I need a 1960s hairstyle

I'm having a surprise birthday party for my dh and it is a 1960s theme (he was born in 1960). I need a hairstyle to go with my 1960s outfit. I'll be wearing a bright, geometric print top in black, yellow, pink, white and red print with a wide V neck (sort of low cut) and a black skirt and boots.

My hair is 29" long, with stretched out S waves and fairly thick.

Also, if anyone has makeup tips for 1960s look, I'd love to know.

If it's the preppier half you're after, if you don't have a fringe, you can make a faux side-swept one like this photo (it's from my facebook Yearbook Me album, it looks kinda silly, but it's what I'm talking about. lol)

Just take the front part of your hair and comb or brush it across your forehead, then pin it behind your ear. You could try to do either a bouffant with the back of the hair (I have no instructions for that, sorry, lol!) or just wear it loose with a wide headband and your faux fringe. Very Mary Tyler Moore. ;)

Coming of age in the 60's myself, I feel a bit confident to advise you. It appears that you are dressing more "mod" than hippie, but you can incorporate a headband for your hair worn across your forehead and tied in the back hair parted in the middle and hanging loose. I would pick out a color from your blouse. Makeup was pretty pale back then with pale lipstick but very heavy eyeliner top and bottom-hard lines, not the "smokey eye" that is popular today.

I think the hair parted in the middle and left to hang down goes with what you are wearing, but here's a gallery of styles-

As far as makeup, I'd go for a thick, winged, black eyeliner. Tips on how to do them can be found on Youtube.

If Im doing the 60s style, I'm using rollers in my hair... Rather big ones so you get that vava-volume at the crown. Then wear a headband, black/white or the color of your blouse.

Here is a video for a 60s style. They do use a blowfrier though, so I think the rollers are a better option... But it gives you an idea at least! :)

Just wear it loose and natural with a middle part and buy a headband and wear it over your forehead like so: Headband (http://www.stylehop.com/fashion-blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/hippie-headband.jpg). The 60's were two things - carefree and natural or very put together and elegant like Jackie O. Have fun!

If you go with the headband and down, be sure to bouffant the back with a rat or a bumpit. 1960 was the year of big hair, so get your hairspray ready :)

Remember not to try to brush it out when the party's over, slather on a ton of conditioner and work it through to avoid damage :)

Oh my gosh, that chestnut hairdo is perfect. She makes it look so easy, but my hair is wavy, thick and unruly. Nevertheless, I will give it a try this weekend. I don't have fringe, so it probably won't look authentic. :( Great suggestion! Thank you.

Ah! You can do that with a Puffy Pony :D See if you can find it at an accessories store at your mall.

Just make a pony, kind of high-ish, lift it up, insert the puffy pony and then pin in the ends. :)
