medieval faires and Ren faires.

12. My Fave TV shows are The Tudors, True Blood, Bones, Fringe and the now disappeared Moonlight. (If i was chosen to appear on a TV show i would choose to be on The Tudors or True Blood instead of Fringe or Bones. )

13. I can not play a musical instrument even if my life depended on it. (i've tried to learn piano and guitar but never was able to.)

I'm a librarian! :grnbiggri (well, will be once I finish college) Can't wait for my hair to grow a bit more so I can do awesome buns.

I'm also a water nymph kind of girl. Give me some whales and underwater seascapes any day. I don't know if that's a stereotype, but I've noticed quite a few mermaid avatars and signatures here on LHC.

None of these. I find that I miss out on the stereotypes. Somewhere out there, a stereotype exists that includes me. Until then, I'll sit tight and wait for it.

And I dislike cats. Evil furry little dander creatures, all of them!

Socially reclusive, but will be in social events if needed.
I live in Oregon (aka hippie/democratic/green-living central)
Most of the oils in my house are used for my hair
I usually don't follow main fashion trends
It irks me when people cut their hair because someone else told them if they didn't then it was proof they were gross/bad/dumb people.

I dress kind of folksy because all my clothes are hand-me-downs that I end up modifying or accessorizing and they just end up unintentionally jumbled together that way.

I'm a cronically shy wall flower around people I don't know.

I try to support local everything - from the arts to the food I eat - rather than mass production (at least as much as I can manage or afford)

If my local area roads weren't suicidal, I would ride my bike everywhere

If I had a proper garden, I would plant my own vegetables

I am a misfit with regards to these stereotypes and therefore a walking talking oxymoron as I am just a mixture of opposites and I think certain people have pointed out stereotypes are misleading. I agree, people try to box categorize me but I evade definition and I am sure I'm not the only one.

-I hate granola
-I hate ren fairs
-I love cats
-I am far far removed from hippiedom...hippies? whats that?
- I hate knitting/quilting etc
- I dont like loose flowing skirts/hippy clothing/tye-dye etc
- I love music and playing music
-I love wearing make up
- I love wearing short skirts, revealing clothing, high heels or even better thigh high boots when I'm in the mood
- I believe in female supremacy
- I like some good old fashioned values but not those that are sexist
-I love powerlifting, I can lift 105 kilos
-I love boxing
- I like violent action movies
- I love academia, I am doing a part-time doctorate at Oxford
- I love to be a business type woman and working towards goals when not studying I am working hard on business projects
- I love herbs
-I love the moon
- I love wearing all black but I'm definitely NOT a goth
- Paganism, celtic schmeltic etc= not for me, I prefer my own religion where I decide the rules, nonetheless I believe in a flow of energies.
- I love to be an alpha female
- I dont ever want to have children so mother earth stuff = veto
- I love looking after my house and being a home body
- I think sci fi futururistic movies that take an ideological slant are more interesting than historical movies
- I believe in organic natural beauty only
- I believe in eating only organic, recycling, looking after our planet
-I'd rather donate to endangered species than people causes such as Haiti-no offense but its true
- I love animals in general but I love a good rare organic steak
- I dont drink ever
- I love a good party

- I dont like family stuff

Wow, I really dont fit in to any of these... Well, I do love cats and other animals (more than humans actually). But other than that, I love my high heels, my nice clothes, my fake nails, my bling-bling jewelry and I hardly ever leave the house without makeup (just mascara and lipgloss but still makeup). I guess I fit in to a completely different stereoptype... :D

Don't know....

I like taking things to bits, for UK peeps, the only TV show I will watch on a regular basis is Top Gear, but I don't watch TV much at all. Fast cars and fast military aeroplanes are good.
Right now I don't drive, but I'd love a motorbike.
I hate cats, but dogs and birds are fine.
I hate granola, lentils and chickpeas, they make me physically sick.
Long skirts are OK, but long dresses must have a pronounced waist and a tight fitting top otherwise I feel pregnant and I hate that.
I like my tight jeans and boots
I can use a chainsaw on trees and hedges, it's good and much quicker than using handtools. Having chainsawed the hedge to a good height I can then lay it. I don't like the way our hedges look when they've been flailed, or what the flail does to the plants.
I can build a drystone wall.
I grow my own vegetables.
I like cooking (same as I like making anything, inc knitting, crochet) and have been known to make my own bread on occasion.
We don't have Ren Fairs in the UK thank goodness, but the Viking re-enactors are good. Sadly, I'd have to wear long dresses and not fight.
I'll read anything as long as it isn't romantic fiction; having regular access to a university library with a supply of science journals would be great.
I prefer to be out in the country away from other people.
I morris dance, but I will only do Border morris, I don't like Cotswold or clog.
I play the flute, harp, violin, viola, Anglo-concertina, piano-accordion, guitar.
I hate New-Age music, the Sisters of Mercy, Lorreena McKennit, Enya, the Mission
If I hadn't had to give up my degree I'd be doing volcanology, and if I had the money I'd love to do one of the tours they (used?) to do to Yasur where you can rappel into the crater between explosions

Stereotypes are a part of life. You can either get offended by them, or you can have a laugh. No one is trying to put anyone in boxes here. It's just a bit of silly fun :)

"Remember you are unique, just like everybody else."

As for me,

I am unfashionable.
I aspire to be the crazy cat lady living alone on a hill
I wash my hair "only" once or twice a week.
I preach the wonders of coconut oil to everyone who will (or won't) listen.
I care more about animals than people.
I rarely wear make up.
I use oil to clean my face (OCM).
I like wearing flowers in my hair.
I love Sci Fi.
I don't get out much (LOL!)
I'm socially awkward.
I love metal and 'ethnic' music.
I own more hair toys/tools/products than... well, anything else.
I feel a bit ill when I see people ripping a brush through their hair.

Although..

I never wear skirts.
I wear boots (New Rocks) ALL the time.
I an am atheist.
I don't even know what granola IS.
I'm completely non-maternal.
I don't read anything that isn't on a computer screen very often.

I was thinking about what to post to this thread and realized my life is one big paradox...

-I love Jesus and talk to Him every day, even make my living in ministry, but no one would call me religious because I'm way too sensible to get that emotional about anything.
-I am very much into the arts scene and most of my friends are very accomplished artists, but I'm a metal head (don't tell my friends).
-I'm a metal head and I love Jesus. Never thought about that one before.
-I ride a motorcycle, but I'm not a stereotypical biker as you can already tell, I just love speed.
-I'm not into fashion at all. I would probably wear long skirts all the time, but I'm a guy and I'm not into cross-dressing.
-I'm not into organic or naturopath, I'm not a vegetarian or anything like that, but I tend to eat things close to their natural form, even cut my own meat, because it tastes better that way.
-I am a geek. I am an engineer that will build or fix anything, but I'm not a stereotypical geek because I do it for the art, not the science. That's probably why I have so many artist friends, because I can actually make their twisted ideas reality (sometimes).
-I don't read, I watch movies. But I watch to admire the cinematography and the creativity. I probably could not name 5 actors, or remember 3 plots. OK, I love sci-fi. The one exception to the that.

You know, I think my "thing" is just doing my thing in spite of what anybody else is doing, which I guess is really the stereotype we're talking about here.

HAHA!

Stereotypes are a part of life. You can either get offended by them, or you can have a laugh. No one is trying to put anyone in boxes here. It's just a bit of silly fun :)

"Remember you are unique, just like everybody else."

This is it, exactly.

And of the ones added that the posters were unsure if they qualified, I can definitely attest to the anime/bellydancing/Celtic-loving stereotypes!

How about anti-authoritarian? I wonder if long hair still signifies that to some people. Anyway, I aspire to that in my personal life.

ETA: Wait! Wait! What about Jam Band fans? Anyone else who couldn't imagine dancing in a field to the Grateful Dead (back in the day), Phish, Stringcheese, Widespread Panic, Donna the Buffalo, etc. without their patchwork, spinning skirts, hemp and LONG HAIR?!?!?

I love this thread! So fun!! Haha, great idea to start this one, Beets! :) First off...

I play a harp

Yay harp! I play too (Celtic and Classical), although I haven't in ages because I don't own one. I love meeting fellow harpists. :)

Anyway, here's my list:

I love all animals, and especially cats.
I foster kittens for the local shelter.
I am passionate about environmental stewardship and animal rights.
I knit.
I surf.
I practice yoga daily. (Although this is less for the spiritual aspect and more because I have chronic pain that yoga helps with greatly.)
I make my own yogurt, granola, nut butters, and bread.
I am a proponent of natural healthcare.
I like vegetables. :)
I love books and libraries.
I love fantasy and sci-fi. (Hi there, fellow Tolkein fans!)
I love playing dress-up (ren faires, historical fashions, etc.)

And lastly, here is my favorite quote: "Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack the first is not to assail the last." - Charlotte Bronte

I didn't realize that there were long hair stereotypes. But, for the sake of information gathering, here are my particular interests. :D

-I'm a musician, but not into folk music and don't like new age - I prefer baroque, classical, romantic, some modern, you get the picture.
-I'm religious.
-I rarely ever wear skirts or dresses - much prefer pants and jeans.
-I love animals.
-I love Tolkien.
-I have a fondness for fairyfolk and love fairytales.
-I'm very much into the paranormal.
-I make my own granola.
-I use mostly natural products and organic when I can.
-I like to look stylish, not trendy or earthy - one of my style icons is Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (she had gorgeous long hair). :)

I'm sure there's more - BUT - I was into all those things when I had a short, spiky pixie cut with hot pink highlights. :p

Little_Bird

I also don't like the word "stereotype" :p But, it's a word! And the thread seems fun! So let's see...

- First off, I'm a very feminine boy
- I am very sensible
- I love nature and everything that is natural - the only thing I hate about the human body is body hair
- I love animals... LOVE LOVE LOVE
- I'm a hippy at sould, altough I am an abstentionist :p
- I love dolls and mu little ponies
- I love medieval aesthetic, and renaissance too. Everything that's before the 19th century interests me
- Altough I'm studying fashion design, and intend to be a fashion designer, I hate trends. Actually, people in the fashion industry don't like them as much as some people might think
- I love all forms of mystical creatures and fantasy, specially faeries and mermaids
- I love Disney, specially Aurora and Ariel
- I love taking care of myself and spending time with my hair... I'm a healthy narcisistic person (I love mirrors!)
- I love music at most of it's forms - I sing
- I'm an artist
- I love dancing, and my hair plays an important role at it

And the most important thing that makes me have and want and like long hair is...

