Hi beautiful people,

So this morning I put velcro rollers in my hair, left them in for an hour and took them out and adored the result. Unfortunately, my hair fell after half an hour. About a year ago I gave up hairspray because of the alcohol in it, so I was wondering what's an alternative to hairspray? I usually don't style my hair this this and therefore I don't need it, but how does any one here that's avoiding alcohol get their style to hold?

Thanks :)

PS. Putting them in wet wouldn't work because they don't dry. Even when it's overnight. Grr.

PPS. Sorry for the typo in the title. How do I change that?

Hi I have a recipe for" Voluptuous Volume Spray"
For a night out, sometimes I prefer big teased hair to my usual sleek look. This spray helps create volume in my hair and thicken it at the roots. All I need to top if off is some teasing and a little hairspray.
1/4 cup water
3 tbsp white vinegar
2 tbsp honey

Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to thoroughly combine.
To use, spray it onto damp hair and work it through from the root to ends. Don't rinse it out;
just style your hair as usual.
yield: 8 1/2 ounces

Giovanni makes a hair spritz which holds like hairspray, but I'm not sure if it has alcohol in it or not.

Have you tried pre-gelling it with Aloe Vera or flax gel?

I love aloe vera gel.

I've been making my own hairspray for several months now, and I've found it works better than store-bought, and doesn't build up in my hair. I cut a whole lemon into circular slices, put the slices in my smallest saucepan and cover them with about a cup and a half of water, bring it to a boil, then simmer for a couple hours. Cool the resultant mixture (which for me boils down to maybe a half a cup), strain it through a tea strainer, and store it in a squirt bottle. I add a bit of isopropol alcohol to keep the mixture from spoiling, but I've read you can also add a splash of vodka for that purpose as well.

How about a hard-hold gel? I like Max Green Alchemy because of the natural ingredients. I have some in my hair right now. ;)

Add it to damp hair, style your hair where you want it to go, let it air dry crunchy, then scrunch out the crunch. I love this gel... it gives really good hold but my hair doesn't feel sticky or hard after I scrunch out the crunch.

When I was desperate to hold a style during the holidays, I tried water and sugar in a spray bottle for the finished style. I wouldn't want to comb that out of rollers, especially Velcro ones.

For the curls to hold better I use aloe & water mixture while I am putting rollers in. I spray once or twice, so the hair doesn't get damp just a little moist.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks everyone, I will definitely give all those a try. How do I bye the aloe? Just the gel from the chemist?

Yes, from the chemist. It's really cheap, moisturising, doesn't build up & works brilliantly at taming frizzies & flyaways too!

Re: aloe vera gel- just make sure you get just the aloe vera, not the kind with lidocaine in!

I use the Fruit of the Earth clear gel or pure aloe juice (from the plant or the pharmacy bottle)
