Hello, lovely LHCers! So, I'm having a bit of a conundrum. I've been working on a perimeter braid and am having trouble anchoring it. Basically it's pigtails, lacebraided, starting at around your chin. Then you just sort of fold each of them up to the back of your head and fasten them so they'll stay. This is where I'm experiencing problems.

The bobby pins just laughed at me, my fail-safe Good Days Magic Grips flew across the bathroom, and while jaw clips will work, to me they ruin the romantic look of the style and make me look like I have horns from the front. :) Do any of you already know this style and have a good way of keeping it up? Or, do you have any ideas? Here's a pic for reference (it's not perfectly even, but I figured it would give you an idea):

As you can see, my hair is too heavy for that barrette and has already begun to slip. I would really appreciate any input you have to give. I'd love to do a tutorial on this style, but I really need to make sure it'll stay before I put it out there. Help!

I have no experience with this style, but I was just thinking if a ribbon of some sort? It could go with the romantic look...

I pick up the ends of the braids, cross them in the middle, then take them up each side of the lace braid, pinning under the lace braid, then bring it all together in the back and secure with a small claw clip. I haven't done this style in awhile; it would probably take 2 or 3 of them now.

I was thinking of maybe sewing them together with a ribbon, but I'm not sure how to go about it on the back of my own head. LOL. I will think on it though, because you are right...it would keep it soft and romantic. I have to get the MacGuyver part of my brain working.

Oh, wow! That looks gorgeous! And it takes care of what to do with the ends, to boot. I'm just going to have to go and get some pretty jaw clips (or decorate some plain ones). I need new ones anyway, all of mine are currently missing one or more teeth.

Torrin, I think your barrette might not be centered (or secure) and that that is why your style is pulling in one direction. Maybe secure with a tight elastic and try once more?

I would think braid them together just in one spot. Otherwise, I think a flexi8 would be beautiful. On the other hand, I have some metal barettes (all one piece with no moving parts) that aren't bad. They're smooth metal and one side is coated in silicone so it stays pretty well. I saw a youtube for a hairsyle like that. I'll try and find it.

Interesting GoddesJourney; that's a different technique. The beginning of the braid in this discussion looks like this:

I love this style, too. But I have the same problem. I have lots of things to secure the top with, but haven't figured out how to anchor the long braid edges together with. I don't like them open down the length -for me they look like giant wings or something.

I've also considered trying to tie them with ribbon or something, but just don't have the coordination. :( I bought some locking bobby pins, but haven't tried using them yet.

Oops:gabigrin:. It looked like that to me. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention.

I wonder if a well-placed twisty tie would be able to hold one edge of the braid to the other...

Hm, well, when I did it, I flipped my hair up, like a Gibson tuck, and then clip it up. Could you try a ficcare? Seems like it'd be perfect, and fit with the romantic feel. I have short hair, so I just used a french barrette thing, and bobby pins.

So I took a gander at that vid. Groovy! Here is what I came up with after watching it. (It's only my first go at it, so it's not the neatest thing ever, but I really like the top and may incorporate that into a somewhat tamer bun and see what that look like. ) Thank you so much for the link, GoddesJourney! You always find the neatest things.

But I am such a dope, I have been sitting here trying to figure out how you did the really small curved rope braids that stuck up from your head and then I realize......oh those are picture frames.:shake: I am a little slow on the uptake today. Spider mom...your method worked very well, I just need to get me a pretty jaw clip...all of mine are so blah and detract from the overall prettiness. I will post pics once I remedy that situation (or before...you never know with me.)

I was playing around with some more of this whole perimeter braiding thing and managed to do it in the rope braid fashion and came up with this up-do:

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1902.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1903.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1904.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1901.jpg

I think it turned out really cool! I only p-braided a small section to sort of use as an accent and I think it looks like a modern take on a nice retro-type style. Do you think a tut on this style will go over well? A lot of people really seem to like retro styles, but it's not so much ACTUAL retro as retro-looking. I have a hard time doing real period styles sometimes because I seem to have too much hair to achieve the look that people want. I have to do a lot of adaptation to work them out into a reasonable facsimile. Gosh I type a lot. Anywhoodle, should this make the tutorial rounds, or is this one not as neat-o as I think it is? I realize that sometimes I only amuse myself. LOL.

How could I have possibly missed this thread the first time around? I could never achieve these styles on my own. In fact, even the hairdressers that I know would be absolutely consternated by them. But, they are gorgeous, and I am sure there are others out there who could achieve them and would appreciate a tutorial.
