Is there a thread already? If there are, please direct me to it, otherwise, do you wish to show me your fairytale ends? :flowers::D

I could not find a thread devoted just to pics of fairy tale ends. So, here's mine, from December '09. Please never mind the hair cleavage at top. Also, this is my hair with bun waves, so it appears to be wavy, but it's not naturally.

wish i could have them. my hair somehow grows into blunt cut hemline, even after the most layered haircuts :/

Here are my shorty "fairytale ends" - hair hasn't been trimmed since I started growing, never bothered with cut hemlines, so this is the result and I love it! And I am so close to BSL, still chugging along at an inch per month.

Hm, I think I have some kind of fairytale ends, besides my short hair. This is a picture of my hair with bun waves, seven days after I've washed it.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4664&pictureid=59920

Since I'm planning to trim only an inch in 2010 and some S&D, my fairytale ends will developt more, I guess.

My hair looks more U-shaped in this one because my dress is so bright it makes the ends hard to see.

I adore everyone's fairytale ends. :D

I was just looking at my ends tonight thinking that I'd best trim them off as they were looking scraggly (in my eyes) and less than pretty but now I'm going to hang on to them!!!

How does one obtain fairytale ends? Using only S&D for damage control?

Pretty much, Messyhair. I never do more than microtrim with a very occasional S&D. I would like a more blunt hemline when I get to knee, but I know I will never have a truly straight-across or U-shape hemline because of taper.

After seeing all the beautiful pics of fairytale hair I think i have to cancel my appointment with my hairdresser and start s&d. I just need a good scissor. One just cuts the damage, right? Splits and white spots? Not easy to "spot" in my hair though.:p

What beautiful pictures! I really regret my trim back in December and not just because she took off more than I wanted. I was starting to get fairy tale ends after 8 months of no trimming but I thought I needed a trim. It's hard to get used to not really trimming your hair when you used to trim it ever 3-4 months. I know as long as I'm taking care of my hair it doesn't need the trimming as often but when you've been doing it your whole life it takes a while to get used to.

That being said I think fairy tale ends are very flattering to curly hair (as demonstrated by Xandergrammy). After loosing my beginner fairy tale ends I realised how much I loved them! I'm definitely growing them back

I hope these links work. I removed my wedding pics on here to make room for other stuff, but I've still got them on my Facebook. I think my albums are public. :) Those were my fairytale ends in 2007, at probably about 38". I've since been trimming more and reshaping my hemline constantly. :p

I just think it is magnificent how people who have thick hemlines like fairytale ends...

I just realised mine actually don't look that bad, so I can share them here :D

I was also thinking about trimming my hair now and grow it to classic after it got blunt. But maybe that can wait... I want classic lenght hair :poot:

Here's mine then (And thank's so much Franny and Anje for the motivation and making me look at my fairytale ends with other eyes... :flower:)

Jannike
January 29th, 2010, 12:36 PM
I'm including mine here although it's still my signature picture. I had not had a trim here (or S&D) for 2 years and 2 months when I took this picture. So I think it should technically be fairytale ends although it's not in a v-shape, it's more like an inverted u (the sides are equally long, it's just more wavy on the right side).
I had a trim some days ago though so my signature picture will probably need to be changed soon.

shows what nearly a years worth of not guiding the hem line has done to my hair.
i'm guessing this may be classed as fairly tale ends but i do S&D like this (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=146) (top section of the article) so i'm not entirely sure if it is classed as?
I do much prefer the look of it naturally V'ed

I really love this thread because it makes me realise that fairy tale ends are beautiful ! Even the name "fairy tale (or tail ?)" is nice ! In the French forum that I attend, this kind of ends is considered as ugly and I thought this was the "norm".... We call it "pointes filasses", which means something like "dirty ends" or "badly thin ends" (if a French speaking LHCer could correct me if I'm wrong... ^^)

So, thank you for having such beautiful fairytale ends ! It looks very romantic and delicate !

Your hair looks gorgeous!
I ended up cutting my fairytale ends off a while ago, but the length is back and thicker. I'm going to let my ends do their thing a little later on in the growth process. Fairytales at APL on me just looked a little funky.
Now that I'm at BSL and with a thick hemline I'm just going to quit the trimming from here on unless absolutely necessary.

