View Full Version : If you can do a 3-strand braid you might want to try...

Ramona_Fosca
January 28th, 2010, 05:22 AM
I love braiding but due to my DD 2 always being around me I hardly ever find the time and patience to do 4 or 5 strand braids...

So I have started looking for ways of combining french, dutch, lace etc. braid to creative updos and I know other people try that too (Simone, I am waiting for you here!).

This thread is meant to collect ideas about what you can do once you've mastered 3-strand (+french/dutch) braiding.

I'm going to start with

Lace braid into tuck

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4160&pictureid=55642

and

Three-fold french braids into ponytail
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4160&pictureid=59077

and

Diagonal French

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=884&pictureid=50866

Who wants to play?:D

Ooh those are so beautiful! I love all your updos, I remember your ideas for shoulder length hair, too - so creative! I wish my hair was longer and not so layered... I'm subscribing to this thread anyway :D

Your hair and styles are absolutely gorgeous! You are a braiding pro. :D I am so excited to get to BSL (again!) so I can do these. I'm nuts for braiding and braids of any sort, and there's only so much I can do at shoulder-length. But I'm going to try the three-fold french braids with a ponytail right now! I usually just part my hair on the side and do a med/large english braid on the "large" side of my part, then a smaller braid on the other side, and I like that well enough. But these look great. Thanks so much for the stellar pics, and for posting this thread! I probably would've never come across your beautiful hair otherwise. :D

ETA: Oh yeah- could you tell me what your ideas for shoulder-length hair are, that hmmm mentioned? I am -very- interested. :D :D :D

Those are oh so pretty!!! I can do a 3-strand English braid, but not much else. I'm not very patient when it comes to doing interesting styles and unusual braids.

In the first shot, your barrette looks a bit like a giant third eye in the back of your head. Guess that's good for watching your two-year-old. And that last shot is hilarious (the hands, not your hair). Gave me a big smile!

You did the french diagonal yourself? It looks so cool!! I love it! I also love the lace into tuck french braid, that's very elegant!

I must try the diagonal tough! If I remember something for the regular 3 strand I'll try and do it and post it =D Still have to do the Arwen Braid for the style challenge thread tough...

(starts thinking about the arwen braid... I better get some arm pain pills!)

Thank's for sharing! And a very cool idea too! :flower:

I'll try the others :)

I LOVE the diagonal French! :crush: That is absolutely fascinating to me, and I will have to try it.

I have a couple to share, they're very simple.

Twin French braids wrapped around my head like milkmaid (heidi?) braids and pinned with regular bobby pins.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2615&pictureid=36037

Regular Dutch braid, bunned at the nape of the neck and held with my green d12 stick.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2615&pictureid=50056

Just a regular French braid, ending in a bun and pinned with regular black bobby pins. :)

ooooooooooo ... I've fallen off the braiding wagon lately due to staying up late and then having no time in the morning to get ready, but for a while there I was really hardcore.

Simone, those are AWESOME!! You did all of those with APL-length hair??

saskia_madding

Honestly, I'm not sure my idea of APL is the same as this forum's. When I started doing those, my hair went to the top of my armpit line. Now I'm an inch or so below that, around the top of my bra strap.

saskia_madding
January 28th, 2010, 11:54 AM
Medieval Maniac - It's just a Dianyla braid that I wrap into a bun. Here's the link for the braid (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=23652). I find that doing this helps to keep the braided bun much higher on your head than just an English braid and looks more flattering from the front.

The thing I love about threading the accent braids through the bun is that it doesn't eat up any of your length, so the braid is as long as your regular hair. With longer and thicker hair than mine, it can look quite stunning. :)

Basically, you just create the bun by wrapping it around the braid. It's pretty easy and looks neat. I can't wait to see other people's versions. :D

I love the diagonal french braid...I'm trying to master the french herringbone, but for some reason it looks like a regular french braid when I do it (the part that's actually attached to my head, not the hanging braid) and I'm not sure why. I'm making the sections small enough and I'm pulling it pretty tight...But oh well. I'll keep trying.

And btw, yellowchariot, perhaps you could pull off a sword if dressed in chainmail? lol.

Torrin paige has an excellent youtube tutorial on how to do various lace braids. There are other tutorials on youtube, but I learnt off her :D

A lace braid is when you add a new strand of hair to only one side of the braid instead of both sides, as you would do in French braiding. I don't know where there is a good tutorial anymore, as the best one, which was on Dreamweaver Braiding is not there anymore. The site's been down for quite a while.

My crown braid above was done doing a Dutch Lace Braid.