I'm me :)

YAY, fun thread :D

This is a fun thread! I think it proves that there really ISN'T any such thing as a stereotype. We are all unique and individual. No two of us are alike. If we were, the world would be a boring place! :)

For myself:
I mainly like long hair because it is easy. You can wear it up or down; wavy or straight; and it is timeless. Long hair has been acceptable fashion since the beginning of human-kind.

I, too, love Jesus. He is my reason for being.
I love my family. Being with my children and grandchildren is what I enjoy most.
I love all animals, especially cats. I have rescued many animals over the years, from dogs to cats to turtles to rabbits. In fact, I am a rescuer by nature. I have two adopted children who had an awful life before we found each other. Just yesterday, I bought a sick and dying plant and am nursing it back to health.
I love to read, knit and walk in the outdoors. I love living in the country and am not a "city" person at all. I like simple living and quiet time.
I like classical, gospel and Bluegrass music.
I recycle and believe in keeping open space wild.
I love stories of the paranormal and loved ones who have passed on "visiting" those who love them.
I believe that what we experience here on this earth is just a tiny fraction of reality. I believe that much more will be made availabale to us once we leave our physical bodies.
I dress very simply. I prefer pants to skirts or dresses. I have casual slacks and dressy slacks. I wear shoes for comfort, not for fashion. I tend to buy several of an item in different colors, rather than create outfits.
I do have a handbag ******, which seems a contradiction to the above, I know. However, I buy them on ebay or in thrift shops, so I don't feel guilty.
I just try to live my life, treating others as I would want to be treated, and to try to please God.

Heheheheheh.

I read constantly- mostly classics or other 'literature' but I also love a good escapist fantasy novel.

I love cats- I have one.

I wear a great many long skirts.

I like to look 'classy,' I suppose- I'm not into trends, I don't follow fashion, but I like to wear things that are timeless, like A-line skirts and button down Oxford shirts and well-made shoes. Does that make sense? So I shop at thrift stores for quality items.

I bake my own bread, home can jams and vegetables, and am generally very good in the kitchen.

Tea is my primary beverage.

I love herbal medicine (but I also love Western medicine. I can't bear to see it bashed- it's done so much good in the world!)

I don't wear much makeup or shave very often.

Music. I play the fiddle and madly love folk music, from bagpipes to the harp . . . and I also love Classical music.

I'm religious.

I'm very liberal.

I knit, sew, and quilt.

This is a funny thread. I get told that I need to get out of the 19th century and join the 21st.(look at my username, do you think thats going to happen?). I live the life of a vegetarian, crazy dog lady in an antique house with a lot the modern "necessities" missing. I like every music from metal to gregorian chants but when I crank up the classical at work I get that knowing look from my customers. Makes me laugh. Once people know me a bit the fact that I tell them I'm growing my hair to my behind doesn't surprise them at all.

-anything medieval and renaissance inspired makes me happy
-I'm an earthy hippie chick
-I love long flowing clothes
-I love to read. Anything, everything.
-I love Ren Faires

...and I'm sure there's a bunch other's I fit. I pretty much love it:) Although, I'm growing out my hair, I've always been a long hair at heart.

Scraggy old tramp.

That's my favourite answer!

I didn't realise sci-fi was a long hair stereotype? Full on fantasy with fairies, elves and stuff, but not sci-fi? Hmm. Well I fit that.
I wear second hand clothes from charity shops (skint)
I use public transport and walk a lot (too skint to drive)
I listen to music made by people older than my parents. If they are still performing I try and see them live before they die. No such luck with the 1930s blues singers...
I love history, but WWII wins over Medieval every time. We have a Medieval village fairly close and I always try and go when they have events. These aren't on the scale of US ones though.
I'm an artist (exhibited) and poet (in books I keep hidden away)
I like the countryside/beach but not for sunbathing.
I often choose veggie food so people I've known for years still assume I'm vegetarian.
I do yoga.
I do a variety of crafts.
I have a hobby type interest in science. That's worse than an educational or work interest isn't it?
I usually know what the moon is up to.
I like animals but can't have any right now.

A lot of these I fit into by accident/default and still would if I had short hair.

February 13th, 2010, 09:58 AM
Hee hee. I do fit a lot, but also do NOT fit a lot.

I am very crunchy, especially my parenting is totally AP--
exclusive breastfeeding on demand, cosleeping, babywearing, cloth diapering.

We eat organic, local, and grow our own, even bake my own bread, and drink raw milk.

I like to wear long skirts and Birks.

I love cats. Yeah, I'll be a crazy old cat lady.

I read. A lot. Way too much. All the time.

Ren Faires rock. I also love Celtic music.

All that said I'm a conservative, religious, grumpy old woman.

Heh, I guess I am more of a "stereotypical" long hair than I realized.

-I read constantly, mostly classical literature, and I write short stories and novels. I want to be a published author eventually.

I love fantasy.

I am a vegan.

I'm very health-conscious.

I'm an environmentalist.

I'm very liberal.

I'm an activist for a lot of causes: social justice, poverty, animal rights, and many others.

I love long skirts and dresses.

I couldn't care less about fashion.

I listen to a lot of classical music, and really old music that's before even my grandparent's time.

I love tea.

I love philosophy. (Ok, not sure if this is one or not, but whatever....)

I guess I just like living a more laid back life than most people in our society. I don't like a lot of drama the way some people my age seem to.

February 13th, 2010, 10:30 AM
Wow!
I've been all over the place, a consequence of living this long?
I came of age in the 60's being in the class of '65, graduating college in 1/1969. I was never a hippie though. My training was in oil painting and lived in Greenwich Village-grew up in NY. I always considered my self as an individual, chosing not to slavishly follow trends. But! I did get married moved out of the city when my oldest was 1 and had three more kids. Studied/practiced herbal medicine, had an organic garden before the invasion of the woodchucks and deer and bunnies. At one time we had six cats a cockatiel two gerbils and and iguana and hermit crab. Now just one 19 year old cat and a 4 year old pit bull. I was an environmental activist and now work for the the government (Welfare to Work) and am an elected official. I prefer to wear skirts, all lengths and wear anything from Naots to open toed spike heel platform shoes.

I was the type of mom who took her kids out of school to watch that total eclipse of the sun laying on our backs in the yard and had a song about everything in the universe. I made green and blue farina for the kids and made grilled cheese sandwiches in the shape of locomotives. I live in a purple and green 120 victorian cottage and drive a saab.

I love Erik Satie and Debussy and all Jazz. I like classical guitar and flute and violin- just about all music except hip hop and rap and whatever other newfangled stuff is out there.

I'm a paradox.

This is fun! What a great way to see people as they see themselves.

I have never seen LOTR
I have never been to a Ren Fair

I only wear makeup on special occasions. I do love lipstick and wear it daily though.

I am a Barenaked Ladies groupie and have been to over 30 concerts, 2 cruises and they know me by sight.

I love animals, esp cats and chickens which is what we have right now

My husband is a short haired math prof

I am extremely liberal and adore Obama

I read faster than anyone I know and always have, in the third grade I read faster than my teacher.

My best friend is my husband

My mother is toxic and we haven't spoken for five years

I love black and white movies and I watch the same movies over and over and over

I recycle even though my city doesn't and it's a pain

I hardly ever go out, I am a home body and like my cooking best.

As a fashion lover (but sane enough to never, ever want to work in the industry), I don't think long hair is unfashionable at all. Most models, in fact, have long hair. It's pretty and versatile, what's not to like?

But back to stereotypes:

I'm a classic city kid, I don't even have a driver's license. I ride a bike, walk, or take the train. I'm so eco-conscious. :D

I wear fashionable, but not trendy clothes. I shop at vintage and secondhand stores mostly. I wear heels frequently, but not too high.

I hate dresses and skirts, but I had to wear a uniform in high school, and may be scarred from that. I like my fitted jeans, thank you very much.

I do, however, love plants, and used to be a gardener. I love being outdoors and getting out of the city. I seriously love trees.

I don't wear makeup and make many of my own body/hair products.

I only shower once a week, but have to wash my hair every couple of days (don't worry, I smell very nice and do brush my teeth/take a sponge bath/wash my face daily).

I'm totally an academic. I was a major Latin nerd when I was younger.

I don't have a t.v. but the internet is a vice.

I'm a librarian, so yes, I read. A lot.

I have tattoos. Big ones.

I run marathons. In proper exercise gear.

I don't know where I am going with all of this--what stereotype am I, with my hair???

love long flowy skirts, and blouses with flowy sleeves

love boots, sandals, ballet flats or canvas sneakers

love all animals... dogs, cats, horses, snakes, birds.... currently have 3 dogs

love reading.... mostly sci fi, fantasy, horror, mystery, vampire type stuff, but occassionally a romance novel will make it's way into my hands

love Ren fests, wish we had one closer to here

love antiques and old houses, which is a good thing since that's where I live. LOL ;)

I am introverted and enjoy being by myself.

I am very girly, don't like sports and enjoy makeup and clothes.

I love cats, gardening, and reading (especially fiction), but after that I pull away from the norm in long hairs. I get Vogue, Nylon, and Elle monthly, I love fashion, I shower everyday (including my hair), and enjoy shopping.

I am crafty though (knit, garden, bake ect), so I think it evens out.

Things that contradict the stereotype:

:)

I love high fantasy (not so into low or urban fantasy; Neil Gaiman is the exception);
I recently decided that I want to become a scholar of Renaissance literature :o (though this is a little different than doing SCA or going to Ren Faires);
I love folk music (the Indigo Girls are my favorite -- though they both have short hair);
I'm a vegetarian;
I've dabbled in "alternative" religion, though I keep coming back to the Advaita Vedanta view of the world;
I love Celtic mythology (lots of mythology, but Celtic has a special place in my heart);
I read Tarot;
I'm slightly obsessed with the occult;
I hardly wear makeup (although I've been doing more lately, mostly eyes);
I angst over the fact that I use sulfates and cones;
I love cats and dogs;
I love fairies and elves;
I have beyond-vanilla piercings :D

Now, here are my anti-stereotypes:

I loathe the whole construct of "nonconformity" (because it really is a self-delusional construct, just look at this thread :lol:);
I'm attached to my computer and cell phone;
I'm not touchy-feely at all;
I hardly ever wear skirts (though I want to, I just keep buying jeans, dammit! :lol:);
I use Evil Pantene, Evil Herbal Essences, Evil Dove...;
I don't want a tattoo (though I like some on others);
I don't understand the fascination with anime at all :confused:;
I like long hair out of sheer, unadulterated vanity.

