Easy & messy bun created with an elastic band. Just found this on YouTube:

Cute! I wear my hair like that sometimes as well.

Back in school, I used to make a bun by making a ponytail, and by looping the hair through, except for the last time, when I partially pulled the hair through the elastic. It looks a little different; this is way cuter than the way I used to do it.

I've worn my hair like this a few years ago almost daily. I had something between shouder an BSL back then. Now my hair is much too long to hold iself like this and too heavy as well. But my sister (BSL) wears her hair like this a lot and finds is very comfy.

I would be careful when pulling out the elastic, my hair tangled a lot while doing that.

Thank you for posting this link. I have been hunting for a way to wear a messy bun and this is perfect for my length of hair.
Super easy also:)

I used to wear my hair like this all the time too, when it was shorter. Now that I'm nearly classic it's just way too long to look good and hold well. :( I miss being able to do it!

I've been looking for a new messy bun method and this one might be it! Thanks!!

I too have been trying to figure out a new messy bun, gonna have to attempt this. But, ack, why was she yanking her elastic like that? Seriously. *cringe*

Doesn't look right with my hair. It's still really cute though.

Ack, I tried it and I can't do it! But it looks so easy and pretty! Oh well. :/

My hair's not long enough to do this yet, but I can't wait till it is!! What type of elastics (brand names, please!) do you recommend for something like this? The one she is using looks rather large.

lapushka
January 28th, 2010, 07:20 AM
Looks to me like she's using a thin hosiery type of elastic... I think. Something like this:
http://www.scunci.com/product_detail.aspx?gid=4&pid=9999999999

I'd probably use one of my really stretched out, old, elastics. I have some that I've had for more than twenty years  - the elasticity is almost entirely gone. They are regular, metallic thingy ones, though. They didn't have no damage ones back then. But they are still my most comfy elastics. My pet peeve with elastic bands is that they aren't stretchy and wide enough. I'd rather have looser elastics but that's just me. For a while I even used clothing elastic, the stuff they put into scrunchies.

I do this a lot, but I call it the folded pony. I have a LOT more length than the girl in the vid, but my thickness is just a ii, so it still works out. :p

I used to wear something very similar this on my duvet days, the tangles were terrible, but it was nice to feel the strands on my neck.

January 28th, 2010, 12:31 PM
OUCH, is the only thing I can think of :p I don't think this would work on much longer hair, and for me it would create a mass of tangles, specially when taking it out...

It looks cool and practical tough, I just don't know if it would be hair friendly. Or maybe it's the way she does it, I'm so much more carefull than that

My first successful attempt:

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w254/Ramona_Fosca/100128018.jpg

I didn't find it particularly damaging - but that might depend on the hairtype. I'm going to wear that bun again, I like the messy look.

So that's how they do it!
I see girls wear their hair like this all the time and have wondered how.
Thanks!

Ramona, that turned out FABULOUS!!!! It looks SO pretty -- and I love the "flower" accessory you have in your hair, too. My hair isn't quite long enough to make this work, yet, but I can't wait until it is. This style looks so easy and comfortable!!

Until you get there you might want to try the Angelbun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=131). On me, it looked kind of similar, it is just as easy and perfect for shoulder/ APL hair.

I wear my hair like this a lot. The only problem is that it makes some funky waves/bends in my hair, so don't expect it will look normal after.

Thanks, Ramona! I can't quite figure out how to do the Angelbun. Should be easy, I know, but I just don't get the fork-turning concept.

Isn't that the truth?! Whenever I put an elastic in my hair, I get the oddest bumps, bends, and funky waves. I was just thinking about that, so you read my mind! There's something about us 2s, I think!

Oh, I love this bun! I saw this very tutorial a couple months ago and can't stop using it! :) Although, yes, I do get really weird waves when I take it down.

I'm curious. For those with longer hair who can do this style, does the elastic show when you turn your head to the side?

Yep. Mine's BSL.

This might help. Leave a small piece of hair out of the bun, then tie it around the elastic band & pin down.

Thanks, Lapushka. Geez, if I had known about this bun a few years ago, I might never have gone through the terrible Hair Massacre. This will most definitely save me whenever I get frustrated with my hair again. I can't wait to try it. Grow hair, grow!!!

My hair isn't long enough to try this yet (at least I don't think it is). But I'm having a hard time following it, too. She goes rather fast and the movements aren't clear. So don't feel stupid -- or, well, if you do, you're in good company! :o

wow, yours came out great! I'll have to try this style, though I bet my hair might be too long for it. I wish I could find some easy bun that would work well for my hair :)

Hopefully I'll be able to do this one day. I've never been able to master the messy bun (some of that is probably because my hair is so short).

This doesn't work well for my hair at all. I think mine is too long...
I also don't like how the elastic shows and how it is more damaging then hairsticks.

Really? Cause this makes me cringe - those hairs kind of get caught there and this might be difficult to detangle after a while...

October 6th, 2010, 12:51 PM
I use to do my hair like this lots when it was between APL and BSL. Its cute and carefree looking.
The only thing I didn't like, as mariika said, was when I would take it down I could have some strange messy kinks in random places.

When I put my hair up with a hair elastic, this is pretty much, 99% of the time, how I do it. Always have, since jr. high school! :D

LOL, for the longest time, any bun I tried to make looked like that. In fact, my attempts at a proper, neat bun always end up like that, too. Glad to see I'm fashionable (if only by accident) :p.

October 6th, 2010, 03:05 PM
No, that's the tinti bun :p I've been doing that in many years just because I couldn't figure out how they did the messy bun I had to make one myself. Kinda fun to see another one do that.

I would appreciate if of someone could translate the video into words. :flower:

I've watched the video quite a few times and I feel somewhat lost. :wail: I'm more of a verbal/written kind of person and I generally learn best from videos where the person is describing what they are doing either verbally or in text.

I'd really like to try this bun, but it is just so difficult for me to follow. :0

Many thanks in advance! :)

Here's another video. She actually starts putting her hair up at about 1:30, and moves slower than the first video given. No idea what she was talking about for the first bit, since I had the sound off and was skipping forward.

I am confused - different person, different bun. ???

No same kind of technique, I think. The first example showed someone who did the same thing, just lower on her head and with hair that's less layered, so it looks a little different.

Yeah, it turns out looking so completely diifferent, though - to me it's not clear that the instructions given in the second video will get you the results from the first video. That could well be a peculiarity of my own brain, though - we all process things differently.

I used to put my hair up like this all the time! Wet. Dry. All the time! Was super quick and convenient. Now that I'm past classic it just doesn't work for me any more though. Too bad, it looks very cute!

2peasinapod
October 16th, 2010, 11:12 AM
For all the people having trouble with it, my hair does that naturally because of all my layers (too short to stay up, so they stick out like that). So, if you have a blunt hemline, that might be the problem.
