View Full Version : jamilia vs. yemeni henna

Hi all, just wondering if anyone cares to chime in on their preferences on different types of henna? I have been using Jamilia henna for nearly 2 years now & am very happy with it.
However, I do like change & am curious as to if there would be a noticable change to my color if I tried Yemani henna over what I have been using until now?
Also, it is suppose to be a stronger stain (often recommended for greys) & I was curious if it would require less "processing" time than Jamilia?
I normally leave Jamilia on for 5 hrs.
See a link below to my henna website to see the color I have currently & through the years. Once on the site, click on the tab called "My Henna Journey".
Thanks

Hmm, I've only used Punjabi Prime (Jamila, I believe), and I was wondering this too...
Sorry I have no answers, but I'll be watching for answers too...

I've got a lot more color with the Dark of the Moon henna - but now I can't think of where that's from. That's vs the Jamila I got in the Indian grocery store.
But I am aiming for cleanbug's color - not sure my hair will get to that or not!

For me Yemen henna has been considerably darker, and richer. It also seems to have a cooler red cast, and builds up to burgundy MUCH faster than Jamila.

Last night I made two different batches of henna, one with Yemeni henna, and one with Punjabi Prime/Jamilla. About two hours after they were all mixed up and placed into bowls of hot water, I took a paintbrush and painted a Y on my arm with Yemen henna, and a J on my arm with Jamilla henna. After two minutes the Y was 2-3 times darker than the J. Which either means Yemen releases dye quicker or has a higher dye content.
Another difference between the two: mixed Yemen has the consistency of that Gak stuff Nickelodeon sold in the 90's (http://heydoyouremember.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/gakslime.jpg). It likes to stick to itself in stretchy clumps. Mixed Jamilla is more the consistency of stirred yogurt.

I've used Jamila for over 2 years. It was the first henna I tried; I was satisfied with the results so I stuck with it until I needed to replenish and they were out.
I purchased Yemen instead and converted instantly.
Here's what I noticed between the two:
1) Consistency/mixing
Yemen tends to become "wetter" and holds more liquid than Jamila.
Visually it looks like brownie mix (mmmmmm brownie mix!) where as my Jamila mix looked more like yogurt.
I was able to use less Yemen (about a 1/2 pack) than a typical Jamila mix.
Yemen was grittier while Jamila was more like a fine dust.
2) Easy of application
I found the wetter/brownie like consistency of Yemen was easier to get down to the roots where you kind of have to push Jamila into the root area.
3) Easy of removal
Yemen was a brat to get out and it's hard to tell when you have it all out. The first two times, I found I had to rinse further after I had my hair in a towel.
Used about 3/4 bottle of cheap condish to remove.
Jamila was always a breeze to remove. It usually only took one condish slather and a good rinse to remove.
4) Result
Yemen has a darker orange stain than Jamila and had a faster dye release time.
Although I can't provide exact stats since I didn't keep checking it.
Overall - I personally prefer Yemen dispite the issue with removal.
I used the last of my Yemen stock last month and was unable to reorder so it looks like I'll be using Dark of the Moon for the next 6 months!

Hi there
I started off with Jamila 2009 and switched to Yemeni 2009 when I researched and found that Yemeni produces a richer truer red instead of the orangish i got with Jamila 2009. I'm happier with the colour results :)
I also switched to Yemeni because it takes less time to achieve dye release (3-4 hours instead of 12+ hours), the stringiness appealed to me as well.

I took a look at your hair updo album. I love the color you're getting! Just wondering what your natural color is? I'm guessing that your natural color is slightly lighter than my non-greys. Mine is medium to dark brown.
I think I am going to try yemen henna next time i order. How long do you leave the yemen on?

