Long Hair Stereotypes--Which do you fit?

At the first, let me say this is not an examination of the validity or fairness of stereotypes, long hair or otherwise. It's meant in fun, and also because I think our collective results might be interesting.

So, long hair stereotypes that I fit:

I am most definitely a crunchy earth mama; I use words like cosmic and universal and collective often, and have considered living on a commune.

I love horses.

I have a great affinity for cats. I don't share my home with any only because I am allergic. (Though there is one who has set up an escort service under my house, but that is a thread for another day.)

I read fantasy fiction, and sometimes romance novels. In fact, I'm bookish in general.

I love folk music. Yep, especially acoustic guitar.

I dig Medieval and Renaissance fairs.

I am very spiritual (though not very religious).

I am seriously in touch with my emotions.

I don't stay in touch with current fashion trends.

I bathe less frequently than many other people (my hair, WAY less frequently).

Hmmm. That's all I can think of right now.

So which stereotypes do you fit? Please feel free to post contrasting ones. Lord knows there's no consistency in generalizations!

No offense to the OP, but I find any stereotypes to be insulting to say the least. I don't set out to fit into any kind of stereotypes, nor do I make a conscious effort to be "different" on purpose. I am me. I'm a individual with my own individual likes, dislikes, beliefs, and opinions, and over time I may even change my opinions. I choose to grow my hair long for one simple reason. Its who I am. I don't need any more justification than that.

Well since I know that this thread is meant as an ironic approach on stereotypes, I post mine:

-I have long hair (DUH!)
-I listen to metal and goth music (also to some EBM, but who is splitting hairs...)
-I ride a bike (does that make me an eco friendly hippie or just shows the fact, that I don't have a drivers license?)
- I'm calm most of the time and friendly to people

So I might be a "calm friendly hippie goth metal guy" with a bike.

PS: Oh yeah, and I like cats too. :-)

Ohhh this is so fun! I live in a pretty consrvative and rather old fashioned place so i stand out like a prickly pear in the amazon :p.

I am a total tree hugging, save the whales, redue/reuse/recycle, aminal rights, hippe chick :)

For the future i would be perfectly happy with my 12 cats, pet farm animals ( i think cows and goats are freakin adorable :p), a acre or two of free land, a nice little house & barn, and my compost heap out in the boonies :)

I don't have any cats nor read fantasy or science fiction. I like culture and history but I am not a Rerenaissance fan. I wear very simple, modern flattering clothes (mostly black). I don't qualify as a hippie. I don't like metal music...

However....
-I don't get out of the house much. My friends drive me nuts and I need to find real people who have an idea of fun that does not involve extreme quantities of alcohol (one would think these people are EASY to find... not in a college town!)
- I eat naturally (paleo, organic) and don't use conventional beauty products (make them myself)
- I wear vibram five fingers sometimes (google it)
-I like skirts and dresses but they are not out of fashion and are always short (I honestly don't wear them that often)
-I go without makeup frequently
-I am fairly athletic (skiing mostly)
-A lot of my jewelry is tribal-esque (feathers and and bone beads and shells... natural looking stuff)

I do consider my long hair part of my identity and I think it suits me, though.

I guess I'll elaborate further. I don't like stereotypes because you simply can't separate people into neat little boxes with labels on them.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, looking at all the long hair stereotypes that were mentioned on this thread, I see that I fit into absolutely none of them.

I live for fashion. Leather bags, watches, sunglasses, scarves, accessories are more important to me than food. I can spend my entire week's paycheck in just one day at Macy's.

I'm an omnivore. I'll eat anything, provided its edible and it tastes good. So that includes chicken, steak, cheeseburgers, eggs, pizza, but I'll also have tons of good fruits veggies and fish so its a well balanced diet.

I shower twice a day. I shower first thing in the morning, and also at night right before bed. I like being clean.

I'm not a musician. I love listening to music and have my favorite bands, but who doesn't? I certainly wouldn't count loving music as a longhaired stereotype since everyone, both longhaired and short haired loves some kind of music.

Now that I think about it, I really think I'm a lot more "mainstream" than I thought I was.

Here is my list. don't actually fit any stereotype except maybe a gothic, medieval, flower child.


1. I'm a lost flower child. (meaning i was born in the late sixties and never moved on much into modern times.)

2. Love folk music and Celtic music.

3. Romance novel reader extraordinaire! always carry a romance novel everywhere.

4. Love leggings, medieval chemise style blouses and flat shoes.

5. I'm a complete geek when it comes to fashion. (don't follow it much and rarely wear in fashion outfits.) unless medieval style clothes are in fashion.