I fit:
-I love animals (not cats though), I have rescue dogs
-I'm extremely left-wing (raised by hippies), I <3 taxes and social programs
-I eat oatmeal with flax every morning
-I'm a nerd, hardcore, science is my friend
-I'm an ex-goth who still owns a velvet opera coat
-I look almost exactly like Arwen from LOTR, I'm not kidding.
We looked so much alike when we were both younger that people at my high school used to ask me to sign magazines that she was on the cover of (I moved a lot, so they didn't already know me)

-I am a shamelessly vain fashion wh0re, and only wear skirts if they're mini or pencil skirts, and only with killer heels
-my dogs are both small and have coats that match mine
-despite my social conscience, I wear A LOT of diamond jewelry
-I hate all forms of outdoor sports, and couldn't be made to "hike" with a gun to my head, I have an elliptical machine in my living room instead so that I can watch trashy tv while exercising
-I despise fantasy literature
-I will likely get plastic surgery to restore my fabulous rack after having kids destroys my precious precious "chest gems"

I hear ya. I only follow the rules about clothes/appearance that are in sync with who I am, anyway. (And I like metal, too :) - but then, I also love Cyndi Lauper)

And I've let my NRA membership lapse only because it's not in our budget right now.

I follow few rules or customs about clothes or appearance.

I love metal music.

Ways I fit:
-I love long loose clothing in bright colors and tie-dye, especially skirts
-I love to walk barefoot
-I'm a vegetarian
-I'm a liberal, left-wing
-I prefer raw veggies to cooked ones
-I don't follow fashion
-I don't wear any makeup
-I love (crunchy) granola. I can't stand it mushy though, say, with milk added.
-I love hiking anywhere
-I love all animals, cats included

And I'm a crazy cat lady.

And I'm an 18th century reenactor (and I cross-dress in my time period so MY hair is definitely not covered, I rock a grenadier's queue with my bearskin :rockerdud: )

Spiritual and not religious (I prefer disorganized religion to organized religion any day)

Writer and poet (sorta)

I don't think I follow the stereotype. I have bsl length hair and plan on growing longer, I don't care for cats in my home but I like them, I love dogs especially Labradors, I consider myself a tough chic. I workout but I am a little overweight, I love scary movies and alternative music, but I also love classic rock, some classical music, and a tiny bit of country, so basically I like all types of music. I love working in my rose garden and I'm a tech geek. I love the latest gadgets especially computers and cell phones.

I also love LOTR, long flowing shirts and skirts (but I never wear skirts LOL), I love to read especially horror novels Stephen King is my favorite, and I love the Twilight book series (for some reason that's the hardest to admit LOL). I don't know where I fit in. I'm a loner even though I'm married. I know I frustrate my husband, but I'm not very big on being touchy feely, and I have a hard time showing my feelings until it all builds up then I kind of flip out, so I don't even know what type if stereotype I fit into LOL.

Vegetarian, earth loving, belly dancing, tree hugging gypsy woman here.

I do like to dress "formal" a lot of the time. High heels, pencil skirts, high waisted trousers, button down dress shirts, wrap dresses, etc. But I am much more comfortable in long skirts, tanks, maxi dresses and mocassins. I can't wait til its warm so I can wear my more comfy gypsy clothes!

I listen to nothing but world music and I have no idea what is mainstream music wise nowadays. I don't own a television. I read a lot of esoteric books like on crop circles, Hinduism, folk story collections, my favorite authors are Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung.

I sew my own bellydance costumes and am getting ready to figure out how to make maxi dresses. I save bottles of wine and put flowers in them. I make my own curtains out of scarves. I own more scarves and fabric scraps than anyone I've ever met, actually. I also make art and write poetry. DBF has long hair and a long beard! I also am becoming more and more introverted. I used to be a yoga instructor and still stretch a few times a week.

In some ways not. I am a bit of a "food snob" as DBF would say, and I am addicted to coffee and fried potatoes. I wear make up nearly every day. I dye my hair with chemical dye. I shop at Walmart. I own a microwave. I wouldn't get excited over a ren faire unless I was performing or something. I guess that is all for now. I'm sure I'm forgeting much.

Some native American although most people can't see it.
Avoider of fast foods
No sense of fashion trends (oh sign me up!)

I have four children, three cats, wear long skirts and dresses and earrings, love the moon and the stars and know Ah Elbereth Gilthoniel by heart, I eat müsli and granola and live in the middle of nowhere and listen to strange music and love medieval and Renaissance art (I teach it at university level). I'm absolute not modern in any way. No fast food. No fashion in the trendy sense, only in the "personal style" sense. Very spiritual and also increasingly religious. Emotional, a reader of books and tarot cards.

I think stereotypes are obnoxious when they are believed in uncritically, but highly diverting when played around with :-)

I'm pretty crunchy. I'm a bellydancer. I like fantasy novels and video games. I'm spiritual, but not religious. I'm about as liberal as you can get. I don't write, but I read like a madwoman, and I'm an AP English student with plans to pursue English in college (maybe) so it's not enough for me to just read... I have to analyze. I'm one of the Ren Fest crowd. I have four cats.

However.... I'm a teenager, I like to party, I like to dress fashionably, and I wear LOTS of makeup :)

I'm into creative self-expression. I see make-up, clothing, hair, as a way to paint my own canvas. Love dogs - cats, no so much (severely allergic). Will do anything, as long as it is legal, to save a tree. Grew up in the 60's, like to eat organic, wear flowy peasant blouses, patchwork jeans. Spend most of the winter in my chocolate brown UGG boots. Am into children's fiction/fantasy. Periodically reread CS Lewis, George MacDonald. Heavily identified with anything Celtic. Connect to folk music, celtic music, new age music, gregorian chant. Very spiritual and enjoy religious rituals as long as they are meaningful. Am drawn to past historical times - Rennaisance, American Revolution, WWII. Am personally conservative in how I live my own life, but believe in "Live and let live", and "Treat others how you want to be treated." Abhor violence and guns. Don't like fast speeds or high heights. Love my own children and all children. Paint, write music and poetry, play the piano, synthesizer and sing. Enjoy shiny metal technology in amongst the antiques and vintage stuff. Adore fashion, but choose my own style - won't be a fashion victim to live out someone else's vision of what women should look like. Used to be a ballet dancer for many years. Prefer to be outside, gardening, hiking, swimming in the ocean. Would rather do it myself and make my own mistakes than allow some "expert" to do the work for me.

Wow! I had no clue a lot of these things were "long hair stereotypes".

Where I live, long (as in waist-TB, rarely classic) hair is quite common; you're as likely to find it on a gum-cracking, huge-earringed urban teenager as a hippie earth mother. Maybe since long hair's not restricted to the counterculture around here, there are less stereotypes/assumptions about it.

I don't think I'm informed enough about the stereotypes to say if I fit them or not.

I did once have someone tell me I wasn't "feminine enough" to have long hair, so I guess I didn't fit that person's long hair stereotype!

Haha, I love this thread! I've thought quite a lot about long-hair stereotypes and must admit, it seems that often very long haired individuals share overlapping interests. (Note that I do not condone biases, but it is interesting to observe these issues. We must, however remain aware that such traits are not a rule.) That said, stereotypes I fit into:

-I love ancient history
-I used to be really interested in occult topics
-I continue to be fascinated by religion and spirituality and am, in fact, currently a graduate student in religion with a focus on ancient religions.
-I used to read fantasy and romance novels quite often. The latter were invariably "historical," usually medieval. I don't have much time because of school anymore, but these two types of books are still my guilty pleasures.
-On that note, am most definitely a bookworm. And I do love poetry.
-I do, indeed, love renaissance fairs.
-I love cats, but sadly am also unable to have one because of allergies
-I am learning archery (which relates to my love of ancient history/fantasy)
-sort of "crunchy" - I buy natural/organic hair products and read the ingredients on foods at the grocery store, where I refuse to buy products with more than the necessary ingredients.
-I'm not sure if these are long haired stereotypes, but I love art and jewelry.

Fun thread, not to be taken overly-seriously.

YES! Definitely second the world music/lack of knowledge of mainstream music...esoteric books/Jung traits. I do own a television, but NEVER turn it on - just use it for movies occasionally. And what movie will I be watching tonight? A documentary about an Indian yogi who supposedly is able to set himself on fire. And next, a documentary on Al-Ghazzali, the medieval Arab philosopher/mystic.

This is me, in a nutshell...as best I can do.

Spiritual, vegetarian, looking for some kind of vision quest, an artist and surreal film photographer/camera enthusiast, and somewhat of a neo-hippie.

I spent all of my time outside, in the trees, swimming, and on horseback :) I used to be called fey as a child, and my boyfriend still calls me that sometimes. I see strange things, my health is mostly terrible, I'm a good listener and a good 'therapist'. I don't like wearing shoes. I love gardens and birds and the way the sun looks in the late afternoon, when everything is golden. I think everything has a sound, and everything forms a melody and harmony, it all flows. When it's windy, I can't stop myself from running. I love to play music (didgeridoo, pennywhistle, and Jew's Harp)...but I'm not very good.

I'm in the process of an epiphany after a long period of very difficult times. I have a lot of scars and a lot of stories, and I want to meet people now that I've realized how intricate the smallest parts of life can be.

This is cracking me up! I fit just about every earth-mother longhair acoustic-guitar-hugging cat-hair-covered grateful-dead-following stereotype listed here... or have at some point in my life, anyway. Rather than reiterate, let me add:

- I've sung in both a madrigal choir and a Balkan-style one
- Bikers "of a certain age" can be relied on to give me the eye
- I'm thrilled when I can walk/bike/take public transport rather than drive
- I've had the nickname "Phoebe" at more than one job
- I'd much rather go camping for vacation than lounge by a pool at a resort

I'm adding to my list:

- I've been an exchange student overseas
- Not one, but TWO unworkable degrees - an AA in studio art, and a BA in Russian. Woot!

Wow, even though I don't have long hair yet, I sure do fit the stereotype. For the record I grabbed bits and pieces of what others have stated and added a few of my own:

I want a cat or three.

I don't really wear makeup

I watch very few R-rated films.

I recycle.

I adore all things Tolkien.

I don't follow current fashion.

I love sci-fi/fantasy.

I'm geeky.

I wear comfortable shoes.

“For the future i would be perfectly happy with my 12 cats, pet farm animals ( i think cows and goats are freakin adorable ), a acre or two of free land, a nice little house & barn, and my compost heap out in the boonies” - what she said except replace the cows with llamas, chickens, a couple ducks, and geese.

I like horses a lot.

I love country, folk, and culturally diverse music.

I love medieval/renn. fairs and I want to go to Sci-fi/fantasy conventions.

I have a relationship with Jesus but I don’t consider myself religious.