I just got back from my aunts 50th party and saw my 10 year old cousins hair. She hasn't cut her hair for about 3 years now and is about classic. Her hair looks amazing because its really fairytaling. I think she may be close to terminal because since christmas her hair has really started to taper at the ends, but regardless of whether shes hitting terminal or not, she has a wonderful head of hair. I'm quite envious lol.

I had to go back to my archived journal to be sure of what I was doing then. I was pretty much at terminal, had been about six months S&D-only at this point, quarterly 1/4" trims for a year before that.

Dang. I miss that hair. (ETA, same hair as in my siggy. <sigh> I'm no longer quite as sure that it'll "get there again.")

Does this count as fairytale? Maybe "sort of halfway to fairytale"? I started with layers (shoulder length at start) that I S&D'd four times a year (going through the whole, hair by hair...). Also four times a year a made 0,5-1 inch trims.
EDIT: Pic is from 1996. I let it grow two more years, and chopped it of in 1998.

That looks great. Why wouldn't get there again?

That looks great. Why wouldn't get there again?

I'm maintaining at waist right now while I (oh-so-slowly!) trim off the layers from my last major damage-control trim, but even above that my length looks thinner than it did before. Part of it's because I've borrowed a teeny bit of the former length to cut in a little fringe that I'm going to keep (though I'm growing some of that back out too, from one time when I got a little bit carried away, figure it'll be a couple of years now before that catches up.) I'm using herbs and coconut oil now too, as opposed to the baking soda/ACV & conditioner routine I'd been following when I took that pic.

Still . . . I'll be patient, wait and see.

(ETA, oh -- hardly ever S&D-ing any more either, too hard on my eyes, so my current thinking is that I may have to maintain at waist just to keep the ends more or less unsnarled.)

I have to say since LHC I now like fairtale ends.. of course didn't even know what they were before and thought it looked like someone needed a trim..I always thought I wanted a blunt hemline but I have learned to appreciate all different hemlines and with no trims in 2011 I can look at my hair in a whole new way and maybe will get those fairytail ends :)

I have fairytale ends.

I don't think my hair is terminal but it sure is shedding like I cannot believe. I have been S&Ding a lot lately to get rid of any splits and potential breaking hairs.

My aunt who is a hairdresser loves my fairytale ends. It is funny because she tells everyone else (in our family) to cut their hair but not me.

Sometimes I would like a more even hemline but I would sacrifice more inches then I care to to do that.
If I were to have a straight hemline I think I would have to maintain at my waist.
Once it gets beyond that it seems to fairytale. Probably because I get it caught in things.

Even when I was a child and my hair was almost to my knees it fairytaled.

Am I the only one who can't stand my fairytale ends? I wish I could get rid of them but I think between my severe taper and clumpy waves, it's not possible.

To me it looks like I'd need a 6" trim, which I am not about to do.

As for other pictures in this post, I think ft ends look great on all of you! Maybe it's because the part of the hair that hasn't FT'ed yet is so much longer and thicker than mine.

I like FTE as long as they don't start too soon. Hair that is, for example, mostly BSL with a very few strands past waist aren't as pretty to me as hair that very slowly tapers out to FTE.

I think my hair is increasing in its fairytaleness. Not sure I really like it, I might be cutting it to waist lenght in the new year *ghasp* But at least I know how my ends turn out when not cutting it. I really haven't gotten much in terms of split ends, which goes to show cutting every 6th week is not required.

Hi!
I started my new "hair life" in april 09. I got tired of ruining my hair with chemicals. I had cut of my shoulder length black hair into a ice blond mohawk. I did 10 bleaching sessions to achieve the color. My hair was starting to break of. Big chunks where falling of. So I made a choice, I cut of my hair and started from scratch with noo poo. And itīs the best thing I have ever done! My hair is healty and much thicker then it used to be. I wash my hair with rasul mud and sometimes applevinegar. I color my hair black with henna and indigo. And use different oils to make my hair smell wounderful. I love my new hair and I will never use products that are bad again. I want long, beautiful, healty hair and I am on my way.

After this pic was taken I cut my hair, evenly short. I was so short...

I seem to really like the fairytale ends on those with waves/curls and it really doesn't look bad at all on those with the straight hair as well! It seems to me the only factor that determines how good real fairtytale ends look is if the hair is actually healthy to the ends.

That is why I could currently not pull off this look ^^'..

