I will be the first to admit that for a longhair, I am absolutely miserable at putting my hair up. I've never been much of an updo person - whether because of my wash-and-go personality or the fact that I have a roundish face so I find that I look a bit too severe with my hair swept back.

But anyways, I do have to put my hair back or up for work, they're not too picky about how; I think even a headband is acceptable. What I normally do is a little twisty cascade thing with a claw that I sort of figured out in middle school. Problem is that it's winter and the big hair claw I use for this style doesn't exactly fit under my winter hat! So I wear my hair down on the way to work and put it up once I get there...but I'm starting to become aware of the need to keep my ends from getting snarled up in the wind/rubbing against my jacket.

So is there some kind of quickie protective updo for BSL hair that doesn't require a ton of skill and might fit under a tuque? I don't mind if I take it down and redo it when I get to work if it's not too complicated. I just really know zip about how to style hair beyond a basic ponytail and braid and I don't have a ton of hair toys just yet (metal-free elastics, big hair claw, barrette, pins and those little snappy clips).

I've never been able to fit an updo into a hat without messing it up when I take the hat off. That's why I love my calorimetry (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTcalorimetry.html). There's also the "Hannah hat" (http://pigwotknits.blogspot.com/2008/06/hannah-hat.html), which I haven't made but lots of other folks here have.

Also, check out the articles section for tons of styles (see it in the top bar?). If you're going for longer lengths you'll like knowing a few more updos. Check out the lazy wrap (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=72), that's a nice quick one.

My work hairstyle (I wear a baseball style hat as part of my uniform) has become a braid tucked up into my hat. I suck at maneuvering sticks, especially with a hat in the way, and I've found elastics to be damaging when I fasten a cinnabun with one (I shudder just recalling all the splits), and I don't own any hair friendly beak type clips (yet), and so doing it this way has been the best solution so far.

When you get to work you can take off the hat and let your braid fall as normal, or take it out and do another style. You might not even need to comb it.