6. I have a black thumb. (opposite to a green thumb, anything i plant dies.)

7. Love Vampire series and movies, medieval movies and anything that has Gerard Butler in it. :p

8. My hair is long and hoping it will get longer, (beg it every day to grow to knee length. )

9. Home schooled in Elementary and Boarding school as a teen.

10. Adore cats but allergic to them. Have a few dogs, but my baby is a Pomeranian/Chihuaha mix called Sookie, she lives in the house, sleeps in my bed and wakes me up with doggie kisses. and is completely spoiled rotten.

Just wondering what "crunchy" means. Other than the texture of granola I'm stumped!

I am a misfit with regards to these stereotypes and therefore a walking talking oxymoron as I am just a mixture of opposites and I think certain people have pointed out stereotypes are misleading. I agree, people try to box categorize me but I evade definition and I am sure I'm not the only one.

- I love academia, I am doing a part-time doctorate at Oxford
- I love to be a business type woman and working towards goals when not studying I am working hard on business projects

-I love the moon
- I love wearing all black but I'm definitely NOT a goth
- Paganism, celtic schmeltic etc= not for me, I prefer my own religion where I decide the rules, nonetheless I believe in a flow of energies.
- I love to be an alpha female
- I dont ever want to have children so mother earth stuff = veto
- I love looking after my house and being a home body
- I think sci fi futururistic movies that take an ideological slant are more interesting than historical movies
- I believe in organic natural beauty only

Wow, I really dont fit in to any of these... Well, I do love cats and other animals (more than humans actually). But other than that, I love my high heels, my nice clothes, my fake nails, my bling-bling jewelry and I hardly ever leave the house without makeup (just mascara and lipgloss but still makeup). I like taking things to bits, for UK peeps, the only TV show I will watch on a regular basis is Top Gear, but I don't watch TV much at all. Fast cars and fast military aeroplanes are good.
Right now I don't drive, but I'd love a motorbike.
I hate cats, but dogs and birds are fine.
I hate granola, lentils and chickpeas, they make me physically sick.
Long skirts are OK, but long dresses must have a pronounced waist and a tight fitting top otherwise I feel pregnant and I hate that.

I can use a chainsaw on trees and hedges, it's good and much quicker than using handtools. Having chainsawed the hedge to a good height I can then lay it. I don't like the way our hedges look when they've been flailed, or what the flail does to the plants.
I can build a drystone wall.
I grow my own vegetables.
I like cooking (same as I like making anything, inc knitting, crochet) and have been known to make my own bread on occasion.
We don't have Ren Fairs in the UK thank goodness, but the Viking re-enactors are good. Sadly, I'd have to wear long dresses and not fight.
I'll read anything as long as it isn't romantic fiction; having regular access to a university library with a supply of science journals would be great.
I prefer to be out in the country away from other people.
I morris dance, but I will only do Border morris, I don't like Cotswold or clog.
I play the flute, harp, violin, viola, Anglo-concertina, piano-accordion, guitar.

No offense to the OP, but I find any stereotypes to be insulting to say the least. I don't set out to fit into any kind of stereotypes, nor do I make a conscious effort to be "different" on purpose. I am me. I'm a individual with my own individual likes, dislikes, beliefs, and opinions, and over time I may even change my opinions. I choose to grow my hair long for one simple reason. Its who I am. I don't need any more justification than that.

I was thinking about what to post to this thread and realized my life is one big paradox...

-I love Jesus and talk to Him every day, even make my living in ministry, but no one would call me religious because I'm way too sensible to get that emotional about anything.
-I am very much into the arts scene and most of my friends are very accomplished artists, but I'm a metal head (don't tell my friends).
-I'm a metal head and I love Jesus. Never thought about that one before.
-I ride a motorcycle, but I'm not a stereotypical biker as you can already tell, I just love speed.
-I'm not into fashion at all. I would probably wear long skirts all the time, but I'm a guy and I'm not into cross-dressing.
-I'm not into organic or naturopath, I'm not a vegetarian or anything like that, but I tend to eat things close to their natural form, even cut my own meat, because it tastes better that way.
-I am a geek. I am an engineer that will build or fix anything, but I'm not a stereotypical geek because I do it for the art, not the science. That's probably why I have so many artist friends, because I can actually make their twisted ideas reality (sometimes).
-I don't read, I watch movies. But I watch to admire the cinematography and the creativity. I probably could not name 5 actors, or remember 3 plots. OK, I love sci-fi. The one exception to the that.

