View Full Version : Hair growth stalls

I posted in the measure in thread that my hair has grown 0 inches in the last two months. I have never had a stall in all the years I've been a member here. I probably should know the answer to this but I don't. What causes stalls? I'm frustrated because I really want to get back to where I chopped it.
Could it be my age, the big "M", thyroid (I take meds for this) or is it normal for this to happen and I just got lucky and never had it.
Any ideas? I sure could use something positive as I'm frustrated!!!! Thanks!!

I think it's pretty natural. I wouldn't worry too much about it and just keep an eye on what you're eating (lots of healthy stuff and plenty of water) and feeling otherwise.
I think measuring hair that has a bit of waves or layers is kind of hit and miss sometimes anyway.

when I start to feel like my hair is not growing I usually take and compaire and post a new length picture and I wind up proving myself way wrong...you could start with that ☺

I'm definitely not way wrong as I always measure it and not just eyeball it. I have had 0 growth. Also I'm not a wavy haired person. My hair is poker straight so my measuring (or my ds) is accurate.
Oh well I'll just hope it growths this month. I've also heard people on here say hair sometimes grows faster in the summer? Am I remembering that right?

I don't really have much to contribute in the reason why hair stalls but when I first arrived at the LHC, my hair was 25" and grew 5.5" in about seven months. It was growing about 0.75" per month. Then it seemed to stall at waist as it does for a lot of people and I only grew 2.5" in the last year it seems. Over 1.5 years, I should have grown 9" and if you look at my overall growth over that period, my hair grew 8" which would be about right given my trimming cycle so it evened itself out. Strange but true ... I know my hair grows longer in summer months and I also know that my hair has a growth spurt after it is trimmed.

True, hair grows faster in the summer and slows down in the winter. Even beard hair and thigh hair :)

I think it's because your longest hairs, which are short because you cut them, have reached the end of their growth cycles and will be shedding out. Shorter, newer hairs are growing, and soon they will become your longest hairs, then you'll see length increase.

Hair likes to tease us to get back at all the teasing we did to it. :) I always get the biggest growth after a stall...so, look for a big growth spurt soon!

My hair used to grow fairly steady and then last year it took an 6-8 month stall where it grew none or at most half an inch the whole time.

I had a bit of a stall this past month, with far less growth than normal. I've attributed it to going from a high-protein diet to having very little protein. I've started eating more protein-rich foods again, but it's too soon to tell whether it's had some effect, but you could try looking to see whether your diet has changed in the last couple of months.
I do think that quite a few people experience slower hair growth in the winter. Seems to fit with nature - lots of people have increased shedding in spring and fall, which coincides with animals shedding!

How long has it stalled for?
I would second a measuring mistake. That can happen even with very straight hair and being really exact. I'm sure it did not stall at your length, and thyroid disfunctions usually do not make the hair stall really, it can get thinner and dryer overall.
Your hair certainly does not seem dry! :flower:

Chrissy don't worry about a growth stall. i've been going through the same myself for 6 months now and have grown exactly .75 of an inch in 6 months! i've checked the measurements with 3 different people doing the measuring, dry and wet and got the same result. so i understand your frustration.
I guess we straight lasses end up stalling alot, specially if we keep measuring every time we wash (like i do. hoping for a growth spur.) but in pics i have seen the length difference so i do not worry so much. i usually get a stall on my growth when i reach waist, it stalled before waist this time. i guess for me it is the life style change, moving and working alot more this last year. plus bad eating habits (not easy to eat well when you have 20 minutes for lunch.) and you eat whatever is available.
Just relax, pamper yourself and your hair and simply take some time away from measuring. i went from measuring every time i washed (once a week ) to measuring every 3 months. it helps me relax and at the same time gives my hair the time it needs to actually grow enough for me to notice. ;) :p

Hi Chrissy,
First I totally understand where you are coming from, my hair although has had some growth compaired to previous years 2009 has to have the worst in terms of growth for me, like 2.5" in year is pretty poor!
The reasons why my growth was stunted was due to stress and poor diet. Looking at your hair id say your diet is pretty healthy, this is reflected in the shine and overal healthy appearence your hair has and to say you have a thyroid problem I too see no dryness.
Your hair is at that length though where it can rub on collars, catch on bags etc and basically its at a length where we want to put it up but are limited with updo choices yeah? so we keep it down and the cycle continues, although it is growing (you have been very long in the past so we know you can get to longer lengths) maybe the very ends are breaking?
I have noticed that since doing regular DC and using coconut oil on the very ends have helped my hair hugely in terms of preventing it breaking. I am just starting to see an increase of growth.
Maybe too both our hair is taking a break in its cycle and will re-start with gutso very soon! try not to worry about it 2010 will bring you growth im sure of it, oh and happy new year xxxx

Thanks again everyone. I will just keep taking good care of it and hope for more growth. I know it hasn't stopped.