I dont "wash" my hair by conventional standards.

My dream vehicle is a beat up old red pickup truck.

I am fascinated by other long flow-y things, like skirts, Arwen-style sleeves (I did mention the Tolkien thing, right?)

I love all things medieval- on that note, I want to learn archery and swordfighting

I love all things Celtic

I'm totally into dragons, unicorns, griffins, and other mythical creatures.

I really like plants, especially long vining types

I dabble in various creative artsy things such as calligraphy

I love to bake

I don't get out of the house much.

I wouldn't mind being a librarian, I love reading and collect books.

I plan on growing my own organic garden.

I like to put flowers in my hair.

I want to get a celtic looking viney tattoo on my foot.

I enjoy writing fantasy fanfiction.

I've always wanted to live in the country, preferably in a Hobbit house.

I was homeschooled.

I rarely watch tv, though I love to watch movies (and yes, there is a difference).

I spend a lot of time in my own little fantasy world pretending I’m a jedi/elf/hobbit/fill-in-the-blank.
I play several musical instruments (but really only piano well) and I want to learn harp and cello.

I love Tea.

I am introverted and enjoy being by myself.

I love to walk barefoot- Hobbit Feet! (okay, minus the hair)

That's all I can think of at the moment. :p

I'm so stereotypical it's almost pathetic:

- <3 Cats :3
-Into all sorts of weird psychedelic stuff and music to go with that
-Love all sorts of fantasy
-I hate fashion
-I think even plants have feelings I even talk to them sometimes
-Yeah, and I do the whole enviromental lifestyle thing

I loathe the whole construct of "nonconformity" (because it really is a self-delusional construct, just look at this thread :lol:);

So if a person, who has every right to be entitled to their own opinion, wants to consider himself or herself a non-conformist, that person is "self-delusional" in your eyes?

I don't think that's what she meant but let's wait and see the reply..

I consider myself non-conformist as well. I do what I feel like (within reason) despite what others might think of it. I figure it's my life and if people don't like it, than too bad. To quote another LHC member who's name escapes me at the moment, "I'm not here to decorate your world."

When a person decides to be non-conformist or calls themself a non-conformist, they are conforming to the idea of non-conformity. Get it? :)

Also, the person who originally posted that is every bit as entitled to their own opinion as you are, even though their opinion disagrees with yours. There's no need to attack them for it, in fact that's pretty hypocritical.

Let me see about myself..

- I'm an introvert.

- I'm always very much fascinated by Gothic Architecture.. (But I'm not sure why..)

- I enjoy being alone.

- I'm always lurking/pacing to & fro in the dark corridors indoors; thinking/pondering..

I think I am the anti-long hair stereotype. Aside from having a cat, and being pretty into recycling, I don't fit into any of them. Maybe its because my hair isn't long enough yet. :p

We both are LOL

Waist length here - but no cat, and very fashion forward, and makeup is my favorite hobby. Sadly, not into earth-friendly anything aside from the fact that I recycle. Most comfortable in pants... I do, however, LOVE books! Classics. Currently reading Dickens' Bleak House. Reading down - introverts? Yeah, that too, sort of. Check! :)

I fit into a lot of the stereotypes - vegetarian, no interest in fashion (I regard anyone who doesn't wear jeans all the time with some suspicion), love animals (but not cats particularly), live in the country and have sheep who have names and personalities, even the car and the piano have names. I do believe in an afterlife, but I distrust the established churches and other forms of self appointed authority. I have seen and even touched a ghost and live in an area from where Tolkien drew some of his inspiration (I prefer C S Lewis as a writer) and believe in magic - the growth of plants and the first sunlight in the spring are both magical. Add to that classical music (favourite work the incredibly emotional Manfred Symphony). I could go on, but I'm sure that would do.

Finally - non conformity only becomes a conformity if one non conforms as a matter of principle. Real nonconformists will agree with things they believe are OK, even if the view coincides with a voice of authority.

Yep, I think this is totally true, bte. I also think these are the people who will not tell you they are nonconformists.

By the way, I love CS Lewis too. We have some of his original writings here at my school's library... it's pretty awesome. (And his handwriting is very nice!)

Cool! My house is haunted. I didn't really believe in ghosts until we moved here. She is quite mischievous. I think that we may have more than one ghost. None of us has been able to touch her and she doesn't manifest herself...but her father has in the past. The activity here has calmed down over the past couple of years though. I have only been really frightened about two or three times...funny thing is....there's no creepy music.

I'm a flautist, guitarist, pianist, and singer

I love crafting and creating

So, I guess I fit some stereotypes...

When I was 4 I was Diagnosed with Leukemia. While staying in the hospital, the girl I was sharing my room with passed on in the night and seemed to stay with me for a while.

I was never afraid. She was just a trickster, rustling the blinds, hiding the remote and putting it weird places, she would even throw things at my EX when I was mad at him. lol.

I never saw her, but my friend did. He said that there was a child at the end of our hallway one night when he came over and it freaked him out. lol.

- I'm an environmental engineering student. (Involves just as much math as other engineering disciplines, but as soon as someone hears the word "environmental", they think I must be a hippie/stoner/tree-hugger.)
- That said, I love the outdoors.
- I'm quite bookish and nerdy.
- I am a musician.
- I used to be a vegetarian.
- I used to have a nose piercing.
- Love cats (and dogs).
- I'm a college student who doesn't drink
- I'm addicted to coffee

I feel like I just described a hipster, but I'm pretty unique and I try to just dress/act however I want and do what I want.

I don't know where I fit in, but

I love horses, ride/train and work with them
I'm happy to be crazy cat lady (only have 2, but if I can money, would have more).
I'm a writer as well as a teacher
I'm crafty
I love writing long letters to my penpals (old fashioned way)
I love classical music/movie soundtrack music
I love nature
I must bathe daily because I love to be clean, but I try to give my hair a rest if it's not really gross. (no sweat or horsey slobber)
I don't follow fashion because I think it's stupid to be a carbon copy, but I do like to look at fashion magazines and try certain types of clothing.
Please god, no tie-dyed stuff for me! ;) :D

lol, it kind of sounds like stereotypes here fit everywhere under the sun (for instance, from religious, to not religious, folk music to country to heavy metal, etc.

for me:
I love to read, I read practically all the time, and our tiny apartment is filled to brim with books. I'm always trying to aquire more shelves for my books, but as soon as we get another shelf, a few days later, there are more books piled on the floor (freebies, library, borrowed from friends, retrieved from my huge libraries at my parents' houses.) I particularly love fantasy.
I love wearing long flowy skirts, usually long.
I am spiritual.
I am religious.
I am a future midwife, and current post partum doula.
I eat "weird" food (traditional foods based, no processed foods, not your "standard american diet")
I have a cat (seriously though, I was never a cat person, til this guy chose us. now, I'm crazy about my little carnivore.)
I'm learning about and interested in herbal medicine and other holistic medicine and don't trust allopathic medicine.
I'm sensual.
I love to dance.
I love nature.
I'm crafty.
I love gardening, ren faires, and medieval history (and other history).
I love folk music of all kinds, and folk dancing.
(and dancing in general).

i'm a bit crunchy, but that's because i have a dietary challenge that makes me really really aware of the things ieat - and the easiest way for me to find safe foods is to shop at natural food co-ops and it all sort of tumbles after, you know? you get your reusable shopping bags and buy non-phospate soap for your laundry (I use castile soap and baking soda!)

I admire horses from afar.

I don't mind cats, but I much prefer dogs. as for my own personal pets, I'm going to buy a snake sometime this year, a ball python. I don't think that's a long hair stereotype, is it?

I read a lot of fantasy, but I write science fiction and mysteries, but yes i do love books.

the folk music one - sure i like folk music, but it's not my genre of choice.

I've never been to a renfaire or a medieval faire either - and while I am aware of the SCA, i'm not a member.

my emotions and i have a weird relationship. heh!

I decided fashion was the refuge of the uncreative way back when i had *short* hair. I have very definite ideas of what i consider sartorail elegance, and I follow that. I'll steal from trends as they fit with me, and i've done this for decades.

I wash my hair when the time is right. i don't generate a lot of oil on my scalp, so this isn't all that often.

What a fun idea for a thred! Here are mine:

*I'm always thinking about what I can buy/make for my hair next

*I love kitties :D

*I'm somewhat shy and reserved IRL (just learning how to come out of my shell :) )

*I absolutely adore going to Ren Faires

*You could say I'm a nerd in every sense of the word :toothy:

*Addicted to video games (working on Zelda spirit tracks right now)

*I dance to my own beat

*I'm an avid knitter/crocheter/sewer and love crafting in general

*I like wearing flowy things wether it be skirts, tops or even bellbottoms

That being said, heres where I dont fit in:
*I love looking at and enjoying classic cars. I'm rebuilding my 1972 Plymouth Scamp by myself

*I hate reading

*I love techno/rave music and the styles of vibrant colored spiky hair

(I'll probably think of more...)

Stereotypes I fit:
*fond of animals
*companion animal is a cat
*strongly prefer public transit to automobiles
*the usual librarian stereotypes (constantly reading, usually prefer tea to coffee, often quiet)
*afashionable (some years I'm "in", some years I only buy what I need to replace necessary items)
*prefer to eat low on the food chain (even though I have a weakness for salty junk food)
*sci-fi and fantasy fan
*musician-ish (out of practice saxaphonist and guitarist)
*High School Latin geek back in the day
*music fan (favorite genre to play: jazz, favorite genre to listen to: blues, guilty pleasure: pop music that was big when I was in high school)
*very much into the idea of being creative/crafty, even if it doesn't always work out that way irl.

What might go against stereotype:
*athiest
*most definitely not the nurturing type (cat = exception)
*indoor person, through both circumstance and design
*living with an invisible disability
*enjoy going to a proper salon once every few months

To Treesandcoffee:

" I listen to nothing but world music and I have no idea what is mainstream music wise nowadays. I don't own a television. I read a lot of esoteric books like on crop circles, Hinduism, folk story collections, my favorite authors are Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung."

Hahaha! I just read Goddess in the Gospels by Margaret Starbird and reread Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda for the millionth time. Those documentaries sound fantastic.

Very interesting people we have here! :) Well I'll try to list what I think might fit.