You know, I think my "thing" is just doing my thing in spite of what anybody else is doing, which I guess is really the stereotype we're talking about here.

This is a fun thread! I think it proves that there really ISN'T any such thing as a stereotype. We are all unique and individual. No two of us are alike. If we were, the world would be a boring place! :)

For myself:
I mainly like long hair because it is easy. You can wear it up or down; wavy or straight; and it is timeless. Long hair has been acceptable fashion since the beginning of human-kind.

I, too, love Jesus. He is my reason for being.
I love my family. Being with my children and grandchildren is what I enjoy most.
I love all animals, especially cats. I have rescued many animals over the years, from dogs to cats to turtles to rabbits. In fact, I am a rescuer by nature. I have two adopted children who had an awful life before we found each other. Just yesterday, I bought a sick and dying plant and am nursing it back to health.
I love to read, knit and walk in the outdoors. I love living in the country and am not a "city" person at all. I like simple living and quiet time.
I like classical, gospel and Bluegrass music.
I recycle and believe in keeping open space wild.
I love stories of the paranormal and loved ones who have passed on "visiting" those who love them.
I believe that what we experience here on this earth is just a tiny fraction of reality. I believe that much more will be made availabale to us once we leave our physical bodies.
I dress very simply. I prefer pants to skirts or dresses. I have casual slacks and dressy slacks. I wear shoes for comfort, not for fashion. I tend to buy several of an item in different colors, rather than create outfits.
I do have a handbag ******, which seems a contradiction to the above, I know. However, I buy them on ebay or in thrift shops, so I don't feel guilty.
I just try to live my life, treating others as I would want to be treated, and to try to please God.

This is a funny thread. I get told that I need to get out of the 19th century and join the 21st.(look at my username, do you think thats going to happen?). I live the life of a vegetarian, crazy dog lady in an antique house with a lot the modern "necessities" missing. I like every music from metal to gregorian chants but when I crank up the classical at work I get that knowing look from my customers. Makes me laugh. Once people know me a bit the fact that I tell them I'm growing my hair to my behind doesn't surprise them at all.

I've been all over the place, a consequence of living this long?
I came of age in the 60's being in the class of '65, graduating college in 1/1969. I was never a hippie though. My training was in oil painting and lived in Greenwich Village-grew up in NY. I always considered my self as an individual, chosing not to slavishly follow trends. But! I did get married moved out of the city when my oldest was 1 and had three more kids. Studied/practiced herbal medicine, had an organic garden before the invasion of the woodchucks and deer and bunnies. At one time we had six cats a cockatiel two gerbils and and iguana and hermit crab. Now just one 19 year old cat and a 4 year old pit bull. I was an environmental activist and now work for the the government (Welfare to Work) and am an elected official. I prefer to wear skirts, all lengths and wear anything from Naots to open toed spike heel platform shoes.

I was the type of mom who took her kids out of school to watch that total eclipse of the sun laying on our backs in the yard and had a song about everything in the universe. I made green and blue farina for the kids and made grilled cheese sandwiches in the shape of locomotives. I live in a purple and green 120 victorian cottage and drive a saab.

I love Erik Satie and Debussy and all Jazz. I like classical guitar and flute and violin- just about all music except hip hop and rap and whatever other newfangled stuff is out there.

As a fashion lover (but sane enough to never, ever want to work in the industry), I don't think long hair is unfashionable at all. Most models, in fact, have long hair. It's pretty and versatile, what's not to like?

But back to stereotypes:

I'm a classic city kid, I don't even have a driver's license. I ride a bike, walk, or take the train. I'm so eco-conscious. :D

I wear fashionable, but not trendy clothes. I shop at vintage and secondhand stores mostly. I wear heels frequently, but not too high.

I hate dresses and skirts, but I had to wear a uniform in high school, and may be scarred from that. I like my fitted jeans, thank you very much.

I do, however, love plants, and used to be a gardener. I love being outdoors and getting out of the city. I seriously love trees.

I don't wear makeup and make many of my own body/hair products.

I only shower once a week, but have to wash my hair every couple of days (don't worry, I smell very nice and do brush my teeth/take a sponge bath/wash my face daily).

I'm totally an academic. I was a major Latin nerd when I was younger.

I don't have a t.v. but the internet is a vice.

I'm a librarian, so yes, I read. A lot.

I have tattoos. Big ones.

I run marathons. In proper exercise gear.