All of these pictures are amazing! I can never seem to get accent braids or any kind of variation on french braids to look right... I guess I just need more practice. I tried the diagonal french braid once and it just looked, and felt, crooked. I'll have to give it some more practice though. These braids into buns though, GORGEOUS! I'm going to HAVE to find some excuse to try some of them!

I'm so envious of everyone's french braiding skills! I made another attempt at one this evening, and it had little loops everywhere and looked incredibly greasy. It also took me 15 minutes to untangle the backbraid that had formed on the bottom 2/3 of my hair. I'll just have to content myself with looking and doing non-frenchy styles, I guess. Gorgeous updos on everyone!

This is exactly what happened to me when I was practicing the other day. The loops I can deal with, with practice I guess, but untangling the mess that formed on the ends was a nightmare. Maybe french braids aren't for people with curly ends? If anyone has a solution to this, I'm all ears.

In terms of untangling, the sad and annoying truth is that you just have to do it frequently. Ever two or three turns, when I'm adding hair to the main braid, I'll run my hand all the way down the shaft of one of the strands.

That untangles one, and then I find the other two untangle much more easily. If they are really tangled then I will sometimes use a comb.

I'm not afraid to pull on my hair a little - although it breaks easily, I've learned to sort of *feel* the tension level that I know is safe, so if I feel the tension get tighter than I feel is safe, I'll just let go and detangle with one hand while holding the braid with another.

Although my hair is short right now, this method worked perfectly for me when I had longer hair.

The trick is not to let the tangled back braid get too overwhelming. A quick detangle every few turns works wonders.

That's so completely true. The longer the hair gets the more likely you'll have it braiding itself together from the bottom up as you go from the top down just by the motions you're doing, so a good bet is to prevent that from happening whenever it starts. A standard tangle is one thing, but having to pretty much undo a braid because you want to keep braiding is a whole different bag of tricks to contend with!

All these braids are awesome and a real inspiration for me to take up braiding again. I only wish my braids weren't so tiny. I don't really know what I'm doing wrong since I've seen people with even thinner hair than mine who's braids look much thicker. Suggestions?

Maybe your braids are too tight?

Maybe your braids are too tight?

I thought so too but even when I make the braids very loose they are tiny. I just don't get it

Reviving this thread with a link to the Masara-braid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND5dJXnBs2k). Thank you to our wonderful ladies Masara and Torrin!

I've seen awesome examples of this at the "wear each hairtoy once" thread - maybe somebody could add an action pic since I did not get around to taking a picture yet...

Oh what fun! Lots of good ideas in this thread. Here are a couple I haven't seen here yet.
This is about 6-8 braids, one above the other. My son dubbed the style "dread-hawk":

This is a snail braid (dutch braid curved and coiled):

Perimeter braid open (similar to lace braid):

Perimeter braid tucked, pinned, and brought together in the back:

I haven't done it in a while, but I used to like an upside down french braid with a bun at the top...I haven't seen that mentioned yet and it's a fun style!

There are so many good ideas here. I can't see most of the pictures, but I'm still feeling inspired! I especially love Karli's lace braids with bun...beautiful. I'll try that tomorrow, I think!

Eee, awesome braided styles! I must try that snail thing, it looks amazing.

Can I play, too? I'm usually too lazy to attempt 4+strand braids, so 3 strands are for me.

Whimper. :( I am envious. My braid, one single english braid is very thin. If I try any dutch or french or lace, it's all scalp showing everywhere, ugly ugly ugly. Hair is too thin, too fine, too straight. Any bun made with a braid is just a little nub on the back of my head.... discouraging.

Very cool sword accessory!
I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but do you ladies think that a guy could get by wearing one of those sword type sticks?

(Though I'm rally asking on my behalf lol :D )

You should try it!
I have a friend who wears a sword stick in his hair every now and then - but he's 6' 5" and looks an ancient Saxon warrior so no one would be telling him his hair 'sword' looked funny :p

Beautiful braids everyone!! I'm going to try a few before long.

Whether it's a sword or a regular hair stick, I think guys look good in them. :) Go ahead yellowchariot, give it a shot! :cheese:

Do you know that you are my hair hero?? I love every single style I've seen you wear! I think my favorite is the one you have in your sig-- with the two braided buns that wrap around each other... gorgeous!! I wish I had your hair! and such pretty streaks, too!

Alas, I cut my left index finger while chopping tomatoes - and with or without a bandaid it's really hard to do anything much with your hair with a cut finger! The snail braid will have to wait.

(Thank you so much, countryhopper! :o)

OK, here's my snail braid (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=4777&pictureid=68638). Don't laugh.

OK, laugh, but don't tell me that you did.

Well, fine then, we'll laugh together about it.

Clearly this one needs a little practice, and for me to be just a little more relaxed in my approach to updo's. :o