- I'm a pescetarian, only because I love sushi so much (sorry fishies!).
- I am an artist, and also enjoy crocheting.
- I adore animals, more so than I love most people.
- I love long flowy skirts, though I don't wear them that often.
- I'm a complete nerd for all things fantasy, especially dragons, which I collect
- I'd love to go to a ren faire one day. We never seem to have any around.
- If I ever get married, I want it to be in an old castle. :p
- I love new age 'massage' music, also metal sometimes (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Opeth), and other world music.
- I'm a massage therapist
- I avoid all products tested on animals as much as I can, and also love shopping in organic/natural stores
- I hate watching most movies, even if they might be good. Same goes for tv unless it is Spongebob or something fun on the Food Network. :D
- I only shower/bathe as needed. No, I do not stink.
- I'm not a social person. I'd rather hang out with my fur babies most days. :)
- I'm into many things pagan, and adore nature.
- I too aspire to be the crazy cat lady when I get old. Except with pigs, bunnies, and other random little creatures. :D

I have only been really frightened about two or three times...funny thing is....there's no creepy music.

The ghost I used to see most often moved in and out of our house over a period of about ten years. The only trouble she caused was moving things and putting them back several weeks later. She never seemed threatening in any way, but one day I felt that she was troubled and said to her that although she was welcome to stay, she would find what she was seeking if she moved on to the next life, and we've not seen her again.

When I was 4 I was Diagnosed with Leukemia. While staying in the hospital, the girl I was sharing my room with passed on in the night and seemed to stay with me for a while.

That's very moving and also very interesting. Throwing things at an ex is a very useful attribute in a ghost. Contrary to many people's expectations, most ghosts aren't scary once you get to know them.

Yep, I think this is totally true, bte. I also think these are the people who will not tell you they are nonconformists.

By the way, I love CS Lewis too. We have some of his original writings here at my school's library... it's pretty awesome. (And his handwriting is very nice!)

Another CS Lewis fan - seeing his original writings must give a great sense of the man himself. Although it has to be said that the hair is longer in LOTR!

- I'm an introvert.
- I enjoy being alone.
- I enjoy classical music.
- I enjoy the park more at nighttime then daytime. Its more quiet and now with the snow all around its very fascinating to see the black/white colourlessness of your surrounding.
- I love metal and volk music
- I like classical instrumental music
- Kitties :inlove:

Hmmm...not sure I necessarily fit the 'stereotypes':

- I'm an extrovert;
- I don't own a cat (I'm away from home too much);
- I don't go to renaissance or medieval fairs;
- I don't consider myself to be alternative/gothic/faery/earthy;
- I like to experiment in my life in general.

Having that said:

- I value style above fashion and stick to my individual self;

but mostly:

- I'm a vain creature who simply likes to look her best! :p

Well, I fit a few.

I'm an liberal eco-hippie. I'm a vegetarian, and I recycle.

I love horses, and I have a cat. If I outlive my husband, I plan on being a cat lady.

I love to read, but I prefer classic and literary fiction to fantasy or romance. I read English Lit and history at university.

I like most kinds of music, but I prefer indie. However, my husband plays folk and bluegrass music.

I like history, but I've never been to a Ren or Medieval Faire.

I'm not religious or even that spiritual.

I'm extroverted, but I'm in touch with my emotions.

I actually like fashion and love to shop. I love finding quirky clothes that fit my fashion sense. I love to go to charity and vintage clothing shops.

I bathe daily and wash my hair every other day.

This is a very fun thread to read, but hard to reply to! I keep starting to type a list, then it gets out of hand and I delete everything LOL. It's so hard to summarize, I applaud everyone who has posted. We're all so diverse, which makes this a wonderfully interesting place to be.

At any rate, here's my go at it!

- I'm owned by 2 house rabbits.
- I love being outdoors. (Although I have a love/hate relationship with the sun. I love being in it, but hate that I burn within 15 minutes of being in direct sun.)
- I tend to prefer taking a natural/holistic approach to medicine. (But sadly, there are certain things I really must go to a doctor for.)
- I try to avoid or at least limit my intake of processed foods. (I've been vegan/vegetarian in the past, but it was for medical/health reasons. It didn't work, so I quit.)
- I'm fascinated with other cultures and religions.
- I love to read, especially classic literature.
- I love all things Tolkien.
- I'm creative; I knit, sew, bead, craft. etc. (Though I can't seem to figure out crochet beyond the simplest squares >.<; It's the thorn in my paw and a blow to my crafting ego...)
- I love many kinds of music, but have no real musical talents to speak of.
- I try to be environmentally conscious and I'd rather walk than drive.
- I'm Christian.
- I consider myself a Libertarian. (Though I've come to terms with the fact that it's Not Gonna Happen. I guess that means I become classified as a moderate Republican? Except I really don't care how other people live their lives as it's none of my business and that doesn't seem to fit in with the general idea of what = Republican.)
- I love guns.
- I bathe daily, and CO every 3-4 days.
- I'm very interested in the paranormal.
- I L~O~V~E makeup.
- I avoid soy whenever possible. (I fairly sure that I'm allergic...)
- I pay close attention to fashion, even if I don't follow every trend religiously. I pick and choose which styles/trends I want to incorporate into my wardrobe.

There's lots I'm leaving out but if I don't leave it at that, I'll ramble for pages and pages...

Fethenwen
February 15th, 2010, 11:23 AM
I don't think that's what she meant but let's wait and see the reply..

I consider myself non-conformist as well. I do what I feel like (within reason) despite what others might think of it. I figure it's my life and if people don't like it, than too bad. To quote another LHC member who's name escapes me at the moment, "I'm not here to decorate your world."
:applause

This is very tricky indeed. But I came down to this, I would rather call myself non-conformist than conformist. I'm not really sure what conformist means  but I guess I have a clue.

I might be a bit pathethic at times, because I'm so sucked in to this whole boho thing, but I can't help it! I just happen to love this stuff, and I find it funny if someone thinks my clothing is offensive :D Like I am quite sure some of my designer student friends think I look really untidy at times.

I don't think I really fit too many of these, but hey here goes!

-I DO love horses, and used to ride often, but now unfortunately don't have the funds to.
-I am a musician, I sing opera. Yes. Really.
-I like fashion, but I don't build my wardrobe around it, in fact, I prefer to find fashionable pieces I already own.
-I march to the beat of my own drum, and I am an extrovert.
-SORRY IN ADVANCE. I hate cats. I LOVE DOGS.
-I like make up sometimes. Sometimes I don't.
-I am spiritual, and identify myself as pagan.
-I could never live as a vegetarian.
-I loooove ren faires and everything medieval and renaissance related
-I love to read sci fi/fantasy/romance. I read like its my job.
-I love classical music (comes with the territory of being an opera singer hehe)
-I love to dance. My mother is Syrian and runs her own belly dance school in the basement of my house. (I usually won't admit it but I love Arabic music.)
-I am a college student who does not party.

Heidi, that's wonderful! :cheese:

I haven't read the entire thread, but I took the initial post to mean that OTHER people believed these stereotypes about longhairs.

For instance, I've been asked if I was active in protesting the Vietnam war; is my hair long because I'm a certain age, and so on. They seem to believe that we're a certain thing because of our hair.

These are all first impressions, of course. The funniest thing is that I AM a librarian, wear my hair in a bun, wear glasses and comfortable shoes, and dress like Annie Hall. Even though that's more a stereotype of librarians than longhairs, it's typical of how people see our hair.

Oh, lots of the other stuff is true: I'm cat crazy; needleworker; addicted gardener; nature lover; left wing; feminist, etc.

Highly interesting thread! Fantastic to learn something about everyone :)
I certainly don't fall into most of the typical stereotypes associated with long haired individuals, I'm a bit of a contradiction really, and I suppose here's why -

I don't claim a political party. I vote as my common sense dictates.
I love horses but I don't see them as pets, I train them. (Have even had to put one down once after it broke its front legs)
Nutty about motors - vintage and modern super cars.
I ride a bike - it has a large engine and is from 1944.
I do adore clothes and types of fashion.
I try to recycle but often forget.
My favorite foods are anything with meat and butter.
I adore classical music and every other style except pop and rap, and find jazz incredibly boring unless its live.
I think Nick Cave is a genius.
I don't have television but watch Top Gear religiously on my ipod.
I am remote in personality and have been told I'm "slightly insane, frustratingly unreadable and enigmatic" quite often.
Have quite dry humor - unless I'm with close friends, then I'm just wacky.
I speak 3 different languages.
I despise confined exercise, i.e. flailing away on a stationary bike in a gym.
Swimming in a lake or pond is my idea of good exercise.
I never give advice unless I'm asked to.
Love cats and dogs and fish and reptiles. Used to have a Boa named Bullet.
Can't think of anything much better than a day spent out-of-doors.
I am in the process of getting a private pilots license.
Favorite sports are Rugby and Polo.
I'm a miserable cook.
I intend to one day have an exceedingly large vegetable garden.
Travel, adventure and literature are my three great loves.

And I'm slightly shocked this post is so long!

MandyBeth
February 15th, 2010, 12:27 PM
I'm animal crazy in general, and viamently believe in rescue of all animals being done.

I'm liberal, tho very left leaning libertarian by nature - registered Democrat and I do vote!

I'm not shy about opening my mouth (or blabbing with my fingers) and don't believe in being reserved or not expressing my opinion.

I am deeply religious, tho' probably not what people think I am by appearence.

I think Nick Cave is a genius.

HEY!!!!!! Someone else who knows who Nick Cave is!!!!! Yes, absolute genius.

I do think he's more known outside of middle of nowhere US, but I don't know anyone IRL who has heard of him. Which is rather depressing as I don't know how people stand to miss such talent.

Stereotypical longhair stuff....hmmmm....I guess others would view my long hair as proof that I am....

an intellectual/academic
a medieval/Renaissance faire afficionado
old-fashioned
Classical music listening
folk music listening
dresses/skirts-wearing
horseback riding
cat-loving
bookish
shy
ballet dancing
nonconventional
odd
chocolate eating and tea drinking

And...they'd be right. But they probably would NOT guess that I

am known as the "energizer bunny" on certain nightclub floors... lol
know all the words to all the 80s songs you care to name
played rugby at an elite level for two years
can change my own oil and flat tires
can lay my own bathroom and kitchen tile down
speak seven languages
have two children and am a full-time teacher at a private school
can kill and pluck a chicken and catch, skin and debone a fish

Hence, I try never to judge a book by its cover, because I know I can't be categorized...lol that said, I have a lot in common with a lot of you about religion, politics, and social stuff. :) And DEFINITELY....about hair stuff!! :D

My brother introduced me to his music ages ago - truly a remarkable talent.

I'm the late introduction, it was a Leonard Cohen film/concert type thing on some channel and I saw him performing "Suzanne" and was just OMG, he's WONDERFUL......

So since then, well, if it's an addiction, it's at least not too bad for me...

Otherwise, I'm pretty much a metalhead - or any music other than whiny crap (most pop music and country music)

I have a strange love for music that is slightly mainstream but not really.

