View Full Version : Are You A Hat Wannabe???

I know I sure am :D I think hats are just about the most neat thing about having hair!

But, I cannot pull off a hat to save my life!! My bangs are always in the way, and I cant push them away because if they are not hanging in my face I feel head naked :D

When I shaved ALL my hair off that bleak year in 2006 I bought fun new hair (wigs) off ebay and they looked weird unless I wore a hat!! Then they were so neat!

But my head without new hair (wig) is too small and now no hats look good on me blah!!!!

If you have hat pics lets see them!!!
Here is one from when I wore my fake hair!!!!!!!!!

that hat looks cute on you... I have two hat pictures on my albums.http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=2960 I hated wearing hats but wanted so bad for the say reason as you. My bangs looked weird all flat on my forhead. So i got some of those Snood (there is a thread on this hat) type hats.

People always tell me I look great in hats...and I agree, I guess my forehead is horrifying? haha.

I wish I could wear hats at work

It's funny how hats used to be basically required for women in European and American culture, indoors and out, and now are so difficult that people have to summon courage to wear them!

In my experience, the hairstyle makes a big difference in whether a hat looks flattering. Some hats just don't look great except when some hair is showing. That's why twin pigtails or ponytails make hats look so cute. When I had my hair in a pixie, I could only wear beanie-type hats.

I used to wear hats quite a bit for a few years, started when I had to avoid sun due to an illness and it was cool so I bought some winter hats, too. In french we say some people have a "hat head" which means any hat will suit them, honestly for me it's the case, whatever my hairdo hats look nice on me. But I've found that hat + side "heidi type" braids = very flattering, too. I haven't worn any for quite a while, though, nice hats are pretty expensive.

I'm a Cancer so I look good in hats.....this is what my aunt always told me. :)

I don't have any photos online of me wearing any though. Being in the climate I'm in I don't feel comfortable wearing them often, so they're relegated to when I visit the mainland.

Hey, I'm a Cancer and I look good in hats too; never heard there was a connection!:)

I love hats. The only thing I don't love about hats is that it's hard to find hats that work with many updos; I've knitted some for myself but most modern commercial ones won't work. When my hair was shorter I wore hats nearly every day, sunhats in the summer and warm hats in the winter, plus some vintage dress hats at night.

Now I don't always want to go to the trouble of co-ordinating hat and hairdo, so I wear them less. Still pretty often, though, couple times a week.

I used to be a little anxious about how my head looked in a hat (I wear those oversized knitted hats that you can stuff all of your hair in) but then I decided, "Meh, who cares?" :)

I'm definitely a hat wannabe! This forum is responsible for me taking up crochet, after not having done it for 50 years. Here's my first project...a floppy beret. I can either leave my hair out or stuff it in. I have bangs, too, and if I don't leave them out of the hat, I feel like my forehead is naked, too.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/honestwitness/utf-8BSU1HMDA2MzMuanBn.jpg

I have been working on a calorimetry, too. It's not done yet, but when it is, I'll post a pic here.

I saw a very nice "hat" with an updo the other day. The young woman had her hair in a high, messy bun. Then, she had wrapped several times around her head, below the bun and above her ears, what looked like a long strip of plaid fabric and secured it in a few places with those bobby pins that have one rhinestone on them. The material wasn't even hemmed, just cut with the grain of the fabric. It looked really cool!

Oh, I'd love to wear more hats! I look good in rather floppy ones that can help frame my face. I also look very good in newsboy style hats. I still haven't found a style of hat that I feel comfortable wearing indoors, though . . .

I have a couple of beanies that I like... but they're not as useful in southern California as they were in Utah, and have the unfortunate hair mashing side effect. Nowadays I'm more likely to pop on a visor than a 'real' hat. I do have a very nice floppy sun hat and a gorgeous little newsboy-type hat. I don't ever wear them though. I should start though. On cooler days, they do a good job at keeping my head warm.

I look good in hats (I think!), which is a good thing, because when you live in Minnesota and don't have a car, they aren't optional. I don't really have many pictures of myself in hats, but here's a pretty silly one for you browncoats out there:
http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u358/sneakybea/Photo20.jpg

I made the hat myself, and messed up with the increases, so it's a bit taller than it's supposed to be, but that makes it really easy to fit it over an updo. I haven't really solved the bangs problem, though, with this or any other hat. They can get squished down pretty easily.

I love wearing hats- cold weather hats, fashion hats, whatever!
I even wear the green Army beanies my son left here, lol!
I've got fuzzy pink ones, fuzzy blue ones, fuzzy tan, lots of black ones, lacy crocheted beanies, bal caps (not for any teams, but from the Bacardi plant in Puerto Rico and pink ones that say "Baby", lol!), pink cowboy hat, and tons of bandanas, but I guess those don't count as hats, but I do wear them for fashion and function (to cover my hair when I don't want to deal with it or if I just want to show off my funky bandanas!).

Yep, another hat lover. But a list of complaints makes me a wanna-be: I have a larger head and thick hair, so have a hard time finding hats off the rack that fit. My head is sensitive to pressure, tends to get itchy in hats, and my body temperature rises a bazillion degrees in a hat (which is bad when you live in the Deep South). And it bothers me when things interfere with my peripheral vision.

See? I'm too crabby and particular to wear hats! :o

BUT, I love knitting and buying great hats for people I love.