I have bsl length hair and plan on growing longer, I don't care for cats in my home but I like them, I love dogs especially Labradors, I consider myself a tough chic. I workout but I am a little overweight, I love scary movies and alternative music, but I also love classic rock, some classical music, and a tiny bit of country, so basically I like all types of music. I love working in my rose garden and I'm a tech geek. I love the latest gadgets especially computers and cell phones.

I also love LOTR, long flowing shirts and skirts (but I never wear skirts LOL), I love to read especially horror novels Stephen King is my favorite, and I love the Twilight book series (for some reason that's the hardest to admit LOL). I don't know where I fit in. I'm a loner even though I'm married. I know I frustrate my husband, but I'm not very big on being touchy feely, and I have a hard time showing my feelings until it all builds up then I kind of flip out, so I don't even know what type if stereotype I fit into LOL.

I sew my own bellydance costumes and am getting ready to figure out how to make maxi dresses. I save bottles of wine and put flowers in them. I make my own curtains out of scarves. I own more scarves and fabric scraps than anyone I've ever met, actually. I also make art and write poetry. DBF has long hair and a long beard! I also am becoming more and more introverted. I used to be a yoga instructor and still stretch a few times a week.

Wow! I had no clue a lot of these things were "long hair stereotypes".

Where I live, long (as in waist-TB, rarely classic) hair is quite common; you're as likely to find it on a gum-cracking, huge-earringed urban teenager as a hippie earth mother. Maybe since long hair's not restricted to the counterculture around here, there are less stereotypes/assumptions about it.

I don't think I'm informed enough about the stereotypes to say if I fit them or not.

I did once have someone tell me I wasn't "feminine enough" to have long hair, so I guess I didn't fit that person's long hair stereotype! :shrug:

Haha, I love this thread! I've thought quite a lot about long-hair stereotypes and must admit, it seems that often very long haired individuals share overlapping interests. (Note that I do not condone biases, but it is interesting to observe these issues. We must, however remain aware that such traits are not a rule.) That said, stereotypes I fit into:

-I love ancient history
-I used to be really interested in occult topics
-I continue to be fascinated by religion and spirituality and am, in fact, currently a graduate student in religion with a focus on ancient religions.
-I used to read fantasy and romance novels quite often. The latter were invariably "historical," usually medieval. I don't have much time because of school anymore, but these two types of books are still my guilty pleasures.
-On that note, am most definitely a bookworm. And I do love poetry.
-I do, indeed, love renaissance fairs.
-I love cats, but sadly am also unable to have one because of allergies
-I am learning archery (which relates to my love of ancient history/fantasy)
-sort of "crunchy" - I buy natural/organic hair products and read the ingredients on foods at the grocery store, where I refuse to buy products with more than the necessary ingredients.

This is me, in a nutshell...as best I can do.

Spiritual, vegetarian, looking for some kind of vision quest, an artist and surreal film photographer/camera enthusiast, and somewhat of a neo-hippie.

I spent all of my time outside, in the trees, swimming, and on horseback :) I used to be called fey as a child, and my boyfriend still calls me that sometimes. I see strange things, my health is mostly terrible, I'm a good listener and a good 'therapist'. I don't like wearing shoes. I love gardens and birds and the way the sun looks in the late afternoon, when everything is golden. I think everything has a sound, and everything forms a melody and harmony, it all flows. When it's windy, I can't stop myself from running. I love to play music (didgeridoo, pennywhistle, and Jew's Harp)...but I'm not very good.

I'm in the process of an epiphany after a long period of very difficult times. I have a lot of scars and a lot of stories, and I want to meet people now that I've realized how intricate the smallest parts of life can be.

I fit into a lot of the stereotypes - vegetarian, no interest in fashion (I regard anyone who doesn't wear jeans all the time with some suspicion), love animals (but not cats particularly), live in the country and have sheep who have names and personalities, even the car and the piano have names. I do believe in an afterlife, but I distrust the established churches and other forms of self appointed authority. I have seen and even touched a ghost and live in an area from where Tolkien drew some of his inspiration (I prefer C S Lewis as a writer) and believe in magic - the growth of plants and the first sunlight in the spring are both magical. Add to that classical music (favourite work the incredibly emotional Manfred Symphony). I could go on, but I'm sure that would do.

Finally - non conformity only becomes a conformity if one non conforms as a matter of principle. Real nonconformists will agree with things they believe are OK, even if the view coincides with a voice of authority.

I'm always trying to aquire more shelves for my books, but as soon as we get another shelf, a few days later, there are more books piled on the floor (freebies, library, borrowed from friends, retrieved from my huge libraries at my parents' houses.) i'm a bit crunchy, but that's because i have a dietary challenge that makes me really really aware of the things ieat - and the easiest way for me to find safe foods is to shop at natural food co-ops and it all sort of tumbles after, you know? you get your reusable shopping bags and buy non-phospate soap for your laundry (I use castile soap and baking soda!)