I love cars, bikes, anything that goes fast. I have no shame about racing on a track.

LOVE MMA, any level of it. I've gone a few rounds at a local level, but I'm better working someone's corner.

If it holds still, I will probably read it.

Hmmm, whatelse.....

Basic is I'm the product of my parents, raised to be independent and stubborn, very liberal from my mom's family, and tho' I have sisters, I'm closest in age to my brothers and am totally not a girly girl, tho' I don't mind being a lady if it's called for, and I do have fairly decent manners.

Oh, and I'm a princess and I have a tiara to prove it!

I am a conservative Republican
I like to live in the country, & walk in the woods

Speaking of Leonard Cohen...did you catch kd lang's rendition of Hallelujah on the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies?! What a song, and what a voice.

Here's where I may fit the long-hair stereotype:

- A 70s-lover, having been born during the summer of love
- I love classical guitar (need to start playing that again)
- A beach bum at heart
- I'm a skater chick (the blonde braids kind, not black short hair kind
- I have a need to draw hair (but real life constantly gets in the way)
- I'd rather fix health ailments with nutrition than meds
- I hate materialism and snobbery

And after reading some previous entries...
- Multilingual
- Definitely on the Left side of things.

Yes, but I think the best version she's done of that is from the Juno Awards. All I can say is WOW.

Actually, overall, I don't care who sings Leonard Cohen songs, I usually love the song.

Oh, I also like using nutrition for health benefits, but I can't live without my handful of pills repeatedly during the day.

Around here, it is the ones who are so conservative, they don't consider being called a fundamentalist to be a negative (and until here, I didn't realise it WAS negative, I just put it as a term for the very conservative). But, I'm in the midwest, land of cows and corn - so what my normal is may not be what anyone else has for normal.

I will say - even if I grow my hair to a "normal" long length, I'm still not going to fit in.

Okay, so which is more of a long-hair stereotype: liberal/hippie/new-age, or super-conservative/Christian?

I'm familiar with both long-hair stereotypes, maybe even as the most "popular" two, though I think it's only a few sects of conservative Christianity that enforce the literal interpretation of the Biblical passage dictating that women not cut their hair. In other words, if you asked any ten people on the street to describe the most likely hair style of a hippie or, say, a Pentecostal, maybe eight out of ten people would say "super long" in both cases.

I base my fashion sense on what does not itch
I only wear makeup for events
I braid my own hair often
I don't bathe every day (I wash my hair even less)
I only wear nail polish on my toes cause I regularly wear flip flops
(don't know if this counts) I am a dancer
My hair is all one length and never styled
And...
Most people have never heard of the stuff I use in my hair care routine!:D

I find it funny that extremely liberal groups and extremely conservative groups can have similar defining factors as far as stereotypes go. xD;

My mom used to say she'd gotten so liberal she'd circled back around to the other side:p. Which, actually, is pretty true, considering her political, religious and social ideas.

Reminds me of a poem by Robert Frost. I can't quote it verbatim, but it was something like "I never was a radical in my youth because I was so afraid of it turning me into a conservative when I was older"

In terms of the stereotypes I fit:

I listen to punk.

I'm a treehugger, canoe-tripper, I recycle, etc.

I'm a vegetarian.

I'm a poet and an arts student, and have opinions on T. S. Eliot. I also want to be an academic.

I play guitar.

I wear Birkenstocks and Doc Martens.

I'm Christian.

I bathe and wash my hair only every few days, and I use shampoo bars.

I'm a Tolkein/fantasy geek.

I'm a geek in general ;)

I'm so left-wing that at the age of 14 I reached the conclusion that communism would work if people weren't so greedy :p I've mellowed out some in my old age

Things I fit:
-I like cats
-I like the idea of local or handmade products vs. mass market products
-I'm idealistic and quirky
-I sometimes feel I was born in the wrong century

Things that don't fit:
-I like following current fashions (to some extent)
-Am not that introverted (though not necessarily particularly extroverted either)
-I have an analytical, practical side
-I'm neither crunchy nor conservative but basically pretty moderate
-I'm not personally interested in the extreme hair lengths

I think I fit several stereotypes.

- I listen to rock and metal
- I love cats and wolves
- I'm very interested in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, as well as Regency and Victorian England
- I should have been born in an earlier century, or at the very latest the early 20th century
- I love science fiction and fantasy (yay Tolkien)
- I love the outdoors
- I try to be eco-friendly/green
- I love to read (and write, too)
- I am not often fashionable
- I tend to be geeky
- I like home-made stuff
- I'm very introverted and shy

Communism would TOTALLY work if humans weren't beautiful, flawed individuals. :o But we'd have to be pod people, really, for the original basis of it to occur.

Yeah, I've realised now that it's not a bad thing that it wouldn't work, but I definitely see the appeal of it, particularly if you're in a society in which capitalism just doesn't work for the vast majority of the inhabitants, like the Victorian Britain in which Engels lived.

Interesting, I can't really see it, and I wonder if it because I didn't grow up in a country with the post-WWII legacy of USSR-hatred/fear. Hmm.

I was brought up by farily right wing parents, but for many years I have been a left winger (so far to the left that I advocate a top tax rate of 120%). I have seen a form on small scale communism work in a tiny community, but it falls apart when those involved cease to know the majority of the others in the scheme well enough to care about them.

I find it funny that extremely liberal groups and extremely conservative groups can have similar defining factors as far as stereotypes go. xD;

I find it true that they do...and also heartening. It means there really IS a baseline sameness...now if we can just get past ourselves and out of our own way, we might find that common ground and build from there.

I recently read a book called "Crunchy Conservatives" or something like that, and was struck by how alike the base idealogy was between that super right-wing Christian conservative group discussed in the book and my husband and I, who lie somewhere left of the spectrum. That gave me pause to think and hope for better in the future in terms of finding common ground and negotiating for the best for our children and children's children...it does appear in the end we have the same general idea of what we want, the argument is how to get there.

That's interesting, and it makes sense. People ultimately care about themselves and their friends/family more than nameless, faceless others. Even people who tend to support the rights of others and donate or campaign for it are going to make fewer sacrifices for the unknown people in Haiti than they would if it were their own families there.

I wonder if it would work to have many small, communist hamlets within one unified nation. If anyone ever decides to do an experiment like that, I'm in ;)

Stereotypes I think I fit:

I like pretty much all animals (including ones that would happily eat me) and we have 3 cats here (I think I must be a Crazy Cat Lady, I talk to them far far more than I talk to most people!).

I really dislike killing things (I'm talking slugs and bugs and stuff) and I end up carefully pulling slugs off plants in the garden and carrying them over to some bushes on moorland just over the road to my house!

I listen to Bob Dylan. Actually, I listen to a lot of different types of music, so I'm not sure how valid that is.

I wear long skirts (ankle length, usually).

Non-stereotypical stuff:

I'm a big fan of modern medicine. (It keeps me alive, for which I am sincerely thankful.) Also, I am vaccinated against almost everything.

I can't think of anything else at the moment!

Wow...this thread got large so fast! And no wonder, because it seems like so much fun. :D For the most part, it seems like I almost fit some of the common stereotypes, but don't quite get there.

I almost have the librarian stereotype - I wear glasses (bad experience with contacts...I refuse to go back!), have my hair up most of the time, and wear pencil skirts. However, my level of dress is always much more "corporate" and trendy. I do drink a fair amount of tea at my desk but I'm also a coffee and espresso FIEND! I like all of these beverages equally.

I'm almost a vegetarian/environmentalist. I will still sometimes buy leather shoes. I'm obsessive about recycling as much as possible, strive to buy pantry items in cardboard boxes and glass jars instead of items in metal cans, but haven't cut back my use of aluminum foil in grilling or roasting vegetables.

I almost fit most people's idea of an academic. I double-majored in biochemistry and physics. My minors were in literature and computer science. But I much prefer my science background to my literary one and any doctoral work will be in that arena.

I'm almost everyone's idea of the "reading nerd". I'm an avid reader and have a large personal library. Fantasy and science fiction have a large presence on my shelves. D&D, Vampire the Masquerade, and Shadowrun source books also have a section all to themselves. :D However, my books are predominantly non-fiction because I genuinely like it more.

I'm almost the writer stereotype! I have published articles in a magazine called The Atlantic Monthly. But part of me wishes that I was published in a chemistry journal instead, and I don't make an effort to get "in touch" with my creative my side daily.

I fit in some of them too:
I like metal (but not only);
I like 70's music;
I go around by bike (but I have a driver's licence);
I don't follow any fashion but my own;
I'm kind of a pacifist;

...I never wash myself, do drugs and live begging with a tie dye shirt and a dozen fancy necklaces - well, not really! Stereotypes carried me away with this one.

I'm a high healed boot skirt girl that is heading towards eccentric.

I paint, keep cats and eat pretty healthy.

I shop at Salvation Army and Macy's. ;) I have 3 pairs of reading glasses and two of them have lost their arms but I wear them anyway around the house and look wacky as they are crooked.

I have 3 kids and the neighbor kids too on many days. I love my red wine and Joni Mitchell. Actually I love all forms of music from African drumming to Classic rock. Any time a person is making music with passion I am turned on baby!

My family all think I am a bit nutty and my friends think I am kooky also. I am terribly romantic and love all things fairy tailish.

Um...I fail at stereotypes. I have too many pieces of various characters types that are perceived to be contradictory.

I'm a hopeless nerd, but I find most fiction books uninteresting (particularly fantasy and scifi) and couldn't think of a time period better than the one I'm living in now (except hopefully the future).

I like to dress in a roughly classic style--knee length skirts, collared shirts, vests and such, all neat and well fitted. It bugs me that now, wearing a dress and nice pumps, is something for special occasions while I want slip on an A line dress, heels and have a regular day. But beneath my somewhat conservative clothing I've got more than my share of discreet, but not inconsiderable tattoos and I spent two years stretching my lobes up to healthy little 2gs. I love them. I love my tattoos so much that it doesn't matter that I'm practically the only one that ever sees them, because I'm the only one that needs to see them. They're my little secret.

I guess the only long hair stereotype I kinda fit is musical. I like both folk music and metal, not a ton of either, but I definitely love some from each. Consequently I was over the moon when my favorite metal band put out an all acoustic album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SzsHOjnVMY&feature=related). I love it. Why isn't there more heavy acoustic music?

Oh dear, I don't fit many of the stereotypes. Is that why my hair won't grow?

On the plus side: I do have two cats and only purchase cosmetics that aren't animal tested. And I dance salsa, lot's of long haired girls out there.