How long it takes for hair to fairytale varies greatly on how your hair grows. Some people's hair grows very evenly and takes many years to show fairytales, for others they may be visibly fairytaled in a couple of months. If your hair tends to grow unevenly with some strands growing faster than others then you'll get fairytales faster.

So many questions, so much hair...

I completely forgot what I was going to post... Oh yes. My daughter-in-law let her hair grow to her knees and had fairytale ends that she decided to cut off. Then she couldn't put it in a bun because of the blunt ends. Now she's letting it fairytale again.

This was more than six months ago though, and I've trimmed since, so they're not quite to fairy taley at the moment. I love everyone's fairytales :) I like these. A LOT! Your hair is very pretty! I'm starting to think that curly/wurly hair will hold the curls all the way to the ends if they are fairytale...ing. Sort of like nature's layering (?). I notice whenever I've had a trim the curls are in shock or become angry because they just straighten right out at the ends and I do mean OUT. They stick out in all directions in defiance and resentment, but refuse to curl.

Thanks, Maddy, you're sweet.

rose.grace, I've heard other curlies say that they have that "sticking out-y"problem right after a trim, but after a bit their ends relax into more natural looking curls. Perhaps oils or some other leave-in might help induce them to curl more again.

These are some absolutely gorgeous pictures. Mine doesn't fairytale until it gets to elbow length, although the fairy tale ends are sort of thick even then but that's just because my hair is sooo thick. Elbow: that's six inches away! Elbow length is my goal; it'll be slightly above waist length.

So let me get this straight. Fairy tale ends do not necessarily mean you're reaching terminal length?

Yep, hair grows unevenly which is why they happen. It depend on the person on how long they take to form.

May be a stupid question but... can you start fairytale ends from a blunt hemline, or would it be better to start from a U or V??

I have honstly never wanted the FTE look before, BUT they've seriously grown on me. I'm not ready to get them yet, because I think blunt looks best to waist, but starting lower down they look beautiful! However, while I like blunt hair normally, I don't really like FTEs as much when they don't taper from a V or U (if that makes sense??)

I guess once I get to waist and beyond I can maybe get a U or V sort of cut and then just errm... let it grow right???

At the moment my hair looks sort of FTEish cause I lost a lot of hair and it's a bit straggly...but it's too short to rock it and honestly looks quite horrible...but maybe in a couple of years ;)

You can start from a blunt hemline. A you do is stop cutting it. If you are worried about split ends, you can S&D.

You can start from any hemline, but IMO they will "show up" more quickly if you cut it into a V-shape, and show even more quickly if you have layers.

Yeah, I was just thinking it would probably take a little longer to get my preferred fairytale look with a blunt cut, although I guess it would get there eventually?! I prefer fairytales that are more in a U...and yet some who have blunt cuts seem to fairytale when their hair is still fairly straight across the bottom.

I suppose it depends how long it takes your hair to fairytale and when it starts to taper! Probably if you're nearer terminal it tapers earlier...and I haven't a clue when or where I'd be terminal as I've never grown my hair long enough!

I don't think terminal length has so much to do with it. I think for me, it depends on how I am treating my hair an whether I get regular trims. If I don't cut my hair for a couple of years, it will taper at any length.

My hair is a solid curtain to just below shoulder length and then almost immediately goes sheer down to my tail bone. I had thought of cutting the sheer part off because it looks strange to me to have almost a line of demarcation...

Any thoughts on what the cause of this could be?

Have you had a major shed in the past 3 years or so? I have that "curtain then see through" look a bit becuase if sheds and regrowth. So if the shoulder length curtain moves down in length then it's probably it.

If your hair has been that way for a long time, check for any deficiencies (vitamin, mineral). Otherwise you might jsut have a variable terminal length like that. I have a whole bunch of hairs that don't grow past collarbone length too.

Girliness
February 6th, 2011, 07:49 PM
I never even knew a "major shed" was possible, so I can't say whether or not that is what happened. I guess I will have to try to keep a record of how long the curtain is and pray that it grows.

Out of morbid curiosity, what is the shortest known terminal length?

Well technically the shortest known is bald, having vellus hair only. But I have heard of shoulder length terminal lengths.

Oh, how I hope that's not the case here... I was never able to get my hair past shoulder length before I started wearing hair sticks - I am a bit scared by this. Going to tell myself that the abuse I put it through using too high of a heat setting on my dryer and using it WAY too close on top of the flat iron I used for the past 5 years are to blame, cross my fingers and pray fervently...

