Ok so it's about a year and a few months untill I'm getting married but I'm already thinking about hairstyles.
For me, I'm going for a lovely elvenish look, so I'll be looking for something that wil embrace my length and look lovely and flowing. Maybe even a circlet :D Yay shiny new hair toys to look forward to.
For those who have been married/bridemaided/guested what sort of do's did you do for the ceremony?
Did you like it or would you love to have had a different style?
I remember my mothers hair when she got married, it was a short permed poofball, very mid 90's and a little scary.

I wanted a half up and half down style but I realized that my shoulder length hair really didn't look good with it. I wound up with my hair in a curly bun- the kind where it's mostly ponytail but the ends are curled and pinned up to give you the illusion of a much larger amount of hair. Put a tiara in and a cathedral length veil and I was set.
I'm somewhat ambivalent to my hairstyle at the time. I did a trial and a run for my bridals before the wedding all with the same stylist and despite my disinterest- she insisted on putting in a couple of "lowlights". Very subtle she assured me. Very chic. Absolutely necessary for beautiful wedding hair. I turned her down at the trial but due to other circumstances (my future mom in law was in the hospital unexpectedly) I was distracted on the phone and before I realized what was going on she had already started putting my hair into highlighting wraps. I was too surprised to tell her to take it back and I wound up with light blonde hair instead of my natural dark blonde/light brown (it's actually darkened further in the years since to a nice light/medium brown).
Now, I'd done far worse to my hair than a heavy hand at the highlighting but I've just never chosen to go lighter than my natural color- I prefer to go darker... so I look at the pictures and the light haired girl in them always seems a little off. Not bad- I look just fine with blonde hair- just odd.
I'd probably have done the exact same hairstyle. It was the most flattering style available (Sure I'd love to have my hair as long as it is now back then but I hadn't started growing it out.) and was comfortable and pretty with my dress/veil. I'd probably have done without the highlights though.

A former boyfriend's daughter is a beautiful girl with knee-length silvery-blonde straight hair.
She got married in the late afternoon in the gazebo in Old Town Albuquerque. It was a summer wedding. She wore a very simple long white gown, there was a circlet of flowers on her head, and her hair was completely down, in stunning long ringlets. It apparently took her hairdresser all day long to do her hair, and more care was taken getting her *hair* out of the car than her dress *lol*, but the effect was INCREDIBLE - she was absolutely gorgeous, she looked like an elven princess.

mmm when I got married 2years ago, I had an updo for the actually ceremony, but I had wedding pictures taken about a month earlier, and my hair was down and flowing... well actually the extensions were down and flowing... but it was kinda of elvish looking i think.

I had a large silk flower on the left side of my head, slightly below the ear. I really liked it, but it wasn't feasible for the actually ceremony because I wanted to show off my wedding gown, both the front and back so the hair had to go up.

Not married quite yet, but I'm planning on plopping the night before the wedding (basically sleeping with a tshirt on my head so it's all curly the next day) and pinning back the top half in two simple knots.
I like it because it's simple, up enough to be out of my way, down enough to show off my curls and length, and easy so I can do it myself, which means it's cheap and that I know I won't be having curling irons and hairspray and all that stuff on my hair that day. Sure it's just one day and all that, but I prefer it this way.
My avatar is actually a pic of the trial run I did a while back.

I was married in October, and I washed my hair that morning (a must, unfortunately, because it down poured the entire weekend) and let it air dry, then put it up in caruso curlers. After taking those out, I then put a bumpit in at my crown, and put it half up/down with a barrette and a few pieces framing my face.
It was probably the most activity my hair had ever seen ;-). I straightened my bangs with a straightener (bad, girl, bad!) but that proved to be pointless due to aforementioned rain. It frizzed and curled (and stuck straight up) as soon as i walked out the door - it made for some lovely photos.

Kitsune, you look gorgeous!!
And that's fairly close to how I plan to wear my hair should I opt to wear it down.
Should I wear it up, I plan on either a side bun with a nice fat flower, or some kind of mass of curls on top my head with sparklies in it :)
I haven't done my dress shopping nor selected a venue, hence the uncertainty :p

Do you have your dress yet? The style of your dress (and other accessories you pick up) might help you figure out how you want to style your hair and what kind of elvin you're looking for (ie: something like Lord of the Rings, or something a bit more wild/whimsical.)
Personally, the weddings I've been in or gone to have all been intricate updo's or partial up-do's with wonderful curl. They were all very pretty, but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.

We have hair that is about the same length and I'm completely lost as to how I'll be wearing my hair to prom. I wear my hair down and straight every day but then curls don't work and I've work a half-up half-down style to like, three quincenearas (spelling?) and last year's prom so...I'm in a rut, as well.
I know curls don't work because of my previous prom.

My wedding was heat styled...curled with a flat iron by a hair stylist. Damaging yes....but I was still super happy with the results LOL I had it half up:

Really pretty. My hair was curled with a flat iron, too. That poor lady had to style 33 inches of super-thick hair in an hour. I gave her a pretty generous tip.

I went with a victorian-esque hair do for my wedding. For my high school prom though I went as an elf princess and had my hair styled in a half-crown braid. :-)

I got married a little over 3 years ago, and I did the half up, half down thing. My hair was a little longer than waist length then (I had it curled more for the updo, so it was shorter.)