So, in order to get longer hair should I not only change my hair care but also change my lifestyle?

(Running off to sew my own ankle long skirt, from wool I shaved off my very own sheep, whilst listening to celtic music)

I like you.

Leena7
February 19th, 2010, 09:54 AM
Huh, I really don't fit many.
I like fashion and makeup. I keep up with trends and follow them if I like them.
I don't like romance novels. I find many fantasy novels to be poorly written, but I like good ones.
I shower every single day.
I have never been into horses. They are pretty, but I am sort of afraid of them.
Nature is nice, but I do not like camping or anything like that. I like hiking and swimming though.
I'm not a vegetarian.
I went to public school.
I can't be spiritual without being religious. I'm not saying that it is wrong, but it doesn't work for me.
I'm moderate in my politics.

Cliches I follow, although I don't really see them as long hair cliches:
I like cats and all other animals.
I like to read.
I like history, but I don't see what that has to do with having long hair. I liked history even when I had a pixie cut. I am a history major actually.
I like LOTR.
I'm learning Irish, but that is more of a historical thing for reading texts.
I like folk music, but I like most other types, too.
I like to write.
I know what filk music is, but that was more of an accident...

I am a bookworm (but I mostly read non-fiction and pagan books)
I am a super girly girl (but not afraid to get dirty).

Hm.. I never considered myself to be a long hair stereotype, but reading some of these I see I fit a few:

- I'm a cat person. Through and through. I love me some kitties.
- I'm fascinated with things like holistic healing, folk remedies, etc.
- I practice yoga and have for nearly two years.
- I love wearing skirts and dresses, even though I tend to wear jeans just for ease during classes, everyday life, etc.
- I tend to follow my own fashion trends. Not outrageously unique, but things like bubble skirts confuse me.
- Some of my favorite chill music is instrumental Irish.
- And oooh do I love fantasy novels. Love love love!

I love Ren. Fest, dragons, Tolkien, C.S Lewis, vampires, red wine & NPR. I follow Christ and I love liturgy, candles, incense, hymns, stained glass, traditions and symbols. I am left of center. I recycle, keep a clean house, make my own yogurt, grow my own tomatoes and basil and love to cook. I believe in children and dogs underfoot. My favorite clothing includes denim skirts and a forest green wool cloak with a hood lined in black velvet. I believe in natural child birth, breastfeeding, cosleeping, & babywearing. I am very allergic to cats although we have one and she will probably live forever just to spite me.

You know, I really wonder about this part. It seems like a kind of chicken-and-egg thing--do you have more in common with your friends because they rub off on you, or are "compatible" people already more likely to be attracted to the same kinds of things to begin with? Or is friendship really just opportunity, people whose lives intersect? How much is personality and how much is shared "interest"? Is it chemical, like pheremones attract people? Or is there a subconscious simpatico, a kind of recognition of patterns of being?

The older I get, the less clear the distinctions are...

I'm not always sure what the stereotypes of a longhair are - such a diverse bunch here, which is how I like it- but some that may be seen as fitting the stereotype for me are:

Love skirts and dresses
Love reading and writing historical romance
Non-denominational Christian (house church)
Kitties = love
I make collage art, especially altered notebooks
Would love to attend a Renaissance/medieval fair, but they don't have them around here
Would being a pirate geek fit in here?
Very eclectic tastes in music
Have never LARPed but would be interested in trying

Possibly against type:

Love fashion and makeup and would prance about in designer dresses and four inch heels every day if I could

Not into science fiction or fantasy, though I was heavily into ST:TNG fandom for several years

I like TV

I am an extrovert

And a not sure where it goes bonus:

When recently asked how I would define my style, I did not have to hesistate before answering "elegant gothic bohemian pirate." :D

I like nature and I go to the animal shelter to walk the dogs (I would like to have one, but I don´t have the time)
I like natural cosmetic and I like organic grocery stores (the ones with cosmetics).

But:
I like make-up from MAC
I like internet and tv
I work in the field of conventional medicine.

Hmmm... seems that long hair stereotypes differ from place to place. Here are a few I fit:

-Lifelong animal lover (and equestrian!)
-Listen to classic rock music
-History buff and lover of antiques
-Intellectual, thinker
-Artistic, creative
-Deeply spiritual person
-Favorite genre of fiction is fantasy and some sci-fi as well
-Lifestyle choices include natural cosmetics, local/organic food, etc. (and I'm also a veggie)
-Enjoy spending quiet time alone and I'm somewhat introverted
-Prefer skirts to jeans or trousers

A note about style and such... a lot of people on here seem to think that paying attention to current fashion means that you have no personal style of your own. I disagree... there's a fine line between those who blindly follow every little trend that comes along and those who are inspired by contemporary fashion. I do read fashion magazines every once in a while, but also march to the beat of my own drum. I don't paying a ounce of attention to what's "in season" and I would never wear something I don't like just because it's considered cool... I do, however, get ideas from current fashions and follow trends that I particularly love.

Hi all. I'm new here and this is my first post :)

At the moment I have shoulder-length hair that I'd like to grow waist-length. My hair used to be below-the-hip length, once upon a time.

I don't think I fall into that many long-hair stereotypes. The ones I do are:

1. I love cats. And dogs. But mostly cats. And once I get my own place I will get a cat.
2. I love long, flowy, bohemian-type skirts. And sundresses. And flip flops.
3. I'm kind of a nerd.
4. I love books and can easily spend the entire weekend with no form of entertainment whatsoever other than my books.
5. I'm a bit introverted.
6. I'm not religious or spiritual but I am very fascinated with Wicca and paganism.
7. My dream is to move up to green, green Vermont. I live in Texas at the moment.

Some stuff about me that doesn't quite fit the stereotype:
1. I'm into video games.
2. I like makeup although I try to keep the look as natural looking as possible. And for special occasions only.
3. I don't follow trends but I like to keep up with the things I like.

I am a huge nerd.
I read for entertainment.
I love cats.
I like horses.
I wear tye-dye.
My fashion sense 'fails', so I don't really follow trends.
I'm introverted, or just not a people person.
I listen to metal ( all types of rock really).
I am artistic.
My favorite genre is fantansy.
I love all things ren faire-ish (and faeries or dragons)
I am religious.
I dislike shaving.
I don't wash my hair/bathe every day.

I guess it goes against stereotypes though that I love having brightly colored dyed hair and tons of piercings. And maybe that I love technology and video games.

This is a very interesting thread!

Hmm, let's see. I am very crafty- I knit and spin, I grow herbs, I am attracted to everything Celtic, I feel like I belong in a different century. I eat organic, use only natural beauty products, and am eco-friendly. I spend a lot of time in the woods, I have been called "crunchy granola". I think I fit in well here. :p

LucyHope
March 5th, 2010, 05:57 PM
I do:

- love history (but I'm not a history geek. That indicates a level of focus and detail I just can't raise.)
- wear a lot of skirts (but usually just below knee-length, rarely longer.)
- own a cat (but that's only because her owner died, & it was us or the SPCA needle.)
- occasionally do re-enactment/living history events (but I don't "live it" or feel "like I'm home" there)
- use almost exclusively natural beauty products (partly because of the nasty chemicals in standard products, mostly because my body has just rejected anything else)
- identify as 'pagan' for lack of a better term (but don't fit socially/idealogically in the usual pagan groups/circles)
- use/respect natural medicines, but also use/respect allopathics - they keep me alive. :)
- recycle, buy eco-friendly, etc. (but it's more of a waste-not, want-not, Depression Child mentality, rather than a crunchy earth-mama thing.)
- work in a shop which specialises in fairies, dragons, celtic jewellery, and items with a Celtic Nations theme. I hate fairies and dragons, and when customers start going on about their "celtic roots", I have to bite my lip and resist the urge to start lecturing them on ethnoarchaeology, Victorian "scholarship" myths, and The Realities Of DNA. :p
- eat a diet with very little processed food, and most of my junk food is home baked (but most of this is by necessity, not virtue.) I am not vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't:

- read much fantasy (what little I do read is low/urban, specifically Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint)
- particularly like animals (not against 'em, just not loveydovey about 'em, unless they can be eaten or earn their keep)
- like hippy, ethnic, or tribal looks. I grew up surrounded by hippies, bikers, and folk musicians, and the thought of wearing tie-dye or panne velvet makes me grind my teeth to a stress headache.
- feel like I was born "out of time". I like living without widespread disease, slavery, and the disenfranchisement of women. :p
- love LOTR (technically well-written books, entertaining films, but I don't love them, any more than I love War & Peace or Les Miserables. Put it this way: I've read the books, I've seen the films, no rush to do so again.)
- like heavy metal OR celtic/world/incense-&-crystal-shop music (I like country, swing, jazz, blues, easy listening, and classical. I will listen to folk/trad and pop when the mood takes me.)
- have much patience with New Agey stuff. I think there is a lot of magic out there, and that the spirit is a strong and wonderful thing, but so much of the New Age industry is just gossip and hype and misinformed cultural appropriation that I can't be bothered with the (no offense intended to anyone) "white light and rainbows" crowd. :undecided

Also:

- I bathe every day, and wash my hair every 2-3 days with shampoo & conditioner.
- I vote according to common sense and conscience, not any pre-prepared political agenda.
- I am spritual *and* religious (I don't see how to separate them and still actively practice any faith.)
- I wear makeup most days, and unless I'm tired or have other reasons not to, I wear pretty blouses, skirts, stockings, heels, and other girly (often vintage-inspired) paraphernalia. Even my jeans and t-shirts are classic and feminine.

So:

Given the large number of "buts", the "I don't" list, and all the disclaimers under "also", I'd say I fit very few long-hair stereotypes, or at best, only I fit them only partially. :)

No makeup.

Yay, cats!

I don't believe in organized religion.

Now that I think about it, I really think I'm a lot more "mainstream" than I thought I was.
actually, i know someone who doesnt like music.
He is in my core classes, and he's a little (or very) strange...
how could one not enjoy music??

I feed stray cats.

I wear Jeans all the time
I don't wear makeup
I eat very healthy
I recycle
I prefer books over TV

This is basically me except I don't feed stray cats. eat as healthy as I should or recycle as much as I should. Three things my sister who also aspires to be a longhair would like to kill me for. she fits more stereotypes than I do. but my hair is longer than hers so ha ha. shes actually even a vegan. who is majoring in "Treehugging" in college. Yeah shes way crunchier than me.

these are some things that might be considered long hair stereotypes(not sure) that I DO fit. I LOOOVVVEE Pink I am a total girly girl. I am VERY maternal. I am not into mainstream fashion but I am into quirky fashion. like abstract designed screen tees to go with the jeans I wear all the time, and very wild crazy sneakers. all kinds of crazy colors and designs. the wilder the better. it is a trend NOW but trust me I was wearing crazy stuff before and will be wearing it after. I also like purse's that are a bit nuts by other peoples standards.