Here are two favorite links:

The Hat People (http://www.hatpeople.com/)

Sock Lady hats (http://www.socklady.com/accessories/hats-scarves.php)

And a picture of a project of mine--a "minihat" or "big headband" or whatever you call these wraps that are so friendly for hotheaded longhairs such as myself:

I sympathise, Beets. I have a jumbo-sized head and thick hair and can also hardly find any hats that fit. They're mostly too small or they fit only just, so that I get all itchy and headachey rather quickly. Or if it is like a Peruvian style hat (or Jayne hat, like sneakybea's - which is darn cute, by the way!), which I love love love, they tend to just slide upwards so they end up on top of my head looking freaky.
I do have a rather cool 30s style black stiff felt hat that is huge and thus fits me fine. It is a bit dressy and almost costumy to wear regularly - I got it years ago to wear to a wedding. I should take a picture of it, it is rather cute.

In the mean time, here's me in my calorimetry: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3982&pictureid=53236
Hurrah for calorimetries!
LHC also inspired me to make myself a Panta (ribbed headband - I forget who mentioned them to me, I think it may have been moonbeam), but I haven't got a picture of that yet.

Probably the only hats I look decent in are regular baseball caps and cowboy hats. Sadly I don't get to wear hats much as it's just so darned hot where I am most of the time. I don't own any cowboy hats at the moment but I'm looking around for one. :) I'm quite finicky when it comes to having something on my head though.. if a hat squeezes too much, makes me itchy, makes me sweat, etc. I won't wear it. :P (plus I absolutely hate hat hair! xD) Ah well.. maybe one day I'll find a nice breathable hat that I like. ^^

So do a lot of you wear your hair down with hats? I love hats (all kinds--big beautiful floppy sun hats, cute little berets, sexy, bright coloured turbans with brooches on them, baseball caps & cowboy hat...you name it), but I have a hard time figuring out how to wear my hair with them. I'd prefer to have my hair in an updo, but I don't like how it looks when you stuff all your hair in a hat & I have yet to figure out a style that holds my hair firmly at the nape of the neck.

If anyone has experience, or opinions on which hats look best with loose hair, I'd be interested in hearing them.

I love hats! I'm not sure if I look good in hat, but I dont mind, I still use them. :) You just have to use hats here, especially in winter, would be silly to go out in -25 celcius (-13 F) without hat. I just hoped there were better choice of hats in my hometown's shops! I'd love to have a nice hat that not everyone here has. Maybe I just have to knit one myself. :D Or maybe I find something this weekend when we go to Tallinn, Estonia.

Ok, I'll show you one picture of me in a hat... That's taken in beach promenade cafe in Pärnu, Estonia. Great beach, great athmosphere, we go there every summer. Plenty of sunshine, so I better use a hat, I get a sun stroke quite easily. This was my favourite beach hat last year (and yes, I have a double chin at the photo, I gained weight after operation in spring, no exercise was allowed for months, now lost 7kgs or 15 pounds since this photo was taken):
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4310332844_7d2501c2f3.jpg

My forehead is so high, that when I'm without bangles the aliens could spot it from the space and land on it. So perhaps a hat is a great thing on me, that hides at least part of my forehead underneath... :D

Resurrecting if y'all don't mind, because I am SO TOTALLY a hat wannabe. My mom always says I look cute in hats and she's jealous.

I have trouble with them, though. For one, they tend to irritate my forehead where they touch--let us not even talk about wool hats.

For two, I always feel a bit awkward. So few people wear hats for fashion. What's a summer hat and what's a winter hat? And I was telling my mom I'd feel even more weird in winter because I'd come in, take off my "warm" outside hat (I wear a fleece-lined sherpa-style hat), then put on another, different hat??? Most of the hats I like though would probably be "winter" hats though...is there such a thing as a hat you can only wear in winter? Are some kosher year-round even though they're wool or knit? (not like obvious keep-you-warm winter hats)

I've been trying berets lately (read: in the past two days). I always liked them, but never liked the way i looked in them. I find I can't wear the more stiff varieties (inc. the traditional type). They always have weird corners sticking up, plus my head is small so the beret always looks huge.

But I've found a couple floppier ones I've liked. And I've had a lot of good comments about them last night and today when I've worn them.

(anybody know which side you wear a beret on? I'm personally inclined to wear it to the left, but I keep reading to wear it on the right, and before I wear on the left I want to make sure it doesn't have some sort of meaning I'm not aware of--I don't want to find out the French Terrorist Forces wear theirs on the left or something)

I look weird in hats... Some of them suit me, like bowler hats while I'm in drag as Charlie Chaplin (don't ask), or lil thirties style hats when I was playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret...

Oh, and as far as berets...I saw a lot of stuff online saying to push them to the back. Is this actually a correct use of the beret, or did some clueless person start it by wearing a beret incorrectly and other people copied it and pretended it was correct? It looks cute on me with SOME berets, but I wouldn't do it if it would make me look like an idiot who hasn't a clue what she's doing!.

I don't think it really matters the "right" way. It seems to change.

Remember when the only "acceptable" way to wear your baseball cap was backwards? Now it's up high on the head and sideways? The way people wear their caps now would get them beat up in the late '80s and '90s for being uber geeky ;)

I can't wear my berets too far back or they just fall off! I pull mine over my head, then push it back kind of like a headband :) You see berets worn in the 80s and they are usually high and slightly to the side and usually poofy.

I can't say as I've ever given a lot of thought to the question "does the hat look good on me?" I like hats for themselves, so if I want to keep the sun out of my face or my head warm, I don a hat. I have a photo album devoted to them. Hmmmmmm, I haven't added to it in quite awhile; must mean I need new hats.

I wear a ball cap with the long part turned whichever way it needs to be turned to keep the sun off my face, even if it's sideways.
