We were watching It's a Wonderful Life and I just love this hairstyle that she wore at the end. I'm sure there are probably hairpieces or ratts but I wonder if there's a way I could get close to it without those. The front looks curled and puffed then there's the braid and the back looks like a gibson. Any ideas?

I would hazard a guess at a Dutch braid across the head and then a Gibson tuck. Not sure, though.

I don't know either, I hope somebody has the answer!

I googled Vintage Hairstyling and lots of stuff popped up. Maybe try that. I don't feel like going to each site. I tried googling Donna Reed but not as much popped up. Good luck!

Donna Reed was never shown with particularly long hair (her hair style in the rest of that movie is pretty typical for her and for the period - max shoulder length), so I'd guess that they used some kind of filler/wire gizmo to roll the bottom up and around and then the braid is a hair piece pinned on.

Figure out how to curl the bangs, then pin them back just under where your braid would lay. Pin it so that the bangs poof up and forward, and retain some curl. I'd then do a gibson tuck at the back.

If you don't have short bangs, I'd curl them, and loosely braid them into your dutch braid. This way you retain the curl at the front, and sport a faux bang look, without cutting or dealing with lots of pins.

HTH!

It looks like the hair at te bottom is sort of rolled over the braid at the top... Try Torrin's Elizabethan Hair Taping (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqbAdvL8kME) as a base, and experiment from there?

it's a pretty hairstyle... kinda like Yulia Tymoshenko's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulia_Tymoshenko) so I'd say it's some sort of crown braid. I don't know much about updo's though.. I'd like to be able to even do the crown braid!

When you say crown braid do you mean a French/Dutch braided braid or a loose braid pinned around? To me it looks like a typical 40s style, the back rolled around a rat (same look is achieveable without a rat if you have long long hair) and then a plaited/braided hairpiece pinned to the top. The thickness of the braid itself is the same as mine with iii thickness, without a juicy fat roll at the back.

There are videos on Youtube of how to do 40s rolled styles; coupled with a fake braid you'll get that look. Without a fake braid you'll have to give up some of the volume elsewhere.