I admire horses from afar.

I don't mind cats, but I much prefer dogs. as for my own personal pets, I'm going to buy a snake sometime this year, a ball python. I don't think that's a long hair stereotype, is it?

I read a lot of fantasy, but I write science fiction and mysteries, but yes i do love books.

YES! Definitely second the world music/lack of knowledge of mainstream music...esoteric books/Jung traits. I do own a television, but NEVER turn it on - just use it for movies occasionally. And what movie will I be watching tonight? A documentary about an Indian yogi who supposedly is able to set himself on fire. And next, a documentary on Al-Ghazzali, the medieval Arab philosopher/mystic.

Hahaha! I just read Goddess in the Gospels by Margaret Starbird and reread Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda for the millionth time. Those documentaries sound fantastic.

Cool! My house is haunted. I didn't really believe in ghosts until we moved here. She is quite mischievous. I think that we may have more than one ghost. None of us has been able to touch her and she doesn't manifest herself...but her father has in the past. The activity here has calmed down over the past couple of years though. I have only been really frightened about two or three times...funny thing is....there's no creepy music.

The ghost I used to see most often moved in and out of our house over a period of about ten years. The only trouble she caused was moving things and putting them back several weeks later. She never seemed threatening in any way, but one day I felt that she was troubled and said to her that although she was welcome to stay, she would find what she was seeking if she moved on to the next life, and we've not seen her again.



When I was 4 I was Diagnosed with Leukemia. While staying in the hospital, the girl I was sharing my room with passed on in the night and seemed to stay with me for a while.

I was never afraid. She was just a trickster, rustling the blinds, hiding the remote and putting it weird places, she would even throw things at my EX when I was mad at him. lol.

I never saw her, but my friend did. He said that there was a child at the end of our hallway one night when he came over and it freaked him out. lol.

That's very moving and also very interesting. Throwing things at an ex is a very useful attribute in a ghost. Contrary to many people's expectations, most ghosts aren't scary once you get to know them.

This is a very fun thread to read, but hard to reply to! I keep starting to type a list, then it gets out of hand and I delete everything LOL. It's so hard to summarize, I applaud everyone who has posted. We're all so diverse, which makes this a wonderfully interesting place to be.

This is very tricky indeed. But I came down to this, I would rather call myself non-conformist than conformist. I'm not really sure what conformist means :confused: but I guess I have a clue.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I took the initial post to mean that OTHER people believed these stereotypes about longhairs.

For instance, I've been asked if I was active in protesting the Vietnam war; is my hair long because I'm a certain age, and so on. They seem to believe that we're a certain thing because of our hair.

These are all first impressions, of course. The funniest thing is that I AM a librarian, wear my hair in a bun, wear glasses and comfortable shoes, and dress like Annie Hall. Even though that's more a stereotype of librarians than longhairs, it's typical of how people see our hair.

Oh, lots of the other stuff is true: I'm cat crazy; needleworker; addicted gardener; nature lover; left wing; feminist, etc.

I certainly don't fall into most of the typical stereotypes associated with long haired individuals, I'm a bit of a contradiction really, and I suppose here's why -

I don't claim a political party. I vote as my common sense dictates.
I love horses but I don't see them as pets, I train them. (Have even had to put one down once after it broke its front legs)
Nutty about motors - vintage and modern super cars.
I ride a bike - it has a large engine and is from 1944.
I do adore clothes and types of fashion.
I try to recycle but often forget.
My favorite foods are anything with meat and butter.
I adore classical music and every other style except pop and rap, and find jazz incredibly boring unless its live.
I think Nick Cave is a genius.
I don't have television but watch Top Gear religiously on my ipod.

I'm familiar with both long-hair stereotypes, maybe even as the most "popular" two, though I think it's only a few sects of conservative Christianity that enforce the literal interpretation of the Biblical passage dictating that women not cut their hair. In other words, if you asked any ten people on the street to describe the most likely hair style of a hippie or, say, a Pentecostal, maybe eight out of ten people would say "super long" in both cases.

I find it true that they do...and also heartening. It means there really IS a baseline sameness...now if we can just get past ourselves and out of our own way, we might find that common ground and build from there.

I recently read a book called "Crunchy Conservatives" or something like that, and was struck by how alike the base idealogy was between that super right-wing Christian conservative group discussed in the book and my husband and I, who lie somewhere left of the spectrum. That gave me pause to think and hope for better in the future in terms of finding common ground and negotiating for the best for our children and children's children...it does appear in the end we have the same general idea of what we want, the argument is how to get there.

