View Full Version : updo for a friend (pics)

My friend Kitty had a mascarade ball to go to and she trusted me with the updo.
Her hair is about hip length and pretty darn thick.
She's also the first person I converted to henna.:cheese:
Here's the style!!
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/kit1.jpg
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/kit2.jpg
I didn't get pics of each step this time unfortunately. :(
It's just a twist crown braid with some of the hair, and the hair that was left out of the braid was turned into curls. I only had to curl the last 4 inches of her hair, and then I pinned the rest to give the appearance of being curled.
I'm willing to attempt some instructions with pics on myself another night.
I'm doing a oil treatment right now, though. :eyebrows:

That looks awsome!! Will you come do mine?.... huh, huh!?? :D Or maybe just teach me - I, for some reason, cannot do a rope braid - any other kind - okay, rope braid, my brain says, 'huh'!!?? I like the height you left in the front also, I can never get my hair to do that.
Very nice.

I figured out how to do the crown braid encircling my head, but only with a braid instead of a rope twist...I can't keep the twist directions straight in my head as I go around the back. Also, my braid ended up right next to the hairline instead of back by the part. How do you get it to lie over the part? I'm sure I could do this easily on someone else, but its very tricky on myself.

You have to get the hair close to the part by holding it close to the part as you're making the braid. This way the braid is tighter and stays closer to the part. Mine didn't sit right over the part either, but it should be close. As long as it's reasonably close you can just use bobby pins to get the braid over the part. =P A three strand braid will be just as lovely a variation I'm sure.
Yay for instructions! I'm still slightly confused to the front section of the hair. Are you basically doing a french braid but making it ropes instead?
Great updo! :)
I don't really want to call it a french braid because a french braid adds hair to both sides.(They are very similar though.) It's important in this style to only add hair to one side of the braid. You make the twist, add a little hair to one strand, twist again, add a little hair to the other strand, twist again........

It's basically a lace rope braid. Lace 3 strand braids are like a french braid that you only add hair to one side as you go.

Do you mean you forget what you're twisting clockwise and anticlockwise? I always try and pick a constant and focus on that. Eg "I'm twisting towards my ear, I'm crossing towards my shoulder". Maybe think "I'm twisting towards my crown, I'm crossing towards my hairline" or vice versa (without doing it I don't know what way it would do). Does that make sense?
Thank you so much for the tutorial Elainehali! I will remember that next time I've something fancy to go to!