I even still like wedge sneakers "spice girl" style and have one pair that I do wear sometimes I hope to find more! I don't care about trends and things like that. if I like something I am going to wear it regardless of what most of the people I come into contact with on a daily basis think. I have not used chemical in my hair since 2005. I wear it in the natural texture witch is not the "Norm" for an African American.
even though my sister is "crunchier" than me my job is working with children.(hence my maternalness) and my ideas on child rearing are pretty liberal and hippieish compared to most I know. ( alot of self weening. let the kid get off the pacifer when he/she wants to, things like that)

you can see from my siggie that I am religious.

I love cats AND dogs.
I like natural products.
I try to eat healthily but don't object to eating junk with DBF.
I read historical and fantasy fiction.
I play the piano, guitar, ukulele and harp.

I love clothes and fashion.
I love make up and am extremely vain and trend-conscious.
I only wear heels at least 5 1/2 inches high.
My choice of music ranges from celtic to power metal to hip hop.

I don't think having long hair makes one a "hippy"...where I live, tons of girls have very long hair, because it's quite trendy and attractive. Several Taiwanese and Japanese starlets have super long hair...and well, I want long hair because I love Chiaki Kuriyama's looooong hair with bangs.

tcheney91
March 28th, 2010, 10:16 PM
I don't really fit into many "typical" long hair qualities.
-I LOVE fashion. I hold my clothing dear to my heart, and my shoes are my babies. I also wear make up every day (although pretty minimal for class and day-to-day).
-I don't own a single really long skirt. None of mine go past my knees except the 2 trendy maxidresses I own.
-I listen to just about any kind of music, but prefer rock, alternative and punk.
-Yes, I do love cats. I have 3.
-I am a vegetarian, but not for "save the earth" reasons. I never liked meat, and I feel better when I don't eat it.
-I am not a hippie, nor will I ever probably be one. My stepmother is... and some practices rub off, but I can't claim to be an earth child.

Hmmm, lets see...

1. I have 2 cats and I talk to them like they're my children
2. I like flowers

That's about it. I guess that is why I always had short hair ... I need to fit more long haired stereotypes!

Oh I just thought of one more:

3. I like to read about herbalism and herbal medicine!

SimplyAmanda
March 29th, 2010, 08:03 AM
I wear skirts and dresses exclusively, all below the knee and most closer to the ankle or dragging the floor...

I dont wear makeup

I wash my hair maybe 3 times a week

I've been known to sew a skirt or two

I work in a 1830's living history museum in full costume

I graduated from a TINY one room school house (Valedictorian in a class of 2!!)

I make my own shampoo/conditioner, and tend to ramble on about it

But:

I really don't care much for cats. I've owned some cats, but they always acted more like puppies.

High heels make me happy

I shave my legs and wax my eyebrows compulsively!

alles_klars
March 29th, 2010, 10:31 AM
Hmm I don't really recognise those stereotypes for the people I know with long hair! And pretty much none of them apply to me...

I prefer dogs to cats.
I'm into fashion ... jeans must be skinny and skirts MUST be short - I'm tall, what can I say, if I wear a long skirt I look like a skirt moutain.
I wear light make-up most days.
I love love love literature but not into science fiction/fantasy at all. Sorry. Just don't get the appeal. Give me Nabokov or Joyce any day.
I don't shave my legs in the winter as I can't be bothered, but in the summer yup.
I don't wear heels for logistical reasons. a) I can't walk in them b) I don't like hitting my head on door frames. Ballet pumps FTW
I love music and music festivals, but doesn't everyone?
I don't identify with Celtic culture at all. Love Ireland an' all, especially Co. Cork where my grandmother used to live, but would find it a bit patronising to appropriate that culture. My roots are Anglo-Slavic, suits me fine. :)
I'm vegetarian for ecological reasons, and I recycle everything, but I wouldn't say I was a hippie.
But I am a liberal.

And I would never ever ever wear tie-dye after a tragic teeshirt I wore in the long hot summer of 1996.

I am your long lost long haired twin:D

LOL I'm incredibly entertained by this thread!

Isn't it awesome to be comfortable in one's own skin? Why did it take so many years for this to happen to me?

-Obviously have a love affair with long hair.
-Love reading. Always reading something.
-I love listening to the cello as well as the guitar.
-Have a passion for the Amish.
-I want to be a nobody living in the middle of nowhere with lots of land and animals.
-Do not wear make up. Do not wear jewelry.
-Love nature. Go green. Organic foods and such. However, I sure love the taste of fast food.
-Do not keep up with current fashion trends (so very nice to see many of you are the same!) I gravitate toward clearance racks like it's nobody's business, too. Never pay full price.
-I wear the same pairs of shoes for five years before chucking them and purchasing new ones. For the record, I own about 10 pairs only and that includes dress shoes, flip-flops, casual shoes, and running shoes COMBINED.
-Been journaling regularly since elementary school.

OK-

-I have 7 cats;
- love to read;
- work as a librarian (I have an MLS degree);
- love LOTR, Trek, Star Wars, etc, etc;
- very into history, ancient Egypt, genealogy;
- not real interested in fashion;
- prefer comfortable shoes to fashionable ones, but this may be affected by my shoe size- 5AAA- you try finding something really fashionable in that size;
- wear only a small amount of makeup, if I happen to think of it;
-bathe everyday (adore hot baths, and yes, I know they dry out the skin) and wash & condition hair about every 3 days;
-like granola, but don't eat it since the last time I did I cracked a tooth and had to get a crown on it;
- spiritual as opposed to religious;
- usually tend to vote the more liberal side (but willing to listen to the other side);
- love folk and classical music, but also like classic rock and Broadway musicals

Hmm this seems like fun.

- I am in a sorority
- I LOVE fashion
- I work at Twin Peaks and Victoria's Secret... obviously have no problems with showing skin.
- I'm a college student
- I have been dying my hair blonde since I was 12
- I am obsessed with long hair
- I love the Duggars for some really odd reason.
- HATE cats - had a bad experience with one when I was younger. I have a golden retriever and I've ridden horses all my life
- I'm a fiscal conservative
- I travel constantly. Since I started college I have been to England, Wales, Canada, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and just got back from Costa Rica. Not counting the places I've been inside the US
- I'm Catholic, went to an all-girls Catholic high school, and still go to mass weekly
- Never been to a medieval fair
- I have 7 piercings including my nipples. I have 1 tattoo which I have been getting removed for nearly a year now.
- LOVE to read - mostly historical novels

That sums it up, I suppose.

Love this. It is great to see I'm not the only one in the world with different interests.

I like to try to be more green.
But I drive an SUV and love to camp with my kids in my 30 foot trailer.
I'm 42 and have been widowed for the last six years, so I am already half way to being the crazy cat lady.
Always try to change too many things in my life at one time. In one week, I've done borax, baking soda, cwc, co--Hmmmm. Which one works the best? I have no idea.
I want to eat healthy, but fall way short (and wide)
Could care less about fashion. My goal is to wear the same dress to church every Sunday until it falls apart. (Hopefully not at church)
I'm both jeans and skirts kind of girl.
Favorite price to pay for an item of clothing: one dollar.
Love horses and had an Arabian mare.
Love to play the guitar.
Very little makeup - and that is very unconventional.
Love herbal teas.
Could not watch LOTR -- too gross.
I read non fiction.
Like to write and draw.
Trying to learn how to juggle.
If you drove through my neighborhood, you would know exactly which house was mine.
I collect three things: Trees, flowers and shaped cake pans.

I'm sure I'll think of more!

OK-

-I have 7 cats;
- love to read;
- work as a librarian (I have an MLS degree);
- love LOTR, Trek, Star Wars, etc, etc;
- very into history, ancient Egypt, genealogy;
- not real interested in fashion;
- prefer comfortable shoes to fashionable ones, but this may be affected by my shoe size- 5AAA- you try finding something really fashionable in that size;
- wear only a small amount of makeup, if I happen to think of it;
-bathe everyday (adore hot baths, and yes, I know they dry out the skin) and wash & condition hair about every 3 days;
-like granola, but don't eat it since the last time I did I cracked a tooth and had to get a crown on it;
- spiritual as opposed to religious;
- usually tend to vote the more liberal side (but willing to listen to the other side);
- love folk and classical music, but also like classic rock and Broadway musicals

We need to be friends! The library is MY place. I was THISCLOSE to getting my MA in library science (chose education field instead).
Love classical music, not into fashion, wear only comfortable clothing and shoes, and I only wear lipstick as make-up...

We differ here: SEVEN cats? Wow!

I worked in 2 different libraries for years, and still love to read. I love cats. I have pet rats, which seems to be an 'alternative' type of pet. I enjoy fantasy novels and sci-fi movies and tv shows. And the shoulder-length-haired boyfriend is a huge metal fan. :)

OK I am definitely a crunchy momma type... or an old hippie - take your pick!

I make jewelry and have made and sold jewelry and other crafts for over 25 years!

I've also had booths at ren fests and did that for years and still love ren fests and of course ren clothing - long skirts, handmade anything... and i usually wear long skirts and old t-shirts until they fall apart.

I was a vegetarian for about 20 years until I met my bf and now I have been eating meat for several years but still am confused as to how to buy and cook it. ;)

I can be extremely picky about where I spend my money. For example: I will not buy anything from a store that I don't like what they do with their money... and so mostly I go to a co-op to buy food.

I've always had my own business.

I love all animals. Right now I have 3 rats, and chihuahua and 2 cats. I've had horses, dogs, pigs, cows, goats, birds, and snakes in my life - always have had animals - usually several.

I love all music esp. folk and celtic music as well as classical and country and of course rock and roll.

I read a LOT and usually fiction but I also love non-fiction historical and romance and mystery and adore Anne Rice and Isaac Singer.

I only allow myself so much stuff at one time and I can be very anal about it. Right now I have like 5 pairs of shoes... and 3 pairs of boots and I'm thinking of getting rid of some... because mostly I go barefoot.

I cook EVERYTHING from scratch and I try and use organic ingredients of the highest quality.

I'm spiritual but have been somewhat of a pagan for most of my life. I also identify heavily with the Hindu religion and pray to Krishna and Ganesh and Shiva. I light candles too probably from my catholic housekeepers teaching me to do this :)

I research things too much on the internet :D

I'm also a geek - I take computers and laptops apart and fix them and build them and sell them and I love Linux.
