View Full Version : Do people notice when you get a trim?

When I get a trim, even the smallest one, I immediately notice my hair is shorter, my ends are softer and all the nice things we get from a trim. But no one around me does! Unless it is a MAJOR trim, let's say 5inches or more, people just not notice. Maybe this is because my hair looks long to other people, and as long as it still looks long, they tend to not notice the change. I don't think anybody would notice if I went from waist to BSL (unless my closest family and my bf, probably, but I have doubts about my father XD he never notices this kind of things), but I think they would notice if I cut to shoulder.
I also thought it may be related to the fact that my hair is slightly layered (face framing layers at chin, and two smaller layer at apl or so, except the V hemline), so even if I cut the back, it looks the same from the front, and people usually look at my face not at my back :D
How do you feel about that? Do you WANT other people to notice if you had a trim, or you just don't care?

Nope, no one ever did. (I don't trim anymore, haven't for 8/9 months now.) Not even my DF noticed though...
I'm not sure I want anyone to either.
OH... I lied, there was one guy in a couple of my classes who noticed absolutely every little thing I ever did to my hair, and it was intensely creepy... so on the basis of that, no I don't want anyone to notice.

The only "major" trim I've ever done was ~2-3 inches in June 2008. Most of my family noticed and I was even greeted with a "you did it well but you should go to a professional barber". I don't think that makes sense unless they didn't actually think I had done a good job. But anyway, I don't really care if people notice. The vast majority of my trims are very minor (~1/4") and even I can't see a length difference. It would seriously surprise me if someone else monitored my hair closely enough to notice, and it would probably creep me out. :p

No, they don't notice. There has been only one exception. When I went from midback to pixie 12 years ago, I got some comments :p. But it really wasn't a trim but a major cut.
I don't care.

No, I wouldn't expect people to notice a trim. After all, the differences I notice most wouldn't be apparent to others--my ends get nicer, but I notice that mostly when I'm combing. Even a half inch can throw off my updoes, but once I get my hair up nobody else is going to notice that, either. Frankly, if I did a trim and people commented I'd be a little embarrassed. I don't like to call attention to myself for how I look, just for what I do.

No. No one notices when I get a trim. Not ever. :)

I got 6" unwillingly hacked off my hair back in march, AND bangs cut in, and nobody noticed. A week later one friend exclaimed "when did you get bangs?!"
I guess I'd have to shave my head for people to notice I cut it.

No, not even if I cut off 6". After a certain length, people just see "long".

I've had over a foot chopped from my hair (apparently a foot is two inches. Who knew?), come home upset about it, and no one noticed until I said so. And I always wore my hair down then.

My husband didn't notice my recent 1" trim on my shoulder length hair. I did it myself (using Feye's method) and it turned out fine!
I decided to just let him not notice :) he always freaks out when I cut my own hair. Rightfully so; I have messed it up a few times in the past ;)
So it's my little secret!

It's funny that I saw this thread. I cut 3 inches off last night and it looked like such a big difference to me. But no one noticed. I even said to my friends "look how much shorter my hair is". They just looked at me like I was crazy. LOL, oh well.

The same thing happens to me: it seems that trims don't register on their minds when you have long hair. Once even my flatmate saw me cut it (and panicked a bit, because "how did I dare do that to my long hair! It'd look awful!) and then she said something along the lines of "Oh, I don't even see the difference... are you sure you really cut it?"
I don't mind, though it'd be nice if my bf would, sometimes, notice the "good things" (even trim, softer ends...) if not the trim...

People often ask me if I just trimmed because my ends look good. It is nice when that happens. I don't usually trim too much at one go, but a few days ago I took off about 3 inches. I have not seen my friends lately, perhaps they will notice?

NO ONE EVER NOTICES! And if I mention it they look at me like I'm crazy, worrying about trimming a couple inches off when I have butt loads of hair anyway.
Plus, since I wear my hair up pretty much all the time now; no one notices even more so.

Nope, no one notices. And I've stopped caring... it used to annoy me, because although I don't trim often the trims I do get tend to be quite extensive, but it doesn't any more. I've realized that the only way to get the people around me to notice when I trim my hair is to mention it to them.

Four inches of healthy hair were cut off a few months ago due to family pressure about cutting it to a more mature length, as well as to not look so hippyish and my bf didn't notice. I asked, "how could you not notice...a huge amount is missing!". I was bummed because I wanted him to notice. Nobody ever notices my trims whether they're big or small. I suppose if my bf was a fan of my hair he would have noticed, but he prefers shorter lengths on women.