Stereotypes I think I fit:

I like pretty much all animals (including ones that would happily eat me) and we have 3 cats here (I think I must be a Crazy Cat Lady, I talk to them far far more than I talk to most people!).

I really dislike killing things (I'm talking slugs and bugs and stuff) and I end up carefully pulling slugs off plants in the garden and carrying them over to some bushes on moorland just over the road to my house!

I listen to Bob Dylan. Actually, I listen to a lot of different types of music, so I'm not sure how valid that is.

Wow...this thread got large so fast! And no wonder, because it seems like so much fun. :D For the most part, it seems like I almost fit some of the common stereotypes, but don't quite get there.


I almost have the librarian stereotype - I wear glasses (bad experience with contacts...I refuse to go back!), have my hair up most of the time, and wear pencil skirts. However, my level of dress is always much more "corporate" and trendy. I do drink a fair amount of tea at my desk but I'm also a coffee and espresso FIEND! I like all of these beverages equally.

I'm almost a vegetarian/environmentalist. I will still sometimes buy leather shoes. I'm obsessive about recycling as much as possible, strive to buy pantry items in cardboard boxes and glass jars instead of items in metal cans, but haven't cut back my use of aluminum foil in grilling or roasting vegetables.

I almost fit most people's idea of an academic. I double-majored in biochemistry and physics. My minors were in literature and computer science. But I much prefer my science background to my literary one and any doctoral work will be in that arena.

I'm almost everyone's idea of the "reading nerd". I'm an avid reader and have a large personal library. Fantasy and science fiction have a large presence on my shelves. D&D, Vampire the Masquerade, and Shadowrun source books also have a section all to themselves. :D However, my books are predominantly non-fiction because I genuinely like it more.

I'm almost the writer stereotype! I have published articles in a magazine called The Atlantic Monthly. But part of me wishes that I was published in a chemistry journal instead, and I don't make an effort to get "in touch" with my creative my side daily.

Um...I fail at stereotypes. I have too many pieces of various characters types that are perceived to be contradictory.

I'm a hopeless nerd, but I find most fiction books uninteresting (particularly fantasy and scifi) and couldn't think of a time period better than the one I'm living in now (except hopefully the future).

I like to dress in a roughly classic style--knee length skirts, collared shirts, vests and such, all neat and well fitted. It bugs me that now, wearing a dress and nice pumps, is something for special occasions while I want slip on an A line dress, heels and have a regular day. But beneath my somewhat conservative clothing I've got more than my share of discreet, but not inconsiderable tattoos and I spent two years stretching my lobes up to healthy little 2gs. I love them. I love my tattoos so much that it doesn't matter that I'm practically the only one that ever sees them, because I'm the only one that needs to see them. They're my little secret.

I guess the only long hair stereotype I kinda fit is musical. I like both folk music and metal, not a ton of either, but I definitely love some from each. Consequently I was over the moon when my favorite metal band put out an all acoustic album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SzsHOjnVMY&feature=related). I love it. Why isn't there more heavy acoustic music?

I certainly don't fall into most of the typical stereotypes associated with long haired individuals, I'm a bit of a contradiction really, and I suppose here's why -

I don't claim a political party. I vote as my common sense dictates.
I love horses but I don't see them as pets, I train them. (Have even had to put one down once after it broke its front legs)
Nutty about motors - vintage and modern super cars.
I ride a bike - it has a large engine and is from 1944.
I do adore clothes and types of fashion.
I try to recycle but often forget.
My favorite foods are anything with meat and butter.
I adore classical music and every other style except pop and rap, and find jazz incredibly boring unless its live.
I think Nick Cave is a genius.
I don't have television but watch Top Gear religiously on my ipod.
I am remote in personality and have been told I'm "slightly insane, frustratingly unreadable and enigmatic" quite often.
Have quite dry humor - unless I'm with close friends, then I'm just wacky.
I speak 3 different languages.
I despise confined exercise, i.e. flailing away on a stationary bike in a gym.
Swimming in a lake or pond is my idea of good exercise.
I never give advice unless I'm asked to.
Love cats and dogs and fish and reptiles. Used to have a Boa named Bullet.
Can't think of anything much better than a day spent out-of-doors.