I want to try a shampoo bar from her too. Can't wait! I'll be hennaing every week now just to use up what I have in the freezer. LOL.

as you can see there is no evidence of my highlighted root line since i hit full satiation point (won't get darker)
It's behaved like a filler.
I henna now 3 hours concentrating on roots with 100 grams and the rest smeared along the length after which isn't really priority now as it won't budge in colour anyway which isn't a problem but i was surprise as many people complain about how dark there henna has got. I just guess every persons hair behaves differently to it.
I have no idea how it would behave on grays (weather or not it would fill in the same manor when hitting full satiation) and looking at my genetics i won't know anytime soon.

Oh I love the colour of your hair Rach! That photo makes me think seriously about hennaing my entire head again rather than just my ponytail (i cant stand the orange by my face :))
Ive used Jamilia a few times and had good results but have yemeni on as i type :) It certainly stained my hands quicker than the jamilia but will have to report back once I rinse :)

I'm considering trying the Yemen when my Jamila runs out, since I've settled in to a nice deep auburn and find root touch-ups frustrating with the Jamila - I have to do two applications to match my roots to the length, or I get too much of a color line.

Rocketdog, from what I've seen the yemeni should take care of that for you. It does have much stronger dye deposit than the Jamila or almost any other henna I've tried - I've used PP, Jamila and Rajasthani.

How many applications did it take for you to reach full saturation point, Rach? Was it different with your unhighlighted bits than with your highlighted bits? My starting color seems similar to yours, except I had the brunette roots for a few inches and then instead of highlights everything was bleached. Unlike you I can see the demarcation line of unbleached and bleached, especially in photos and as the henna begins to fade. I'm on application six right now, but only recently have I been hennaing frequently so the first three hennas didn't build much color.
I'm hoping that for me full saturation means I'll have a color similar to yours, which is definitely not too dark for me.

I am inclined to say that with your hairs darker starting point the differences will be negligible (and i find that freezing and thawing levels the playing field of pretty much all the hennas I have tried). That being said I have tried Yemen, Henna for African hair from H4H, Punjabi Prime, and Jamilla. No one else can really notice a difference. i see a slightly different cast and keep going back to the henna for African hair, but like i said, the differences are negligible.
Oh, and I tend to leave it on for fours hours.

I'm not sure how many applications to be honest and the black streaks hung around longer which was more of an issue with me till they faded and i didn't fancy stripping them out and waited it out.
blond steaks darkened and blended in in the end.

I had been considering trying Yemen next order. I have only done BAQ henna once and that was Jamilla. I have 200g still to use up (roughly two whole head apps for me) so I better start using it so I can order some Yemen. The darker colour is a bit closer to what I actually want.

I will try yemen to see if it covers a little better. I do notice that after a root touch up, the greys (now red) are a little lighter than the roots that have got "hit" more than once.
Maybe Yemen henna will darken them a little more on the first app.

I'm covering greys with Yemeni henna and I like it far better than the Jamila. I ordered a kilo, i think it was, and have been keeping it in the freezer. It's coming out to something like $5-7 per application and as has been said, dye release is more intense.
I mix the henna with lemon juice to yoghurt consistency, cover, let the dye release 10-12h, and install into a squeeze bottle for root touchups. I squeeze it on, cover my head, leave it all on for a couple hours and then shower/shampoo as usual.
I picked up some dried amla at the local ethnic store. I tried to grind it and it broke my coffee grinder thingie so I've boiled the amla and then puréed it so to add to my henna mix later on. I'm interested to see whether the amla browns off the henna. I have in the past used indigo mix which I was pleased with but then I'm running out of space in the freezer to store all my dye stuff ;-)

I have not any grey but will be intersested in what you decide.. I have been using Jamila in my hair form the begining.. Now mind you I have only done 4 full henna application since I started in Aug 08, I just recelty used the Jamila 09 and found it gave me fire red.. In the sun and brillantly I might add too.. HUBBY LOVES IT...
I only leave my Henna mix on for 2 hrs if I do whole head and thats even if I mix fresh or frozen..
but then it may also be the way I cure it to , but who knows.. But my base before I used henna was Blonde with dark blonde ... It has only darkend slightly but not to bad
will see if I can get a good pic of what it is now

I've used both Jamila 2009 and Yemeni 2009 and discovered that Jamila is more orangy than Yemeni; actually Yemeni turns my silvers a ruby colour while the Jamila made them go orange.
This is Yemeni on my silvers:

I've done 2 full-head applications of Yemeni and I'm now going to do glosses once a month so that I can fine-tune the buildup. My goal is auburn, not burgundy :).

