View Full Version : What about bobby pins?

I'm still learning to tell good-accessories apart from bad-accessories. A lot of the pre-conceived notions I had about hair are being completely turned around (eg: putting wet hair up in a bun. I thought that would've been terrible to keep it wet all day!). I'm too short still to use combs and elastics. Pinning sections back is the only "styling" I can do to it at the moment.
I've already pitched my plastic brushes and harsh shampoos. Should the bobby pins follow suit?

It depends on what kind of bobby pins you have, I think. If it is seamless bobby pins, with soft rounded tips, I cannot see why you should not be able to use them.

It depends on whether you get damage from bobby pins and how you use them. Some people have no trouble with bobby pins, but some people have trouble with them ripping their hair. Some people also worry about them putting too much strain on their hair because of the high tension/ pinch the bobby pin uses to stay in hair.
If you are sure to pry them apart before inserting them into your hair and also pry them apart when taking them out, they should give a minimum of damage. Essentially, YMMV. Some people like 'em and some people hate 'em.

Hi!
As I am a fan of the 50s bangs as well as creative in forming my own styles, I use tons of bobby pins  - there are different bobby pins out there. If you buy some make sure their tips are dunked in plastic and have some kind of soft rubber tip. Furthermore they should not have any pointy or sharp edges but made "in one go" (if you know what I mean). Lastly, make sure they are not covered with glittery bits, as they tend to scratch your hair's surface unnecessarily. Plus their paint should not come off by scratching them with a fingernail.
So if you keep these bits in mind, bobby pins are ok to use.
Hope that helps.

I am careful and use bobby pins all the time - the other kinds of pins don't work for me at all.

I've found that bobby pins are fantastic alternatives to barrettes (which just don't work at all) in my fine hair. The ones with waves are best for me, since the 'straight' ones just fall right out. I think as long as the ends are protected well and the edges are rounded then you'll be alright.

It seems fine hair has more problems with bobby pins than coarser hair. I personally don't have any problems, but other have. Just be careful!

Bobby pins usually aren't a problem as long as you hold them on open when you put them in and take them out so you're not pulling on the hair. As well if the bobby pins have the rounded ends that helps. Some bobby pins pull on my hair even if I'm careful, but I've never had a problem with the ones with the rounded ends.

My hair doesn't mind bobby pins at all, and it's very fine and easily damaged. However, I think it has to do with the fact my hair laughs at mechanical damage and gets destroyed by chemicals. If your hair is damaged by brushing, bobby pins might not be the best choice.

Definetly stick with the pins that have rounded tips and be sure to ditch them when the tips start to separate and snag. If you are still concerned you can try amish pins or other alternatives depending on what you want to use them for.
