Any suggestions on how to self trim collar bone length hair? (My hair is all one length and I'm only interested in doing a dusting - not really trimming to remove length)

I've had a bad experiences and am ready to go back to self trimming but I want to start now and not wait until BSL.

You mean ...only trim splits and don't touch the rest?
I can't really pull the very back of my hair around to be able to see any splits....
Do you use mirrors?

You can use mirrors if you have one you can rest somewhere angled at the other. Does it really need a dusting or could you wait until it's a little longer?

I have trimmed my CB-length hair using Feye's method and a mirror. It works! I have even trimmed my hair when it was much shorter than CB-length. In fact, I trimmed it as it grew out from a pixie. :blueeek: I don't necessarily recommend doing that -- it twisted my neck something awful -- but I didn't trust anyone else to do it. In retrospect, I'm really glad that I did it myself. I was able to manage the growing-out process very easily. As long as you use a mirror, you shouldn't have any problems self-trimming at CB-length.

you don't have to reach your back or use a mirror, can't you divide your hair half and bring each section to the front (or can you make two pigtails at the front?)

If the hair isn't long enough to see when you have it pulled straight between your fingers and look down (or hold it straight and tight and flip up the ends), you will HAVE to use a mirror. I'm talking about a wall mirror or bathroom mirror, not one for the back of the head, just the front so you can see what you are doing. I have found that to be a necessity -- otherwise, you can't see what you're doing (until your hair gets a little longer, that is).

okay but, how can one see splits from a mirror? i have a hard time seeing them with glasses under sunlight  or is this for just randomly cutting the ends of hair?

Hmm. I think it would be really, really hard to do S&D with shorter hair (CB and shorter). I don't do S&D, so I can't really answer that with any authority, though. I only self-trim, and have done so at almost every length imaginable (from pixie to waist length).

The self-trim method isn't "random." It is very careful and deliberate. It can be used for dusting or for bigger trims.