I do. I've had great success with slopping the mud on my head, tying a couple plastic bags over it onto my head, wrapping a destroyed t-shirt around the whole thing, and then sleeping in it (I put another destroyed t-shirt over my pillow instead of a pillowcase "just in case." I've never had any leaks using this method, and that way the 8-12 hours I have the mud on my head do not interfere with my day. DH has been very understanding about this. He tolerates this when he did not tolerate the same when I was using the LUSH Caca Marron or Caca Rouge. The LUSH stuff is much more strongly scented and he couldn't stand the smell.

Depends how dark you want it. If your ok with it getting dark. Have it as long as you can cope with it under cling film for example, to keep it moist . Henna can feel heavy after a time. I've slept with on once :) and it feels like you get your moneys work out of that application.

My natural colour is ash brown with about 5% silver and I've been hennaing for one year. I started off with lush rouge/marron and then moved onto Jamila and then Yemeni. For my next mix, I'll be going for 50/50 Yemeni Rajasthani with a little indigo.

I am planning to get some Yemeni henna from hennaboy as I have heard all good things about it, and further looking into what I used back in 2003 it turns out that was Yemen henna too!
The main reason I have chosen to use yemeni is because of the deep reds and burgundys which are reported, so it surprises me to read some people reporting here that it does not do this:
I'm using Yemeni henna from HennaSooq, I specifically asked her which henna would be least likely to go burgundy/purply, and she recommended Yemeni.
I would describe the full saturation that rach's yemeni has given her as being in the burgundy range that henna can bring.
Or perhaps I misunderstand the advice from Hennasooq?

I am so thankful to have found this thread! I just ordered some Yemeni henna from Henna Sooq yesterday and I was looking for a little reassurance because I had been really torn between Jamila and Yemeni for my first application. My hair is medium ashy brown with just a few sparse grays (I'm 27) and I wanted something that would a) cover those annoying couple grays b) be a rich red and not orange and c) won't need a million applications.
After looking at your pics and reading your posts I feel like I made the right choice and I can't wait to do it. So even though I'm not the OP, thank you so much for all of your posts on this and thanks cleanbug for asking the question!

I just did my hair friday with yemeni...same place you ordered from
I left it on for five hours
After washing it was pretty bright...my kids called my daniel cook
Lol
I started with blonde hair..chemically colored....that i dyed medium brown to get a darker base
Since friday..my hair has only gotten darker and more beautiful
It is not orangy anymore...but just stunning...hard to describe..but like deep burgendy..like wine.
It also depends on the lighting
I have a pixxie cut...that i am hoping to grow out in the next two years
I love this henna ...
I mixed it with chamomille tea and some lemon juice as well as some lavender drops:cheese:

Hello! I found this forum about Yemeni and Jamila henna.. I am new to henna-ing and have only done one application of Light Mountain burgundy henna. It's not pure henna because it has henna and indigo in it. It's not body quality either. I loved the results I got, except it isn't as purple as I'd like. I'd like to acheive a burgundy on the more purple side. I was thinking of mixing pure henna with pure indigo, and using chamomile tea with a little bit of coconut milk for the benefits. Does anyone think this will work to achieve the results I'm looking for? Or what do you think will work best? Thanks so much in advance!

Henna + indigo often is used for more brown results than for burgundy, but mostly henna with a little indigo might be burgundy-ish. Multiple applications of henna will go more toward the color you want. You should also look at the cherry cola henna thread, where they're mixing it with hibiscus.
