how thick is your ponytail circumference?
Let me explain I have put the question as follows 2 inches and under that means over 1 inch but not greater than 2. Same goes for 3 inches or under, this means greater than 2 inches but not over 3 inches.... perhaps I will make a more accurate poll featuring greater detail once I have an idea of what people span between..this is admittedly very general however it should give a basic idea of thicknesses we carry in our ponytails!

The last time I measured I was about 3.5 inches.

Are you sure your hair isn't thicker then that? I noticed in your classifier you say your hair is ii-iii thickness. Here is the directions (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=8954):

Put your hair in a ponytail with as much hair as possible in it. Don't bother with the way it looks - the goal is to have most/all of your hair in there. If it means it sits smack dab on top of your head, put it there.

Measure the circumference of the ponytail. If you have bangs and/or you can't get all of your hair in there adjust according to how much of your hair you have measured.

i - thin (less than 2 inches/5 centimeters)
ii - normal (between 2-4 inches or 5-10 centimeters)
iii - thick (more than 4 inches/10 centimeters)

Edit: Oh never mind... I thought you were talking about your hair when you said "I have put 2 inches and under that means over 1 inch but not greater than 2." but you were just explaining the poll. Oops!

When I measure with my bangs (and bound by a ponytail holder) I get 6 inches. Honest to goodness.

I'm at a messy 4.9 inches, but that's not all my hair, so "other" i guess. Almost 5, maybe get over 5........

Could someone please explain exactly how to measure this? :) No one can have a regular ponytail that is more than 4 inches, can they..? I've never tried measuring mine but I have very thick hair, but 4 inches?! Or do you roll all of your hair in there (ends and all)? Maybe Im just miscalculating... Please help me! :S

We're measuring the circumfrence of the ponytail, the distance all the way around it if that helps.

Mine is just under 3.

3.1 inches without bangs, I just measured for a Senza Limiti order.

I'm quite happy about this, actually, though I feel that it is falling out and thinning + my ends are way thinner than new-grown hair because of damage.

So, I guess 3.1 is pretty good given all that :)

~6.2
And that's with the undercut. =O
I almost forgot how hard it was to handle when it was more than 7.

SO- It's 5.7 :[

3.75 inches. I think I was past 4 at one point, but I have been shedding and the surgery I had did say hair loss was possible.

4.25 inches... I was at 4.5 inches in the summer, but I had some pretty bad shedding in the fall.

3 inches. I'm a finey with lots of fine hair, and yes, my fine hair is thinner than the individual ply of a 2-ply sewing thread. I checked :). I don't expect that my ponytail will ever increase in thickness, but one of the side benefits is that I don't have the weight/heaviness issues that people blessed with thicker, heavier have to contend with.

Naamah
January 23rd, 2010, 05:31 PM
3.5" Average, I think. I wouldn't mind a bit more thickness, but I'm fine with what I have.

Wicked Princess
January 25th, 2010, 08:19 AM
Ah, how I long for a 5" thick ponytail. I feel as though I could do so much MORE if my hair were thicker.

I answered 4" or under because my thickness can change. Right after washing, and for the first two days, it's 4". After it begins to get a little greasy and I've begun adding oil application after oil application to it, it shrinks, and is around 3.5"!

January 30th, 2010, 04:57 AM
My ponytail is 3 inches exactly. i wish i had a 4.5 inch or 5 inch ponytail. sigh! but at least i have hair, my 17 year old niece has lost about half her hair since she was 13 and even though she has done almost everything but go to a doctor or try some nasty experiment for hair growth like putting cow poop on her head for 30 mins. honestly she was told to do that 3 years ago! none of her hair has grown back. she has a 1 inch ponytail circumference right now.

We have tried herbs, oils, peppers, thickening poo, regrowth poo, etc. anything i have found here to regrow hair has failed! she has not tried rogaine for women but she is getting desperate. and doctor's are so expensive and so is meds.

FrizzBall
January 31st, 2010, 11:39 AM
Mine is 5' but I never measured it straitened so I guess that's not my true thickness? My hair doesn't feel thick at all because it looks so flat at top...It use to be 4' so it's thickening up or I'm just measuring incorrectly.

My hair is 2,6 inches. From I was 11 - 14 it got thicker (didn't measure my ponytail circumference back then though). I just wish my hair was thicker. If it was about twice as thick, I'd be happy. Blah... Why, just why wasn't I born with thick hair, when I love it so much? It's unfair :(

I hate going with cheese but I had to on this poll. I can't seem to get an accurate measurement. When it is wet it is 3.5-4in and when dry it is a bit less (who knows why that could be?) When I add coconut oil it plumps it up significantly to about 5 in.

Whats fair got to do with anything in the genetics game? You love it because you lack it - most thick hairs I know like my sister resent it. Thin it out, even! Grass is greener and all that jazz.

Wow... the last time I measured my ponytail circumference was when I joined LHC over a year ago. If I remember correctly, it was slightly less than 2". I measured again just now and it's 3 1/4". Still, I don't consider a 2" ponytail curcumference to be thin, by any means! My hair has always appeared very thick, even when I went through a year of increased hair loss due to a bad perm. People on this forum care waaaay too much about thickness, IMO. Just be thankful for what you've got, for heaven's sake... I have a friend with a 3/4" ponytail! 2" is NOT thin.

