I'm trying to teach my BF to braid his own hair but he's not all that enthusiastic . He says he wants a very trough tutorial which basically says do this with this strand, turn up your hand in this direction etc. Is there anyone who has a link to such a tutorial or suggestions? :eye:

I agree with AstrayStar about youtube, there are lots of tutorials there, I have one basic braiding tutorial there myself! :)
Also, dreamweaverbraiding has got awesome tutorials, and has got a self french braiding tutorial. There the instructions are similar to what you described :)

Good luck for your BF!

I may have to check out the self-french braiding tutorial myself, although my layers are probably too short at the moment. I have always wanted to be able to do that :)

thanks:) I checked youtube but it seemed like there were only tutorials for french braids.
Unfortunately dreamweaver braiding seems to be down right now:(

Just a thought: it might be easier to teach him with yarn, or something like that. Once he knows the pattern, then you can direct him to something like Dianyla's instructions. (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=23652)

I'm with your BF!!!

I know how to braid, the pattern and how to hold it.....but not on myself! It's all upside down and backwards, and my hand doesn't twist that way, so I need to learn how to hold my hand and which finger to use and etc to do a simple braid on myself.

I haven't searched youtube yet because I've been wearing my hair curly and need to comb it out to braid it easier while I practice :)

I seperate the hair in 3 strands cross over the strand on the right over the middle, then cross the left strand over the new middle, right over new middle, left over middle...and so on

Agreed. I learnt to English braid on the three-inch tassles of a blanket; it's much easier when you can see it, then translate it to the back of your head once you're familiar enough with it.

ETA: Thanks to the Wayback Machine, here's Dreamweaver Braiding's instructions for an English/3-strand braid (http://web.archive.org/web/20080616112130/www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/basic3.htm).

As a little girl I learned to braid on a rope.
I still have issues getting my own brais to look pretty, but the fingers know their movements so it's not too much of a hassle to actually DO it.

Here is a very simple rope braid video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImcPuruQMAw). It's by a member here. Torrinspaige is the name of her Youtube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige) She does great videos which can be used by girls or guys. Check them out. I like the hauser braid for guys too. :) I have learned a lot from her. She is clear and easy to follow.