No. No one notices or cares. In the past few years I've gone from tailbone to hips, grown back to tailbone and the cut to hip again, waist after that and then 2" above waist . Not one person has noticed anything, including close friends and family. I think once hair is past a certain length, somewhere in the armpit range, people think it's all long hair and can't see a difference. Most people haven't ever had hair that long and really just don't see it. Plus they really don't care unless they are into long hair like we are. It isn't on their radar and mostly could care less. I'm cool with that. I'm not doing this for anyone but me.

Most men I know are gaga for long hair. It must be extremely frustrating!

Some days ago I was talking to a male friend about hair, and he said that below shoulder, it's all the same, and he doesn't understand why would people want to have longer hair. He prefers shorter hair on women too.

I notice of course but know one else really does.
I don't think I've had many major trims (more than 2") for a good while either.
My Mom will notice if my bangs get longer though. I do get them trimmed often (don't trust myself).

I notice generally because braided buns become a little trickier for a few months, and even after a small trim, it feels incredibly (disproportionally) short. No-one else notices what I do with my hair really; I'll get the occasional comment from my mother, or if someone sees me when it's airdrying ("your hair really is getting long" :) ), but nothing else.
I sometimes think people don't say anything out of politeness - after wearing my hair up in every class, I wore it down to one, and it was incredibly satisfying getting the odd double-take, but there was definitely hesitation there too.

This is slightly OT but connected. I was watching Big Love on HBO with my parents, and I'm not crazy about the show, but it was on and I was eating dinner with them. Anyway, Chloe Sevigny's character (Nicky) cut her hair! I was sure of it. She had waist length before and now it's just below bsl. And Sevigny has a long torso, so this 4 inches or so. Still long, but I think I was the only who noticed. It looked different down and her French braid looked thinner and shorter. I kept mentioning it throughout the show because I couldn't believe it. I'm sure I'm one of the few viewers who noticed :o

Currently I have shoulder length hair and just yesterday had 2" cut off b/c of soooo many pixie layers. I'm sure my coworkers will notice sometime this week. Maybe not on Monday but at some point. They didn't want me to cut at all but it has to be done at one time or another. I decided to bite the bullet now rather than later.

Nope, no one notices when I get 1" trimmed. I don't usually trim that much. I guess with curly hair and shrinkage from wet to dry, 1" = maybe 1/4 of a curl, so it's not that noticeable.

I feel it b/c I loose splits & tangles and the long fairytale end of my braid changes a lot. 1-3" comes off, depending. DH trims it even.
I think only he and I know. No one else mentions it.

The only people who notice that I get trims are the trimmer and anyone I tell. My hair is always up so it's not noticeable. That and I have curly hair so if it was down it wouldn't be very noticeable either.

I wouldn't worry too much on those lines. Its probably best that your bf isn't only dating you for your hair :)
No one has ever noticed trims on me. Going from BSL to chin gets noticed. Going from an inch past BSL to a couple of inches above BSL is kinda hard to notice, especially with hair that lengthens and shrinks depending on waviness from day to day anyway.

No they don't but again, they never do.
When I had my pixie of course everyone noticed it, but after that, when I cutted to keep the style, people didn't notice, they just thinked it stayed short. (no not really, I don't think anyone notices my hair.. that would be creppy :P )

I totally agree with this.
Ironically, I was reading this thread because no one noticed I cut about 7 inches off recently until about two weeks later...not even my daughters. I was thinking that it was because I seldom wear my hair down, but after reading this thread and talking about it with my husband I have to agree that "long hair" is anything past shoulders for most people and that is as much as they notice.

Not really. When I do get a trim, it's usually about .5" - 1" cut off. One day I got an inch taken off the ends. Then I went over to my friends house. His wife could tell it had been cut, but when I told him, he said "Dude, I'd ask for your money back! They didn't even cut anything off!" LOL :D

Others don't usually notice my trims. One lady just realized my hair wasn't finger tip length . . . and I cut it from that length 2 years ago. LOL To her defense I have only worn my hair down (more than 80% of the time) just since August. I see her almost every day, though. ;)

People never notice when I get a trim, unless it's at least 4" or more. And at that point, it becomes more of a "cut" than a "trim." Once you get butt length and longer, to the un-LHC-ed eye, it all just looks long to other people. :p
curlylocks85

I would have to say no, but then again if people do notice, they just do not say anything.
On the other hand, when I have not received a trim sometimes people will ask if I have had a trim. I ask why and they say “Oh you hair looks different” or shorter”. Not sure, what that is about.