Edit::disbelief I just had an epiphony. I was trying to figure out how my circumfance grew or what I'd done differently in the last month and I realized.. Oh! I switched out my hairbrush with the natural bristle/nylon bulb mix for one with synthetic bristles that mimic natural boar bristles- no bulbs. I think changing out my brush made all the difference! I did notice I shed quite a bit less with my new brush.. now I realize just how much less. :surprise:

Measuring the circumference of my own ponytail was harder than I would have thought! I measured this morning to put it into my profile and as far as I can tell, it's about 4 1/8 inches. That was just before I washed it; it had been about a week and it definitely feels thicker when it's really clean, so I might measure again tonight out of curiosity (after it's dry.)

Hedera
April 5th, 2010, 02:09 PM
Mine is hovering between 2,5" and 2,75" at the moment.

It was about 2,5" when I joined the LHC, then slowly increased to nearly 3"; oddly enough, getting bangs / fringe did not seem to make a difference at all (they're not really thick).

Unfortunately, though, I lost quite a lot of thickness due to a shed (mucking around with different / no BC pills for a while) last year, so now I'm more or less back where I started.

There's quite a bit of flyaways and fuzz though, so I'm hoping to creep up to nearly 3" again eventually!

Amelia, I have this exact same problem all the time! I found a page that lets you convert all sorts of units of measurement between metric and imperial:

You can do it in google too. Just enter "12.5cm in inches" and it'll come up with the answer
12.5 centimeters = 4.92125984 in
followed by the normal search results. works for celcius to farenheit, liters to gallons, etc... extremely useful at times

One of the factors that affects circumference is the texture of your hair.

Mine will vary greatly whether I wear it more straight, or I let the waves/curls come out when I completely let it air dry.

Those of you with very straight hair, don't feel badly if your measurement is less than those with a lot more waves and curls. :afro:

I voted 3 inches or under. It was 7 cm exactly when I measured my freshly combed hair just now.

While I was growing it out I went through this weird stage that drove me nuts to the point that I busted out the thinning sheers to make it look presentable. I'm sure these hairs will catch up sometime but right now it's not long enough to make it all into the pony. I also have bangs that aren't long enough to get in there.

My guess is that my circumference would be around 4-5 inches if all of it reached that far.

I'd have loved to try this with my 8 year old daughter's hair, but a couple of days ago she had it cut off to her chin and undercut, because she finds it so hard to keep it untangled  Even when her hair was shoulder length I could still spend over half an hour detangling it after a wash (even with lots of conditioner left to soak in!!). I understand as tight as possible. I actually fixed the pony with a tiny silicon elastic prior to measuring. My hair is voluminous. Maybe very sleek type doesn't need that.
And don't you be upset with figures :flower: First, pony circumference can vary significantly depending on how fine or coarse your hair is. You may have a lot of hair but very fine one. And second, beauty of hair doesn't consist of thickness only.

Hmm, I hadn't considered how damaged most of my hair is. I was doing a search and destroy today and noticed that a lot of my hair is rather thin as the damage gets worse down the hair. That I've experienced shedding for a few reasons on and off over the past couple of years.

My current ponytail circumference is just over 2.25 inches, although I'll admit that I haven't been taking the greatest care of my poor hair (and have had several bad bouts with trich in the last few months, which will definitely thin things out significantly). I'm hoping with better care and time spent relatively free of pulling it'll bounce back to 2.5-2.75 inches, which is about as thick as my ponytail measurement has ever been for my ridiculously fine hair. I'm also planning on switching to a boar bristle brush and taking a vitamin supplement to help my sad little head recover.

When I do mine, it is compressed as much as it can be. Not sure why everyone wouldn't be doing that.

:afro:

My ponytail measure in at 3.5-3.75 inches, but I can't get all my hair into the pony tail yet! I think it'll be more once my hair grows out some more and I can add my "bangs" and the bald patched on top finish filling in and get long again too!

It seems to me that it should be tight. At least that's the way I've always done it.

I'm curious how tightly you are supposed to gather your hair for measuring. If I gather my hair without pinching it down tightly, it's about 3.5in. But I can get it down to 2in with pressure. It's odd, because everyone always comments on how thick my hair is. It would appear it isn't as thick as I thought, which isn't a bad thing... but it changes how I describe my hair.

I have fine, straight hair so my pony tail really isn't all that thick.

My current ponytail diameter is 3.5 in (9 cm, more or less, measured tight), which is a bit more than last year (yay!!), because now I'm taking proper care of my fine hair, I suppose. So thanks, LHC :).
Wow, I've just seen that 10 cm is the starting point for 'thick' hair according to the 'How thick is 'thick'?' thread...That actually makes my 'unbearably-not-thick-enough hair' very close to ii/iii! Who would have thought it? :)

I couldn't help but notice that between 2 and 4 inches makes up the vast majority of the poll so far. :-) Makes sense, given that is supposed to be th average. But those of us between 4 and 5 seem to make up a sizable group also. And no one is over 7"? That makes me sad.

Does anyone else get sad/annoyed when people with thicker hair than you bemoan it's thinness? I've got 2.5 and I know there are people thinner than me too.:(

Why does that make you sad?