You know, I really wonder about this part. It seems like a kind of chicken-and-egg thing--do you have more in common with your friends because they rub off on you, or are "compatible" people already more likely to be attracted to the same kinds of things to begin with? Or is friendship really just opportunity, people whose lives intersect? How much is personality and how much is shared "interest"? Is it chemical, like pheremones attract people? A note about style and such... a lot of people on here seem to think that paying attention to current fashion means that you have no personal style of your own. I disagree... there's a fine line between those who blindly follow every little trend that comes along and those who are inspired by contemporary fashion. I do read fashion magazines every once in a while, but also march to the beat of my own drum. I don't paying a ounce of attention to what's "in season" and I would never wear something I don't like just because it's considered cool... I do, however, get ideas from current fashions and follow trends that I particularly love.

At the moment I have shoulder-length hair that I'd like to grow waist-length. My hair used to be below-the-hip length, once upon a time.

I don't think I fall into that many long-hair stereotypes. The ones I do are:

1. I love cats. And dogs. But mostly cats. And once I get my own place I will get a cat.

Hmm, let's see. I am very crafty- I knit and spin, I grow herbs, I am attracted to everything Celtic, I feel like I belong in a different century. I eat organic, use only natural beauty products, and am eco-friendly. I spend a lot of time in the woods, I have been called "crunchy granola". I think I fit in well here. :p

I do:

- love history (but I'm not a history geek. That indicates a level of focus and detail I just can't raise.)
- wear a lot of skirts (but usually just below knee-length, rarely longer.)
- own a cat (but that's only because her owner died, & it was us or the SPCA needle.)
- occasionally do re-enactment/living history events (but I don't "live it" or feel "like I'm home" there)
- use almost exclusively natural beauty products (partly because of the nasty chemicals in standard products, mostly because my body has just rejected anything else)
- identify as 'pagan' for lack of a better term (but don't fit socially/idealogically in the usual pagan groups/circles)
- use/respect natural medicines, but also use/respect allopathics - they keep me alive. :)
- recycle, buy eco-friendly, etc. (but it's more of a waste-not, want-not, Depression Child mentality, rather than a crunchy earth-mama thing.)
- work in a shop which specialises in fairies, dragons, celtic jewellery, and items with a Celtic Nations theme. I hate fairies and dragons, and when customers start going on about their "celtic roots", I have to bite my lip and resist the urge to start lecturing them on ethnoarchaeology, Victorian "scholarship" myths, and The Realities Of DNA. :p
- eat a diet with very little processed food, and most of my junk food is home baked (but most of this is by necessity, not virtue.) I am not vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't:

- read much fantasy (what little I do read is low/urban, specifically Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint)
- particularly like animals (not against 'em, just not loveydovey about 'em, unless they can be eaten or earn their keep)
- like hippy, ethnic, or tribal looks. I grew up surrounded by hippies, bikers, and folk musicians, and the thought of wearing tie-dye or panne velvet makes me grind my teeth to a stress headache.
- feel like I was born "out of time". I like living without widespread disease, slavery, and the disenfranchisement of women. :p
- love LOTR (technically well-written books, entertaining films, but I don't love them, any more than I love War & Peace or Les Miserables. Put it this way: I've read the books, I've seen the films, no rush to do so again.)
- like heavy metal OR celtic/world/incense-&-crystal-shop music (I like country, swing, jazz, blues, easy listening, and classical. I will listen to folk/trad and pop when the mood takes me.)
- have much patience with New Agey stuff. I think there is a lot of magic out there, and that the spirit is a strong and wonderful thing, but so much of the New Age industry is just gossip and hype and misinformed cultural appropriation that I can't be bothered with the (no offense intended to anyone) "white light and rainbows" crowd. :undecided

Also:

- I bathe every day, and wash my hair every 2-3 days with shampoo & conditioner.
- I vote according to common sense and conscience, not any pre-prepared political agenda.
- I am spritual *and* religious (I don't see how to separate them and still actively practice any faith.)
- I wear makeup most days, and unless I'm tired or have other reasons not to, I wear pretty blouses, skirts, stockings, heels, and other girly (often vintage-inspired) paraphernalia. Even my jeans and t-shirts are classic and feminine.

So:

Given the large number of "buts", the "I don't" list, and all the disclaimers under "also", I'd say I fit very few long-hair stereotypes, or at best, only I fit them only partially. :)

I guess I'll elaborate further. I don't like stereotypes because you simply can't separate people into neat little boxes with labels on them.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, looking at all the long hair stereotypes that were mentioned on this thread, I see that I fit into absolutely none of them.

I live for fashion. Leather bags, watches, sunglasses, scarves, accessories are more important to me than food. I can spend my entire week's paycheck in just one day at Macy's.