My hair is pretty fine, too. Does that have anything to do with shorter terminal length? Having less hair than some?

the heat treatment would do it, especially on fine hair that can be more fragile. As for terminal length, it varies. I've seen people with fine thin hair here at classic and knee so that's not the only determination.

Classic length is hair to the under behind leg crease, commonly seen in classical paintings, hence the name.

Hello ladies

I have had a short conversation about fairytale ends the other day. To my understanding fairytale ends are the opposite of blunt, straight hemlines. Yet, I never associated them with thin hair. Just naturally grown hair without trims, sometimes forming little curls or just part into a number of little "tails" over your neck. However this girl said fairytale ends are nothing but thinned out, linty hair which are in need of a good trim.

I love my fairytale ends but now I am in doubt as to whether give them a good trim to make my hair look fuller and thicker.

Your opinions please!

Great thread!! I have not had the time to look at all pages yet, but the photos here are stunning! I'll post some pictures of my fairytale ends tomorrow - I'm thinking about a U-shaped trim, though, I like wavy/curly fairytale ends much more than my stick straight ones. Maybe with a blunter cut the hemline would look thicker...The ends look so thinnish sometimes...:(Otherwise, I love fairytale ends :)

You know, fairytale ends are kind of like long hair in general-- to some people it's lovely and natural and worth encouraging, and to others it's actually yucky, gross, and unkempt. I may be exaggerating a bit, but really, there's a wide gulf of opinion on having years-old, natural-looking hair hanging off your head. If you love 'em, keep 'em. There's no one right or wrong on hair-- it's a preference and no matter what you do, some people are going to dislike it. This is the WE LOVE FAIRYTALES thread, view the whole thing for inspiration! Such lovelies here! Then see if her comments have a little less sway...

I read somewhere that to get to terminal, you had to have fairytale ends. I wish I could remember where.

One thing I have battled with myself was the neverending struggle to have a blunt hemline. Well, my hair naturally tapers (around the nape of my neck) from shoulder length to waist, so I will NEVER be able to have ANY real length without fairytaling. The biggest problem that arises from the constant trimming is that my hair looks worse (IMO) with parts of it trimmed than it would with a natural looking feathering (fairytaling) to the ends. It LOOKS like I'm trying to have a blunt hemline and failing miserably - it makes it more noticeable.

This is obviously a personal decision and preference, I just thought I should give my experience with the attempt at a blunt, full hemline versus the fairytale look...

ETA: You can see the tapering I mentioned in my album - it is the only photo I have uploaded of my hair

Very pretty curls Quixii. I always like to curl my hair because I feel that fairytale ends look better on curly hair rather than my stick straight hair at times.

I generally tend to think the same about mine...but considering your hair looks so lovely, maybe my fairytaled hemline is not so bad after all! :D (some pics will be coming soon :))

For the longest time I thought those sorts of ends were quite undesirable. I've always preferred blunt ends myself, to me fairytale ends look as though only some of your hair hangs on for the whole ride down the back, while the rest fall out and never again catch up. I'm curious, however, how they received their name?

Yes!

This is what I recently posted about in the classic to knee thread. I quit trimming long ago for this reason, the ends just looked unnatural to me if I trimmed them, as I never wanted to trim all the way up the taper, so to speak. I never liked the blunt look on myself, even when I had a thicker, blunt cut hemline, it was too "clean" looking, too freshly cut looking. After I stopped cutting pretty much at all when I would trim I would have that little blunt section that I never really liked just as you describe, Girlness.

I am so glad someone else feels this way!! I thought I was alone!!:)

I was wondering if fairy tails come more easily from starting your grow out process with certain hair cuts? For example if you have layered hair when its short, then don't cut it, will it result in better looking fairy tails?

Not sure as to better looking as that varies amongst people, but they will happen faster if you don't trim. Layered short hair will grow with those layers making look more fairytaled, yes.

I have the same question! I just started my 9th month without a trim. I can see my ends starting to soften a little, but the overall look is still blunt.

The more you shed, the faster they will appear. My shed rate slows down to almost nothing in the winter but right now it's fast. I think I'll need another summer or two before my ends start to look truly wispy.

at least like this its a bit visible, is there a possibility to delete the big one??

So after new years im gonna start microrimming frequently, for now i just hope that the thickness will grow down, but most thinness is because of dye damage
