View Full Version : why isn't it growing?!

It's been months and months since my last trim; I think the last trim I got was in October, because my hair kept splitting and the ends were far from neat. It was a tiny trim too, barely anything got taken off...just enough to straighten things up. I checked the back of my head in the mirror the other day, and I swear my hair has grown down maybe...3/4 inch since then. The front is a bit longer, the longest pieces reach my chin (barely). However, the long bits were nearly touching my chin a month or so ago, so it seems that I haven't gotten much growth at all.
I can't think of why this is happening- I eat a healthy diet (probably not enough, but when my medical issues calm down and let me eat, I try my best to be healthy!), I get regular exercise, I take a multivitamin. I'm trying to be patient but it's distressing when I don't see much progress :( especially considering that all I want, for now, is hair long enough to tie back....just down to my shoulders! I just need another...4 or 5 stubborn inches! Does anyone know why I'm suddenly experiencing slow growth? My hair used to grow like a weed...

I'm not an expert, and have been going through the same thing as you, but i guess it could be a stall phase? some people have it at many stages in growing. can you share your routine? give a bit more info on care and product use? could be breakage? or some after effects from any meds?

Just be patient, ignore it and by the time you realize it your hair will be touching your shoulders. I was as impatient as you when i was at this stage and i simply ignored it, cared for it well and by the time i realized it my hair was below my shoulders. take care and be strong, it will grow.

Everybody experiences stalls- they are frustrating, but stick with it and you will get past it! They are much easier to wait out once your hair is long enough to put up.

The only possible clue I saw in your post was this:

I can't think of why this is happening- I eat a healthy diet (probably not enough, but when my medical issues calm down and let me eat, I try my best to be healthy!)

Does that mean your medical issues sometimes keep you from eating a balanced diet? If so, that could contribute. Not getting enough calories or protein goes straight to my hair- it seems like my body switches the growth off to compensate. A multivitamin won't help much if you're not getting enough real food.

Medical issues? Are you on any strong medication maybe? That might be it... And also if you dont eat enough. Your hair gets whatever nutrition that is left after your body and your organs had their share.

My hair only grows about 1/4" per month in the colder part of the year, so that would be about normal growth for me.

I've never had a major stall, but I have had growth slow down a bit for the past two months. Sometimes I can kick it into gear with some MSM and Vitamin D in winter.

You're at an awkward stage where there's not much you can do with it, and it will always show its length. Such a stage seems to take forever to get through.

Is it possible that your meds are slowing the hair growth? Or have they affected the quality of your hair so that it is more brittle? Do you see many small bits dropping into the basin if you comb there? That will eliminate any major growth you've had.

Ahh..it definitely looks as though you've stalled like everyone else has mentioned! If your body is going through sickness, everything is going to cure the sickness, which is why you're experiencing the slow growth. On top of that, if you're taking meds, they could also be the culprit (I believe someone mentioned something like that). Your hair will absorb your medication (I figure this out since you can actually do drug testing with hair strands and meds will show).

If you're able to, try taking some biotin on top of your multi..that might just help boost your growth. Stimulating scalp massages will help also.

Rhiannon7- Here's my routine....
- Daily wash with Burt's Bees shampoo (no SLS!)
- Condition with Mane and Tail
- Air dry, brush with wide toothed comb. That's it! No heat styling, nothing...

As for the medical side of things: I went through a simultaneous struggle with an eating disorder and a major digestive problem 2 years ago...my stomach hasn't been the same since, it doesn't digest quickly or properly. No doctor has found a good diagnosis, everything is symptomatic and vague. So eating any large quantity of food is extremely hard- I nibble on little things throughout the day: tofu, protein shakes (when I find them), veggies, granola, etc. I also have tons of food allergies!

I'm on Dilaudid for pain, Zofran for nausea. If anyone has been on those, did you shed more...? I'm also on Nexium but I've been on that for a long time and haven't noticed any difference :)
