View Full Version : Annoying White Dots!

I straightened my hair (sigh) for my stepmom's funeral last Saturday and today I was inspecting my ends and I found NUMEROUS white dots all the way up to about 2inches of my hair shaft...
I had done discovered this before back in September and cut off 3inches (also to remove layers) but I REALLY don't want to cut that much of my hair again.
Do I need to stop straightening in general? I am pretty sure I read that those white dots are due to a burst cortex from heat.
I never blowdry my hair so straightening is the only thing I can think of that would have perpetuated this damage.
Should I trim again to get rid of these? Or is it okay to let them go? I am only 4inches from my goal...would waiting be ok????
I want long hair but I want HEALTHY hair.
I am seriously considering throwing my straightener AWAY!!!

Throw it away if you want to grow longer. It can only damage your hair and set you back, damage-wise.

Throw away the straightener. Your hair will thank you.

Sorry straighteners can be really evil - it sounds like you'll have to throw it away

As others have said, lose the straightener. Your hair will thank you.
Unfortunately, white dots are not completely avoidable for everyone, even without heat styling. It really depends on how fragile your locks are and what they're predisposed to do. I get them, and I recall that ktani said she does, though she's managed to eliminate splits entirely with her catnip rinses. Some folks have reported that washing their hair exclusively in cooler water has reduced their white dots, but I think I need to turn up my thermostat before attempting that.

So should I trim right away or can I get away with waiting without the damage progressing??

If you baby your ends, you might be able to wait a few more months. I'd suggest S&Ding them.!

I get rid of splits and dots the moment I get the chance.

It is hard to say without seeing your hair. 4" is about 8 more months of growth and with white dots (I don't think I am familiar with them), it will probably be difficult to stretch out your trim until then. Maybe instead put yourself on a 1 year plan to get there meaning you can cut off about 2" along the way during this year. You could either do that now and try to wait it out, or space it out however you prefer.

in my experience, my hair breaks off at the white dot and then splits...so the damage extends above the dot.
i've never tried to baby dotty hair, but if you start to see breakage it might be a good idea to trim (or S&D, if the dots aren't too extensive).
my condolences for your stepmom.