I'm an omnivore. I'll eat anything, provided its edible and it tastes good. So that includes chicken, steak, cheeseburgers, eggs, pizza, but I'll also have tons of good fruits veggies and fish so its a well balanced diet.

I shower twice a day. I shower first thing in the morning, and also at night right before bed. I like being clean.

I'm not a musician. I love listening to music and have my favorite bands, but who doesn't? I certainly wouldn't count loving music as a longhaired stereotype since everyone, both longhaired and short haired loves some kind of music.

Now that I think about it, I really think I'm a lot more "mainstream" than I thought I was.

This is basically me except I don't feed stray cats. eat as healthy as I should or recycle as much as I should. Three things my sister who also aspires to be a longhair would like to kill me for. she fits more stereotypes than I do. but my hair is longer than hers so ha ha. shes actually even a vegan. who is majoring in "Treehugging" in college. Yeah shes way crunchier than me.

these are some things that might be considered long hair stereotypes(not sure) that I DO fit. I LOOOVVVEE Pink I am a total girly girl. I am VERY maternal. I am not into mainstream fashion but I am into quirky fashion. like abstract designed screen tees to go with the jeans I wear all the time, and very wild crazy sneakers. all kinds of crazy colors and designs. the wilder the better. it is a trend NOW but trust me I was wearing crazy stuff before and will be wearing it after. I also like purse's that are a bit nuts by other peoples standards.

I even still like wedge sneakers "spice girl" style and have one pair that I do wear sometimes I hope to find more! I don't care about trends and things like that. if I like something I am going to wear it regardless of what most of the people I come into contact with on a daily basis think. I have not used chemical in my hair since 2005. I wear it in the natural texture witch is not the "Norm" for an African American.
even though my sister is "crunchier" than me my job is working with children.(hence my maternalness) and my ideas on child rearing are pretty liberal and hippieish compared to most I know. ( alot of self weening. let the kid get off the pacifer when he/she wants to, things like that)

-I LOVE fashion. I hold my clothing dear to my heart, and my shoes are my babies. I also wear make up every day (although pretty minimal for class and day-to-day).

At the first, let me say this is not an examination of the validity or fairness of stereotypes, long hair or otherwise. It's meant in fun, and also because I think our collective results might be interesting.

So, long hair stereotypes that I fit:

I am most definitely a crunchy earth mama; I use words like cosmic and universal and collective often, and have considered living on a commune.

I love horses.

I have a great affinity for cats. I don't share my home with any only because I am allergic. (Though there is one who has set up an escort service under my house, but that is a thread for another day.)

I read fantasy fiction, and sometimes romance novels. In fact, I'm bookish in general.

I love folk music. Yep, especially acoustic guitar.

I dig Medieval and Renaissance fairs.

I am very spiritual (though not very religious).

I am seriously in touch with my emotions.

I don't stay in touch with current fashion trends.

I bathe less frequently than many other people (my hair, WAY less frequently).

Hmmm. That's all I can think of right now.

Isn't it awesome to be comfortable in one's own skin? Why did it take so many years for this to happen to me?

I make jewelry and have made and sold jewelry and other crafts for over 25 years!

I've also had booths at ren fests and did that for years and still love ren fests and of course ren clothing - long skirts, handmade anything... and i usually wear long skirts and old t-shirts until they fall apart.

I was a vegetarian for about 20 years until I met my bf and now I have been eating meat for several years but still am confused as to how to buy and cook it. ;)

I can be extremely picky about where I spend my money. For example: I will not buy anything from a store that I don't like what they do with their money... and so mostly I go to a co-op to buy food.

I've always had my own business.

I love all animals. Right now I have 3 rats, and chihuahua and 2 cats. I've had horses, dogs, pigs, cows, goats, birds, and snakes in my life - always have had animals - usually several.

I read a LOT and usually fiction but I also love non-fiction historical and romance and mystery and adore Anne Rice and Isaac Singer.

I only allow myself so much stuff at one time and I can be very anal about it. Right now I have like 5 pairs of shoes... and 3 pairs of boots and I'm thinking of getting rid of some... because mostly I go barefoot.

I cook EVERYTHING from scratch and I try and use organic ingredients of the highest quality.

I'm spiritual but have been somewhat of a pagan for most of my life. I also identify heavily with the Hindu religion and pray to Krishna and Ganesh and Shiva. I light candles too probably from my catholic housekeepers teaching me to do this :)

I research things too much on the internet :D

I'm also a geek - I take computers and laptops apart and fix them and build them and sell them and I love Linux.