For my friend's wedding I was a bridesmaid, and I did victorian-like updo. A flip-through (topsy tail) with the tail braided and then tucked up into the opening created by the flip-through. I think I have a picture somewhere. For my senior prom, I did a half up with a bun and a tiara.
For my own wedding, which unofficially is coming up at about the same time, as long as things go well financially this year, I'm not 100% certain. I want to have either a Renaissance themed wedding or Medieval/Renaissance/Fantasy/Anything goes kind of thing with mixed styles. I was thinking I might curl my hair, or perhaps do a sock bun with the excess hair braided with ribbon and allowed to hang down. Right now I'm really leaning with some sort of half up with everything curled and the up part kind of spraying out a tiara.

I haven't been married yet but I think the half up half down look that Buttercup02 and Lady Jennifer had is a pretty good option. I've been to about 6 weddings in the past two years and many women opt for that style, it looks great on everyone! The only downside is you may need heat to get that look but at least it's just for one day :)

I love that photo! You must have some gorgeous wedding photos :) And of course, your hair looks fantastic as well!
DanielleRenae, Such a shame that your hair fell out of it's curls, the were quite pretty.
shadowclaw, Your bridesmaid hairdo sounds really pretty, I love the Victorian up-do look.
When I had my graduation, the hairdresser didn't know many updo's for bsl hair so she gave me a weird french roll that stuck really far out of my head.
I love looking at everyones wedding photos. So pretty! And everyone looks so happy.
The dress that I'm looking at getting is a simple dress, no beading or lace. It flows like lotr dress with long sleves, but it's nicely fitted at the waist. I'm looing around for some beatufil vintage broaches to repurpose as haitclips for my bridesmaids and myself.

oh... I just came across this website that sells LOTR, celtic, renaissance inspired jewellery. Including wedding circlets. They look pretty cool and will probably go well with your elvish looking gown.
There is a hair wrap which looks very nice in a half up half down do.

I had my hair half up half down and curled for my wedding. For my brother's wedding when I was a bridesmaid I had my hair put up in a plain bun (the bride had short, thin hair so I didn't want my style to overtake hers).

I'm sure it's been said or thought of, but maybe look at Liv Tyler's Lord of the Rings do http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/data/500/lord-of-the-rings-photo-xxl-lord-of-the-rings-6228668.jpg.
I also love the Sophie's hair in Mama Mia - from memory it just has loads of flowers in it and left long http://weddingbellsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/sophie-mamma-mia-2.jpg.

That's similar to what my fiance Kari wants to do for our August wedding. Her hair should be about 23-24 inches long. Wish it would be longer!

We aren't "officially" engaged, however I'm sure I'll do something a lot like those pics of liv tyler and sophie. I think we're going for 1.5 years out? maybe 2 though I really hope 1.5. I'm a bit past bsl right now, hopefully I'll be tailbone then? with flowers, a veil, tiara or coronet, not sure. I'm thinking probably a veil and flower crown, but I'll have to try it out.

I'm either doing a half up or all down. I don't want to wear a bun because my fiance likes it loose! I haven't finalized my dress yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing an outdoor ceremony by our lake in town. there is a beautiful island nature park there and that was where our first date was!

I'm planning on doing something like this for my wedding in May:

But my hair is only maybe 1/2" longer than this right now, so it'll look pretty different:

I've been planning on wearing my hair down, but I'm undecided whether to try to put any curl into it.
:/ Heat-curling of any kind falls out in less than an hour (sometimes 15 minutes!!), and pin/rag/curler curls that I have to sleep on fall out in 2-3 hours.
I <3 my hair with curl in it though, and would love to have really loose, long spirals under my veil. If only I could figure out how to keep them all day!
ETA: Hair sprays and gels (that I've tried-- all commercial products; I haven't tried any natural stuff) just make my hair gunky/crunchy and don't hold the curls up either... My hair seems to demand to be as 1a as possible!

FWIW, My hair has ALWAYS been 1a for as long as I can remember... After going no-poo, I have a slight wave in my hair than was previously non-exisitent! Maybe getting rid of cones or going no poo would have the same effect on your hair?

There are a few natural hair-spray recipie's on the board you can try.
I'm thinking of a half up lace braid on each side of my hair clipped at the back with a really nice vintage brooch. Perhaps a few jewels twisted into my hair.
I've decided to not have a veil. All of the women in my family for the past few generations haven't had one and I've never really like having things tickle my face.
On a side note, here's the dress that I've been looking at:

That's a BEAUTIFUL dress! I like the way the model's hair is styled, too. You could totally weave in some pearls or something in there...

I tried no-poo for about 4 months and my hair didn't like it. :( No change in texture either, my hair is stubbornly 1a. (Oh how I was hoping though!!) I am slowly transitioning my hair away from my old routine (haven't done it this way since before Sept. 09) of wash every single day and condition only the last 1/3 of it + semi-perm. dye every 2-3 months.
Now I'm washing every third or fourth day and conditioning everything but my scalp + henna every 2-3 months and my hair seems to like it-- my scalp hasn't quite adjusted yet, but I'm seeing improvement finally! (and I've only been doing this since the end of Dec.)
I don't really use anything with cones in it either, as they tend to make my hair not only straight but limp. Thanks for the suggestions though!
I have been thinking about trying to make some flax seed gel to hold curls, but it seems like only curlies and wavies use it... I'm wondering if any straighties have had success putting curl into their hair using it (like with rag curls or those soft, bendy foam rollers).
