View Full Version : Childhood hair colour and dying it in adulthood.

Reading through the thread "Why are you not happy with your natural hair colour" I realised how many of us seem to dye our hair back to approximately the colour it was when we were children. Certainly I do - my skin and hair matched until I was about fourteen (white, pink and gold) then it had to go and change for no good reason (white and a dark brown which makes the pink either disappear or turns it into a 'demonic porcelain doll' look) and I've been trying to get it back ever since - recapturing my childhood. Which also explains why my family are so encouraging of me blondifying my hair.
So I was wondering 'Does our hair changing during our teens make us more likely to dye it in latter life?'
p.s. options 1 and 4 'I want that colour back' includes those of us who want to dye it but for the practical reasons of hair health or financial health can't

Maybe... if looking at my own hair story, my hair went lighter during teen years. Now i want to dye it darker. Of course if we identify ourselves with our appearance early in life it could be true what you say. The question is if we do accept our female appearance and all the other stuff that happens in the teen yars as well.

My hair used to be white. It darkened to lightbrown.
It would be to damaging to lighten my hair to white again, like it used to be. And I like my current colour anyway
I'm pale and I think white hair would just make me look like a ghost. I like my lightbrown color.

I was born with blonde hair, which then darkened to light brown and then to very dark brown by the time I was 7 or 8.
I don't mind it, I would happily be darker and although I admire blonde hair, I prefer to have dark hair on myself.

When I was a child my hair used to be the prettiest shade of golden blonde. Then in my teens it turned more of a mix between red, dark blonde and light blonde. Horrible combination. So now I'm experimenting to see what colour I want. It's NOT my natural haircolour that's for sure!
Right now it's been almost 4 years since I last saw my natural haircolour (minus whenever I have roots). And I honestly don't plan to go natural until it turns white lol

I was blonde as a kid, and darkened with age. I did start messing with my colour before it started to do so by itself, but roots aren't supposed to be affected by colour, right?
(I have a hair history album here if anyone's curious)
As a kid I always wanted dark hair, but I can see now that it doesn't suit me very well. I' thinking about bleaching it down again, but not sure if the upkeep is worth it.

I started dyeing my hair in my teens, so I don't much remember what color it was. I vaguely remember auburn. It is still auburn, at least it was the brief period I stopped dyeing. The only thing that changed over the years is greys coming in.

My hair was a light blonde when I was little. Around the age of 3-4 it started getting darker and darker. It was medium brown when I started school, quite dark brown in lower secondary school. Since leaving school it has become a little bit lighter, and a bit redder. It's quite medium brown now.

My hair was light kind of milk chocolate when I was really young which went blonde really easily in the sun but its darkened as Ive got older. Im pretty happy with the colour it is now.

I was born with medium to dark brown hair (my mom has saved some centimeters of it). But that was when I was a baby, after that my hair got very light blonde which darkened a bit to the colour I now have. So I was born a bit like a grey horse, that lightened up, although it got a bit darker afterwards again :) but not much. I did dye over it when it darkened as I thought it looked ash blonde and I didn't want that (so I went red and then black haired then red again). But now it's all natural and I don't think it looks that grey anymore :)

I think my hair was a little lighter as a kid, but that may be attributed to more sunlight activities as well.
I know my mom refuses to believe she's a brunette, because as a child she was blonde, then she bleached and dyed her hair blonde most of her adult life. She's just now starting to dye it brunette, but she still won't accept how dark brunette she actually is. Baby steps.

I have cheese because my hair is gray and far different from my childhood colour. I have always liked my childhood colour and that is why I started to colour my hair 30 years ago. I no longer colour it because I want it gray. Ilove gray hair.

My hair has always been changing colors from meduim browm when I was a kid to more blond as a teen and now it was getting more and more red in my 20's. I like the more red and now use a henna and cassia mix to make it more so.

My hair used to be wurly and dark brown in my younger years. Now its super fine, straight, and a medium brown that is hennaed red. I just happen to like red and think it suits me, no other reasons for coloring it here.

My hair was jet black when I was born. A few weeks after that, it all fell out and grew back blonde. Then for most of my childhood and teens, it was a honey/golden/ash blonde that turned blonder or even strawberry blonde depending on the time of year. Around my early/mid-20s, it started getting much darker and became almost light brown - a decidedly ashy dark blonde that did not flatter my very pale skintone. I've always admired red hair and 2 months ago took the plunge and became a Hennahead. I don't think I will be changing for a long time - it's so much more flattering and feels like the color I should have been!

My hair was white blonde when I was a kid. Its been darkening up all my life, and finally hit "brown" somewhere in high school. I don't think I'd want the white blonde back, but the darker blonde was rather pretty. I'm not willing to dye for it though... maybe if my hair ends up solid white I might play with cassia... maybe not, dying is a bit of a pain.

Mine has basically been the same as long as I can remember it - a boring dark ash blonde. :P Not light nor bright enough for my liking, so I get highlights.
When I was very little, it was a light ash blonde, but it darkened by the time I was 2 or 3, so I don't remember it being any naturally lighter than it is now except in pictures (or in sunlight).

I remember reading in a magazine that if you want to color your hair, you'll have better results if you pick your childhood color rather than something completely different.
My hair is naturally going back to what it was as a toddler - kind of silvery white-blonde.

My hair was white-blonde as a toddler, but throughout my childhood it darkened to dark blonde/light brown. I think it reached its current colour by the age of 15 or so. I prefer it as it is. In fact, I'd prefer it if it was even darker.

As a baby, I had red hair. It turned blond later.
I have dyed my hair red in high school, but just 'cause I liked that color at the time.
I am happy with my blonde locks now ;)

When I was a little kid, my hair was very light blonde. By the time I was about 7, it had changed about halfway to brown -- I had big streaks and my dad said I looked like a zebra! By a year or two later, completely brown. Now I color with henna, so the brown parts are brown with reddish overlay and my gray streaks are red. Back to the zebra look, except now I'm a red zebra instead of a blonde zebra.

My hair was a sort of dark multi toned blonde until I was in my late teens.
Then it turned reddish blonde with darker hair mixed in underneath. My hair has always been very susceptible to sun-lightening too.
As I got older, it got darker. I dyed my hair very dark for my twenties. In my thirties, I let it go natural and my hair was reddish brown and still darker underneath.
Now, I use Henna/Cassia/ clove/etc. mixture and it's a medium brown with reddishness and some silvers.
I'd LOVE to have my childhood color back, but it would involve too much lightening, I think.

Great poll!!!!
My hair started out super blonde and then was a nice, medium shade in grade school and junior high. I would be very happy with that color back, but then again I adore my henna red too. So I voted that it changed and I dye. I have never really been happy with my "adult" natural color. *sigh*

I was born bald. :D ha
Okay When it finally grew in it was a deep brownish black with fire red highlights in the sun. You couldnt see anything but black inside or in low light but should I step out into the sun I would compare my hair to what henna looks like in dark hair with some grey.
Then as I got older it lightened to a gross ashy mouse brown. So I dyed it. A lot.
I would really love my childhood color back. :(

I went from having pin-straight black hair to dark, dark brown wavy hair after puberty. I'm happy with it now, but for years I yearned for the "black fall of silk" Asian hair of my childhood (or at least my romanticized childhood, since it was actually fairly short then in the Asian child bob and uneven with pieces cut off since I couldn't remember to take the gum out beforei fell asleep :o)
